When it comes to therapeutic ways to spend your time, this woman makes it seem like cleaning old gravestones takes the cake.
Alicia Williams, 41, from Bedford County, Virginia, has been going out armed with D2 Biological Solution, soft bristle brushes and lots of water, to clean gravestones that look like they need a little tender loving care for the past three years.
She said the response when she decided to share it with the world has been mainly positive.
Alicia said: "I try to do this if I have time when the weather is nice.

@Fred Welsh well, OBVIOUSLY none of the families were around because the head stones had been severely neglected to the point that if this kind hearted woman had not cleaned them, the lichen would have eventually broken down the stone as in entropy- the inevitable degradation/progression of everything as soon as it is formed.

I agree that would be a great idea. I have seen so many older and forgotten cemeteries, in person out where I reside as well as online from other states and just so sad when the people have been forgotten. Also think as a country and each states should do their best and take a more important role in keeping socuments and records of burial sites and whom is buried where. Sadly, I have other distant cousins whom are genealogy researchers, as I am, and have found that the readon none of us have been abel to find a burial place for our 12th great grandparents, is maybe due to them NOW being buried under a modern day parking lot in Philadelphia... Still have some family trying to look into that, but would be why no one has been abel to locate documents or their burial sites in over 30 yrs...so yes, I totally agree with yout thoughts.

@@donnal.oglesby4806 I also have a set of 4th great grandparents that I believe are now under a building and how sad that is that no one thought anything about plowing them up and paving them over as if they never existed and I am sure you would agree once they are gone there is no getting them back as it's tragic to see so many neglected and abandoned cemeteries that no one will save!

Unfortunately my family graveyard has at least one grave in it that nobody remembers the owner of. The tombstone is made of wood and has become unreadable due to rot. It is likely that it has been there since or even prior to the Civil War. If preservation was more common I may have been able to learn the identity of my ancestor.

This may seem like a lie but it isn't. She is my mom. Edit: Many people are saying false things such as she's my mom or my wife it's not true. And the fact that a lot of these graves have no family to ask permission or they are far away she will just ask the staff, and she also cleans graves from our family. Another Edit: I'm seeing a lot of people saying she is doing it wrong and this is the correct way those people are probably the one who spit on them rub it around and call it clean.

She is a amateur doing more damage than good and doesn't know what she is doing. If you do not have permission from the family then keep your hands off them. NEVER EVER use metal scrapers on stone. She also is likely using cold water on a hot stone in the sun which will cause cracking. Her need to feel good doing something has nothing to do with her ability and knowledge obv. Delaminating is a huge issue as well as cracking and her removing vital micro organisms from surface can also cause damage and further it. Know what you are doing before you attempt this and get family permission. She clearly does NOT.

I love this, I visit my great grandmothers grave regularly and when I walk around and see the state of the other graves it makes me sad that they're left like that, either there's no one left to care for it, the newer generation dont even know theyre there or dont give it a second thought to even visit much less keep it nice or the family over time has moved away and they're just another name, it really bums me out that it only takes a generation or 2 to become completely obsolete and discarded...
