I was a dog trainer at a pet store. We were only allowed to teach positive reinforcement. It took so long. And so many people had a hard time with that, eventually I quit because I felt like it was my fault. I recently got a dog and your videos are helping me learn it wasn’t me, it was the method. Thank you!!
Pet smart right
As someone who left a regional position for a cooperate company like that- their training is garbage. They shouldn't have training to be honest and especially therapy dog or any akc involvement. They scam people left and right when they don't even have real training or provide any real training. A few computer sessions and some easy textbook work doesn't make a trainer. Their positive-only advice is god awful. Which is why I never did it. In my room we trained each individual dog with the tool that worked for that dog. Period. Cooperate never bit at me because I was making them so much money they could finally add a vet clinic in the store. However, a new owner destroyed what I had going so I quit. Now to this day that store fell apart. They have no trainer. No clinic and lost their adoption section.
Balanced Training is the only way
+ only training is like never telling your child no. No rules, boundaries, guidelines makes for total chaos.
@@h7kers321what on earth does this have to do with training dogs. Dogs aren't allowed in heaven so why would anyone want to go there anyway.
Thank you for speaking out soooo many dogs are in shelters because of this only positive nonsense. I actually took one of those stupid class with my Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy. I worked hard at home using mild correct and rewarding, she was awesome. I did feel bad in class which I ended up using for socializing. The instructor kept pointing out how great she was BUT I wasn't training how they instructed.
I love how he touched on desensitization. Dog owners are like parents. Some parents say “oh I don’t want to expose my kid to anything that could be possibly stressful because it’s bad for him” but then the kid grows up unable to cope with any little variable. It’s better for a dog to get used to the outside world, and for you to expose it to those factors in a controlled setting where you pick the intensity rather than stressing your dog even more because it’s never had that kind of interaction before. Basically if you don’t desensitize your dog, it’s gonna live a way more stressed life overall.
These longer videos showing the entire process are amazing!! Super thorough and helpful thank you.
Agree, thats why i only watch his videos!
The fact that your techniques work so well has made my relationship with my dog so much better. Our walks have gone from a power struggle to sheer fun. Thanks!
It's 2am and I don't own a dog but your content is quite captivating.
OMG! I always wondered why you touched your face before rewarding! “Paying from the eyes” makes so much sense. You’re spot on about my previous dog watched my waist for payments. Thanks for explaining!
When I’m training a puppy or adolescent, I like to randomly reward on a walk or a hike when he checks in with me and looks into my eyes. I also move a treat from my face all the out to a fully extended arm and then wave it around and reward if he doesn’t look at the trust, but rather keeps looking at my eyes. It doesn’t seem to make a difference in high distraction places, such as a festival, but everything else he’s always checking in and seems latently listening for a command.
Your videos have changed my entire relationship with my dog. In an amazing way. I tried three classes of positive reinforcement training and my high drive dog couldn’t have cared less. Getting an e collar and your videos have made my dog and I so much closer. Thank you so much.
13:50 B I N G O ‼️
If you get your dog to be OK with ANYONE in any situation, you won’t have to worry about your dog with ANYONE in any situation.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽‼️👍🏽‼️
My godfather gave me a American blue nose pitbull at first I was nervous about keeping him could train him I was told that it would cost a lot to train him being single and working 2 job I was thinking I was going to have to serender him or give him back. However in watching your videos I have been able to teach him the basics sit stay; at 5 months he still needs a lot more training but he is getting there. He is not only my service dog he is like the child I never had. After this viedo I feel he will be able to accompany me to restaurants that allow him to come in. Thank you for explaning what you are doing and why you are doing it. You and you team will always be in my prayers. Again thank you so much for what y'll do for every pet parent out there.
Girl I can relate it's my story...I was given my beautiful Nayla!!
Must mention it’s very good to bug dogs when they are eating. I was “almost” bit in the face by my friends dog when young ( good thing I had quick reflexes, just a nip on my chin) so every dog I have ever owned, I make sure to bother them as so they are NOT aggressive while eating. I’m totally with you 👍👍
Excellent videos, thanks you! 😊❤
I totally agree regarding touch while eating. It builds trust that “I’m the giver of food and affection”, not to be feared. If I don’t train this way then the likelihood of food aggression increases. Thank You 😊
I prefer this length of depth of video. The short ones aren't nearly as informative and reinforcing. Thank you! Keep em coming!
I love you closing statement, "pitbulls get such a bad rap it's silly". I CBG agree with you more. Amazing video btw. You earned yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the good work bud!!
its not the breed of the dog, its the breed of the owner
That’s such an over used statement… it’s annoying, people stare at pitbulls and assume their “bad” when they want to assume. Easy statement is to judge the owner that you also know nothing about. It’s an easy way to constantly judge dogs and owner’s
Pure 💎! I am an experience dog owner. I have 2 Turkish Kangal, 2 Presa Canario and 1 Rottwieler and I wanna say that, Only on your videos there is not even a single time I skip honestly. Love watching your content and every single time I have learn something new from you!
Love and respect ✊🏼
♥️ 🇨🇦
I always have "bothered" my dog while he was eating when he was a puppy to prevent food aggression. Now he knows that when food is taken from him, he will always get something in return for ignoring it.
(This is how a trainer told me to do it idk if it's necessarily the "right" way but it worked for my small dog.)
Positive reinforcement only training will always fall short. You have to use some form of correction in dog training. Also I’m a big believer in teaching a dog to tolerate kids or anyone else while eating. I do it by feeding my young pups all of their meals out of my hand for the first couple of weeks. Good video
I have a 6 month old American Bully and getting him trained up in the next few weeks. This is awesome content and thank you for teaching us
Man u are so awsome with dogs
I recently had a pit come up to my job
I took to her an she took to me so i gave her a home
Ive never trained any dog of any kind anywhere so im learnin alot from ur videos
An so is she
But she is a super duper smart animal man i mean super smart
Im alittle worried about some things because i think her previous owner was maybe a bit abusive or maybe just lazy an neglective
Keep up the longer videos your saving dogs lives and owners hearts ❤️❤️ thank you
Amazing video. I’ve ordered many of the training tools you suggest. Already seeing some improvement in my dog. My dogs lack of training is my responsibility not his! Thank you for your motivation!
Get motivated!
@@AmericanStandardK9 any chance of a video or series on tools and an example?
I'm upset but motivated!!
Thank you, Garret for showing this video. I gave our Engl Mastiff puppy (2 y/o) a bully stick, then approached her and she growled at me. I backed off, I know big mistake. But just recently (about 2 wks ago) our girl growled and snapped at me a 2nd time when she was destroying her soft dog toy. I corrected her immediately, took the dog toy away and put her in her crate. She is a sweet gentle girl and never acted dominate towards me in the past and hasn't done it since this last time. You have given me the confidence to stand my ground and teach her what behaviors will not be accepted.
This is pure GOLD. I’ve watched a lot of training videos from Michael Ellis to many others, and this is better. Thanks! I’ve used the same system for my pit ( Off a level 2 PSA pit). Whisky looks like a great pup.
I’m about to get a gorgeous bluenose and I’m absolutely stoked!!!! Love your videos and truly appreciated!!!
Sometimes they deserve to be spoiled. Love the video, love the training. Im on my second pit and its all about restraint. Pittys just want love and sometimes you gotta make em work for it or they will work the hell out of you.
I agree about the feeding I did that with both my pits from puppies hand fed and everything because I had grandkids and knew one day more. I could walk up and take anything away or they wouldn't take it till I said get it. Pits are amazing and loving .my grandson lived with us since birth the female was always there by his side the male would cry when he did and major kisses 😅❤
I like how there is not a lot of verbal communication with the dog besides the relevant information - the perfect example of less is more - thank you for the video
giving the treat from the eye level is such a good tip!! my dog has been giving eye contact but always breaks to look at my hands. Thank you!
The prong collar you suggested made a new dog do fantastic !!
Whisky brought such a smile to my face! What a wonderful little Pittie! 😍😍❤❤
13:31 We had the sweetest blonde lab while i was growing up but he was food aggressive. Always got yelled at for trying to pet him while he ate but he would let me stick my whole fist in his food bowl and not care. that dog never even considered snapping at me a day in his life. Rip Monkey. Truly the best dog around kids.
You’re completely correct. i NEVER listened when they told me not to touch Monkey while he was eating. granted i was 3 years old. But it’s much easier to train a dog than train a child.
Just one of your videos completely changed my dog and helped me correct my errors
A fantastic video! I love working on place stays with client dogs. I like to get them to the point that jumping jacks or someone running by them result in eye contact, not movement off of the place.
We always say that pitbulls are definitely dangerous, especially the friendly ones. Those tails moving at high speeds can be a weapon! I worked with a sweet girl that ended up wagging hard enough that when it hit the wall, she ended up having to go to the vet.
I really enjoyed watching you. I've watched hundreds of hours of training videos and you stand out for sure. And I agree you definitely should be able to "bother" a dog thats eating.
Thank you!
He's one handsome well behaved dog. My 2 year old granddaughter used to sit by my pitties food bowl and feed her one kibble at at time. The dog loved it and I knew I never had to worry about food aggression
I used this freshaping method on my 4 month year old german sheperd/husky mix and she understood this very well thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Wonderful work. No raised voice. Very calm. Outstanding Sir.
I've got a mixed breed 5 month old puppy that I did a DNA test on so I could understand and train her better. She's 35% American Pit Bull Terrier and 23% German Shepherd along with several other breeds. She has 55% gaurd dog breed makeup. Since finding out what breeds of dog she is, I'm going to learn to train her. I've difficulties training her, but know I see why. I can tell she's intelligent because I've taught her to ring the bells hanging on the doors that go out and on the inside of my bedroom door, so she can alert me to go out if we are chilling in the room. I will be subscribing and watching more of your videos. Thank you! If you have more videos on training these type breeds those will be my first ones. 😁
Crazy how good your tips are. One of your shorts on leash training about it being follow the leader and the advice given there helped tremendously with my dog who I recently adopted. Plus this video giving some great tips and the techniques used helped me get my dog to stay when I am out of eyesight from him. On my own once he couldn't see me he would always break but following your techniques he was able to not break almost immediately. You make some amazing content!
This is the best way I've seen this explained! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
@ if I've already trained my dog "bed" should I just use that word, or use "place"? Will she be confused?
Following your tips, tricks etc me and my two bully's have had a lot of fun learning and teaching eachother a whole new routine, commands etc really cool and rewarding when they realize it benefits them and can also be fun to learn new things
Good finally seeing a pitbull just need some tips for mine. Haven’t been with him for 3 years I lived overseas and just want him to be better trained and obedient.
I love this channel I recused two pitbull a they’re so pretty and well behaved. This helps me so much it’s like magic ❤
Incredible video!!! I've learnt soo much from watching and listening, thank you my good sir!!!!!
So far I can say your videos have helped me 90 %
Thank you bro , ima buy that package wene the funds get right
Thank you you'd be surprised how many videos I watched just to get the few key pieces you offered in yours I really appreciate your work thank you
Positive reinforcement has some tools to add to the tool box but it is definitely not one size fits all... If we had not *wisely* used a shock collar, I would probably have a dead dog because he was a door dasher. When he almost got ran over by a car I went out and got one. It helped establish boundaries, only needed to use it a couple of times. After initial use, the beep works most of the time, sometimes the vibrate function. We have a great relationship, he gives me wonderful eye contact. Right now we're working on his strong pull during walks, he's intelligent and understood when I said shape up and you can have a chicken foot when we get home and he did. He is an answer to prayer and his training was an answer to prayer
I’m learning so much from your videos. You explain everything thoroughly in a easy to understand manner. I am hoping that some of these techniques helps the communication between me and my dog. Thank you so much. 😀
I hope so too!
ya'll deserve alot more love then you get for these vids mate, keep it up
Thank you for an outstanding video. You are a super trainer.
After checking many many videos....your methods and videos are excellent...bravo!!!!
What a wonderful job you're doing! 🎉
Great video, like the way you guys hugged after he was done eating :)
Greaaaat lesson i think so too about teacing him to behave nice with his food thankew for existing
one of the most useful vids on your channel, thanks
I love calling spatial pressure herding because it's the same thing. I think it's natural because it's the first thing I accidentally taught my dog.
We have always taught our dogs to be ok with us petting them when they eat. We never allowed our kids to annoy the dogs while eating, but it was always important for our dogs to know that it was never ok to growl or be food possessive with us. We hand fed them as puppies and played with their food. Never had an issue in all these years with multiple large and small breeds. It allows you to also be better able to take an item, or food they should not have, away from them to keep them safe.
You’re awesome man! I could literally watch your videos over and over! Thanks
I just want to know how Zac George and Cesar Milan have a platform and this guy doesn't. But I did find you because this video was in the article on the Colby pitbull by Pawsafe! I'm glad it was there because this was VERY helpful! My lab x GSD is stubborn as heck and generally doesn't care what I tell him to do because I'm not his real mom 😂 He *is* really food motivated so I think this method will work!
Thank you Sir. What a valuable video. Your explanations are clear, concise. Results are really good to see. Thank you for sharing real life training and results.
invaluable lessons
Fantastic video. Really great source of information!
Good show. 👍
When I was a toddler our beagle dog and I both got spanked. Story goes, I went over and reached in her food bowl. Suzie growled and nipped me(no blood or serious bruise). Suzie helped raise me, and I raise dogs around children to this day.
another great video. I never knew the purpose of the little platform. Now I know it sets a physical boundary. Awesome. I'm gonna try it with my Malinois.
I need you to help train my dog. This is a great video. Very helpful. Thank you for sharing and showing us great training to make our furbabies successful in and out of our home. I enjoy all your videos!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I really learned a lot and will apply your training method to my rotty pup.
I just love you guys. I am struggling with my dog family. But I'm am ready to really dive in to ur training and make some changes. I have 5 out of control dogs cu I just don't know what I'm doing. I did not even realize what it means to be a dog owner. Your videos are so straight forward and easy to understand. I can't wait to get started. Thanks keep the videos coming!!! Going to go check on a prong collar now.
I like this guy, but also like beckmans dog training. Check him out he’s really helped me.
Why 5 dogs? That is probably the problem.
@@queennanna5595 well it just sorta happened...and now I love them all like my kids and yes I realize that is too many.
This lesson was excellent 👏👏👏🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I make a point to put my hands in and around my dogs feed bowl
while they are eating. Its worked for me.
Thanks, that was really helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
I hate all the people that think there are hard and fast "rules" for training dogs. Every dog will respond to things different, do what they respond to. A lot of dogs will end up disobedient woth only positive reinforcement. Mine did wonderfully with it and turned out perfect.
My old dog didn't give me a lick of respect until i started on some negativity. Then made huge strides.
oh my god those ears!!! So cute!
What kind of idiot would think that you shouldn't teach a dog that anyone can touch him or his food. 15 years ago with no training what so ever, I knew the importance of always putting my hands in my pit bull's food from a young age. Taking it away, then giving it back, having her share with other dogs and have other people touch her food too. This is just commen sense. It was so nice to know that a baby could take food from her and she wouldn't react other than waiting and hoping she'd give it back.
I don't understand why people think it's a bad thing to mess with your dog whilethey're eating. I personally make sure to touch and rub and pretty much do anything with my dogs that might startle them without desensitizing and make it to where my dogs are not going to make a big mistake because they're focused on eating when something comes up and startles them. In my opinion this also prevents them from resource guarding with you because they learn to trust that your presence and your touch does not mean that they are having their recourse taken. I believe that me doing this is a big reason why none of my dogs have ever had resource guarding issues with toys, chews, or food or anything besides a couple situations to where I was the resource that a dog guarded. This is a common problem with people that are like me, not naturally assertive and give too much affection so when this happens, I have to fix me and up my structure.
Great video. I got a pit mix and I always got down with her when she ate. Now she has never been food aggressive towards anything or anyone. I could stick my whole head in her bowl and she doesn’t care.
Good advice,again.
I have a pit about a year old now and when she eats my kid two year old sits with her and plays with her food while she eating well not all the time. And she don’t do nothing like try to bite him. We taught her when she bites on something she not suppose to we just tell her “ no biting”. And she stops. They both love each other.
Beautiful doguie❤❤
I just got a pit off of these people and I started watching these videos I hope they help
The arms out technique is what my father in law taught my nephew to put up chickens, ducks, and geese and my nephew is 5 and does it by himself now
Enjoying your content!
This is an awesome video.
I have a 5 year old daughter, and Molly her American Pitbull sees it normal for my daughter to come over and feed her and also pet her while she eats. Why? Cause ever since my daughter turned 2 i let her feed her dog with the purpuse that the dog will never bite the hand that treats good and feeds them. I have never had an issue, or even seen an action from her dog that would make me worry about em being close to eachother so im with you on this one Zak💯
I used to take the food bowl every now and then ,, and she never had any food guarding issues ,, best thing for kids aswell
Awesome.
Luv Whiskey, Luv pitbulls 😍 thank you for the video
11:10 the dog is evidently happy😂
My Boerboel gets petting and a kiss on the head every time I feed him, while he is eating. I’ve always done so with my dogs, because little kids don’t recognize the danger.
I agree my husband and I teach our dogs to be ok with us petting them while they eat.
Omg I love him looks so much like Beau. If the wind blows a little harder will he fly 😂. Fantastic job really good video . He’s soooo sweet .
Pits are Awesome
Very cute boy. The positive only freaks about this! 😉
So helpful. Thank you
10:15 - 10:35 how do we go about getting a dog who has a habit of going after the fallen food and removing said habit.
That's great... My 6 month pit I got a couple weeks ago doesn't even know how to sit(she forgets whenever it's inconvenient for us)
Congrats on your new dog! Check out our suite of online courses at DIYK9.com, we've got your training needs covered!
this is amazing thank you
I love your work with the dogs! Whiskey is a beauty!! Is he pure pitbull?
My neighbor gets bit by her own dog whenever she comes close while the dog is eating. She can’t even walk by the dog. And that is so UNACCEPTABLE. She feeds the dog but she can’t even walk by?!🤮
I sat beside my dog and petted her since the very first meal I gave her. Because I want her to get used to it. She’s been with us for almost 5months now and we never had a problem with her biting anyone for getting close to her while she was eating.
I have tried other methods sometime before I found your channel but I didn’t get the results I wanted as soon as I hoped for. Your videos have been really helpful. My now 8month old sheltie behaves much better than my colleague’s 2year old border collie, an acquaintance’s 20months old border collie (who actually participate in dog shows), 1 year old labrador retriever.
We get together sometimes and let them play off leash. One time the dogs went a little too far from us chasing each other, the owners started calling their dogs but will not comeback to them and just when they start to chase their dog I called mine and she ran straight to me with the other dogs behind her. The other dog owners was shocked and praised my dog.
Thanks to you!😂
We still have a lot of things to learn. So please keep educating us.
Lol the ending got me laughing after the multiple rants throughout the video. Looks like you are torturing that poor baby 😂😂
