  • BLOOM is a Wood Sculpture Art.
Tree shaped like a flower just starting to bloom. Each of the six branch tips goes in different directions. I represented the way they move upwards and outwards.
I had only ever carved cypress wood, so this was my first experience carving zelkova wood. From the moment I started carving, I was deeply, very deeply fascinated by the dark colors, textures, and response of the carving. However, it has a hardness that reverses these wonderful qualities. It takes twice as much time and effort to carve zelkova wood compared to cypress wood. Furthermore, the risk of cutting my finger is also doubled. However, I realized that hardness has the great advantage of being strong, and giving me peace of mind that it will not break or crack easily while I am carving. The impression that a door to a new world has been opened, which I felt at first, is still the same. I think that what I could not represent with cypress wood can be represented with zelkova wood.
