I don't understand why those boys over at Nissan kept the Pathfinder name for this thing. They could have called it Rogue XL or used another more appropriate label.
U need to switch to low gear which (L) and press traction button before u rich up hill and make sure the center button lock on 4×4. I have same car I went all over
With the Pathfinder, you should have 1) drive mode in "lock" 2) shifter in "L" 3) traction cotrol off. From what I see, I don't think you had the right settings and that is why it cut the power. Can you clarify plz?
I thought I was the only one to experience when the CVT just cuts out, *[short story]* my friend has a 2013 Nissan Rogue in the state of Georgia, we had to get over a very steep hill and we were almost to the middle and it did that exact thing what happened to Nathen, we threw it in park on the side and we had to literally turn around and go back down. (keep in mind that was a paved road)
I have a 2018 Atlas. It’s been absolutely flawlessly dependable. I like the squarer lines of the 18 better, too. I did get more aggressive tires. I would choose it over the Nissan if for nothing more than their transmissions.
Do you have the transmission sound at low speeds too? Mine has it, and it’s really irritating. I’m on 120k kms though, so doesn’t seem to impact it, but always bothers me.
You forgot to turn off the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC). That's why it stopped on the hill and wouldn't let you mash the peddle. Turn it off and the Pathfinder functions just like the Atlas (better in my opinion, I like that you can lock the diffs or isolate into 2wd).
In fairness CVT transmissions are very efficient and work well on economy cars like the Nissan Versa but it's a poor choice for luxury, performance cars as well SUV's .
I work at a shop that does an average of 12-14 Versa CVT's a year . . . the one on the Sentra seems to be more "resilient". Efficient ? Sure thing. Durable ? HELL NO.
I know you try to have non bias test on vehicles, but this one to me is a little. You run the Nissan on the mode it would be in when you start the vehicle. For the Pathfinder you can turn the traction control off and AWD lock on Then in the Atlas you put it in off-road mode, which turned the traction control off and a 50/50 power transfer. The Pathfinder do cut power to provide traction plus protect the transmission but, the Atlas is allowing all the power to be provide to the wheels almost unrestricted in off-road mode. I'd like to see the new models of these vehicles go up the hill on there preset modes and changed only when needed. For I feel the Nissan would have made stage 2 on Gold Mine Hill without needing momentum.
This is really surprising. I have 2017 Pathfinder 4wd rental and just drove down into and out of Waipio Valley in Hawaii. Also drove it up and down Mauna Kea mountain. Didn't have one issue.
I used to own a Jeep Patriot with a CVT. Not a bad vehicle, but the CVT was its worst feature. I used it for almost 5 years, right before the warranty ran out and traded it for another vehicle. The lesson was that never ever a vehicle with a CVT.
I watched a guy in a new Pathfinder on the beach... It was horrific. It did the exact same thing that it did in this video. It revved and didn't move. We had to push it while he floored it. The old Pathy was 100x better and cooler looking.
This is sad for the Pathfinder. Not only does the Atlas have more appealing lines and exterior design, the Pathfinder now is a FAR away departure from the capable versions before it like my nonstop '94 Finder. ... Great video thanks!
Great video as usual ! Very useful info, great presentation. Most of these AWD systems on SUV's (i.e. cars disguised as trucks) are close to useless in low traction situations.
I agree with most of the comments on here...the old body on frame Pathfinder is missed. But, due to large amount of new Pathfinders on the road today, Nissan is quite happy with the newest Pathfinder. Seriously, you can't drive five minutes down the road without seeing them everywhere.
KillaBandit I had an 87 2 door Pathfinder, that thing was a freak of nature. it went places it had no business being in. even with it being half eaten thanks to NY. fast forward to this one. can't even get up a decent hill, without quitting.
... Agree...had an 04 r50 se 4wd and it was bullet proof...the only thing it really couldn't do was pass a gas station; got rid of it after 13 yrs of flawless service bcuz we were finally fed up w/ 14-19mpg...some days I miss it; others I don't
A lot of people look to these types of vehicles for over-sand beach duty not necessarily rock crawling. It would be way more useful to see how they do in sand and beach environments.
All the comment section is excuses for Nissan, Cvt's fault, bla bla bla, the reality is all Japanese and Korean cars have the worst AWDs ever, most of them fail at Diagonal test (Except Subaru), if you want good performance on snow, off road and you wanna be safe, buy BMW,Mercedes,Audi,Volkswagen, they have incredible traction, we live in a very steep hill, every year when it snows we see dozens of CRV,Rav4, X-trail and more stuck and spinning around, they endanger themselves and others.
Intrepid Milotic You are silly lol. Kia has a decent AWD system and passes the diagonal test easily, Honda has a great AWD system. Subaru and Mitsubishi also has great AWD capable vehicles. People seem to forget a AWD system isn’t really designed for off-roading. You want to off-road buy a freaking 4X4, not a crossover with a AWD system.
uscfroadie Hey don't knock the wagon. Pretty sure my A6 avant could do better than this pathfinder garbage. Nissan seems hellbent on neutering their brand which is sad as a Nissan fan.
I'm curious to see how the new Subaru Ascent next year will do against Pilot/Pathfinder/Atlas. Subaru's AWD system is great but they're so stubborn about using a CVT.
Nissan should rename that station wagon. It's an embarrassment to the pathfinder name. +++ I just watched the 2017 Honda Ridgeline video and the Honda walked right up all 3 stages. Sad.
I wish they just stretched the ORIGINAL Touareg platform to have the cargo/passenger dimensions that the Atlas has but with the off-road chops of the touareg (years 2004-2010 anyway)
Wonder if 17 inch wheels would clear the discs on the Atlas. It'd be fun to see what kind of trouble you could get into (and out of) with a huge family hauler running on some meatier A/T tires. Seems like you might be able to tuck some 31s under there. I'd try it just for kicks.
I really wanted to like the Pathfinder, I drove a nissan pickup for 15 years and loved it. I test drove the Pathfinder several times but the cvt is just awful, it just grunts and groans, even on the 2017. The interior is kind of low class too, they put in a lot of fake wood/metal that just looks tacky, either do real stuff or just skip it and put in some high grade plastic. I finally bought the Highlander, mostly because I keep my vehicles for a while and I wanted the predicted reliability and the 2017 update with the updated engine and transmission made the Highlander very easy to drive. The one plus for the pathfinder is you can get the platinum for less than $40k, during sales events, while the other non-luxury manufactures top models are going to be in the mid to upper $40's, unless it a Durango, then fully loaded is going to be in the upper $50's.
Why did Nissan not just FULLY kill the Pathfinder, name and all ? Putting that name ,on that P.O.S. , is an absolute disgrace. More accurate name for that thing would have been """ PARKINGLOTFINDER "", good lord.
Well that was pretty decisive if not again for the difference in the tires. I'd still like to see you guys do a mashup comparing different tires on the same vehicle. At least the difference wouldn't be $5000 like it was here. Bob/Okc
I always love the irony of watching videos on the current "Pathfinder" and "Explorer" models. Just shadows of what they used to be after the evangelical environmentalist put the pressure on these automakers which then preceded to gut everything good about them. In place of solid body on frame construction, the now "hot" crossovers (ex. suv) have all the utilities a soccer mom needs when traversing the treacherous terrain of a metropolitan center on the east or west coast.
Well said, but it's sad that many vehicles will probably never be built like they once were. The majority of new car purchases now a days are made by (or largely influenced by) women, so the companies target them.
Yea Audi vw has always had one of the best awd systems out the my mom just picked up a q7 instead of the atlas she couldn't get the atlas in the color she wanted and they just released the 3.0 l diesels for sell so she picked up a 15 diesel
Question (if you know the answer) - in your comparison to,the Chevy Traverse, you did the rear hatch ‘race’, and the Atlas didn’t close using the remote (As I expected), however, in this video - Atlas vs Pathfinder, you did the same rear hatch race and it appears the Atlas’ rear hatch closed using the remote...is that so? Please tell.
CVT overheated, ECU limits throttle when that happens. Nissan discontinued the real pathfinder in 2012. Then they stretched out a Murano and hijacked the Pathfinder name for it.
What if he have locked the 4x4 on the nissan pathfinder?? Did he just used the auto mode? The VW was on off road mode selected. If he did so thats not a fair test.
Most people who buy these CUVs (including the Pathfinder), will never take these off-roading. That's why they got 20 inch rims and street tires on them. Style over off-road function.
Can you please make any videos on cvt transmissions and what owners of 2013-14 Nissan and Infiniti j35 and qx60 are going through? Even though there are owners of newest generations are complaining of juddering issues and list of power..
i like my real Nissan pathfinder 1995 with mechanical locker rear and a true manual transmission this current generation is not a Nissan pathfinder but a Renault fieldfinder like shoot im sure my other commuter car would do about the same on gravel roads as these vehicles in this video.
I was seriously considering getting a Nissan Rogue awd or Pathfinder but I dont think I am now because I'm not liking what I've been seeing the transmission not do to well when they get pushed a little
The CVT had to take the harder far left angle. The VW took the far right angle. So far, every car you tested on the far right has made it with very little trouble.
I would be very interested to see a Subaru with a CVT try to get up this stage III. However, Subaru will not send cars to you guys. I'm interested because I think the same thing would happen and that is why they don't want to send it to you. Just look at the Subaru outback test that you did a few years back. The gas pedal was to the floor and it was just sitting there.
It does not matter how much HP/TQ you have, if you can't send it to the wheels! If I put my foot down, I expect them all to turn. I don't want any computer thinking about it - just lock all the wheels together for goodness sake (or at least have LSDs on each end). I won't buy a CVT transmission for this reason, so for my wife who likes the Outback XT and won't drive a manual, there is no upgrade. I'll just upgrade this platform as it needs maintenance instead.
Atlas > Mallfinder. I wasn't a fan of the VW when it first came out (I still prefer the Touareg) but after seeing one up close I'm appreciating it more. I still wish it has a newer engine & obviously a TDI variant, but alas neither will ever happen.
I remember when Nissan Pathfinder was off road worthy. Heck they used to have an off road edition. If they don’t bring back the Xterra then Nissan better step up its game and return its Pathfinder to its off road roots.
Seems every manufacturer is gutting the heck out of their old "Off-road" models. While the old Pathfinder wasn't that great offroad to begin with this new one has nothing in common with it other than name.
Although VW went through dieselgate I still love the way they look feel and drive. Plus the Atlas is so hot right now.
I don't understand why those boys over at Nissan kept the Pathfinder name for this thing. They could have called it Rogue XL or used another more appropriate label.
Van Hammer It would be interesting to see how much money per vehicle in production costs Nissan saved by going to a FWD unibody platform (Maxima)
True that, they shouldve made it a whole new crossover, and kept the truck based Pathfinder.
Pathfinder is an appropriate name, as the car could likely find the path you want to drive on, just not necessarily drive on it.
more like 'Crapfinder', i think :-)
The Murano should've become their 2/3 row crossover and kept the Pathfinder as their 4Runner competitor :S
That thing ain't a Pathfinder. It's a Mallfinder.
Jack Stephen lololololol
Hahaha
More like a Shitfinder.
had a Good laugh! thx
Wah ? Wah? Wah happened to the Pathfinder?. It's balls dropped off.
Damn, Pathfinder used to be a REAL PATH FINDER, finding paths where there weren't any. Now it's just on-road a tad bit lifted shit.
I'd still rather have a Touareg.
I totally agree with you.
I hate CVT transmissions. They do not belong on any AWD vehicle. This video proves why I say that.
don't put em all in one basket.. Nisan Pathfinder is a bloated CUV. I think if u look at what Subaru's hae done w/ their CVTs it speaks for itself.
Adam Willing so sad they are robbing people cvt is why I didnt go for the infinity suv
Honestly, Subaru makes better CVTs than Nissan.
Looks as if Nissan has been listening. The new 2022 Pathfinder ditched the CVT in favor of the ZF 9-speed.
I remember when the pathfinder was a real offroader
Nicolas Bozzo Totally! I’ve got a 1999.5 gen 2 Pathy. Great on and off the road!
You can remember... and let us enjoy with the new CVT pathfinder.. 😎
👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
Before 2013, if you say the pathfinder VS 4Runner.
Yep, no questions.
But nowadays, the current model VS 4Runner.
Wait! Are you kidding me = =?
When would that be?
this the only channel that test the cars in real world situations.. i always check their channel before i buy a new car.. thanks guys! keep it up!
Dear manufacturers: don't put CVTs on SUVs.
1970HondaCL100 CVT's belong in gutless, i4 fuel misers.
1970HondaCL100 i just want to punch a cvt,"IN THE FACEEEE!!!!!!
I would rather say: Dear manufacturers: don't put CVTs in ANY cars.
1970HondaCL100 Don't put CVTs in anything.
1970HondaCL100 death to all cvt
CVTs are killing Nissan products esp what used to be a super capable off roader
Chris Dooley They're selling pretty well and most cars are going that route it seems.
keri ellerbe selling well at rental car companies... saw like 15 of em at my local airport just lined up
My last 3 rentals have been Nissan's
Does this have a low gear box
It's not really a Pathfinder anymore they made it a Mallfinder.
Good job Atlas!! Thanks for sharing.
I thought I was the only one to experience when the CVT just cuts out,

Biggie-TubaMan97 did you even find out why it did that?
Remember when pathfinders were cool SUV's? RIP
b22chris neither do I...
Indeed... The Pathfinder used to be an icon. On par with the Toyota 4runner! Now, it's a mini van, with 4 doors... Disgraceful...
I have a R50 Pathfinder
I'm reminded of it everyday to and from work (95 M/T)

I'm getting the Atlas SEL Premium and this video was excellent! The laugh at 9:16 had me dying 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I'm a long-term fan of body on frame trucks - but that Atlas intrigues me (as a father of 4, who wants to take the whole family along)

love my CVT in my Nissan Altima...on demand power and great fuel economy...I wouldn't want one in SUV though
I always enjoy these two together for a review.
What's sad about the Atlas is the vehicle it's replacing, the touareg would have handeled this course no problem. That was a real luxury Off road suv
Atlas is one of best crossovers on whole us market
1:29 - the trail is a lot steeper than what the camera shows. So true. Pictures never do justice.
Great work.. thanks for the review... I loved the Tiguan but now I'm thinking Atlas
Glad I saw this I'm taking our new Atlas up Gold mine hill this weekend.

Thanks for review! One more confirmation that cars with CVTs should be avoided.
Love Nathan's reaction when it finally goes up the final bump lolll
Volkswagen should make a gold mine hill edition
Great video as usual ! Very useful info, great presentation.
Most of these AWD systems on SUV's (i.e. cars disguised as trucks) are close to useless in low traction situations.

Sad to see this. My 2003 pathfinder le could go anywhere I put it. One of the last body on frame styles. The newer ones are junk for off road.
KillaBandit I had an 87 2 door Pathfinder, that thing was a freak of nature. it went places it had no business being in. even with it being half eaten thanks to NY. fast forward to this one. can't even get up a decent hill, without quitting.
William Singer yep, sad to see they are going backwards. I'm hoping to pick up a new 4runner next year before they decide to ditch it too.
2003 was unibody, but it was very capable off road. The 2005-2012 went back to body on frame and they are also pretty good off road.
Asher Rios oh crud. Thought it was body on frame. It drove like it. Oh well.

I really like the Atlas more than the Pathfinder. Looks, and performance. Id just with it had a little better fuel economy.
My 03 pathfinder still running strong💪🏽 last of the good pathfinder.

The back of the Atlas reminds me of a Grand Wagoneer in a way.

Very nice video. What camera you guys were using?
Atlas > Mallfinder. I wasn't a fan of the VW when it first came out (I still prefer the Touareg) but after seeing one up close I'm appreciating it more. I still wish it has a newer engine & obviously a TDI variant, but alas neither will ever happen.
Is there any way you can run the Atlas through a more complex course with mud. Im looking at it but want to know how capable these really are.
There’s a diff lock also on pathfinder. Doesn’t look like they used that
Nissan only offers two 4x4's in the USA now, Patrol and Frontier, the others are crossover cars.
I remember when Nissan Pathfinder was off road worthy. Heck they used to have an off road edition. If they don’t bring back the Xterra then Nissan better step up its game and return its Pathfinder to its off road roots.
Back in the old days, the wheels actually turned when you floored it.
Seems every manufacturer is gutting the heck out of their old "Off-road" models. While the old Pathfinder wasn't that great offroad to begin with this new one has nothing in common with it other than name.
