Pentatonix did the first arrangement with Dolly doing all of the verses. But, when Dolly saw that, she insisted that they take at least one of the verses for themselves to shine! She is an amazingly generous person.
It was generosity, but it also allowed her to switch up her part and basically create a new part of the song that never existed before--that response section she does behind their harmony. So she managed to be generous, but create something new and juicy for herself simultaneously.
And this is their only Grammy (so far!) for a performance - the others were for the arrangements, so Ben Bram was included in those as well. I don't think Ben got one for this song.
And I seem to remember that, unbelievably, it was Dolly’s first for singing this song, even though she wrote it. My apologies if I’ve gotten any of that wrong, but I’m sure someone will either corroborate or correct this if I did misspeak.
@@jeancaldwell5391 You are correct, and it was her third nomination for it (she had nominations for the original recording and a later live performance, but this time she won the well-deserved and overdue Grammy).
I was thinking that this song was 50 years old. Dolly is amazing. I love this arrangement! I can't believe that I have never heard it before today! So glad Jen's Patreon members voted for it! Great reaction, as always!
Can you believe Dolly never won a Grammy for this iconic song until she recorded this with PTX. Thank goodness she finally got her well deserved Grammy, as well as PTX. She is such a class act, such a truly amazing human. PTX were great as always but for me it was the Dolly Show.💐💐💐💐💐💐💐 for all. Don't forget to grab your bouquet also Jen. 😁
What I love is that she was grammy nominated for this song twice in the 70's but didn't finally win one for Jolene until she collabed with ptx. They helped her win one and she helped them win another.
I was worried you were going to hurt yourself trying to mimic Avi. I think this is the only time I've seen Kirstie perform with someone shorter than she is. Her and Dolly are 2 dynamic singers that pack a punch. Amazingly, it took this collab with PTX for Dolly to get her first Grammy for Jolene.
I grew up listing to OLDE 'Classic Country' (Child of the 60's, and what Momma/Papa wanted to listen to on the radio, we ALL listened to on the radio!). Seeing Classic Songs and the Artists who sang them, adapting to and then (Dare I say it? I Dare!), *IMPROVING* the original? This Group, is just that damned *OUTSTANDING,* and Dolly will forever be *AWESOME!* Nice to see folks seeing this for the first time! It always makes me smile, my toe(s) tapping-along with the melody. Thank you for taking us along for the ride!
This was posted to Pentatonix's TH-cam channel on September 16, 2016. I don't know the date when they recorded it but I suspect that they posted it as soon as possible since they were so excited about it. They absolutely LOVED working with Dolly Parton.
I love the way Pentatonix adds such a fuller feeling to the song. The harmonies are extra ordinary and Kevin is spot on too. Dolly Parton and Reba McIntire have the most distinct voices in Country Music. Love the fact that Dolly gave them their own verse to shine on. Another fun reaction Jen. Thank you
Dolly parton is one of those rare people in the entertainment industry that more people love her as a person than her music which is almost unheard of today. Typically fans will forgive/ignore a celeb's actions or personality flaws because they love their music/movies/clothing design/athleticism/etc so much. But even people who hate country music know who Dolly is and think she's sweet and adorable. She transcends her music. We need more people like her ❤.
Thanks again Jennifer. Love Pentatonix and really enjoying this week of PTX reactions from you. Dolly Parton + PTX - how could this be anything else but a great song - of course this got a Grammy!
I'm not a huge Pentatonix fan, but I've been completely obsessed with this collab with Dolly. It's full, yet somehow stripped down. Delightful. Dolly sounds absolutely wonderful. I read she was everything you've ever heard for this session-- walking in full glam early ready to record and, oh, so generous with the other performers. What a legend! I always thought it was insane that "Jolene" was up for a Grammy twice in '75 and '76 but never won. "Jolene" and Dolly were long overdue for a Grammy and I'm so glad it won in 2017!
Have you listened to PTX's Amazing Grace? When Kirstin starts her lead verse in that, she uses a delicate tone that may remind you of Dolly here ... she then starts belting, very much Broadway Kirstin, but it was an interesting choice for her opening lines. Re Kevin's stamina - if you ever get a chance to see them live, he is a total machine. And he works out devotedly to make sure he's in shape for his art: lifts appallingly huge barbells and such.
Hi Jen, I'm enjoying your PTX reactions. I typically watch just PTX as I'm hearing impaired/deaf and PTX has the unique ability to annunciate with lips that match. I can listen to a PTX song up to 50 times before I'm able to match the closed captioning, lips, facial expression and vibrations before the entire song comes together for me. I look for reactors that understand music and offer in depth reactions. Before I lost my hearing, I was a violest and have the low range of Scott, through his upper, but can't close to his falsetto! 😂😂 I miss being a part of the musical world, but PTX and reactors like you help bring that back into my life. Instrumental music is impossible to dissect, and even other a Cappella groups can be a challenge with multi tracking, twang or poor annunciation. Just wanted you to know you're making a difference! Thank you
Jennifer! Oh I've heard this one. Dolly fits in so well with Pentatonix. Watches! What are you gonna do? Sounds like you're gonna go shopping! 😂 This just seems like a bunch of friends singing together. No fancy backgrounds, lighting, etc. Just simple and straightforward. Love the twinkle in Dolly's eye when she looks to the right and smiles! Great collab between Dolly and Pentatonix! And great reaction and analysis by you as always Jen!
You and your LOW notes!! LOL !! Very endearing! Loved this song AND your reaction to it! I hadn't heard this in a long time... nice refresher! As always, your analysis provided insights I had never noticed, and really appreciate!
The first nomination was for the original recording, and the second was for a live recording from the TV series In Concert. It did not win either time, but in 2017, a cover by the a cappella group Pentatonix which featured Parton as a guest singer won the Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
Jen, please, please, please react to Chapel Hart's "answer" to Jolene, an original song called "You Can Have Him, Jolene" -- so fun! Chapel Hart are three African-American women; when they sang on AGT, they said something like "country singers don't look like us" so sad, bc they are really good. and the song is a kick.
Avi will be headed to Europe in Sept. You should look up his European Tour schedule and go. Here is one of his two newest songs. Avi Kaplan (Kaplan) Healing th-cam.com/video/mpPUgoksg9w/w-d-xo.html
So I have this fantasy where the Galactic Civilization visits Earth and wants to take 100 humans to evaluate the worth of our species to join them. And two of the people I would nominate are in this video...Dolly and KO.
You really should react to Home Free and Don Mclean doing the 50th anniversary re-release of American Pie. Mclean says he partnered with Home Free on it because quote, "they *get* harmonies." He basically gave each member a verse except for Adam Rupp who beatboxes _non stop for the _*_entire_*_ 8 minute song_ without a break. (apparently he almost passed out)
It appears that it is time for you to clock out, watch out when getting in your car, and don't waste a second driving to the store to get your timepiece. Then you could get on an airplane and watch time fly! But enough of this silliness. The PTX/Miley Cyrus collaboration on the Jolene performance was on the special broadcast honoring Dolly Parton. Keep up the great reviewing and we'll keep rewarding.
This song was released in 1973, as a result of a local bank teller trying to "take care" of her husband while Dolly was on tour. You can watch the interview where she talked about it here: th-cam.com/video/ffo9b6HgaBw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=c4IFEjs0GX-G52QJ
Since you're a vocal coach and like complex close harmonies I'm a little surprised you haven't checked out Jacob Collier. Moon River is just him but All Night Long is him with Take 6 while playing several of the 20 instruments he plays. He leads random fans to improvise on Mahogany Sessions Little Blue. He covers all kinds of genres, does many collaborations and just won his 6th Grammy with saje, another group with tight harmonies. Moon River: th-cam.com/video/VPLCk-FTVvw/w-d-xo.html
One of my favorite versions of this song! Also thankful for this song or I would have been named Josephine lol. Nothing against that name but its not for me.
She recorded with Pentatonix? She was SUPPOSED to play the Superbowl, ask Home Free to back her up on "9 to 5", let them do the beatbox breakdown in the middle, and then...I mean no pressure, Tim, but I looked it up and no one has actually blown out the amplifiers during a halftime show...just saying. But, okay, fine. This ain't bad.
Pentatonix did the first arrangement with Dolly doing all of the verses. But, when Dolly saw that, she insisted that they take at least one of the verses for themselves to shine! She is an amazingly generous person.

I do love that story! 😊
Pentatonix won their second grammy for this collaboration.
Third Grammy. Daft Punk and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy were earlier
And this is their only Grammy (so far!) for a performance - the others were for the arrangements, so Ben Bram was included in those as well. I don't think Ben got one for this song.

1973 was the year of original release by Dolly and it was one of her first hit records post her Porter Wagner days. She is a national treasure.
I was thinking that this song was 50 years old. Dolly is amazing. I love this arrangement! I can't believe that I have never heard it before today! So glad Jen's Patreon members voted for it! Great reaction, as always!

Best backup singers ever. Every time they collaborate they let the guest shine.

This is still one of the best collaborations of all time.

Dolly is a legend! Thanks Jen 😊
This performance won them their 3rd Grammy. Jolene was first released in October 1973 (I was 13 😱.
None of Pentatonix were even born!
@@thechomiji lol, indeed they weren’t. My “baby” was born 1991 and is just one month younger than Scott.

Yes, over on my channel😁
Kirstie channels Dolly's voice a bit in PTX's cover of Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone.
Imagine having Dolly Parton singing backing vocals for you!
@Badger77722 Thanks so much for sharing that. I had never heard that.

So many pauses
Condense the words. Rehearse.
Avi made the band with his bass, they lost a lot when he left.
But they gained so much with Matt. His latest solos are breathtaking!
Your patrons really picked this song? There are a ton of songs that are better then this. Not a big Dolly fan.
I prefer much much more JOLENE version by Maneskin ft Dolly Parton
Too bad that collaboration didn’t win her a Grammy🧐
