As someone who plays AA Heavy Assault most of the time, I can tell you that staying close to the ground is the best way to avoid lock-ons, however there is a higher risk of being hit by tank shells (if you don't change directions quick enough).
You're a maniac man. You seem to come from a very different school of thought on flying than most people. I notice you do very little 3rd person flying whereas most people tend to do lots of 3rd person and only go into 1st person when engaging a target. It makes sense for that really low flying you do as the 3rd person would probably just mess up your depth perception and make it that much harder to thread those needles. I'm going to have to try some of this stuff myself, you've inspired me.
When I watch you fly I cannot help think of the Star Fox/Wing Corneria Theme. Just awesome man! I've played since the beta, an average player, only just really getting into flying. There are plenty of great tutorials out there but they are all the same floaty/fallie style which, although effective, I just cannot do. This is much more my style, or rather, my idea of style, I just need to learn how to do it! Insta-subbed, please keep the vids coming!
Glad it was helpfull, keep in mind the esf setup is based on game balance almost a decade ago ... many things got debuffed and many pther things got buffed. Nowdays i believe autorepair is pretty good, and there has been cases for flares still, depends on how good you are and your style
+etun proe I agree. After 2 years of Planetside2 i want start to serious learn how to be a good esf pilot. And this was helping me alot. Thanks Davelantor
TIL that I play with a third the framerate and mouse sensitivity of my opponents. Holy shit everything makes so much more sense now! Your gameplay is incredibly smooth by comparison to my own.
Also, when it comes to the performance slot, it seems like hover is the only one worth using. Dogfighting airframe is actually useless in a dogfight, because it doesn't affect pitch speed, and ALL tracking of enemy aircraft is done with pitch. Turning with the A and D keys is useless, roll speed is useless, etc. Racer airframe is also bad because it only increases your speed by a miniscule amount. Hover gives you improved vertical thrust, and vertical thrust has many many good uses.
Thanks a lot, this should help immensely. I think a lot of my problem flying TBH is that the mouse controls just feel so completely backwards to how my hands/brain expect them to work. Sadly, the game doesn't really have gamepad support at this point. I have a feeling if I could get this set up on a 360 controller, I would do much better.
DPI makes a lot of difference, its just that i dont understand why people asked me to share it, in my opinion everyone should tinker with it until they find the best settings they are comfortable with. And not copying somebodies settings, expecting the same results.
Haha this guy play the scythe just like me, so fucking close to the ground that the ennemys feel their haircut changing as i cross the sky above their head
they say the best pilots keep their aircraft one inch away from losing control in other words ballsy aggressive stuff usually catches opponents off guard they never expect you to suddenly fly through the bottom floor of a watchtower and come out the other side or fly under the tree cover so usually break off only to find that same enemy right behind them ;)
i used to do a lof of this kind of maniacal flying on Ace combat 5~6, but using the keyboard and mouse is a lot more difficult to me than a controller lol.
I couldn't see the use of any in the video. If you have two thumb buttons I recommend 'thumb u'p as your vertical pitch and 'thumb down' as landing. I chose landing as 'thumb down' because it allows you to keep your left hand on 'W\S, A, D, Space and Shift' while trying to perform a hot landing if you are in desperate need of repair. It also helps with ducking below enemy rockets or trees.
what i really wish they'd do is make it to where instead on having to move the mouse constantly to turn, make it to where the more you move it, the faster it would turn and you would just have to move the mouse back to stop turning. i dont know though, may be just me who thinks that would be easier, especially for those who dont have much space to move their mouse
davelantor do you ever have a problem where when you are targeting someone down with ur scythe ur aim suddenly drops downwards? It happens all the time to me
Flying is the only thing I can't do in planetside 2. I get a scythe, fly to a base, jump from the scythe and shoot from my gun. Sounds stupid bt that's what I do.
i see many people who set keys or mouse buttons to pitch/look up/down, but you didnt show your in-game keybindings in this video did you use any mouse buttons for pitch up/down?
I just can't get the backwards flying to work :/ I've been trying it in VR forever now. rotate to the side, turn nose towards the ground while holding the thrusters, space and S. Am I missing something?
Excellent flying. (Damn, another flyboy that I cant do anything against from the ground.) Ive done my fair share of "flying" (Freespace 2 mods mostly). Alas, I suck at flying in PS2 for 2 reasons: 1) I cant configure moving the mouse left and right to "turn" instead of rolling the plane (so all my instincts are off) 2) And to a lesser extent, Im not used to rolling my plane to make a turn.
I don't get it. Could not pull this off (backwards flying part and cycling around the "tank") in VR. Is it possible that the scythe behaves now a bit different than in the video?
Fuck people who say DPI doesn't make a difference, I'm using an "intellimouse" which is a low sensitivity optical mouse and my scythe isn't even remotely close to being this responsive even with maxed out sensitivity.
Once I manually set my joystick sensitive and deadzone, I am FAR more affective with it. I fly too many flight sims, so using a keyboard and mouse is unnatural. (Of course ignoring that the PS2 ships fly NOTHING like a real plane)
i am at army right now, doing my service, i will be back making videos on jan 15th and i will see what has changed and might update the tutorial, thx for the headsup ;)
Careful throwing words like "better" around but I disagree with you (doesnt mean ur wrong) because I believe that a player with many kills is helping his empire, and in the current state of the game being able to kill more than your weight is important because many times a faction will have at least 50% population on a single continent especially considering how irrelevant capturing bases in this game actually is. I mean I can't remember the last time I capped a base for anything but experience
way too many buttons for stuff noone ever uses... i mean... squad chat on the mouse? who needs that? pushing buttons on the mouse in a fight kinda fucks up your precision but the keyboard keybinds are quiet nice. Flying low and through obstacles with a scythe is one of the most amazing things for me too. but... when you fly with a moskito... at least when you try to fly cool manuvers like flying through bridges and stuff... it feels like a bucket of water compared to a scythe. the scythe has near to 0 momentum there both other esfs wiggle arround and kinda get hard to controll when you need to make close curves combined with a bit of hovering. what an esf pilot realy can use are the thumbbuttons for turning in close combat (nose up and down). im not sure about logitech since i tried out the M545 model of their series i feel like they're a bit too heavy for a good precission but that kinda depends on the player i guess. but the lazer of it was terrible, when i made slow movements with it, it kinda stops and goes cause it couldnt regestrate the movement good enough on my original Planetside 2 Mousepad ^^ you made a good movie there. today its kinda outdated. noone uses nightvision anymore. we go for thermal cause they kinda screwed to hotspot enemys with nightvision. or i would say... they OPed the thermal. even metal things like tanks are all arround hotspoted they need to fix this more preciese like just hotspotting engine parts wich realy get warm. to make nightvision more usefull.
i had a use for every button on the mouse ... even there were times i had to decide what to leave out ... but that is because i sometimes like to fly single handed :P ... and during squad leading, it comes handy to have different keys for ts, platoon, squad
sure, i believe that. the question is, do i believe that the benefit for those buttons overcome the aspects of precision and cost. i don't belive that but it depends on the player i guess. i like my mice lightweighted and precise. those buttons would confuse me all the time and they add weight. i'm just saying you can have a good gaming mouse for the half price and for planetside more than enough.
yeah i am a bit of a heavy gear kinda guy, but total respect for guys that want light and fast gear o7 :) it can make real difference when you need to make fast motions and aim quickly ... all boils down to preferance :)
K/D means absolutely nothing in planet side. a player with 0.2 k/d can be much better than a player with 8 k/d. planetside is about supporting your squad and capturing the objective not about how many people you can point and click at.
No Comtosit amor, no no NOO!! Why not you ask? I say you why not! The composit Armor protect you only vs Flak and Infrantry weapons. You need Autorepair!!! Thats the ONLY usefull thing in these catigory!!
As someone who plays AA Heavy Assault most of the time, I can tell you that staying close to the ground is the best way to avoid lock-ons, however there is a higher risk of being hit by tank shells (if you don't change directions quick enough).
flying in PS2 now is absolutely HELL, but seeing your videos i feel like starting flying again. You make it look so easy! Awesome flying skills!
You're a maniac man. You seem to come from a very different school of thought on flying than most people. I notice you do very little 3rd person flying whereas most people tend to do lots of 3rd person and only go into 1st person when engaging a target. Insta-subbed, please keep the vids coming!
thanks for the tips dude, loved the vid for sure.
i liked when you came around that pillar and got that tank on the ground was gnar!
Best guide I found, and it’s almost a decade old!
Glad it was helpfull, keep in mind the esf setup is based on game balance almost a decade ago ... many things got debuffed and many pther things got buffed. Nowdays i believe autorepair is pretty good, and there has been cases for flares still, depends on how good you are and your style
When I watch you play I'm like "Yeah! I can totally do that, too!" and then proceed to fail miserably at the hands of the enemy. =(
Thx! For the good and clear instructions. I know I'm going to seriously improve on my scythe flying skills after seeing your vid
Very entertaining... when you are actually in combat anyways.
You seem like a natural.
: )
This is excellent information!
I truly admire your skill - I wish to be able to fly that well one day.
Thanks a lot and waiting for more!
Such a late comment, but trying to learn flying. These videos you make are so helpful! Respect man.
+etun proe Respect to you to man, knowing i helped seriously motives me, let me know what you would like to see
+etun proe I agree. After 2 years of Planetside2 i want start to serious learn how to be a good esf pilot. And this was helping me alot.
Thanks Davelantor
+Chris G no problem ... more videos will come after a month ... still in army :P
TIL that I play with a third the framerate and mouse sensitivity of my opponents. Holy shit everything makes so much more sense now! Your gameplay is incredibly smooth by comparison to my own.
must be nice flying around in a malnourished sharuken. - reaver pilot
nice video!

I felt sick watching you go thourgh those trees
Why they made flying so hard in this game? It would be so cool to see lots of people flying, but now its a chore, noone bother.
how would it be any easier? it is not really hard. people are just not used to the 3 dimensions
I always fly low aswell but i can't say im near as agile as you are. Nice to have someone confim that flying low is actually a god idea :p
DPI makes a lot of difference, its just that i dont understand why people asked me to share it, in my opinion everyone should tinker with it until they find the best settings they are comfortable with. And not copying somebodies settings, expecting the same results.
you are the men the best video tutorial i ever seen ! love you dude hahaha
you're very good man im sick , you are sooooo good at dodging those terrains
you should be no.1 i flying man :D
You can just land and repair if you get away fast enough, And Composite armor lets you survive long enough to do those repairs.
Haha this guy play the scythe just like me, so fucking close to the ground that the ennemys feel their haircut changing as i cross the sky above their head
they say the best pilots keep their aircraft one inch away from losing control
in other words ballsy aggressive stuff usually catches opponents off guard they never expect you to suddenly fly through the bottom floor of a watchtower and come out the other side or fly under the tree cover so usually break off only to find that same enemy right behind them ;)

The key thing to understand is that 'upward' thrust can be redirected to the side or front by exreme banking, yes?
CLOAKY TENGU!
Thanks for the tutorial. Really nice flying!
you are so pro , i wish if i fly like you
Hey Dave! what is your opinion on mouse vs joystick? Thanks!
what i really wish they'd do is make it to where instead on having to move the mouse constantly to turn, make it to where the more you move it, the faster it would turn and you would just have to move the mouse back to stop turning. i dont know though, may be just me who thinks that would be easier, especially for those who dont have much space to move their mouse
Hello davelantor,
I could not understand you in the video so can you post the keys you press when flying backwards? Thanks!
how come when i do any of that it never works.
Also: HOLY STAR WARS BATMAN. I want to be able to do this!
I just realized the same method of flying is also applied to flying drones.
10:00 Best Move you can do! Amazing!
davelantor do you ever have a problem where when you are targeting someone down with ur scythe ur aim suddenly drops downwards? It happens all the time to me
really good flying :D i hope i can do it some day
does it also work for tr? i never won a dogfight, i hit like 3 bullets and die.
Flying is the only thing I can't do in planetside 2. I get a scythe, fly to a base, jump from the scythe and shoot from my gun. Sounds stupid bt that's what I do.
you crushed my dream
genuinely impressed. Favorited so i can learn from it
Nice flying, thanks for the lesson. Do you use pitch up/down buttons, or mouse for that?
simply great play !
i see many people who set keys or mouse buttons to pitch/look up/down, but you didnt show your in-game keybindings in this video
did you use any mouse buttons for pitch up/down?
What controls do you have for the mouse that makes the scythe turn like that?
Btw, my controls suck.
I use intellimouse as well, it is so precise for infantry combat but I miss the high DPI needed for aircraft.
Agreed 100%. Just ask Medics.
I can do that! Hold my beer. :D
*explodes*
The Scythe is far better at flying low and through small crevices, etc. because the thing is so goddamned small.
I just can't get the backwards flying to work :/ I've been trying it in VR forever now. rotate to the side, turn nose towards the ground while holding the thrusters, space and S. Am I missing something?
well if you're using a scythe it might be a bit harder because it has the weakest vertical thrust
Yeah I noticed, I play on NC now and it's alot easier with the reaver :D so I'm flying backwards just fine now
MC JamZam
yup the Reaver has the strongest vertical thrust :3 it's hard to fly a reaver tho, Scythe and Mossy are so much easier for my flight style
A quick way to go up in the scythe is to stop thrust, look almost straight up, then just hold the afterburner and level out.
Excellent flying. (Damn, another flyboy that I cant do anything against from the ground.)
Ive done my fair share of "flying" (Freespace 2 mods mostly). Alas, I suck at flying in PS2 for 2 reasons: 1) I cant configure moving the mouse left and right to "turn" instead of rolling the plane (so all my instincts are off) 2) And to a lesser extent, Im not used to rolling my plane to make a turn.
Hey man thanks I really like you could you tell me ethics server you play on so I can be your wingman
Thank you for the video, very enjoyable!
I don't get it. Could not pull this off (backwards flying part and cycling around the "tank") in VR.
Is it possible that the scythe behaves now a bit different than in the video?
i just startet fliying, and i knew i have to lern a lot, but not even close to that much:o
Your beyond good.......
Thank you so much for this video!
did you change any of the aircraft keybindings?
amazing control .
Cheers, just to keep in mind, its been 11 years since this video and the meta for loadouts has changed a lot
@@Davelantor yea . its been 10 years . still playing . still cant fly like this :3
Nice but what where those weapons
Back in 2012 Composite armor was much better then Autorepair. Check out my recent videos to see my fit :)
heheheh I can clearly see a Tengu as your Background :D
Im sooo glad im on the EU server, so i can't run in to you :D
hmm, i wonder if im wasting my time with the dog fight frame and flyn in third person. might be a time for some change.
what server do you play on?
your a beast pilot
WTF when i press spacebar and S i fall down, how are u going up? and i cant get the hovering in 1 place right :( do u know a really easy way?
Please help, when I fly my scythe I can't do a perfect barrel roll or even fly upside down. Please help!..
bind your "roll right" - Key to G or something and just press it and A at the same time while flying. makes for an awesome maneuver to avoid gunfire
Fuck people who say DPI doesn't make a difference, I'm using an "intellimouse" which is a low sensitivity optical mouse and my scythe isn't even remotely close to being this responsive even with maxed out sensitivity.

(Of course ignoring that the PS2 ships fly NOTHING like a real plane)
I get shot by tanks a lot, what am i doing wrong?
Can be your mouse have something on it's laser and it reads wrong or it is soon dead :)
We are on Miller (EU) :D
Verry nice ty
Too good
Thanks man, I'm a bit late
Youre the best
My Scythe don't fly back :/ Why?
I want to play one day with u
good thing that the keycam i useless because i still cant see anything
why did they make flying so Hard????
sorry for my bad English
Dud they remove this feature? I cant seem to be able to do it
i am at army right now, doing my service, i will be back making videos on jan 15th and i will see what has changed and might update the tutorial, thx for the headsup ;)
+Jason Henrie Maybe we just suck but I can't seem to be able to do it either
Davelantor Okay thanks for the heads up!
Mkingers Yeah maybe we just suck haha
+Jason Henrie I can confirm that it does work. Just did it myself, try practicing more, you should be able to do it too...

what an esf pilot realy can use are the thumbbuttons for turning in close combat (nose up and down).
im not sure about logitech since i tried out the M545 model of their series i feel like they're a bit too heavy for a good precission but that kinda depends on the player i guess. but the lazer of it was terrible, when i made slow movements with it, it kinda stops and goes cause it couldnt regestrate the movement good enough on my original Planetside 2 Mousepad ^^
you made a good movie there.

banja is like Fuck my life
still, WW2 planes are faster than planet side 2 fighters
Dont know if your right or wrong, but youve got to remeber something, called "balance" in video games play a VERY large roll!
then you should swap to the eu server that starts with C
This is outdated. Can you make a new one?
sure, once the new scythe updates come i will do one
please !!
Is this still relevant?
Need to fly in 3rd person far more often. You didn't touch on this at all.
It gives far more awareness.
You idiot
K/D means absolutely nothing in planet side. a player with 0.2 k/d can be much better than a player with 8 k/d. planetside is about supporting your squad and capturing the objective not about how many people you can point and click at.
I am so bad with the Scythe :(
Crazygun567 I used to be bad like you, until I took a training in the knee.
Changeling Grimm A skyrim reference in a planetside 2 video xD
just use the arrow keys
Thats a Tengu not a scythe at the beggining :D
enjoy it sub :)
No Comtosit amor, no no NOO!! Why not you ask? I say you why not! The composit Armor protect you only vs Flak and Infrantry weapons. You need Autorepair!!! Thats the ONLY usefull thing in these catigory!!
your not being quick enough, try attacking and then afterburning after ward
maybe your movements are too predictable idk
