    I am a straight 32 year old male that wears makeup. I wear it specifically because I have bad dark circles that won’t go away and it brings me a lot of self confidence to cover it up. However women should not have to wear makeup if they don’t want to. I tell my wife I think she is beautiful with or without makeup but like me it’s a self confidence thing. So wear makeup if you want or don’t if you don’t. No one should judge you either way.

      you can also just straight up find blister bandages and cut them down to size. they have to be "hydrocolloid bandages" and they have to be adhesive all over, not just band-aid style where the bandage part is unsticky. then just use clean scissors and customize any size you need. soooo much cheaper this way.

    Something I wish I had growing up was seeing fellow Asian ladies showing how to put on makeup on our features. I followed all the directions on makeup packaging and the makeup counter ladies, and it looked awful on me because those weren't meant for my features. One example is cat eye eyeliner, I'm glad Becky mentioned there are alternatives. I learned to follow my lash line and disregard every tutorial that didn't come from someone with eyes like mine. Kids are lucky these days that there are Asian makeup tutorials on TH-cam that are easily accessible.

    A great tip for practicing makeup is to do it later in the day. If you do it right before bed, if its good you can take a picture and if its bad then you're about to do your skincare anyway. If you want to test how long it will last then you can do it as soon as you get home from school or work and if it looks bad no one will see you but you'll still know how long it will last. If it looks great you can go out (if there's no pandemic). I did that on High School and college and it really helps especially when you don't feel confident with it.

    I love that you guys touched on beauty brands in the drugstore having a larger shade range and how they are owned by the same big company as the higher end brands, but I also wanted to let you know they do this on purpose to keep their customer base what they want/like. It’s all selective, if it wasn’t they would put more dark shades in these higher end brands.

    Love the discussion about wearing makeup at work. My first “big girl” job out of college, I was called in to HR and was told I needed to look more put together and more professional and start wearing makeup. Which is when I started buying makeup and watching TH-cam videos to learn. It’s what got me in to makeup so it’s a bittersweet story.

    • @minanowroozi9741

      I hope that doesn’t happen to me as I don’t plan to wear makeup to work :/ I’m a little older now but in my freshman year of college, my professor told the girls in the class to go buy some makeup in preparation for the job fair. It made me so mad. Maybe it’s a stupid thing to be upset about, but I hate that women need to use BEAUTY products and cover up their faces to look professional.

      @sem_stitchwitch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@minanowroozi9741 It depends where you work, but through my professional life (in office work, teaching and tailoring men's suit) I haven't ever /had/ to wear makeup. The main thing was to just look clean and like you take care of yourself for men, women and gender nonconforming folks (so skin care is the primary thing to calm acne or extra oil or dryness). For meeting clients and video calls when I was in an office, it was moisturizer, tinted lip balm and just a smidge of mascara so my features read better (and helping my boss with some colour corrector so he didn't look so sleep deprived 😂 )

    One of my tips especially for people that don’t wear makeup a lot and you’re a bit sensitive - if you have a big event (wedding etc) is to wear makeup the week of the event so your skin gets use to having stuff on it. I did that for my friends wedding a few years back and my skin didn’t breakout the days afterwards or feel itchy during the wedding

    An option that is eco friendly and great for sensitive skin for removing makeup: magic makeup eraser towels. I just add water and it takes off so much makeup with just a plush little towel. I found mine at Bed, Bath, & beyond but you can find dupes almost anywhere that sells makeup. At the end of the week I throw them in with my regular laundry and the makeup always comes out and has never affected the rest of my laundry. I got all my friends to use them and we literally won’t shut up about. Not a spokesperson- just an enthusiast!

      I'm a statistician and have had similar experiences. If you're a woman in a male-dominated field, you're often damned if you do and damned if you don't. If you don't wear make up, you're trying to deny your femininity or trying to be a man; if you do wear make up, you're using your sexuality to get ahead. I don't wear make up for many other reasons (plus I switched careers--went from a statistician to someone who works with aggressive animals! And I like working with aggressive animals a lot better than working with misogynists).

    I think the best part of this podcast, was the regular reassurance that if you don't want to use a particular type of makeup, you don't have to. I've never been into makeup, despite years of people trying to convince me to wear it. At this point, and only for very formal, professional events, at the most I'll wear a little lipstick and/or eyeshadow. But there were nearly two decades, in which I had to really stand my ground about not using certain products. I really appreciate that even though this was a podcast about makeup, the emphasis was to use what you actually want to use, and not what the "fashion collective" says you are supposed to use.

I’ve been gravitating more towards the “clean” products because I have eczema and very sensitive skin, and as a dark skin Latina it was impossible to find items that worked for my skin tone. A fantastic, non-eye irritating makeup remover is Pond’s cold cream. It’s a great first cleanser- you put a little on, gently rub it around- then use a reusable cotton pad and wipe it off, or a makeup towel, and it takes off SO MUCH stubborn makeup. I do stage makeup, full-face paints, and I need a gentle but also diesel cleanser... Ponds is my absolute go to. Then the second cleanser is usually an alcohol-free cleanser (Mario Badescu seaweed cleanser is my current fave), to get that creamy/greasy feeling away from the creamy cleanser.

    Omg thank you Rachel for bringing up that women shouldn't have to feel the need to wear makeup to be professional at work! 49:25
    I had a boss when I was in my later teens (17-19) and worked in clothing retail, our district manager told me I needed to dress more feminine and wear more makeup in order to make sales and do my job properly. I was told if I didn't comply the consequences we're write ups and termination. Thankfully i stood my ground and went to hr but it was coming from an almost middle aged man who wore khaki cargo shorts and flip flops to work 🙄 the hypocrisy was real but it did end up becoming a running joke amongst myself and some coworkers😂

    on the subject about makeup at work, i think it is important to note that you still need to shower brush your teeth and brush or style your hair. However, makeup shouldn't be required ever, unless your some sort of TV personality or model. If men don't have to wear makeup, women don't have to wear it either. simple as that. if your boss has an issue with your acne, that's on them not you.

    loved this episode! i will mention though that when double cleansing, make sure you use whatever oil or oil based cleanser on your dry face before wetting it! The idea is that oil and water don't mix so oil on your dry face (with makeup or sunscreen or whatever has collected throughout the day) will break down those particles more efficiently before using your face wash.
    Usually cleansers that are formulated with oil will turn into a milky texture once you splash water on your face (it'll activate the cleanser) and after this is when you'd use your typical cleanser (gel, cream, water, whatever cleanser works) to clean off any excess makeup, dirt, grime etc. However, if you're using coconut oil or something that isn't necessarily formulated to wash off with water, I would then use my cleanser to help take the oil off my face! The idea is that you'd need something with a soapy texture to help break the oil! If you tried to wash off the oil with just water, you'll find yourself dealing with a weird thick oil texture on your face haha
    Cleansing balms are also another option prior to cleanser! There are some balms that are formulated with plastics or something and isn't that great for the environment though :( My fav oil cleanser that's decently priced (im talking canadian $$$) is the iunik calendula cleansing oil (korean skincare brand) and then i use the cerave hydrating cleanser as my second cleanse :)

But mostly just eyebrows and benetint and out the door😂 no mascara for me, too much of a hassle 🙊 Looooove a good skincare routine thooo

    Bronzer is typically warm toned, contour is usually cooler toned. I use a gel cleanser too Maggie. I do add a cleansing balm if I have a full beat or a smoky eye. Ariel, the cleaning balm is also gentle enough for my super sensitive eyes. I bought a winged liner stamp that really has helped me. It gets me started and I can get the angle right before completing the rest of the line.

    I never wear foundation because I haven't been able to find a color that matches my skin tone. DANG! I just thought of a question to ask and im surprised no one brought it up with them !!
    Ladies in the comments: how do you apply foundation/makeup to your neck without it smudging onto your clothes?? Or do you even need to put makeup on your neck?? I use a Fenty liquid foundation that matches really well to my complexion and I just use that with some spot concealer (and milk hydro boost primer) but i never do my neck because it smudges onto my fashionable clothes and i can't risk that!! T__T I also dont use a powder makeup setter. I just use a setting spray from nyx that works well to give my face a dewyness but it doesn't stop smudging. How do women deal with makeup on their necks, especially when you're wearing nice clothes?? If my foundation matches my face well...do i even need to extend it to my neck? Ive asked one or two of my female friends and there answer was like 'oh....yaaaa....makeup does smudge...' and that was it!!! so i never bothered to ask them again.
    some background about me: I'm a 30 something gay asian male and i recently got into wearing light makeup and i dont have much experience with it other than watching jackie aina vids lol. I got into skincare and my skin improved a lot but i still wanted to feel extra pretty because i'm into K dramas now and the guys and girls look so perfect so i just wanted to up my game a touch.

      @asearchfordelicious 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if it matches your skin tone, you don’t need any on your neck! Just try to blend well just underneath your jawline and as long as your face and neck don’t look different colors, you’re good!

      I'm not Becky, but maybe I can help 😂 I usually buy another foundation so I can mix them together to create a better shade match. If you don't want to get a whole new foundation, there are liquid pigments available (blue, white etc) that you can mix into your original foundation to change the tone or the shade. I've never bought them so idk the brands that sell them, I just know that they're an option. Hope this helps!

  • @AammaK
    @AammaK 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For a huge shade range check Madara, a European certified natural cosmetics brand. Their "Skin equal" foundation is popular, though on the pricier side compared to commercial brands. Here the term "natural cosmetics" is it's own thing completely, you can't sell products as natural cosmetics if it doesn't have one of those specific widely recognized certificates with more or less the same standards like no animal cruelty (ever) and a required levels of organic and fair trade ingredients. The companies are usually local and have smaller selection of products in general, so all shades are not necessarily found everywhere, but the orientation in the past years has been becoming more inclusive as the companies grow and have more resources. Madara is certainly pioneering on that field around here.

    I use to wear makeup but it got to be too much of a hassle since I have such oily skin. My face would always get way too shiney/feel heavy and still can even without makeup. I've been on the same medication for years to try and curb the over oil production my skin makes.😅 At least it keeps me looking younger longer on the plus side.
