    "Buffy Summers, class protector."
    Always brings me to tears.

    the dream wasn't about angel literally turning buffy into a vampire, but rather about the idea that them being together would metaphorically steal buffy's life from her.

    The Sunday's cover of Wild Horses is absolutely perfect. And it was perfect for that moment in this episode.

    I have never watched this episode or even a reaction to it (which has been a lot) without getting a tear in my eye. I think the Class Protector moment is possibly my favorite moment of the entire series emotion wise. I also think this is a stellar Giles episode. Thanks for your continued reactions to this and a few other shows.

      Agreed, the fact everyone thought the kids in Sunnydale were oblivious to the supernatural happenings around them. But the whole time they not only knew about it but also who was really protecting them from it.

    Poor Buffy. She never gets to have nice things. That conversation with Angel in the sewers was so painful.

    Said this before, Sarah Michelle Gellar(SMG) is one of the best if not the best actress I have ever seen when it comes to emotional scenes.
    I have watched tens, perhaps hundred of thousands of episodes of various tv shows and thousand of movies, but no one have made me "connect" to her on emotional level like SMG....
    "attacking you with her skills" is a pretty good way of saying it lol

    Getting emotional is fine, it's called reacting and it comes with the territory for a reactor. I'm over 60 and still tear up when I see Buffy crying and the scene with the class protector award. It's (mostly) a well-written show and very well acted. Sarah Michelle Geller already had a Daytime Emmy award before even starting on "Buffy".

    Yep. Class Protector. Tears here. Always. And remember when Buffy missed picture day for the yearbook and told Cordelia that all she wanted was to have some kind of moment to look back to years later and say she was there and had a life other than being a Slayer? Well now she had her moment. On top of that, it also let us know that the entire class has been noticing Buffy for years. That thanks to her they're safer. I just loved it all. Buffy finally got recognized for her hard work 🥲 ♥.

    In Doppelgangland (the episode with Vampire Willow coming to the reality we know), Anya responded to the barman that she was 1120 years old when he asked for ID. No reason for us, the audience, to believe it wasn't the truth.

    8:17 Yep, that's exactly how. Buffy Season 4 onward and Angel should be watched in parallel - there are a few good guides out there which can tell you the order in which the episodes should be watched.

    Some very funny comedy moments in this episode especially when Xander says to Anya when the says she hasn't got a date for Prom and he says ' it must be your sales pitch ' Xander shows he still cares for Cordelia by paying for her dress. The interaction with Joyce and Angel is very interesting and Angel knows deep down she's right. Overall the story of the episode is pretty weak, only saved by Buffy's award at The Prom at the end, the schmaltzy tone works so well. The last two episodes season finale are such a step up from this you will love them, parts 1 and 2 of finale are brilliant!

  • @jzchillin

    Great reaction to a great ep that provides a beat before the march to the finale, but also addresses the foreshadowed issues with the Buffy/Angel relationship, while setting the stage for the impending reasons why Angel departs to his own show... but this small ep was big with the emotional feels and damage, from the breakup, the little moment of understanding between Cordy/Xander, and of course the prom and the "class protector" award presentation.... and we all felt it.... a "lump in the throat" CTU for you today, D.... keep em coming!

    Hated Angel for this. I get it. But like screw you bro. Killed any type of hope for love after this. But I get he wanted her to have a man she could be more intimate with. But like Buffy just ends up dating a vampire anyway by the end 🙄 and the way Angel just moves onto Cordelia on his spinoff. Like I like how he still visited Buffy every now on then, but it pissed me off. It was like he forgot about her. Like she was just an ex (which is normal irl…but hit for Buffy and Angel). Buffy was like his twin flame. Bro stalked her (when she was 14/15 lmao), couldn’t live without her. He took her virginity away?. He would’ve died for her. Then, she was like nothing to him. Idk. It pissed me off. Oh and what the hell was with these older men getting with high school students anyway. Angel was one thing, even though a 25 year old (his human age) dating a 15-18 year old is still weird and illegal. I get it was the 90s but like…and Buffy’s crack “lots of girls bring older dates”… yeah, glad we’re a little more aware in 2023 lol….but like Wes and Cordy is just flat out weird

    At this point, Anya is a human. She was a demon, yes, and she's much older than Angel.
    One of the few complaints I have about the writing on BtVS and Angel is that they rarely write old characters acting their ages. Angel never really acts like someone who's over 200 years old. Anya certainly doesn't act her age either.

    • @jackmars931
      @jackmars931 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      How does a person those ages act? I mean what do you compare them against? They may be old, but they've never gone through the life stages that cause people to mature: Holding a full time job, getting married, having kids, taking care of a family, suffering the ravages of age on the body. It isn't the simple passage of time that makes people act in certain ways, but the experiences and life stages that happen along the way that change us.

    • @Henrik_Holst
      @Henrik_Holst ปีที่แล้ว

      Well in most vampire (and other immortals) lore they usually stay mentally at the age they where when they where turned.

    • @Tantalus010
      @Tantalus010 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jackmars931 Are you suggesting that despite living 200 years, Angel has no experience? Because we know that isn't the case, and that's what I'm talking about. Angel should be the answers guy. He shouldn't have all of them, of course, but he should have a lot of them. He should also be a lot better at socializing, he should be incredibly difficult to trick or fool, should know when it's prudent to be cautious and when it's okay to rush in, he should know when it's best not to get involved, he should speak multiple languages and know the customs of multiple regions (and species), and should be somewhat wealthy. It doesn't take a genius to realize, "oh hey, I'm going to live forever; it might not be a bad idea to put some money in a bank account somewhere for my 'great-grandson' and let interest do the rest."
      Now that I think about it, ever watch _Highlander: the Series?_ Angel ought to behave similarly to Duncan MacCleod. Not the same, of course, but similar.

    • @jackmars931
      @jackmars931 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Tantalus010 Angel's experience consists of being a murderous demon for 100 years, then being a hobo for another 100, except for that little break where he got mad and let a demon kill a hotel full of people. He was literally living in an alley eating rats right before meeting Buffy. Angel's only actual long term, non-psychotic relationship in his life has been with Buffy. Angel should be nothing like a highlander because he's not had anything even remotely resembling a normal life.
      Also, if either Angel or Anya were written as you describe: knowledgeable, worldly, mature adults, it would be grossly inappropriate for them to be involved in romantic relationships with teenagers. Imagine Duncan or Amanda having sex with a teenager...it would be beyond disgusting, because they're clearly all the things described above. And that's (aside from Anya's first two appearances) Angel and Anya's whole reason for existing on the show: to be romantic partners for high school students. They aren't written as being closer to teenagers than adults because the writers don't know what they're doing, they're written that way so that people don't feel like they're watching Buffy: SVU.

    SPOILER FOR THE FIRST EPISODE OF _ANGEL_
    To be fair Willow and Dakara, Angel didn't want to have the breakup conversation until after prom, but Buffy pushed for it to happen in that exact moment.
    Buffy is in such denial over how her relationship with Angel has always worked that she'll throw The Mayor's truthful words under the bus because he's a bad guy. It only adds to how much of a "swoony little schoolgirl" she actually is, despite trying to deny that, also. Her entire relationship with Angel consisted of her being underage and in high school, her and Willow gossiping about it, having underage sex and ignoring the things that adults (The Mayor and her mother specifically, but even Giles, Willow and Xander to some degree) always brought up that were going to be roadblocks to the relationship.
    A lot of fans and Cordelia forgive Xander. My nigging thought is why did he initially go in the store to begin with? It clearly wasn't to buy anything. He was looking to be rude to her. U until the store manager and Cordelia made him realize some truths. I think he shows the growth, but I think it's a little sad that it happens only because he learned of her situation. And considering only half a year has passed since he got caught cheating, his rudeness doesn't come off as defensiveness like it does with Cordelia. It comes off like Cordelia acted in S1. This paragraph is how you see Willow's growth over the past six months vs Xander's. I've always wondered what their relationship would have been like if Cordelia stayed on the show after their patching up of things.
    "Are we all catching up now" is one of my favorite Cordelia lines.
    A lot of people roll their eyes at the fact that Tucker was turned down, but I look at why he was turned down. In high school where you live is just as much a key factor for bullying as being a geek or nerd and he has that working against him also. It definitely doesn't gives him the excuse of sending Hell Hounds to the Prom, but it gives more insight into Tucker's character just through visuals. As a loser of some kind Tucker's breaking point was whatever teasing came after being turned down. It was too much on top of whatever teasing came before.
    As a Stephen King fan, I kept waiting for Buffy's award to be a horrible prank the school at large had for her - _Carrie-_style. Paint, instead of pigs blood, though.
