Have just finished testing Sony XM3 and Sennheiser wireless Momentum 2.0 (aka HD1) side by side for 2 weeks more or less day and night (risking serious connubial imbalance) with all kinds of music, but mainly jazz, fusion, chill and ambient material - as for noise cancelling (and some extra features) the Sony is on top, but as for sound quality, especially at the (for me) very important low end, to my surprise I feel that the XM3 comes out second to the (ageing...) Momentum! The Momentum delivers a precise, punchy and detailed bass (e.g. on Charlie Haden's solo on 'Folk Songs' you can hear the strings purring individually - almost as if you stood next to him) vs a somewhat overpowering and ever so slightly imprecise bass output from the Sony's. Worst of all, such a noticeable (and seeming to be increasingly popular) boom-boom low end tends to distract and bleed into the mids, and actually started stressing me after a while. Of course everything is in the eye, err, ear of the beholder, so don't take my word for it. Also, you could probably improve things using an equalizer. But as a jazz player (and listener) for over 40 years having used all sorts of high-end equipment for decades, I am reasonably confident about my impression. I guess it all depends on your intended use and the surrounding environment - do you rather prefer pristine overall audio quality, or a quite a few dB less of (mid/treble) ambient noise but a slightly overpowering low end when listening?
