Hard pruning is hard not that much for the plant but for the person. Many of us, are really fearful to prune that much but it's worthy, if we have proper information.
I chopped mine leaving only 2 leaf nodes at the bottom😱 Now I have 8 cuttings on the go in pots, the leader in a glass of water and I’m delighted to say that there are 2 new leaves sprouting from the original cut. Hopefully I will have a rubber tree plantation in a few months👍🏻 Thanks for the demo!
I recently did this to a very old leggy rubber plant I have. I tried to propagate the stems in water to no joy, but the two stems that I planted straight in soil rooted within two weeks. I now have loads of new growth on each stem along the various leaf nodes and it looks better than ever 😀
What I do to keep my rubber trees keep growing straight up, is to keep rotating the pot every week. Plants grows towards the light, so by rotating the pot I automatically ask the plant to grow towards the other side in a natural way. This way it grows a strong stem. All my rubber trees are straight, high, have strong stems and grow faster this way. I also do this with some of my other indoor plants, but always with all my seedlings for my vegetable and fruit garden or kitchen garden if you will.
I have read in the past that you actually cannot root cuttings from a rubber tree. That you have to actually make slits, just below leaf nodes, and use some sphagnum Moss to put in the cut and close it up with Saran Wrap to root inside that, and then you can cut it off. I may try this, when i get ready to move the giant thing out, this spring!
I just did this to a fallen over plant. It was a 8ft tall, 12yr old plant, It was relaxin gon the floor this morning, and after one fall a few years back I'm in need of something more than growing up... I'm hoping things work out well.
Here I am again Mr Sheffield. Still doing my deep dive into my ficus elastica pruning.😁 My, how things have changed in 2 yrs! Look at that empty wall behind you. You’ve added so many plants to that space, Question: Why can’t you just root that entire top piece that you cut off?
I want to do this on my plant, it got really tall and only one stem. But question? Is it possible to keep top stem like that without cutting into small cuttings or it won’t survive like that?
Can you keep the propagation bigger or is there a maximum amount of leaves per propagation you can keep? Because my plant has gotten very leggy after overwatering. So I want to restart this spring.
Thank you for your video! I did everything as you did. But there is one question: How long does it take till you can see some roots? The cuttings are in the water for two weeks now. I changed the water a few times but there are still no roots. :(
@@SheffieldMadePlants I am so glad that I found your video one year ago! My rubber plant looks amazing now! Three beautiful and voluminous stems are growing and growing now! There is a new leaf every week! Shiny und dark green! Thank you a lot!!! 😊
You can yes but you need to be careful about the cutting having too many leaves. Normally you only want a couple so they don't draw too much moisture while the cutting is developing roots.
@@SheffieldMadePlants no not yet I'm a new plant parent but I've got 27 now trying to remember all the names and I've always got my head stuck in book. I watched you do a vine plant you did cuttings I copied you and have another plant now 👍
@@SheffieldMadePlants that's it I got one the day that's like a lime green and a string of hearts. I need to slow down my living room is like a jungle 😂
Question ✋ What was the reasoning behind keeping the stem quite long? Is there a danger in cutting too low? Or is that just where the node was? (I’m about to cut mine)
I thought it might be a bit too woody further down to get a good new stem. Probably could have gone a bit lower on reflection. Let me know how you get on
if a rubber tree which is planted in ground (in zones 10-12) is wonky, is there any way to make the main trunk more firm? It's only 1.5 ft tall, and my goal is to make it very bushy from 2ft off the ground up to about 8-10ft high. Do you have any suggestions that I should do to to achieve this goal?

It’s drastic but you get a better plant out of it. Mine looking much fresher now

How'd it go?
Where is the update to this video? I want to see how the main stem branched out and how many of thr cuttings rooted and were planted ?

You probably can. Easier to root in small pieces
Did you ever make a update video? I’ve been looking but can’t find it???
I've not no. I have shown it in videos but nothing dedicated. It ended up growing 3 new stems so success

Yes but I’d only have 4 leaves at the most. They draw too much water otherwise
Can I ask at what height would you cut a rubber plant to branch out . My rubber plant is currently 28 inches. One year old. Repotted last September
Can you keep the propagation bigger or is there a maximum amount of leaves per propagation you can keep? Because my plant has gotten very leggy after overwatering. So I want to restart this spring.
Hey, just found your video about propagating tips, so I now understand why I shouldn't just leave the cutting too big 🙏
any follow up video after the cuttings?
Not for the cuttings
Couldn't you just take a stick and stick it in the pot and tie the stick to the stem?
Is it ok to put it into the water directly after the cutting, just like you did in the video? Or is it better to wait few hours?
It’s fine going straight in
My neighbour just threw out a 2meter tall one, I saved it from the trash and I will try this because it looks really sad with almost no leaves.🤞
Good luck 🤞
Fantastic!! That is what I would have done!!!
Would rooting hormone help/expedite the process at all? My rubber plant is SUPER leggy
I’ve not noticed much difference with rooting powder to be honest
Side question on rubber plant - the edges of my leaves are really brown and black - can I partially cut my leaf and if so will it grow back?
Nope the leaf won’t grow back unfortunately
Also, could you cut it closer to the soil of you wanted a shorter bushier plant?
Yes I think so
After cutting, should you be watering the main stock, or is it better to leave it more dry?
Treat it as you normally would
Can I keep the top as is? Do I need to cut it down completely?
Might struggle to root with so many leaves
Why aren’t you planting in soil?
Hi! Can I prune right now? or is it too late?
Prob best waiting till early spring
When is right and wrong time to do this?
It’s best in spring and summer but can be done anytime
How many of those cuttings survived into plants?
I only kept a few. There were too many to handle!
@@SheffieldMadePlants So why did you cut them all if they were too many to handle?
@@motarski I think he sold them or smth

Anywhere you'd like it to branch out from

2 weeks is too soon. Ficus are slower to root. Maybe 4 weeks to start seeing something

Ciao la mia le o cambiato vaso non aveva più terra lo comperata cosi ora a le foglie un po abbasate ancke prima perché 😢
Why didnt you cut lower lower lower
Why not just give the trunk a support pole?
It had various support poles but would always end up defeating them
I would advise trying with pencils and tape, worked for my two upstemmed coleus

@@SheffieldMadePlants Thanks for replying and proving my assumption wrong. I was worried when I watched the video. I am just happy it worked.
this is foolish

Pruning it and giving it lots of light should thicken the trunk
