    Hi all. Dakara will be watching Angel - she's got a watch order provided by her discord/patreon peeps. So she is planning on releasing it in the same order as on patreon. There shouldn't be more than 2 eps in a row of each series.

    You know, this was interesting. I feel that with Xander gone, Buffy became Xander.
    The part that made me look at it from that perspective was when she's walking on campus with her arm hurt and sees Willow and Oz from a distance but doesn't approach them. They looked like they were fitting in college quite nicely. Whereas Buffy seemed to be looking in from the outside at them. And then she's turning to Giles and going home but is turned away. And I thought, this must be how Xander has felt throughout the entire time being with his friends at times. He's always trying to fit in and feeling like he's not special until he realizes he's fine and just needs reassurance from time to time. And I thought it made sense that it was him who ends up being the one to give Buffy words of encouragement at a time when she's feeling low. He understood her.
    And I love when he speaks from the heart. He's always there for his friends when they're feeling low. He brings that spark back into them. I think it's beautiful when someone does that for another just to see them smile again.

    College is all about school because you choose it, meeting new people, opening up to new experiences, and being confident while doing all this adapting. Buffy was tutored through high school because she hated it, mostly had new people turn out to be bad guys, new experiences = gutwrenching negative emotions, and adapting by fighting her way through. No wonder she's having problems!

  • @RabidTribble
    @RabidTribble ปีที่แล้ว +7

    College is partially about moving out of the comfort zone of parents controlling your life, and learning how to take responsibility in the real world. It can be a terrifying experience at first, especially if a child has been shielded too much. I think this episode really captured that terror for Buffy. She'll adapt and overcome...it's what the slayer does.

    Again one thing you do notice with BTVS as the Seasons progress is how much slicker the show looks with increased budget and special effects. S3 was damn near perfect, and the loss of The High School Years is hard to accept. However, we all have to grow up and it's an interesting progression for Buffy into adulthood with the pressures that brings. It wasn't a bad opener some great little comedy moments as well. The flying spinning stake at the end when Sunday gets dusted is one of the most iconic shots of the whole series. The phone call needs to be kept in mind where Buffy answers and there seems to be nobody on line. Buffy seems to find it hard to accept that Joyce is using her room as a store room, and that Giles has a private life too. Funny ageist reaction from Buffy to Giles here, and also the potential for Buffy and Kathy to drive themselves nuts having to share and get used to each others ways. The show here tries to show that break from adolescent to adult that everyone has to go through. Look forward to your reaction to City Of... should you decide to do Angel, you really should it's a brilliant show with some stunning episodes.

    Buffys line to Riley, "I'm nice to meet, ..everyones got a brain" kind of reminds me of Xanders line in s1e1 when meeting Buffy, "can I have you. can I help you .. Xander, that is me". Same energy not the words themselves. Maybe Buffy could relate especially well to Xander because of this.

  • @Tantalus010
    @Tantalus010 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Giles did the right thing. Buffy has a tendency to rely on Giles too much because he's her father figure. He recognized that she just lacked self-confidence, and that's not something he can give her. She has to develop that herself. Then he caved, because Buffy's his daughter figure.
    Also, as a college teacher, yes, that instructor was overboard, even for back in that day. It _is_ rude (and distracting) to talk while the teacher is trying to do their job regardless of the reason, but even still, his reaction was unwarranted.

    Professor Walsh is played by Oscar nominee Lindsay Crouse ("The Insider", "Prince Of The City"), the mother of actor Zosia Mamet ("Girls", "The Flight Attendant") and the ex-wife of playwright David Mamet ("American Buffalo", "Glengarry Glen Ross"). She's great here.

    I think Xander did a little maturing at the Fabulous Ladies Nightclub. 😆 Seriously though, what began in The Prom with paying off Cordy's dress without expectation or ulterior motive shows itself again in his unwavering support of Buffy. Yes, he made a crack about 'what is Buffy wearing' but I believe that was to make her smile and doesn't negate the heart melting declaration of 'You're my hero'.

      I always thought he started changing quite a bit after The Zeppo! To quote The Evalution Zone - And Xander _does_ learn. In the fantastic Season Three episode, “The Zeppo,” we get to see the world through Xander’s eyes, the eyes of the one decidedly “ordinary” member of the Buffyverse crew. While Buffy, Willow, Giles, and Angel all face off against an earth-shattering crisis, Xander goes on a personal journey of self-discovery in his uncle’s souped-up car. Throughout this odyssey, he is emasculated in every sense, having his life threatened by a cluster of zombies and his virginity taken away by an uncaring Faith. As much as high school Xander aspires to be a macho man, his aspirations are all but destroyed by the episode’s finale. He’ll _never_ be the kind of hero his friends are. What he can do, however, is put his life on the line for them and be the one willing to make the personal sacrifice others will not: he’s everything good about impulsiveness. Plus, by the episode’s conclusion, he inadvertently saves his friends from being killed by the zombie goons’ scheme to blow up the school using a homemade bomb.
      Looking at adult Xander as compared to high school Xander, the difference is truly jarring.

    • @visarr
      @visarr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PurpleNurpleSPN That's interesting and something I didn't know. I did a little research and Joss maintains that it should be watched in 4:3 because that's how it was framed, but the BBC (and FOX as they knew what was coming) demanded it be filmed in 16:9 (and subsequently cropped in the US). So, it was shot with the extra on the sides, but Joss didn't take that into consideration when he framed a scene. I suppose it doesn't suffer from the bad coloring on the recent 16:9 version. I also wonder whether it suffers from seeing cameramen and actors just off camera in the 4:3 version who are supposed to jump into a scene. Finally, which version is Dakara watching? The original 16:9 shown in the UK or the later (bad version) 16:9? I agree it's confusing!

    This season is my least favorite, but it's still got some insanely good episodes! S5 is my favorite, so it's definitely not a case of the show going downhill. It's just a really rough transition season between highschool and the rest. 1-3 is like a complete thing. 5-7 are a complete thing. 4 is just a little awkward, and casting issues derailed plot things.
    But even if the season arc is meh, every episode has great character moments to enjoy!

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was just a fan theory. One I don't particularly like, because Buffy is able to beat Sunday fairly easily once she's able to focus on the fight, with an injured arm and all her weapons stolen. This strongly suggests that Sunday is not unusually tough for a vampire, Buffy was just off her game in their first fight.
      I like Sunday. Her actress has a real way with sarcasm and she's given some great lines. But I think the episode works better if she's just a regular vampire.
