Glenn Vilppu. Such a legendary talent. His classes changed my entire brain years ago He he isuch an important artist and a phenomenal teacher. Glenn is an experience.
Interesting is how this squeeze is handled by the pen. Like maybe it’s possible now to create a small grip that has a physical button bump in it. So it will feel even more like you press a real button. Also part of the front of the grip can have and indicator of where the brush is “flat” to eat will be even easier when using barrel rotation to know what is the flat va wide side of a brush
Rotation feature is more akin to Vilppu broadstroke technique or using a flat brush. I do yse the overhand grip sometimes, its great for drawing the clothed figure.
I just wish there was more ram, i do digital sculpture as well it tends to bottle neck when my file gets too large. Though i do have the option of using my pc and cintiq I like the portability. I probably will upgrade to m2 or m4 pro this year. The barrel roll is kool I used to use it on my cintiq 6d art pen but honestly rarely do nowadays.

Hi Adam, me and my wife are long time fans of your channel! We have three little boys, the oldest being 4,5 years old. He really likes to draw, but on hand he gets quickly discouraged when given some critique or when seeing how good me and my wife draw, on the other, when complimented, he thinks he's the best painter. I know you have good results with introducing your children to the arts, so I'd greatly appreciate if you could do at least a short vid about how to guide your children towards drawing and getting better at it.
I wanted a bigger iPad screen! 😫 but it’s okay, maybe someday they’ll make it. I don’t like the double tap feature either, I just turned it off. Can’t wait to see your review of the Apple Pencil Pro.✏️
Great! the M2 will be more accessible now, i've had a 2021 ipad pro max M1 11 inch since 2021. I have progressed so much with my drawings that a new ipad is well deserved.
I’m glad that I waited until now to upgrade from my 2018 Pro. The hover almost had me a couple years back but the new pencil and etched glass were the tipping points this time around. Just very unfortunate that the Pencil Pro doesn’t work on anything other than the new Pros and Airs.
I have a 6th Gen iPad with 1st gen Apple Pencil, it’s underpowered. In drawing apps I have limited layers so I have to merge layers, and sometimes the app just closes on me while drawing, it really breaks out of my focus, and it’s frustrating. I wish I can get a new M4 iPad Pro with the new Apple Pencil for future proofing. At least I’ll keep an eye on WWDC next month to see what software updates will be provided, and I’d love to see improvements on iPadOS so it can take advantage of the extra power from the M4 chip.
I have a big problem with the apple pencil ! It is not a problem with the pencil but maybe my own hand or grip. I was using it for over 18 months and i couldn't get used to it. When i lift the pen i lose grip and the moment i draw a line somehow i double tap by accident. I had to turn of this function because it was switching to eraser at least 5 times in a 2 hour drawing period. When i saw that the new pencil not only gonna keep the double tap function but it will apply a squeeze one, that will be a nightmare in my hand. Maybe i have too strong grip but it drives me crazy. What i like is the rotate function. I am looking forward to see Adam review on it.
Was waiting for you to weigh in! Apple Pencil Pro isn’t compatible to the M2 iPad Pro. Apple Pencil Pro has double tap in addition to the squeeze. Agreed on two buttons. I wish they did that, and am curious what will happen with Sidecar with the squeeze. M2 iPad Air doesn’t have the same screen as the M2 iPad Pro.
The Apple Pencil Pro is only compatible with the two iPads that were just announced, the M4 iPad Pros and the M2 iPad Airs. It won’t work with any earlier iPad for one big reason. The landscape camera necessitated moving the charging coils and magnets around to accommodate the cameras, which meant a redesign of the Apple Pencil. The magnets and coils are in the wrong place to work with older iPads. That also means the older Pencil 2 won’t work with the newer iPads either. It stinks, but that’s the price to pay for a landscape camera.
Apple products look amazing for artists but there's one issue that doesn't let me use it as a daily driver for art - posture and sight issues. As much as various stands help, the small sized of screen and hunching forward is just a huge issue for long time use. I just use big oled screen and Xencelabs pen tablet (with a stand for better angle) and it does everything it should without wireless connection issues, pen is comfortable and doesn't require charging, physical buttons don't get clicked unintentionally and can be activated with very slight pressure. Also using iPad for industry standard software like Photoshop and Zbrush is possible but very troublesome. I'm planning to get an iPad Mini soon to use it as a sketchbook during travel (it can be easily held in one hand without exhaustion). Personally I'd love if Apple made pen tablet, not display pen tablet since iPads already fill the gap in market.
This is so true and easily overlooked by people. I honestly don't understand how so called professional artists can work on the iPad for hours? My 12.9" iPad Pro collects dust and mainly using it to watch media from time to time because I never could find a proper and comfortable posture to use it and I've tried everything from stands to all kind of DIY thingies. So I always end up using my Intuos Pro L hooked to a 27" 4k monitor. My back and neck are straight and I can work like that for hours (breaks included).
@@dpcdpc11 I'm personally using LG C2 42" OLED 120Hz tv as my monitor and never had so much comfort as with this screen. I don't use HDR for working with colors, but it's great for sculpting since all highlights and shadows are so much more visible. Also small screens are fine for drawing, but seeing UI is actually really difficult on screen and making it bigger reduced your workspace size and industry standard software tends to have UI taking lots of space (which is not a case for Procreate for example). Pen tablet stand that will prop it at 30-40 degrees help with wrist comfort a lot too (iPad stands are perfect for it, I use ParcSlope stand). One more factor to consider is iPads are 4:3 screens (similar A4 page format), not 16:9 which is most common format for fullscreen digital art. Ironically it may be (or not, depends on art purpose) to create art for digital media on iPads (such as environment concept art or scene renders).
If you know you'll be holding something up you should consider using a smaller aperture and adjusting your lighting for it, your auto focus is going wild in this video.
Hello. You can use an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil as a drawing screen for your Mac, either via WiFi or cable. Granted, Apple needs to perfect it (and so far they have neglected this feature) but the option is definitely there.
Hi, I'm curious if you've tried drawing on the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra? The screen is 14.6" and it works with the Wacom One Pen. It also has Infinite Painter and the screen is AMOLED 2X. I like the Wacom pen so it sounds interesting to me. If you did try it, I'm curios about your opinion on it.
Ooh thank you for this! I was holding out to see if the need releases will be worth the wait, will I have a 2017 ipad and a sketchbook so I’m ready for an upgrade either way
The difference between both new ipads is the display, I think OLED is more suited for color accuracy, not that the ipad air has a bad screen, but I think that’s still in IPS panel, so no HDR and no real black blacks
@@AdamDuffArt Not sure which compatibility chart you were looking at, but on Apple Store's compatibility list for Apple Pencil Pro only list the M4 iPad Pro and M2 iPad Air.
@@AdamDuffArt if I didn’t have m2 iPad Pro, the Apple Pencil Pro would’ve closed the deal for me. But I had hoped at least Apple might provide a work around for using Apple Pencil Pro on my 12.9 6th gen. I did hear the relocation of the cameras and the new tech charging of pencil is why they didn’t bother to make it backward compatible. Oh, well😂
There's actually a technical reason why the 6 year old v2 pencil doesn’t work with older iPads. Users have been complaining for years about the FaceTime camera being way off to the left in landscape orientation, but moving the camera to the long side required re-engineering the pencil charging and magnet configuration. This unfortunately meant breaking compatibility in both directions. Yes, it sucks, but it’s not entirely arbitrary.
To me the big difference with the ipad air is that it only has 8gb of RAM. While 16gb in the ipad pro offers the possibility for bigger canvases and more layers in Procreate
If you don’t need “pro motion(over 60hrz refresh rate)” or Face ID, get the iPad Air. Plus starting at 128gb now it’s a lot easier to justify it’s price.
Is the 120 pro motion refresh rate important for an iPad when you’re drawing? Because I’m pretty sure the new iPad Air doesn’t come with it. It only has a 60 hertz specs…
The M2 iPad Air isn't just a rebrand of the M2 iPad Pro. The M2 Air lacks the XDR display, ProMotion, face ID, Thunderbolt, has only one camera, and only two speakers. If you don't care about those things, it looks like a good deal. If you do care, the now discontinued M2 iPad Pros will be a better choice and probably won't cost much more.
My 2020 iPad Pro is starting to lag a little and always wish I could get more layers out of procreate, plus it lacks hover. I'm ready to upgrade, unfortunately prob gonna have to go all in for M4 for the OLED and the Pro pencil compatibility.
The pencil pro is not compatible with older iPads. They had to change the system that charges the pencil and the magnets because the camera now sits below the pencil docking area.
In my opinion the big difference between the AIR and the Pro is the display. :) Refresh rate: 60 Hz vs 120 Hz Colors: Standard vs HDR Brightness: 500 vs 1000 nits (1600 HDR content) Less important Pro features: - Can be upgraded to 16 GB ram. (More layers.) - Nano-texture display glass option on 1TB and 2TB models. (Almost no reflections of the surroundings for a minor quality loss.) Annotation: There are actually two versions of the M4-Chip. One for 256 and 512 GB, and one for 1 TB+.
I would still go for the iPad pro instead of the air for pro motion, that feature really elevates the pen experience on the pro. I may change my fantastic m1 iPad Pro that I have had since it launched back in 21 all because of the Apple pencil pro that new functionality is something greatly appreciated, the current doble tap function is pure rubbish to me it hasn’t work reliably enough ever.
Hi Adam if you had to choose the glass for the new ipad screen would you just go for standard or the new nano glass? for art purposes mainly would love to hear your take on this EDIT: also the new ipad air is basically ipad pro m2 with worse screen (Liquid retina instead of hdr) but it also means its half price of ipad pro basically and now it has 1tb option too
I’ve also been praying for an IPad cintqie that I could use on my desk next to my PC it would be a game changer. It would also be be like $5000 but I don’t care.
What do you think of the nano-textured glass for drawing? The glossy slickness of an iPad display against my Apple Pencil always bothered me. Sure you could get one of those filters, but putting them on is a pain and now Apple offers slightly rougher textured glass. It sucks that you can't get it on an iPad Pro under 1TB, but what if it were available across all storage sizes? Would the added friction be better for drawing on?
we NEED the rotation, we need tablet companies to understand that barrel rotation is a sorely missed feature to their stylus. It's not just about mimicking traditional tools, barrel rotation speeds up the process and brings more versatility to the stylus. It's way more needed than higher pressure sensitivity, we should not downplay apple's choice of implementing it to their apple pencil, this is by far the main feature of the new ipads (for digital painters), if other companies realize they missed this oportunity they can hopefully start producing stylus with barrel rotation. Wacom missed that opportunity by discontinuing production of the Art pen which was the first stylus that had barrel rotation.
My only inquiry is about about the Nano-textured glass, does it affect pencil feel on glass? the only info available is about glare and Oled light distribution which I don't really care about, my only concern and waiting for review is does it feel like those paperlike matte texture while using the pencil
Thanks. Great video :) I was wondering, when you talk about bridging the gap between iPad and macbook/iMac, I’m guessing you don’t care much for using it in sidecar mode? I admit it needs some tweaking, but I use it from time, to run some software that only work on my mac. I have an XPPEN 24 artist pro pen display, but sometime I just want to sit in my couch, with my iPad, but still run embrilliance or Inkscape. In those cases I just hook up my iPad via sidecar, to my macbook pro.
I vote for a 22 inch ipad compatible to the Cintiq, Without all the bells and whistles that they put in the ipad that artist don’t need . I’ll take a bigger screen instead . They can call it the iPad Pro artist . A girl can dream !
The M2 I pad air 13” with the Apple Pencil pro is probably the way to go for me as a mostly 3D artist. My I pad mini has a better chip than my current I pad pro and the M4 one is just too much extra money
Nah man - not on older tech. If your audience are mostly mobile users, my old Cintiq is NOT at all reliable - I have to color correct on an iPad, Apple studio display or benq designer monitor
Wait, can't you just sidecar your iPad to your mac and use desktop apps that way? I've never experienced any issues doing this with photoshop. The only reason I needed to do this really was to use my TourBox. When I'm out and about, procreate or Fresco and gestures, then when I get home, sidecar and tourbox. Although Astropad does look interesting...
My problem with the apple pencil is the nib is so thick I can't see the cursor below. I also think the battery is irrelevant for a good drawing experience, it only adds weight and make the pencil out of balance.
I'm really happy with my M2 Pro and I was ready to give a chance for an update if it's reasonable... but honestly i'm really disappointed and happy at the same time. Disappointed regarding the innovation part and really happy I don't feel the need to buy the new one. I think regarding price /value the M2 Pro is still the best decision.
If that matters sure - it’s a perk but not a necessity (for the HUGE price difference) for most artists on a budget The budget option is usually the best one
I wish they just made the ipad pro have mac os or make macbook pro compatible with the apple pencil... and maybe make the screen to completely fold over like how some windows laptops do it like the galaxy book 360
I’ve never understood why they don’t do at least a 16 inch iPad Pro for artists, or even a ‘studio’ pad pro with even more real estate that is basically Apple’s version of a Cintiq, mounted on its own ‘stand’ to avoid distortions and ergonomics and so on. If they did that I think Wacom would be out of business in short order to be honest. I don’t understand why they are putting a M4 chip into an iPad, the performance gains will be negligible for all but edge use cases. The pencil also drives me nuts, but I’m not convinced that this new ‘pro’ pencil addresses the accidental tap or squeeze to be honest.
They just need to make a lager I pad pro with a pro pencil that has buttons and they would kill it man. It doesn't get in the way of the Mac at all, it would enhance it rather
Yeah I like big screen sizes as an artist 13 in still seems kind of small. Samsung has 16 in. I'm thinking I'll probably just get the 13-in air because I don't want to spend all that extra money for just a 13-in screen
@@ErnieZ3D there was rumors that there was supposed to be an iPad ultra that has like a 14 to 16-in screen. But it never came out. In many ways yes - now I have ordered the M4 (because it’s my job too), but I really don’t see how - for illustrators - the M2 13” AIR wouldn’t be the recommendation for most.
was hoping the Apple Pencil Pro was compatible with the M2 I Pad Pro, but that doesnt seem to be the case! rotation would be nice, worked well on the old wacom Art Pen
Glenn Vilppu. Such a legendary talent. His classes changed my entire brain years ago He he isuch an important artist and a phenomenal teacher. Glenn is an experience.
Appreciate these informative videos man. Thank you.
Oh man I was waiting for your opinion specifically. Thanks!
Wow! Thats a great review! Thanks for the shoutout :)
Love the vids, I also wanted the same ‘connect to Mac’ connectivity 🤙
Would the etched glass option possibly add more friction to create a more paper-like drawing experience?
Rotation feature is more akin to Vilppu broadstroke technique or using a flat brush. I do yse the overhand grip sometimes, its great for drawing the clothed figure.
always happy to see your honest opinion on their tech
I just wish there was more ram, i do digital sculpture as well it tends to bottle neck when my file gets too large. Though i do have the option of using my pc and cintiq I like the portability. I probably will upgrade to m2 or m4 pro this year. The barrel roll is kool I used to use it on my cintiq 6d art pen but honestly rarely do nowadays.
Im sure the new Ipads are awesome for 3d and video editing but for drawing I still use my 10th gen Ipad
Exactly
I love my ipadpro. They just need to drop the iMac touch that converts to draw position. Like the surface studio pro
5:20 you can already use ipad as pen display with Mac via sidecar (if connected with cable there is no latency). Pixelmator Pro for Mac works great in that setup, don't know about other apps.
Astropad also lets the iPad act as a pen display
I have progressed so much with my drawings that a new ipad is well deserved.
and lets see you do art pen and paper
I’m glad that I waited until now to upgrade from my 2018 Pro. The hover almost had me a couple years back but the new pencil and etched glass were the tipping points this time around. Just very unfortunate that the Pencil Pro doesn’t work on anything other than the new Pros and Airs.
This is so good, I love this ☺☺
Somewhere in demo, apple dropped a reference to this new pro ipad being as powerful as a laptop or mac. Finally!
Thank you sir ->you keep pushing them to do more!
Yeah, I misread that (and pinned a comment)
I have a follow-up vid coming when I receive the M4 and I’ll clarify that (and my feelings about it )
Apple products look amazing for artists but there's one issue that doesn't let me use it as a daily driver for art - posture and sight issues.
I was waiting for your video on the topic ❤
We knew that Apple had Wacom’s game when we drew, painted or wrote on those iPads matched with those first Apple Pencils
you can already use the ipad as a display for your mac via handoff or whatever its called.
I was holding out to see if the need releases will be worth the wait, will I have a 2017 ipad and a sketchbook so I’m ready for an upgrade either way
Hi! Young artist here, did you buy your ipad pro with standard glass or nano-texture glass???
The difference between both new ipads is the display, I think OLED is more suited for color accuracy, not that the ipad air has a bad screen, but I think that’s still in IPS panel, so no HDR and no real black blacks
Hey Adam, the New Apple Pencil Pro won't work with the last gen iPad 12,9 or 11 pros, despite the last models running the M2. Which is total Bull$hit!
I just realized I mistress - it’s only compatible with the M2 iPad Air and M4 iPad Pro
16:14 I think going for an M2 Pro refurbished is better than an M2 Air
Similar in price, with a better Screen, Brightness etc
hi , in terms of storage what u recommend in any ipad ?
512 gb is quite enough
I legit been waiting for your video - to weigh up if I should upgrade lol
What about ipad mini?
I really wish there was thinner nib. Third party nibs are cool but they sometimes make lines wobbly :(
You said you have a whole video right over here, but it didn't pop up and I can't seem to find it. What is the title?
Oh, seems I forgot to link it - I’ll fix that when I get home
In my opinion the big difference between the AIR and the Pro is the display. :)
Refresh rate: 60 Hz vs 120 Hz
Colors: Standard vs HDR
Brightness: 500 vs 1000 nits (1600 HDR content)
Less important Pro features:
- Can be upgraded to 16 GB ram. (More layers.)
- Nano-texture display glass option on 1TB and 2TB models. (Almost no reflections of the surroundings for a minor quality loss.)
Annotation:
There are actually two versions of the M4-Chip.
Hi Adam if you had to choose the glass for the new ipad screen would you just go for standard or the new nano glass? for art purposes mainly would love to hear your take on this
EDIT: also the new ipad air is basically ipad pro m2 with worse screen (Liquid retina instead of hdr) but it also means its half price of ipad pro basically and now it has 1tb option too
Probably not a big enough market for them to make a pen display. Best we'll get is the tech pushed on the iPad I think.
Awesome thoughts Adam; I am on the fence!! I have an m1 iPad, from 2020, and want pen hover. i’m unsure if the upgrade is worth it. Will keep looking!
Personally I found pen hover to not be that big of a deal at all but it depends on your art style I guess.
What do you think about the new IPad pro's edged glass screen option. Do you think it would make for a better drawing experience?
we NEED the rotation, we need tablet companies to understand that barrel rotation is a sorely missed feature to their stylus.
Thanks. Great video :)
I was wondering, when you talk about bridging the gap between iPad and macbook/iMac, I’m guessing you don’t care much for using it in sidecar mode?
I’m surprised they didn’t make the Apple Pencil Pro in the space black color. Would have been much cooler.
I've always wondered why they are still using 90's peripheral white.
I honestly don't understand the color fidelity statement. If you calibrate your cintiq you can trust it as much as any other high end screen.
Nah man - not on older tech. If your audience are mostly mobile users, my old Cintiq is NOT at all reliable - I have to color correct on an iPad, Apple studio display or benq designer monitor
@@AdamDuffArt fair enough, I assumed you got the latest cintiq model which is fine. If it is an old one, that makes sense.
There's lots of companies that sell different nibs that give a better textured meal that are thinner
waitwaitwait.... apple pencil pro removed the double tap feature? i though they just added the squeeze so we have 2 "buttons"
Before committing to iPad Pro. Apple may also be releasing 14” iPad Ultra this year.
9:55 i think they are relying on apps bringing up quick menus instead of double clicks.
The Apple iPad already connects directly to the MacBook with Apple Sidecar.
Hypothetically yes - reliably, definitely not
@@AdamDuffArt True. lol I didn't bother much with SideCar, but it didn't seem super stable. They just need to focus on it and make it better.
Oh man, I shudder to think of how much a Mac Studio + Apple pen display would cost. I'm sure it'd be amazing to work on though.
Disagree on that recommendation. I’d buy a M2 Pro second hand instead of the M2 Air because of the 120Hz and Mini-LED
If that matters sure - it’s a perk but not a necessity (for the HUGE price difference) for most artists on a budget
The budget option is usually the best one
It's magical how apple goes out their way to not add buttons on the pencil.
I can’t go back to 60hz on the iPad Air
iPad Air are always rebranded pro which makes things confusing
They just need to make a lager I pad pro with a pro pencil that has buttons and they would kill it man. It doesn't get in the way of the Mac at all, it would enhance it rather
Yeah I like big screen sizes as an artist 13 in still seems kind of small. Samsung has 16 in. I'm thinking I'll probably just get the 13-in air because I don't want to spend all that extra money for just a 13-in screen
I dig the 11" for 2d sketching, but for anything more serious I def want a 16"
@@ErnieZ3D there was rumors that there was supposed to be an iPad ultra that has like a 14 to 16-in screen. But it never came out. They said it might come out at the end of next year if it does because I don't think we're getting it this year. If it comes out it would have been announced with the other iPads.
@@williammclean6594 yeah, hoping they still do it sometime soon ish
@@ErnieZ3D yeah because like I'd rather save my money for a bigger screen. I would be really upset if I spent like $3,000 on a maxed out 13-in and then like a 16-in came out.
I thought the new pencil only worked with the new Ipads coming out next week? This video is dated already.
But the apple pencil pro only works with the m4 ipad pro and the m2 ipad air
So you’re saying that I will be fine with my iPad Pro M2 for more years with just illustrating? I still haven’t fully paid it so…
+1 about larger tablets than 13".
