    I’m physically disabled, in a similar situation as Briarlight (I was born with it instead). Her experience, especially with Millie, Greystripe, and Blossomfall, is painfully actuate to my own experiences. Your parents being overbearing or distancing themselves, siblings feeling a painfully jealousy. Not to mention the constant feeling of uselessness that hangs over you. I used to reread Briar’s paragraphs over and over as a kid, since I never knew anyone else who went through what I did. Watching this video, all those memories begin flooding back to me. Thank you.

      I relate to Briarlight's story the same way, I felt bad that I did and worried I was in the wrong for not criticizing Warrior cats, since everyone just loves to argue about Briarlight and how "bad" per parents treated her. I'm glad I'm not alone !

      I'm not in the exact situation but something akin, and yeah. My parents are fine but I feel her clanmates and leader are akin to friends and teachers, and the way they treat/talk about her...it's painful, and it's real.

Please don't let the 'Millies' and 'Blossomfalls' get to you. You are so useful even just the joy you bring to your friends by being alive and you can accomplish so much if you put your mind and heart to it. You are loved and valid.

    I really think Mothflight needs to be talked about. The fact she's basically a teen mom with ADHD and she's set up to fail by the story. Her parents don't support her that much (especially her mom) and she's widowed so soon into her relationship and so young. It's interesting that she was the founder of her role. I really hate how she was turned into just the "creator of the medicine cats having babies" rule and nothing else.

      The series has a habit of turning even nice characters judgemental and mean after they join StarClan. Like what was up with Littlecloud in Squirrelflight's Hope.

      I feel like she gets too much hate. She had very little support to take care of her kits and essentially was pressured to give them up under the premise she couldn’t be a good mother to them. The fandom gets really mad at her even though I feel as though she acts the way she does due to trauma from losing her mate and having to give up her kits so young. It isn’t an excuse for creating the code, but I still feel bad for her. She was super relatable to me when I read the books because of her ADHD.

      i really hate how everyone in that book kept telling her stuff like “oh windrunner/star is just overprotective of you… shes your mom…” bc windstar was awful to mothflight and gorsefur did not care about mothflight enough to notice.

    • @anthares96
      @anthares96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      what i hate is that moth flight and the other og medicine cats never got given the chance to discover anything on their own. she found the moonstone, sure, but afterwards, starclan word for word told her the clans would have medicine cats, which cat it would be in each clan, when and how to relay any message, and any other major plot point in the book. her relationship with micah and struggle to raise her kits were interesting, but for most of the book she was just starclan's mouthpiece with very little agency.

    • @SketchUT
      @SketchUT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      I don’t like how she’s portrayed outside of her book despite her being a favorite of mine (ADHD gang). She’s treated by the writers and the fandom as the mean cat who stood in Leafpool’s way to StarClan (iirc) when she was just doing what she was pressured to believe is right. And because she was raised under this mentality, which absolutely extended through the rest of her off screen life that seems to be forgotten about by the fandom, she holds it true and central to her decision. She was pushed to think that medicine cats shouldn’t have a mate or kits because everyone told her that, and as they founder of the role she didn’t know what affect that would have for future meddies.
      Not gonna rant any more but Moth Flight beloved, she deserves better treatment especially as the only ND rep we have from what I can recall

    I think the reason Blossomfall blames the (technically other) victim (Briarlight) and not the abuser (Millie) is because.. That's actually something that happens in real families. The one getting most of the attention can be unfairly seen as the cause of the problems. Blossomfall just thinks that if Briarlight weren't disabled, then Millie would pay more attention to both of them instead of just one of them. It's also similar to how older siblings get jealous of all the attention the younger sibling gets. A sort of "why them and not me?" mindset, because siblings are, in nature, competition for one another and can have a lot of conflict when one feels like they're being neglected. Not all situations like this end up with the resentful, jealous sibling realizing the parents are also to blame for the neglect. Shifting blame is a thing that hurt and neglected kids 1000% do. They might be jealous of a sibling, or even a classmate who seems to be better off. All simply because they are jealous of what they can't/don't have and angrily hold grudges against anyone who makes them jealous in this way.
    (Also not excusing Blossomfall's behavior in any way. Just giving my two cents on _why_ she acts that way.)

    disabled person here! not paralyzed, but my disability heavily affects my legs to the point they are near-useless. i think briarlight is my favorite character in the series simply because of how well she's portrayed, especially as a newly disabled child who used to be abled and very active. my disability progressed in very much the same way it felt like. i could run and keep up with my friends and do what i wanted, and suddenly i couldn't.
    having the people around you fret and lose sleep over you is also very much a disabled experience. nobody listens to you when you tell them you don't feel pain, and they insist you're suffering. it deeply affects your sense of self and even your perception of your disability. like, "am i really suffering and just don't know it?" it really hits home for me. especially with how briar doesn't want anyone to worry about her. she's so used to people going into panicked episodes over her health that she would rather let an illness progress to terminality before ever asking for help because she doesn't want to cause more worry over her, because that's basically been her whole life.
    all in all briar is 10/10 amazing character and surprisingly good representation for warriors. for next cat maybe uhmmm shadowsight? he was my favorite cat in TBC :)

    Yeahhhh I will say as someone who is physically disabled (not paralyzed, but still disabled), it kinda irked me when the fandom decided all of a sudden that the way to fix the books ableism was to... make all of the disabled characters into warriors. Characters like Cinderpelt and Briarlight were the ones that mainly got me, cuz I know they WANTED to be warriors, but a reality of being disabled is that you don't always get to do what you want to. I felt very fond of these characters who found other ways to make their own lives brighter in ways that were different.
    Tbh, making all the disabled characters into warriors despite it all kinda just loops right back into ableism again; implying that they'll only feel fulfilled or not be discriminated against if they fit into the society's "normal" structure. Just... irks me.

    • @sillygoosetaur
      @sillygoosetaur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      there was a reason jayfeather was one of my favorites.... i'm not blind but was born with my disability and it stops me from being able to do things i want that everyone else does and as a kid i didn't get to try. but he gets to be salty about it! he has never been the picture-perfect disabled character. he's sarcastic and tired and while he's annoyed with how his disability limits him, he doesn't hate himself and make us pity him. he's a character on his own and like most characters in this series does have morally questionable actions and it's never blamed on him being disabled (disclaimer all of this is what i remember from years ago + i'm very not caught up with anything post bramblestar's storm).

      I don't think that all the disabled cat's should *have* to be medicine cats, I think they should have a choice- y'know?
      Depending on the disability, they can still do warrior duties (Cinderpelt very well could've done patrols and such) just fine, so it doesn't make sense as to why they should give up their dreams or current roles because they're disabled.

    • @torra9979
      @torra9979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      @@ProjectSebastiannthat is fair, but then I think it’s only so set up for failure as well specifically cause there’s only really two choices. Sometimes you can’t really choose between either choice cause it doesn’t fit you. I think that’s why warriors can sometimes end up with some...really messed narratives. Mainly just the fact there isn’t much of a branching out between warriors and medicine cats (if that makes sense).
      also, I wouldn’t say characters like cinderpelt actually would’ve been able to do that is the problem. disabilities can be a lot more...well. Disabling than most people would expect. hell, just having coordination that’s off can throw you off your feet. it would *definitely* be hard to even manage to get up with a completely mangled leg.

    As someone who's physically disabled (in not as severe of a way though) i'm glad you said something about it not being a good idea for her to race around and fight like a warrior.
    It's absolutely true that she is in danger if she does what everyone else does. It is not ableist to acknowledge that. It is not ableist to prevent her from doing things that are harmful to only her. Her disability is a part of herself, you can't say she's "just like everyone else" because she's technically not. Her disability effects her, it makes her different. Whats important is to establish different isn't bad, not that differences don't exist.
    Us disabled people do need different treatment, what is important is that its not treated as a burden.

    The points you make about graystripe are... really salient, actually. It's bizarre to me that he has so little interaction with his kids with Millie, whereas for his last litter with Silverstream it was seen as incredibly UNUSUAL how involved in his childrens' lives he was. Where did his parental instinct go? Did... did they just forget that he's supposed to be a good dad?

      I know that it's mainly because the world wasn't fully built back in Forest of Secrets, but it's implied Graystripe is only as involved with Featherkit and Stormkit was because they didn't have their mother. He also left ThunderClan to be with them and he didn't really have any friends in RiverClan aside from their foster mother. So it makes sense for him to be close with them.
      So when his litter with Millie is born, it can be perceived as him not being involved because, "that's mom's job" as was stated in Forest of Secrets, or that he didn't feel like they were his only relationships in the clan, so he was free to be distant.

    hey! i'm physically disabled and i think you covered briarlight wonderfully. you were thorough, thoughtful and called out things that needed to be. you reminded me of stuff i forgot that are important for me to know around my opinion of briarlight.
    i love briarlight, and honestly i think 70% of the plot threads around her and characters in her life are unfortunately very realistic. millie's appalling behaviour and blossomfall's jealousy are common in families of severely disabled children (minus millie's overt comment about letting briar die). parents panicking and fretting to a harmful extent is something i've witnessed myself. and if we read greystripe maliciously (which most likely wasn't intended), deadbeat dads are very common for disabled kids.
    briar being babied by her clanmates is something i relate to strongly, and briar's struggle with self-worth hits home so much that on a bad day this discussion could trigger me (i'm good atm, don't worry). the books showing obvious causes for briar feeling this way, and the arguments jayfeather makes against those beliefs is truly comforting to read in a kid's book.
    there is a lot done wrong in the books, of course. comments from clanmates about her being less whole, or that her life is something to fear resembling are problematic. her death is baffling and seems like just a cheap way to put an emotional punch into the book. her being able-bodied in starclan is total bullshit! so, like i said, 70% good but far from perfect. overall could have been done better, but could have been much worse as well.

    • @goldenfloof5469
      @goldenfloof5469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Her being able-bodied in star clan is following the precedent they set when they introduced Jayfeather. Nobody will argue that blindness isn't a disability, and since he was born blind his happiest moments were definitely when he was blind. But, despite being born blind, he can still see while dreaming, and more importantly in this case he can see perfectly fine while he's in starclan. So your physical disabilities not carrying over into your afterlife just *is* how things are in warriors, and if that wasn't the case for Briarlight then it would've been a massive plothole. Now whether you think the way it works is bullcrap or not, I don't care, not my place to judge. But saying Briarlights case is bullcrap while disregarding Jayfeathers situation just doesn't make sense.

      @@goldenfloof5469 the books are extremely inconsistent about starclan lore. nothing is set in stone, because the lore changes whenever the authors feel like it. so, the authors can do whatever they want (they already do, in fact! that's why lore is a jumbled mess). i'm going to judge them for this decision, because the inconsistency of the lore makes it easy for them to keep briarlight disabled after death, and they chose not to do that. human people made those decisions, in a book series notorious for NOT having a lore bible. i'm personally not gonna accept the "ah! but the lore dictates this!" as an excuse for the authors ableist undertones. that's my opinion, anyway.

    I feel like something to keep in mind about Blossomfall is that even though she’s a late teen/young adult when Briarlight is injured, I think the purpose of her character might have been to empathize with younger readers who have sick or disabled siblings. My younger sister was diagnosed with a rare chronic illness when I was 6, and yeah I was a lot younger than Blossomfall, but when I read her confession I actually felt seen. Because yeah, I obviously don’t have it nearly as rough as my sister, and the two of us have always been incredibly close, but I remember being a kid and feeling jealous of all the attention that my parents gave her and feeling like they forgot all about me. Now, I was 6 and Blossomfall is 18+, so obviously there are different circumstances there. I won’t deny that Blossomfall’s arc in OotS was clumsily written at best, but siblings of disabled/sick children are very rarely represented, so I appreciated that warrior cats at least made an attempt

    ok get this: what if briarlight still can't use her back legs in starclan, but that's because she literally just has no reason to? Starclan has no earthly problems like thorns, and you can't get infections in starclan. She can interact with all her loved ones, spy on all the gatherings she wants, do all the activities like play with kits/help others with medicine cat tasks like she did while alive, and if she really wants to hunt because it might be fun, well, prey is easy to catch in starclan, and she can experiment with all different hunting types from all clans. Her not being able to use her back legs in starclan shouldn't affect how happy she is there. (although of course her wanting to have use of her backlegs is her choice in starclan, the experience of running on all fours isn't unparalelled, and I just don't like how if your form in starclan is how you were happiest in implies that she was never as happy as she was again as an apprentice.)

    I can't speak on the disability aspect of their relationship, but Blossomfall and Briarlight are definitely a surprisingly realistic representation of how parental abuse or neglect can affect siblings. Blossomfall very much reads as an adult whose ability to empathize with others was damaged by her parents ignoring her. She doesn't see the KIND of attention her sister gets, only that it's attention. She doesn't blame her mother, because it's really hard to recognize and deal with knowing that your parents are failing you.
    We all want to be loved by our parents, and if you don't know what love looks like, the negative attention Briarlight was getting from Millie probably looks like it.
    Doesn't excuse Blossomfall's flaws, just makes them more real, which I can appreciate. I think it also implies Millie is an even WORSE mother than the writers probably intended.

    As a physically disabled person, ambulatory wheelchair, I like how you covered this. It was sad to see she was seen as a character to pity. People with disabilities have the right to live and their lives aren’t anything to pity. In reality, there is an issue of disabled people being seen as worthless. When disabled people are killed by their “caregivers”, society doesn’t care much. I really didn’t like how she was just able to walk again in Starclan. Mainly because people act like death is better than being disabled, or that death is freeing.

    I feel that Millie was just a shit mother. The way Blossomfall acts is how someone with a neglectful if not abusive parent acts and it isn't much better with Briarlight or Bumblestripe. It sounds to me like Millie saw 'a good life' as fighting and having kits, never reassuring Briarlight that she is worth more than that and can live life her own way. Also, the way all three act is as if they were being guilt tripped and held hostage (Bumblestripe seeing that behavior as normal and trying to do that to Dovewing, Briarlight, the cat who lets no one get her down, immediately blames herself for her mother's overreaction, and Blossomfall, who bottles her own emotions because she is scared to have them) and for me, the doubt they all have that them just being happy is enough for Millie is a pretty big red flag. It's kinda telling when 2/3 end up fucked up and the third beats herself up constantly for being disabled. Just my take, I'm probably over analyzing.
    To everyone seeing this, you matter. You don't have to stand for abusive family and no matter what, you are enough.
    Millie = Karen

    To answer your question, because kids don't like to accept the fact their parent might not love them, or that their parents are in the wrong. It's easier to blame external factors for relationships not working instead of just accepting there's something wrong with the other person, or even yourself in some cases.
    She's in denial to put it simply.
    Why this wasn't followed up on and reached the conclusion it should have, Blossomfall accepting her mother is the problem, and fixing her relationship with Briarlight is why most conflicts in Warriors don't get resolved well. The Erins are great at set up, but suck at payoff.

Thunderstar was his adopted brother and I feel like those two are some of the only cats in the Warriors series who aren’t blood related, but still feel like brothers. I think the fact that both Jayfeather, another disabled character, and Briarlight were able to form such a close bond showed great solidarity between the two. Probably influenced how great Jayfeather was in helping her see her self-worth as something other than usefulness. Though I agree Blossomfall is obviously in the wrong with her blaming Briarlight, the whole jealousy over siblings' things is extremely common as parents tend to neglect the other kids. As someone whose sister had a disability that required frequent checkups as a kid, I was always really jealous of the attention my mom spent with her so I could understand Blossomfall feel a similar way. Even if it isn't rational, she probably would rather Milie give her attention even if it's doting and overbearing because she resents not having that.

Of course there are the canon examples Longtail and Honeyfern, but she was on the same patrol with Runningwind (her brother) when he died, and although it's a bit of my head-canon ish, Redtail, since she ran away from the battle he died in (worse is the fact that he was deputy). Also kind of briarlight, because she ran in to save Longtail, who wouldn't have even gone back into camp if Mousefur hadn't complained. She dies as soon as she meets up with Longtail again in the battle with the dark forest, by an unnamed dark forest warrior (which kind of sucks since she was an original arc 1 warrior, she deserved at least a named killer). She was also a part of (in my opinion) the best group of elders with Longtail and Purdy.

    disabled person here! along with all the things already brought up here (which i wholeheartedly agree with) , a thing that really gets under my skin is the words the narration uses to describe her, not the characters but basic descriptions of things
    she never is allowed to "come" over, to "rush" to "wander" even just to "get" anywhere, she is only ever allowed to "drag herself" or "haul herself". that scene where she jokes about leafpool getting slower, the book describes her movement as "hauling her useless hind legs behind her" which. while yeah, sure, she does have to pull her legs along without the use of her leg muscles, but the language goes out of its way, all the time, to imply that she is suffering. even when doing things that she doesnt have any trouble with. and it just. it all adds up into feeling like the narration wants you to believe that her mobility is a huge horrible terrible upsetting loss, something to feel sorry for
    they also do a similar thing to her as they do with jayfeather, where they describe her doing normal everyday things for her "despite" her back legs. (they sure love to say "her useless hind legs" a lot). it simultaneously is suggesting that shes oh so wonderful and inspirational for ~overcoming her challenges~ while also reinforcing that she is missing something. they even say so so many times that she is one of the most cheerful in the clan *despite* her paralysed hind legs. and it just. sucks. she was one of the happiest members of the clan before that!

And I’m saying this as someone who’s not physically disabled but is mentally disabled and has an abled sister who gets easily jealous and angry at me because my mom gives me “special treatment” because of my disability

    She was an abuse victim of Slash and was eventually taken in by Tall Shadow’s group via encouragement from Gray Wing a little while after she met him. She gets close to Wind Runner over time then joins her group when Wind Runner splits off from Tall Shadow’s. Even after leaving Slash’s group she still cared about her friends there. She thought one of them; Bee, was finally coming around only to be pressed to return and attacked when she refused.

    I’m really glad they showed the harm Millie’s reaction did. Because it’s a very common response for parents of disabled children. There’s being sad about the hardship your child has to face, and then there’s implying your child would be better off dead than disabled. It’s sad that Millie’s character goes this way, but I think it shows even more how Jayfeather helps Briarlight and how she overcomes her mother’s words and finds happiness.

    I am not a physically disabled person (yet suspect neurodivergency) but I think Briarlight's trauma with her ableist mother is great represented. I relate to how parents deny the disability and victimize, and even ignore their child and I know how painful that is and how it affects you later on, the useless feeling and the eventual need to h@rm yourself thinking that you deserve it.

  • @Laze_n_Daze
    @Laze_n_Daze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Briarlight's experiences are so accurate to my own. Some people becoming overbearingly "helpful", some people distancing themselves because you or what happened to you makes them uncomfortable, even Blossomfall's painful jealousy. I definitely read that as her feeling incredibly guilty and not blaming Briar at all. And of course she wouldn't talk to anyone about it, she feels like it makes her unforgivable, she certainly never forgives herself for those feelings. I think the reactions are all very well written, very real reactions, ablism included.
    Briarlight constantly minimising herself and her needs is also frighteningly accurate, especially the "I'm not useful, so I don't deserve to eat." mentality. 😅
    I adore Briarlight for so many reasons. Longtail was one of my favourite characters and his death was so hard for me and when Briarlight died I was a mess. Completely and utterly devastated.

    I actually have to disagree on blossomfall. In Germany, we would call her a "shadowchild" - Someone who feels left on the side by their parents because of the terminal illness of a sibling. That often leads to misplaced grudge towards that sibling + guild for feeling that way. The way I read it, it never seemed like she wanted the same treatment from Millie towards briarlight, but just that she wanted A relationship with her mother AT ALL. I mean, come on - she comes home with a bloody head and Millie doesn't even care. That's why the argument "but she had so many other people around her!" doesn't work for me - they are not her mother. I'm an adult too, but if my mother would stop caring about me at all I would be hurt too, no matter how many good friends I have.
    I'm not saying blossomfall is perfect. The obvious solution to her problem would have been to just TALK to both briarlight and Millie. But this is warrior cats and none talks to anyone, specially when you are a sidecharacter, so the authors never resolved it.

      Are you saying that as an adult, you would blame your disabled sibling if your mother stopped caring for you? Because that's what Blossomfall did. I didn't say she shouldn't be upset. I'm saying she shouldn't be upset with her sister over her mother.

    • @evahagen9131
      @evahagen9131 2 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      @@Moonkitti No, of course not and that's not what I said. I said having a mother that doesn't care about you is upsetting for anyone at any age. Blossomfall acknowledged that none of this is briarlights fold. She seems to feel genuine sorry for her sister's condition. But she also feels bitterness that her mother stopped caring for her, and that started with briarlights injury. While she says she is angry with briarlight, she also says she is sorry that she has to go through all that, and she acknowledged that she should not feel that way towards her sister - she also NEVER lets her emotion out on her, as far as we know briarlight never even knew she felt that way. The person she seems to actually be mad at is her mother. It honestly reads like blossomfall is more angry at briarlight INJURY and Millies treatment towards herself than her actual sister as a person. And again, these are emotions that a lot of people with disabled family members feel. These people are not horrible people for simply having those emotions, as long as they don't let them out on the disabled family member, which again, SHE DOESN'T DO. Nobody HAS to like Blossomfall, I agree with you that she is a classic mean girl. But I do feel empathy for her situation, and I think her emotions are more complicated than "Well she just mean!".

    As a disabled person myself, I can say her struggles are surprisingly realistic. I'm not paralyzed but I suffer from chronic migraines, which is debilitating enough for me to be at home a lot so I can rest immediately and take medication if an episode occurs. Millie's complaints about her daughter being disabled and acting like her life is over is similar to what my mother did once. In both Warriors and in real life, it feels like a lot of the time people only care about a person's ability to make money and socialize. Because of that, it really does feel hard to accept oneself because we are indeed treated as "being broken." I'm honestly fine with my life and I can work around my disability but there are always Millies out there who will not be able to accept that you can have a disability and be content. It's honestly tiring and Briarlight's struggles are something I relate well to. I eventually learned that my personality is where my worth lies and that it's fine to try just living as comfortably as I can and be content with it regardless of whether or not people think is "normal."
    Also, my suggestion: I think Heathertail would be a neat cat to talk about. Her character is interesting and I'm actually shocked she hasn't had her own novella yet, considering the importance she has in the lives of Lionblaze and Breezepelt.

    Haven't finished the video yet, might watch it in multiple take. But I wanted to pause because I now imagine Tigerstar and Hawkfrast surrounded by butterflies in the dark forest.
    Also, as someone with a disability, the scene where Briarlight want to be useful and Jayfeather says she doesn't need to be is really something, at least to me. It's like Briarlight is voicing the worries I sometimes have. Cause even knowing that it's just a stupid concept, sometimes, it's hard not to think about it, especially when everyone around you is working AND taking care of you and you feel so powerless and guilty. Idk if it was the intention of the authors, but it made Brialight felt real and close to me.

    As a kid, my older brother was diagnosed with ADHD. Immediately he was getting so much more attention from my parents. I didn’t feel like it was fair.
    I had naturally good grades then, even envying him because
    “If I had grades like him, my parents wouldn’t expect any better from me.”
    Looking back I realize this is more my parents fault than his.
    Now I’ve been diagnosed with it as well ironically, and I didn’t get any extra attention like he did but I realized- I didn’t really WANT any.
    I was a kid, who saw my brother getting so much more attention than me and felt jealous and unloved.
    I don’t really hold anything over my brother anymore, meaningless envy for years gone.
    I can understand Blossomfall. Although I believe she should’ve tried harder to really understand what Briarlight was going through, in the warrior cat universe where people don’t really even tell each other things I cant blame her.
    If her mother had given her as much attention as Briarlight this wouldn’t be an issue. So of course it’s Millies fault, and not her sisters but Millie is her mother.
    I used to wish something happened to me like breaking my arm as a kid, just for some attention. I would lie a lot just to get reactions.
    I wonder if I would be able to make more friends if I wasn’t so jealous and lonely in the past
    I obviously know better now, but I still regret those years.

    i'm physically disabled and use a wheelchair, and to be honest i wish they kept briarlight disabled in starclan, as a sort of sentiment that she lived a happy and fulfilled life with her disability and it wasn't something that needed to be changed. in her life, other cats fretted and panicked over her disability, and viewed and talked about her as if she was incomplete. i feel like it would have been a nice conclusion for her to remain disabled in starclan to show that she was always complete. instead i feel like they reinforced this idea by "fixing" her disability in heaven.
    it reminds me of people always hoping that my disability will be magically cured (it's chronic unless you're really lucky), and viewing my life as sad when i'm really grateful for the life that i have, disability and all. there are some things i won't experience, but there are joys i have that i get from being disabled. i love the feeling of the ground rumbling beneath my wheelchair, and i love that my disability has made me slow down and appreciate moments as they happen. i'd miss out on so much more if i spent all my time hoping that i can be cured like others seem to do for me.
    disabled lives can be whole and complete and full of joy, and i feel like they really missed out on sending that message home when they "fixed" her in the end. i wouldn't want my disability to be taken away in the afterlife, i'd just hope that heaven has ramps.

    About Blossomfall, I knew a family who functioned essentially the same way as this. Two parents, one disabled (mentally, not physically, however) child, and two non-disabled children. The mother was obsessed with her daughter's disability and any attention was focused on her. She never had the same negative reaction as Briarlight, mostly because she was too young to understand and couldn't express it regardless of if she wanted to, as she was nonverbal. The father didn't do that but didn't pay as much attention to his other children anyway. One child remained unjealous and sympathetic whilst the other became bitter and angry, with much of that directed towards his sibling. I feel empathy towards them because they were young and didn't know better than to be jealous of her, and their parents were most definitely neglectful of their needs.
