    trans person here. Lauren referring to her own gender experiences is likely gender EXPRESSION (clothes, makeup, hair, etc.), not gender IDENTITY (inner personal feelings about how you want to live and be perceived). presenting in a way that does not conform to your gender identity does NOT change your identity.

      I'd like to add, as one of the lesbian cis women out there that prefer to dress outside my gender stereotypes, is that they are just that, stereotypes. Gender is not the objects/attire we choose to adorn ourselves in. Gender is not a choice. The things a person chooses to wear is vastly different from the gender identity they are. Neither cis nor trans women have to wear a dress to be female. And if that makes society uncomfortable, too bad. LOL
      Lauren thinking that her desire to wear more masculine clothes in any way makes her an equivalent to trans or gender non conforming identities is just plain wrong.

    • @AllyGatorAnimator
      @AllyGatorAnimator 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This is spot on.
      I would add the caveat that gender expression can lead to people discovering more about their gender identity, or at the very least have people ask questions about their identity and want to know more about themselves. (e.g. wanting to explore your gender identity because you feel comfortable expressing yourself outside of deeply-engrained stereotypes isn't necessarily farfetched), but the difference is, as you said, what you truly feel within yourself after asking those questions and how you want to live.
      Lauren's made the mistake of assuming expression is a direct equivalent.
      (EDIT: Fixed the last sentence because it was a bit misleading).

Because of this and many other gripes I've had with the Tonys recently, this was actually the first time in my life I didn't watch. As someone who is currently going to school for stage management, what happened to Nora absolutely sickens me. Their health should have came first and they should have been allowed to have that surgery, no questions asked. I'm currently stage managing a play at my old middle school as a part of my service learning project, and with everything that's happening with Covid, if one of those kids ever came up to me and told me they weren't feeling well, my first instinct would be to talk to the people who run the after school program who oversee rehearsals and the director of the show. Health and safety should be the priority of anyone in any workplace. I know not all people who go to school for stage management end up having that as a life long career (good stage managers only go so far, but great stage managers can do it for the rest of their lives) but those who do have that privilege should always have the well being of their actors, stage crew, and everyone else in between in mind. The fact that Ira Mont didn't advocate for Nora's health and well being goes to show where his loyalties lie.
    Jagged Little Pill at this point is just a huge mess and will be one of the shows that goes down in history for being insensitive to the trans/non-binary community. If this isn't any indication that our industry needs many big changes asap, I don't know what is.

    The idea that this character is nb is huge for broadway. I dream of playing Fieryo or another male character one day but I have known it will never happen due to my sex being female. (Sex is how you were physically born as, Gender is how you identify) and as a nb person, this is something that we have all had to come to terms with. So with Jo being a nb person, it means that a nb person whose sex is male could also play them as much as I could. They would change keys maybe for songs and all that but it opens the conversation about gendered casting. I could play Fieryo whose character is a boy and I would play him as a boy but the keys could be changed for it to work. It would make casting fluid and that is a beautiful idea. We do it all the time in theater for kids so the idea we could do it on a bigger stage is something I hope to see more of. Jagged Little Pill missed a huge chance to prove this point to many Broadway producers and didn't. It is so sad to me as a nb person but I hope this is not the end for this idea.

    I think this is a scandal that has so many levels of bad that the LAST thing Lauren Patten should have done was draw more attention to it at the Tonys. A character being changed from non-binary to cis in the move from off-Broadway to Broadway is not good and it's problematic. It is not the most shocking thing that has ever happened between workshops. I think if that was the ONLY thing that had happened people would be upset and angry, but it probably would have faded. The gaslighting and lecturing and twisting what was and wasn't fact was far worse to me in terms of trying to court a community for their money while not being truthful about their intentions. Then adding in all the negligent health stuff is just ANOTHER layer. Then adding in Lauren's attempts to cover for herself that were horribly misguided. Then to open your Tony speech that way - just no. No.

Considering how much the general population have started to really look into celebrities and celebrity culture during the pandemic and noticing how dissociated all of these celebrities are from the rest of us, I also don't find it surprising. It's hard to believe that after ALL, Lauren decided to accept the award. I actually can't understand how and why she did it. Was she forced to accept it like if nothing happened? Was it her own decision? Does she really understand what she did there? Even if she doesn't give a shoe about trans and non-binary community, is her ego THAT big that she needed this award instead of taking the chance of getting a little peace after the controversy? At this point, keep trying to save this show it's just a stupid decision.
    Talking about the fact that JLP is problematic, it makes me mad how people ignore that Frankie is a terrible character too, very offensive to bisexual women. She is basically a stereotype of bisexual women being cheaters. And the way it has been ignored, only shows that Broadway and Broadway fans don't really care about bisexuals and, once again, about women. Honestly, the pandemic opened my eyes to the abuses of Broadway- I think so many of us know that it goes on in places like Hollywood, but it’s still so hush hush when it comes to Broadway. I hope that everyone who’s been affected are able to heal.
    I have a feeling we’re gonna hear a lot more horror stories, and I really do hope it gets heard and spread and taken much more seriously. Broadway needs an HR department.

    At the end of the day, Broadway is a business and that's what they continue to show time and time again. While the community is important, it's just truly not accessible as much as they claim to want it to be.

For all we know, had he lived, he might have tweaked Rent for 2021 like many composers do in revisiting their work. We also have no idea what else he might have done.

    Why are people blaming Lauren for accepting her tony award. She's an actor. She did her best and the academy thought so too, she deserved what she got. Why is everyone so concerned about you have to be bi or gay or to play a bi or gay role, so what should they never get a chance to play a straight character ever if they liked the story, it's called acting people! I mean Tom cruise isn't really a pilot, Robert Downey junior isn't really a billionaire iron man, it's a fake character! The producers picked the best actor. That's their job. Get over it people, you didn't like the show then don't go again, if you think you could write a better Broadway musical and direct it that, wins multiple awards, then go right ahead!!! 1. I don't blame Lauren for not leaving the show ...at all. Its a job (a good one at that) if she left who knows how long it would take to find another one. She still has bills to pay.
    2. This whole thing of only trans people can play trans roles and only gay people can play gay roles, is harmful. When you put people in box its very limiting.i doubt trans woman only want roles specifically written for trans woman. Trans actresses want to be able to play any woman. Puting these limits on marginalized people give the powers that be ammunition to use against them. (Ie: trans people stay in your trans box and cis people will stay over here with the majority of the opportunities.) It's already hard for gay actors to get non gay work.

    • @soyboy6953

      Replying to your second point: Trans women understand the experience of women, of course, but cis women do not understand the experience of trans women. We are not putting marginalised people into boxes, we are allowing them to express their own stories. Trans people deserve to be allowed to act in the parts of trans characters. That’s what we’re saying. We are saying nothing about trans people being excluded.

    • @raaid22
      @raaid22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soyboy6953 I know what you are saying, but the argument can made for the other. Many gay men are already put in boxes of "gay role only" and they struggle because those roles are few and far between.
      And trans women doesnt know what it's like to be cis woman and vice versa. Just like white man doesn't know what it's like to be a blackan and vice versa. There are differences, and these differences influence our experiences.

Since the musical is about another virus that killed a lot of people and the phrase „dying in america“ is in direct reference to that. It seems more of a social commentary that transcends the show to todays world, than whoops we forgot it said that. In regards to singing a song from Rent, initially about AIDS after the Covid pandemic, as the Tony's way of sort of saying they are comparable events doesn't sit well with me at all. Obviously they were both viruses that killed many people and was awful for those involved. However, the AIDS crisis caused segregation and strong homophobia, which those who caught covid did not have to deal with. When thinking about AIDS, we shouldn't just be sorry for the lives we lost, we should feel sorry for the people who had to endure discrimination every single day.

I would say they are definitely comparable since comparing doesn't mean equating, you can compare to say they are different, as you did in your comment. Also there have been studies that have found a lot of similarities in the way the US government handled both viruses, so you can denounce both in a similar way. I agree that the AIDS crisis became yet another homophobic trope that contributed to segregation, and that cant be said about covid. But you can find similarities in both in one context, and tell them apart in another.

    I think that JLP won best book just because the other ones weren’t good written either (like for example, Moulin Rouge’s finale was very anticlimatic and short, while JLP had time to close all its themes from the mom’s story and the dauther’s story).
    That being said, it shouldn’t had won any awards 😅. Actually, this Tony Awards should never have happened.

    And the cis book won a fucking Tony just listen to the original album. also this is the first time I’ve heard about Nora this story should be spread more and Ira Mont needs to be held accountable. Just a little kiss 😘 for Nora. And I agree with the Aaron stuff, favorite broadway boy but a cis white man saying “by the many and not the few” was a little sus. We Stan Julie Andrews

    I would like to thank you for making this video. I actually am a non-binary lesbian and I barely get any representation I can be proud of for either of those things (especially the enby part). When things like this happen, it feels like the majority telling me I don’t matter, and that really hurts, but seeing insightful, intellectual videos like this made by people like yourself crying out and saying I do matter, it makes me feel a lot more real, and like I do matter

    I never even heard of this musical. When did it first debut?

    This video rubbed me the wrong way. I’ll just dump my thoughts out. How can you compare a White actor playing a Black character to a “cis” actor playing an nb character? What a terrible example. As for the character formally wearing a binder, sports bras do very little to flatten breasts. It makes sense for a woman to wear a binder to flatten their breasts but overall, they can be very damaging to healthy breast tissue. They shouldn’t be endorsed ever. Although I understand the need for “representation”, masculine women exist. Butch lesbians exist. If the purpose of Jo’s character is to show a person who is not openly accepted in society, a butch lesbian can fulfill this day. Out of all the people you can complain about, why not the casting director? Why not the producers? It's very telling and abundantly clear why the female actor was the target of scrutiny. Do butch lesbians have a lot of compelling and nuanced roles on Broadway? Yes or no. As for the replacement actor, if you have serious medical issues, you need to schedule them before a major project like this. This sounds cruel but this isn’t a job where needing weeks off is acceptable. Like I said, the anger is misdirected.

      If Lauren didn’t thank the trans community, y’all would’ve still been mad. Julie Andrews can afford to decline awards. She has an established career. Once again, bad comparison.

    16:40 But honestly... that's what ALL awards shows are.
    And I might add, it will also reinforce a gender binary so long as they insist on handing out separate awards for actors and actresses. Where would we place a non-binary actor's performance if they were to be nominated? The Grammys got it right a few years ago when they got rid of the gendering for vocal performances.
