  • Here is a classic demonstration video for this early VTR machine, from Sony's U-Matic era. Conceived around the same time as AVCO's Cartrivision system, Sony's first commercially available videocassette player provided for those with a certain fortune a chance to record anything, anytime in a method that was much more convienent compared to the 1/2" reel to reel machines that dominated the home video market in its early years. Due to its enormous cost (when released, it cost about the same as a small car), it was mostly reserved to commercial use, a trend that continued with the release of the Betamax in 1975.

This was in the bad old days when technology in my country, Australia, took longer to become available. It wasn't until 1980 that VCRs were sold in Australia and it wasn't until 1989 when my parents first bought one.

I'm hearing you Jimmy, I bought a Sanyo Betacord VTC9300 from a pawnbroker in 1985 at the age of 15 for $30. It wasn't until 1987 my father seeing what his son had acquired finally bought a JVC VHS all be it begrudgingly having fought against the Japanese in WW2.

This shows that there was at least some hope of making U-matic into a domestic system at the start. In the end, it became used in industrial, ENG and occasional broadcast applications. Note that this was not a Sony-only product. JVC (and maybe others?) also make U-matic equipment. The format was still being used into the early 2000s. I've even seen adverts recorded on U-matic with web addresses included.

I have worked a lot with the U-matic system in the 80s and 90s. Both with portable recording and with editing (with much more modern machines than in this video!)

It even has stereo sound? Now that's advanced... Stereo TV broadcasts wouldn't become commonplace until the late 1980s...

I'm surprised it took about 30 years for stereo to develop from their namesake music players to TV. I'd think sometime during the '70s, around or shortly after the time it became common on radios it would have taken off. But I guess the equipment made it cost prohibitive for awhile. Many early VCRs also didn't have stereo, not becoming common until around 1985 or so.

I remember stations would do FM stereo simulcasting so you could get stereo sound on TV. In 1985 I remember a local TV station interrupted their programming one evening to inform you they were turning on their new MTS stereo system at that moment.

Fantastyczna reklama, super że nie zaginęła! ❤️👍🙂
😲 a jeśli by ktoś jakimś cudem przywiózł z zachodu ten sprzęt to byłby na celowniku służb specjalnych i prawdopodobnie zostałby mu skonfiskowany!
Dlatego dziś po latach sam mam w kolekcji kilka Sony Betamax, kilkanaście VHS, do tego wiele kamer na różny system kaset video 🙂
Pozdrawiam Serdecznie wszystkich miłośników starego video 💪👍

U-Matic in my age of Video never household can afford! only Video2000, VHS or less Beta was in the Austrian, Graz market at this mid 80s. A Videorecorder cost 2moths income and near nobody have one. Till the price is falling down to a monthly earning then the people buy it. Or in the Video-Shop they rent the Player to there Videocassettes. Most of them was Funai VHS Player.
