LOVE your music, Daniel!! Thank you for "taking back" "old school country music". I think the title "mosey" is JUST FINE! Let's hope modern pop country doesn't "hijack" THIS genre! ;) The great country legends have / are passing away and you are keeping true to the roots of what they stood for, with your OWN fabulous style! Love ya!

I met Daniel in Chicago last year. I mentioned to him he was my favourite Country singer. He says to me I'm not a Country singer. He explains he thinks corporate money has purchased the name country and replaced the sound with "New kids on the block with fiddles". He said if I was a billionaire I would buy it back. Instead im going to rename it and show the folks the good stuff. .... I like this guy!

Thought the Mosey thing sounded kind of silly...until I read this. Thx

the airy room contrasts with the earthy intimacy of daniel's music, amplifying the interviewer's voice while daniel's even-toned & ever self-contained. why would anyone 'equate' his & warhol's work? and why does daniel somewhat agree? his work is much more than entertainment. he listened to old country as a child with his parents, but here says he doesn't necessarily draw from personal experience, rather has an understanding of humankind. like he says, it's not an act, & in his drawing focus from confusion, he is a focal point of truth. he exudes realness. humble to a fault.
    thank you for sharing this

I have much difficulty comprehending the tone of this interview.

Same. At some points I'm like "hmm, very eloquently stated" & at others I'm like "...is this a comedy sketch?"

Really interesting interview, Romano is a well spoken guy. It was cool to see how thoughtful he was in his responses

Why. Is. The. Interviewer. So. Stilted. He. Makes. Me. Feel. Anxious.
What doesn't make me anxious is that ridiculously cool getup Daniel Romano is sporting. What a legend.

It's kind of an awkward conversation, but I do agree that using "roots revival" isn't a good representation of his music. The music from a songwriting and production standpoint has always had one foot in the present and one in the past.

"That comes with a cost and that is confusion."
I think it's safe to say confusion is part of the price of admission to getting into Daniel Romano's output. If you are as annoyed by the tone of this interview (as it seems like so many commenters are) it's worth keeping that in mind. He values the authenticity of his expression over your comfort with how he goes about it. Yeah they are flirting with irony all over the place here (which is legit annoying) but Dan can't hide how much he's thought about some of these topics. Honesty is embarrassing as is the whole notion of discussing art for public consumption. They did their best to make the process entertaining.

I love his latest album, but what the fuck..comparing yourself to probably the smartest man that ever lived (Leonardo Da Vinci) is hilarious. What exactly has been invented here? Mosey? Because it sounds exactly like this kind of music I like called Country Western. I'd say the andy warhol comment was spot on, except andy didnt change the label on the can of soup to something else.

Almost as insane as when Kanye West said the same thing... I almost think this is kind of tongue in cheek maybe??? But yeah, agreed...

getting way to serious with this conversation...we are talking music people ! he writes, play and looks in a retro style which makes him appealing..nothing new here..Can you imagine Hank Williams getting this serious in an interview..Hank would have just said I write ,sing and play from my heart based in my country
roots..i get flashy for show and drink when i get off the stage NOT on camera to prove something...I liked this guy before i saw this pretentious interview.

Where's that country accent that he sings with? Oh, it's appropriated.

    • @hamnchee

All singers change their voice to sing. A note itself is an appropriation. No one talks in C major, for instance. It's a controlled creation. Like a German singing an Italian opera.
