You can say what you want about Festool but the Domino is a huge time and pain saver. If you can do your joinery using the integrated indexing pins on the machine you don't even need to eyeball , measure or mark anything, and you get perfect matching joins every single time. A really great machine.
I agree. Festool have “invented” some very good machines. My issue with them is that the cost. The domino has been around for a long time with few, if any, innovations. So all the R&D costs were recovered years ago - and yet the cost goes up and up. I understand the marketing philosophy (keep this an aspirational brand) and the accountants view (charge as much as we get away with) but, eventually, the market will turn against such brands.
I make my internal doors pretty much as shown in this video. The differences would be that I either use a multiple number of standard dominoes in a joint (to get maximum glue area) or I use mega dominos (shop made tenons that fit a mortise made by using the domino to cut side by side). I’ve not had one door fail through racking using the domino. In fa act, I don’t think I’ve had a joint in anything I’ve made using a domino fail at the joint.
I mean I don't think anybody disagrees that they're useful tools like the only negative thing people ever have to say about them is the price per value. Personally I just don't see it for any tool that I don't use regularly even as a contractor
Don't give me wrong if I was a trim guy I was 100% have a domino and use it a lot. But as someone that just does trim occasionally or as a homeowner in my opinion they just don't make sense for the usefulness per dollar
@@stich1960 I would agree that they are (now) over priced. When we ran as a business making bespoke furniture, we clocked making cabinet doors for a book case. First with M&T and then with dominos. Dominos were much quicker and we worked out payback would be months, not years. Hardly a rigorous scientific time and motion study but good enough for us. At one point, we had 3 domino machines and I think we ended up using them on virtually every piece of furniture. I’ve heard arguments about long term strength of M&T versus dominos but, in my mind, it’s down to the amount of surface area and the correct use of the appropriate glue.

Great project. Like I mentioned to you before when you first introduced the Festool Domino on your channel, I cannot put two pieces of wood together for love or money. Till I bought both the 500 and the 700. I use the 500 for picture frames, boxes, drawers, cabinets etc. I just built a new 48" x 66 1/2" wood gate using the XL-10mm x 100mm for the 2"x4" frame. Man! It's solid-no screws. The more you use it and the more you become comfortable with it, the more the price will make sense. Take care, love your channel.
Love working with white oak. Such a solid and forgiving wood. One of my first ever milled project was out of Cedar, and it was the most disastrously fun/rewarding work iv ever done
Interesting, as a journeyman carpenter/ fine woodworker I stick to traditional mortise and tenon jointly. Yes it takes a little longer and I have to change a bit more. Thirty years experience as I can’t keep up with the work. Making forty custom interior doors out of mahogany for a custom home in Scottsdale Arizona this week. Great video, more than one way to skin a cat 👍

Great work mate you should be proud, you put a lot of pride into your work and it shows. I love watching this type of carpentry even though I could never do this myself. I'm a handyman that can build a wall, that type of carpentry. I can tell that when you do jobs in other peoples houses you are not a cowboy and you work with such a high level of skill, so keep up the great work.
FYI, bidding and prepping for a main entrance hallway accent wall board/batten install. All inspired by studying your videos and coming up with my own design. Customer is brave enough to dish pre-chosen insta patterns and go with my unique one. It wont be easy since surface is not square or rectangular but rather all over the place with various angles as a border (steps and roof). Oh … almost forgot, it at 20’ high and 16’ wide. Thanks for sharing all of the experience! it is nice to see you advancing in your trade and life (new house, shop, domino-LOL etc). All the best Rich.

14:03 It’s great that your skills are growing as is your business and trying new things, buying new tools/equipment to help you out and be able to “do the things” dreamed of doing👍🏻 Pretty awesome that things do come true when put in the work and go after it, even if afraid at times if “take chances” etc…..doing projects might not necessarily “one before” but just knowing skill level and believing can do it.
Like you’re working w/ Brent and that’s just SO AWESOME that you were able to work on those projects while back and how amazing they turned out Rich. Congrats again and congrats on what have accomplished and are able to do now. I remember one of your vids long ago in your house when trying out a new “technique” doing stairs and said if failed, oh well, ya do again, or just leave for now, “as you test in your own house, not others”. Granted I’ve heard before; but you’d be 1st person that I actually saw doing just that in their own house and filming it for everyone to see; that’s awesome 👏🏻

Wonderful project! You are a master builder. Thank you so much for sharing all the content over the years. I totally agree on the tool platform front. I started out back in the 80s with a 9.6v Makita cordless drill/driver. Since then, I went on to use a plethora of power tools from Elu to Bosch. Only when the cordless tools came of age did I opt for a particular platform, namely Hitachi. I chose that platform on price/performance.
Many years down the line, I own a rather random collection of power tools, and even more so in the cordless range. Pretty much every brand - except the one named after the beer, and they all seem to do what I want. I've yet to go for the Domino - I find dowels do the same for me, but one of these days I just might take the plunge.

Love your work and have learned a lot from you over the years. I use the domino a good bit, both the 500 and 700. I have learned to lay out the glue on a piece of card board and roll the domino in the glue. No need to put glue in the hole just roll them and drive the in when doing doors. Never had a failure.

To save yourself some stress on your glue ups try pre gluing your domino's. I found that to be very helpful. Great job on the door brother!

Fabulous work! Hey, I have an arts & crafts door on the front of my house that is original to the 1920's. It has beveled glass in it. So beautiful, it makes such a difference. Several of my original windows have that beveled glass & design. You might like that look for glass. 😃

Just a suggestion, whenever I am driving screws in hardwood, I rub the screws across and old candle.
The wax make driving the screws in hardwood much easier.

That's great way to build doors. I build them the same way, with domino's. Faster then traditional tenon and mortis.
I haven't made a door like that before but have made many interior and exterior doors before as well as a few wood windows and a few inset cabinet doors. If you look at the cabinet doors that a TH-cam channel called Odd Life Crafting has on there boat, that's what I'd like to do on some of the doors in my house that I'm building from the ground up. It's a geodesic dome home and I'll be building a timber frame pretty soon. You should get a Porter-Cable 126 door plane and all the jigs to process doors. It makes your life much easier.

I’d love to see how you are going to make the jams and how you’re going to align the hinges with the door and the Jam. Maybe a jig?
Mike Farrington has a video on making double doors which includes a hinge jig that has the jam and door sides on one jig. I followed his design on double doors I made and hung using 4 hinges per door and it worked great.

Love the door! White oak is nice an solid for sure. I want to make the ones for our house. Nothing as fancy as what you have done. We do have a solid 3 panel entry door that is Checking at the bottom. Would love to know how you would tackle that.

When you cut the bevels on the stiles, what will be your technique? I love using a track saw set to 3°
hey Richard and fellow carpenters: you may not need to pound in the dowels (screw plugs) to the head of the screws. Snug is okay but tight is good.

Door looks great! I like your screw idea for the bars. I am going to try that on my casement window project. Any concerns with not using a stainless steel screw to avoid rust?
I took this wood connection for me also, I will drill normal 20mm holes, use 2 pins 📌, 📌 or more if need.
I will to do like Banch- wood doga with opening sit long 1.6m x 0.6m. high- 1m.
