It feels like this codex was written to be stronger and then they went back and panic nerfed it at the last second by removing a source of +1 damage

-1 to wound was a scary stat in 9th, but now in 10th with lethal sustain on 5s it can really bypass -1 to wound rule.
"There's no flavor in this book"... exactly. We've had special terminators... i.e. Terminator Apothecaries, Terminator Ancients, even Terminator Techmarines, since at least 3rd Edition. All except for 5th Edition with the infamous Jervis Johnson codex. And that's what this feels like... it feels like the Jervis Johnson treatment all over again. No good news, only bad news, no give and take, and a book full of unnecessary nerfs for an army that was already on the bottom end of mediocre, all while almost surgically removing anything that made Dark Angels "special".
Sorry to correct you but there is no mention of Terminator Apothecaries, Terminator Ancients or Terminator Techmarines in 3rd, 4th or 5th edition. There is no mention of Terminator Techmarines at all in any Edition. Terminator Apothecaries and Terminator Ancients were introduced in 6th edition. So if you want to say we had those for three editions then you are right.
@@michaelnaber6543They weren't their own datasheet in 3rd edition, they were an armor option on the main datasheet, just like there was no "Terminator Captain" datasheet, there was a Captain (or in the Dark Angels case, a Master) datasheet that had the option of taking Terminator Armor.
Specifically, in 3rd Edition, the Master you've upgraded to be 'Master of the Deathwing' could take a Deathwing Terminator squad as his Command Squad, and any command squad regardless of type could upgrade one member to a Techmarine, one member to an Apothecary, and one member to a Standard Bearer. The same was true of the Ravenwing Bike Squad and, I didn't realize this, but the Ravenwing Land Speeder Squadron taken as the command squad for the Master of the Ravenwing as well, apparently. It's in the callout on page 7.
Also 4th Edition's rules for the Deathwing Apothecary and Standard Bearer are listed in Belial's rules in the Army Rules section. So basically we haven't had Deathwing Apothecaries or Deathwing Standard Bearers for exactly 5th and 10th edition (And probably Rogue Trader/2nd Edition... I didn't play in those editions so I have no idea).

At this point I’m convinced that 40k rules writers spend half of their budget on hard drugs 😆 how can you stat such hyper elite units so poorly… and think that removing some of the most iconic units of a faction will go over well….
If this is the trend for 40k going forward things are looking quite bleak
Historically at GW the only people on drugs were the writers who built the good editions and rules like Gav Thorpe, Andy Chambers, etc.... I'd say more drugs are required to actually put the work in. But rumor has it the new team wages they pay probably doesn't leave the rules team much thinking space/time from the stress

@@SeanHoltzman I’ve heard similar as well with regards to totally inadequate wages for such a massively profitable company… detachment rules are one thing but unit statlines are some of the hardest things to mess up this badly
It should have taken them all of 2 minutes to realize that giving detahwing knights essentially low level power weapons and companions massive can openers was a terrible ludonarrative decision… they could have all been relic blades with +1 S and it would have made more sense than what we got
@@CatharsisChaser I would be a little skeptical of the low wage thing, without decent evidence. In my experience most people think they are underpaid, and deserve more, no matter how much they are paid, and no matter what they do. Then again, with all the DEI, ESG stuff etc. I am very willing to see decision makers in large companies as power hungry, two faced, and complicit, or active, in supporting/funding, evil.
Honestly, this preview saved me $200. Sure the new models are nice, don't want to buy them if they are just going to sit on the shelf.

Appreciate you guys trying to be objective and squeeze.... something out of this release. Some detachments have legitimately interesting things, but geez.... every single unique datasheet, even the *brand new releases* just crushed with nerfs or outright duds. Incredible bummer of an army release

There are several group on Facebook that do buy, sell and trade Warhammer.

why would you sell outside of ebay? Ebay makes you the most money even after fees. But you can always get nickeled and dime on facebook lol

Besides our 9th edition codex has it ever been a good time to be a fan of the first legion? I've been a member of the unforgiven since I started in 2018 and this army was consistently one of the worst factions in all of eighth, in 9th we were propped up by attack bikes and transmit terminators. It turns out that loyalty actually is its own reward because this book ain't it

@@zyearwood4587 7th ed Ravenwing Strike Force and of course lions blade strike force. They were great fun. Back then termies were crap though.
Been playing DA since end of 4th edition, it's always been like this.
Also, Belial actually got nerfed. Yes, a DA character no one ever took once for nerfed. His roll for the mortals used to be on 2+. They changed it to the 4+

The Librarian with Terminator Armor is a Deathwing character choice with Sustained Hits, right?
Sidegrades and nerfs, with a sprinkle of stuff being removed. At least unlike a friend WS , some stuff is still legal. It is just that his 30 knights now are capped at 15, his Commander squads are no longer a thing etc but with some counts as he has a playable force . It is just that it is very bad. Then l think that someone at the studio thought this is equal to index eldar or csm, and l can't stop myself from chuckling.

A cool way to give armies without psykers, psychic powers could be "commisar leadership test" on his datasheet or "for the greater good" and than just make it a spell with perils being 1 mw to kill the guardsman who failed
I just feel bad for all the people who were excited for this. There's literally nothing in the book to be excited about; it's either bland, nerfed or a complete loss. I won't be spending a dime on any of this stuff.

As someone who plays admech and doesnt have a bunch of breachers and dark angels this is really making me feel like ill have to sit out a good bit of the rest of the edition given my playgroup has only gotten more competitive over the last year
Breachers are actually kinda bad honestly. Bad news, though; you need to run lots of chickens and pteraxii to be competitive instead! Hopefully the dataslate gives admech a bit of a sideways push to open up the army a bit more.
I have many breachers but I feel lost with admech the same :)
@@Harkaann right now as admech you can't really afford to try and do a lotta damage :( just gotta gum up the board (dragoons in hunter cohort...), play the mission (admech does fixed well) and surgically remove the targets that need to be removed.

My Astra Militarum powerfist has better weapon stats than the DWK mace of absolution. If you will all excuse me I need to start gathering signatures for my petition. A petition to get a different rules team for my beloved Astra Militarum. If we get the same people, my baneblade cannon will be D3 shots, no blast, strength 7, Ap +1, with a damage characteristic that restores d3 models to the target unit...
I think codex creep got GW a lot of bad press last edition and now they've swung hard in the opposite direction. They've kept a tight rein on the rules here, which is becoming a trend. Instead of creep, now a codex can make you long for the index days, when you had more power and more options. I would argue this could be just as bad as codex creep. This could very well affect their sales, which is all the more baffling to me as to why they've done it this way. We are talking about the Dark Angels here. The First Legion. The Lion has just returned, and this is as exciting as we're going to get? This is an unforced error, and it's a pretty big disappointment. Maybe even a disaster.
Terminator Librarians give sustained hits and are Deathwing.

I was looking forward fielding the lion all the time just like other armies field their big characters. Looks like he will be staying in cabinet for another edition.

Competitive 40k is about model access and money. You cant master math stacked against you.
For a deathwing character with sustained hits u can take the terminator librarian who gives the whole unit sustained hits
Dark Angels will end up being a ridiculous horde army like Death Guard given it’s easier to drop points than address the fact they nerfed so many rules for no good reason.

As long as that character can lead a veteran or any deathwing unit, they are deathwing. But im not sure they can get the relics tho
Oh man what a disappointment - and I just bought the command squad to make a termie brick with Strikemaster the core of my DA army. Seems like GW really nerfed Dark Angels with this release. Seems pretty shady for GW to still sell the command squad (still up for sale today!) when they are removing it from the game.
Oh yeah dude it will be up for sale for another year and than do a "remember these? Get a collectors item today" like all other legends units within another year.
May I remind you that they sold heresy units for 40k before sentencing them to legends doom.

The Codex pts are not relevant in 10th. When the codex officially releases GW does a MFM pts update for the faction.

A model with a 3+ invulnerable save and a super scary offensive profile, including ASF is considered garbage…
Thats because he is a glass cannon. Not even a glass cannon because he propably wouldnt see melee. A glass knife. Just jump a neophyte squad from deepstrike 3" away and throw some demo charges on him and he is gone. 10w doesnt get you far.
Yeah, with "monster" keyword, no protection against dev wounds and so freaky expensive. Pretty garbage.
Don't know if he has deathwing or not but the terminator librarian gives his unit sustained hits 1. Saying for the lethal crit 5 enhancement.
The enhancement is just for the model not the unit

Those datasheets are awful or bland. Detachments do seem pretty cool though (excluding the index one). I dunno seems like a real punch to the gut over all none of the new models are very good and we lost a bunch of iconic ones. Guess ill try out the new detachments at least they seem pretty alright

Why is it that every new codex in 10th looks worse than the previous ones...i mean don't get me wrong 10th core rules are AMAZING and i love the game! But it feels like except marines every new codex is a step down from the indexes!
Nids are...not great but at least they have 2 functional detatchments...but after that it's kind of a slope! Admech is a horrible codex (let's be honest...it has one strong detatchment and that detatchment requires lists costing 1500+ euros and hundreds of models).
Necrons look very bland and have one skew gimmick durability detatchment and that's basically it and now dark angels are honestly kind of a joke and i really hope the supplement is not sold full price because that bo8k is hella empty!.
The idea of gw doing a reverse-powercreep where indexes are stronger to keep them relevant while they wait for more content is great honestly but i feel gw is confusing lower strenght/powerlevel with bland and anemic content!
Codexes from 9th to 10th lost about 60-70% of the content and that's great to reduce bloat...BUT. If you streamline that much your remaining content needs to be a BANGER. everything needs to be unique functional and flavourful to justify that big of a cut! And it just...isn't!
Codexes are rolling out and they are blander and blander with more and more limited options and flavour and it's such a shame!

The space Marine Codex isn't super strong. It is midtier. If you play as Ultramarines it is better though.
The necron codex has some very good units and detachments to offer. All in all it is in my opinion stronger than the space marine codex and made Necrons one of the top tier armies.
I like the more simple rules of the new codices better than what we had in 9th. In 9th there was just to much stuff and so much of it was totally unnecessary. In my opinion it is not possible to make every detachment in every army 'bang'. That would lead to a powercreep again. Although, after all, if you have like 6 alternatives, it is often the case that some are just better overall than the others. This always happens. In my opinion there is no way to write a codex which has perfect internal and external balance.

I hope whoever wrote the unit portion of this codex gets fired. there is nothing that seems fun or good modelwise in fact everything just feels shit. Nothing feels balanced, fun or cool which I would think would be one of the goals of getting a new codex. I am no longer ordering anything for them and i know others who are doing the same.
All GW did was, get rid of a couple of elite units. "The good ones." And the ones they left, now can't fight their way out of a piss-soaked paper sack! Disappointed is an understatement.
Well, let's all agree that this codex doesn't exist and continue to play the index. Huge mistake from GW.

Easy solved! From now on, nobody buys any new dark angels box!!!! When they start loosing money, than changes will be made. They destroyed the good hammer shield terminator, oh ... coincidently they just brought out a box full of terminators. What happy coincidance. Throw away the old ones and buy the box ... It is just money, that counts ... if you DARK ANGELS PLAYERS AND LOVERS want a change, do not buy new dark angels stuff. Be brave and tough ... and do not buy!!!
I lost a tourny game because all 7 of my wardogs that were sitting on objectives failed battle shock vs tyranids. Immunity to battleshock is very good.

Since i just enjoyed the heartbreak of the AdMech Codex I feel for every DA player. This was my first ever army, i loved running Ravenwing as much as possible and thought about getting back into DA...but this review saved me a couple of hundreds. Maybe some B&B games will be fun but from a competitive point of view, this is utter garbage. Sad.

Nothing can stand out anymore. It's all gotta be sidegrades. Take away the van and stern vets and give me back my better termies and bikes.
Just going to use the Knights as th/ss terminators, etc... Lion will have to watch from the side lines but oh well.

@@emdeo There are only 3 divergant first founding Chapters, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Blood Angels.
All the other 6 are Codex compliant, no reason that they SHOULD get a codex, they should get 1 or 2 specialist units and 3-4 characters.
The Other three are NOT supposed to play like Codex chapters, they are supposed to look, feel and PLAY differently

Honestly I would want supplements to be sidegrades and not straight upgrades to the codex. This all sounds like a good thing to me. Keep power creep in line.

I think most would have been fine with things staying on par with the index, which with a 49% win rate at max, was not overpowered. Also losing quite iconic models
@TheSoijohn probably better off waiting for the next balance data slate to come through before complaining about power level, cause that win % would change with the expected nerfs to CSM, Eldar, Votaan, BTemplars and Necrons etc. At the moment power level comparisons are being done against armies expected to be nerfed
