As a Christian, I would just like to clarify that not all Christian faith communities are like what they described. (Many are and they make me furious.) However, there are a lot of us that allow and encourage doubt, questioning, and disagreement. The concept of tithing and volunteering is not mandatory. We believe in God and Jesus but how that is lived out is up to the individual. We believe God is love, loves everyone, and no one is excluded. This is a very basic overview, but I wanted to offer some clarity that not all Christians are the same. Love the podcast! I listen every week and this episode concept was super fun.
They weren’t saying that all of them are, but many do start out with those ideals. Then some sects, like Branch Davidians, get twisted by the bad people and turn into the cult.
@@damhnaitcockburn2970 Fair enough! There is such a fine line between faith communities that are healthy and beautiful and someone hungry for power to turn it into something scary, ugly, and illegal.
I really appreciate the positive perspective, I was reading so many negative comments about church. I’m Christian, and my faith is very meaningful to me, it gives me a lot of strength and peace. I think a healthy church and faith community will let you question and not judge you. That stuff the girls were saying is definitely not mandatory or always the case. And definitely should not be the case. My church is really just a super caring community of people doing their best to love each other, better themselves, and show love to our community. The sad truth is that tons of churches are super corrupt and toxic. It’s incredibly sad and not what it’s meant to be. And honestly it makes me not want to call myself a Christian because I feel like the term has become so corrupted by the right wing and Trumpism and prosperity gospel especially in the States.
It seems almost unbelievable that people could fall for something like this however, you cannot question the power of psychological manipulation. After listening to this you truly realize how fragile and susceptible humans are. Thanks for doing this episode I did find it very intriguing :)
Most of the cult start out very small and sometimes even innocent. I recently saw a documentary about Jim Jones and part of the reason he started his own church was because the church he first worked at was against integration. And he wanted everyone to be welcome at his church and he helped to integrate a lot of other places, even though he and his church got targeted for it. And he even adopted several non-white children It was only later that he started to act very weird and it became dangerous for the followers, leading up to the terrible events in Jonestown
As someone who only a few years ago left a cult, I think the information shared here is extremely important. Yes, some of it was in joking and games, but the steps that cults use to lure you in are something i think everyone should be taught. Thank you for doing this episode!
Not to get too deep but the 8 cult steps sound a lot like abusive relationships. Think, R. Kelly accusers and just recently Marilyn Manson, allegedly. Abuse and control can come in many forms. Identifying those behaviors can be helpful for some ladies who may be listening or watching. Thanks try wives! Great ep

Hey guys - I appreciate you speaking on the issues with cults and the really crazy, messed up ways they work. When you talk about tithing and the christian faith I want to clarify that *most* churches don't require you to give 10%, or anything at all really. If someone reading this is having that happen please know that the bible never tells you you *have* to give your money or time! You should never feel pressured to do something you do not want to do. Your relationship with God is not dependent on how much you give - it really depends on how much Jesus gave. I know lots of people will have opinions on this but saying it all with love. I just want to let people know if they heard the tithing comment and got confused or thought that's how all christians feel!
Thank you for saying this. A tithe is generally a church’s primary form of revenue to keep the lights on, and the mode by which they are able to do their charitable work. It is encouraged and sometimes tied to certain privileges, like reduced rates for weddings and reduced tuition the school, but it’s not a requirement of membership. But no one is being audited and banished for not meeting a quota of charitable giving. At the end of the day, it’s an expectation because the needs of the poor are remedied by the financial gifts of those who are able to give. That’s just, Christianity.
Not all christians or religions are cults. Many of the steps are also the same or similar steps people use to build relationships and groups that can be good and supportive.
THANK YOU! It really didn't sit well with me the manner in which religion was being discussed. Don't get me wrong, every religion has had problematic personalities that have engaged in atrocitous behaviour, but to just use those specific examples to generalise all of organised religion being the same, paint everyone with the same brush, is something that is very easily done and without thought. And to say that you're all-inclusive and non-judgemental, but then express your views towards religion in a very condescending manner doesn't sound very inclusive and non judgemental. If one is truly open minded, then don't dismiss part of the population that DOES follow organised religion and are perfectly rational, reasonable people. They're not the ones responsible for the despicable behaviour of those few who have given the religion a bad image. Just ask Muslims what they've gone through the last 20 years.
Religious sects are a cult until the sect was accepted as its own “religion”. Now, there are many ways the word cult is used to describe a social group like mlms, splinter religious groups, etc

I'm a freshman in college and the first semester I almost joined a Christian Cult. They love-bombed me with promises of community and becoming closer to God. They told me my heart was hard whenever I questioned anything about them or thought something felt off. They forced me into a small group and made me open up about my life and then they opened up about their lives. They praised me for everything I did or said. But at the same time, they told me I was reading the Bible wrong or doing devotionals wrong. They tried to take over all of my Faith to be the way they saw God. I kept ignoring the red flags because we are in the middle of a pandemic and I thought this was the community I needed. I'm really glad I left and I feel so much better about myself and my faith since having left them. Thank you ladies for always being so informative and kind. I greatly appreciate this podcast. I would LOVE for you girls to do an episode on your religious/spiritual journeys an how you came to whatever your higher power is now.. honestly I’m 26, didn’t grow up in a religious household so I’ve never had like any guidance with this stuff & are just now in life trying to learn to have a relationship with whatever I’d want my higher power to be. And like be able to believe an trust in that... I’m struggling hard with my anxiety and learning other people’s journeys have been interesting and helpful. No matter what you believe.
I've been binging a podcast about cults for the last week. Finally decided to take a break and listed to something light so I come to watch you guys and wouldn't you know it... I cant escape the cults 🤣😭
Things the guys always talk about: eggs, baths, & football. Things the girls love to talk about: cults, bachelor, & self care. I can’t decide which trio makes more sense?
When Ariel said @21:28 "...who finds these people?" then immediately the video went to a commercial for a famous retail outlet. I was hysterical with laughter. I'm blaming the self-quarantine that I have been in since March 2020 (am also blaming my weight gain and my bad memory for dates on quarantine because, why not). As horrible as cults are, I have to admit I enjoyed the trivia game.
Ariel’s weakness is definitely her family, and this is how Scientology traps a lot of their members. They convince you to bring your family into the cult and if you ever want to leave you’d lose your family because they’re instructed to cut you out completely.
Fun fact about the life sentences: A life sentence is actually only 15 years; being "sentenced to life" is when you spend the rest of your life in prison. It's a small distinction and very confusing but a life sentence doesn't mean a person spends the rest of their life in prison. This is why someone can get multiple life sentences plus whatever else. 🤷🏾♀️😊 2 life sentences = 30 years
My college roommate was part of the Unification Church. There was a small picture of Reverend Moon and his wife in our room and she would tell people they were her grandparents. And the whole matching thing and mass weddings was just woooaah
20:23 - Interestingly a life sentence is usually only 15-25 years! The name is totally counterintuitive - but that's why you hear people who have committed horrific crimes can get handed multiple life sentences.
@ 23:56 we have a lot of those here in Brazil. You'll get calls from inside the prison says that they have a loved and if dont transfer x amount you'll never see them again. My dad actually got a call not too long ago where they basically said we have your daughter (me) and if there's not x amount in this account you'll never see her again. AND they actually had a recording of a womans voice saying something along the lines of "daddy please help". My dad was basically like my daughter doesnt call me daddy, and hung up

remember that boy meets world episode where Shawn almost joins a cult
That was such a good episode. Cory hugging him was everything. I loved Shawn themed episodes.
Bold of you to assume that the power is higher.
I love the combination of deep and light hearted conversations on this podcast. Love you all!
Love the darker material! And it's related to today! Y'all should definitely do more in this format when you get the chance! :) Lots of love!
I've been binging a podcast about cults for the last week. Finally decided to take a break and listed to something light so I come to watch you guys and wouldn't you know it... I cant escape the cults 🤣😭
Rachel: "That is so fucked up." 😂💀
One of my favorite episodes of the pod!!! Loved this deep dive into cults, it was soo fascinating!
I loved this deep episode, I wish it was longer. I def need more of this kind of episode.
I loved this episode! It was a very engaging format and I think having other pods like it would be awesome!~
Loved the pod!!
Perfect length and interesting topic for a studie break walk!
More please!
Fun fact about the life sentences:
A life sentence is actually only 15 years; being "sentenced to life" is when you spend the rest of your life in prison. It's a small distinction and very confusing but a life sentence doesn't mean a person spends the rest of their life in prison. This is why someone can get multiple life sentences plus whatever else. 🤷🏾♀️😊
2 life sentences = 30 years
Yes! I would love more of these deep-dive episode formats :) I love how each person brings their own perspective too
What I learned: “The Bachelor” is a cult 😂
YES. this format is everything. Can y'all do more like this?!
All you ladies are looking gorg but I have to say Ariel looks so pretty and well rested for someone who has a toddler and a new born 😍
This was such a good episode, I love watching documentaries on cults. They are fascinating, how people can be lured in to following such weird ideas.
Every week I feel more and more like Becky is my spirit animal!
This was your best pod yet. Love the conversation.
when ariel was talking about the pamphlets and said you can google them, rachel typing then making that face killed me 🤣
Bean starring at the door waiting to be let out of so cute! 😍😍😍
With every episode i watch i just love Becky more and more! ♡
Lmao at the idea of the Bachelor as a cult blowing Zach’s mind so much he had to say something. Love it.
i would LOVE a “you can’t sit with us” episode where you talk about the people would never have on the podcast or just terrible people
Early Gang, where are you at???
👇🏼
Wow I love a themed podcast! Please have more of these episodes!
My college roommate was part of the Unification Church. There was a small picture of Reverend Moon and his wife in our room and she would tell people they were her grandparents. And the whole matching thing and mass weddings was just woooaah
uummm.. i'm here for Becky breaking down Cults. more pleasee!
I have the most morbid fascination with cults and lots of super dark and creepy stuff so I thoroughly enjoyed this episode
No one with a secure life is likely to join a cult. They pray on the vulnerable. Which there are far too many of in this world.
20:23 - Interestingly a life sentence is usually only 15-25 years! The name is totally counterintuitive - but that's why you hear people who have committed horrific crimes can get handed multiple life sentences.
I wonder what year this law was made. I know the life expectancy has been getting longer so that might be a reason why it is only 15-25 yrs
My dad was basically like my daughter doesnt call me daddy, and hung up
Loved this deep dive! I would totally watch a million more episodes like this.
There's a Netflix series called Explained and there's a cult episode
Love this new format and loved the topic, great episode!
