  • Part 2 of our long weekend in West Virginia took us through the Otter Creek Wilderness Area and the peak of Spruce Knob, at 4,863 ft the highest peak in WV! We found a killer camp next to a stream and had a great day out in the sun after the first day's rain soaked adventure.

That camp site at the bridge and little water crossing has the most beautiful waterfall and deep pool in the whole area. You just needed to walk back another 100 yards.

I grew up in WV and what you call overlanding were just normal roads to us. My friend had to cross a creek everyday as part of his driveway. Haha

There is a great little walking trail that goes around the knob with much better views and a cool boulder field to scramble down to an open grassy area as well. That stream side campsite looks awesome. Good find for sure.

Sounds awesome! Wish we had more time up there but it was a loooooong day. 😅

How did you manage to locate that campsite? There are so many great dispersed sites in that part of the state, but finding one on the water is rare indeed. My usual destination not far from the ranger station east of Durbin, also on a creek, and extremely secluded, but that's the only one I found near water in my travels.

So this site was along a road with plenty of dispersed sites along the river actually. This one near the runoff was an outlier. I've heard it's since been POSTED though. It WAS NOT marked posted when we were there and since it was on the same road as the other thought it was part of the site system. So unfortunately this isn't a site we can go back to even though we treated it well :)

@@DarksideOffRoad I hate when that happens. Secluded and near a stream is a home-run but in the northeast that's pure unicorn territory. The cluster of sites I found aren't too bad, but nothing like that one. I'm still looking for a couple of places for 2025 when I head down towards Bearwallow for a Badge of Honor run. I figure a few days near Spruce Knob/Greenbank, then head down to do the Hatfield-McCoy.

At spruce knob there's a small loop trail near that tower you was at that takes you to a better view just letting you know for next time

Great video! I’m in eastern North Carolina, but looking to get to the mountains in early June, and considering West Virginia. These areas may be exactly what I’m looking for.

Grab the Purple Lizard maps for the area if you do. They were a big help for finding camp and destinations to see!

Hey, I'm near Cleveland/Akron and have a 2011 Xterra. I'm retired and have all kinds of free time. I'd love to tag along on one of these trips. I used to backpack in Dolly Sods and Otter Creek. Central Pa. is only 3-4 hours away from me.

Good videos, great work. How have you been like the tires performance? from the view video's ive watched so far they seem to be giving good traction.

Thanks! I like the Ridge Grapplers for durability, style, and they’ve been good on rocks and dirt. They have some trouble in snow / mud on inclines where I’ve seen Toyo / Mickey ATs do slightly better.

Where is the roadmap at? Google and Gaia don't show me roads in this area unless im missing something.

Check out the Gaia Overland and USFS2016 layers, both will have the Forest Roads and areas I mention throughout the video.
Also the Purple Lizard Maps came in handy as well to spot things.

Really interested in watching the video, but the music is off-putting. I’d definitely subscribe if there was no music.
