    Hello guys. Thank you for making an effort to feature other fast food chains that is not Jollibee. May i suggest that when you try to eat Halo-Halo, please mix all the ingredients first before getting a spoonful. Halo-Halo literally means "mix-mix". It will really make a huge difference the way it will taste and how you'll enjoy it. We Filipinos eat mostly with condiments on the side. So for basic anything BBQ we dip it in a mix of soy sauce, kalamansi, and chillies/chilli oil if you like it spicy. Some may even add a dash of vinegar to the three mentioned above. If you're at a loss on how to properly eat or enjoy the food, you can ask a local sitting on the table next to you or your server or anyone. We're all willing to help. Keep healthy and stay safe.

    • @PureDetour
      @PureDetour  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      You may absolutely suggest, we need to learn as much as we can. We did mix it all up after we ate it down a bit, that just doesn't show on up camera. There was no way to mix it in the vessel it came in. Are we supposed to ask for an additional one to be able to mix it all up?

    • @zulevn
      @zulevn ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@PureDetour hi there. Sure you can ask for an empty container to mix it all up. It will take a bit of patience and extra care to mix it but you can start to break the ice around the edges. You can also try plunging the spoon and mix/move the contents at the bottom till it's mushy and work your way up.

    • @gigigavino-punsalang7400
      @gigigavino-punsalang7400 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Only true halo-halo eaters would know. Try plunging your spoon in the bottom of the glass and gently mix the concoction. Then work your way upwards.

    • @mrawesome3959
      @mrawesome3959 ปีที่แล้ว

      Work your way on the bottom then you'll see it will break down and eventually you'll mix the whole thing up.

      People don't have to mix it before they eat if they don't want to. I prefer to eat mine by eating the ice cream first then mixing it. Filipinos don't all do it the same way

    As a former manager at Mang Inasal. That yellow sauce is called "chicken oil", to enjoy it better, mix rice with chicken oil and soy sauce together. You'll be able to enjoy the taste better plus the aroma. With your chicken, go with soy sauce and calamansi on a separate dish for that distinct flavor in between rice and chicken. Yum! 😁

    1. Pancake House (pancakes!, beef tapa, fiesta taco salad)

    3. Chowking (siopao, buchi, wanton soup, sweet & sour, chowfan)
    4. Goldilocks (Dulce de leche cake, mamon, polvoron, pork barbeque, etc.)
    5. Mang Inasal (must try Palabok, Halo halo)
    Tips: halo halo dessert must be mixed thoroughly before eating hence the word "halo"
    Other rec places:
    1. Banapple (the best beef tapa ever!)
    2. Kenny Roger's
    3. Goto Tendon
    4. Turk's
    5. Mary Grace Cafe
    6. Nono's

    RE: Goldilocks
    Goldilocks used to have a contender called Red Ribbon that started in the early 80's. Red Ribbon had a superb cake and pie selection (peach walnut pie with a crunchy chewy meringue based pie crust -- to die for), and they also served nice meals. There was a time when I really thought that Red Ribbon would kill Goldilocks.
    In the mid-2000's, Jollibee bought Red Ribbon. Then they greatly simplified the menu by getting rid of all the meals. They also reduced the selection of cakes to just the bare minimum usual suspects (e.g. chocolate log, sponge, etc.) They also got rid of the peach walnut pie. Really sad.

      I mean think of it from a business perspective from JFC's POV. Karamihan sa mga inacquire nilang mga companies tended to have varying flavors from branch to branch, and some may have had profits but not enough to say they are growing as a company. They streamlined everything, they made sure na "fast food" became fast food, and desert shops became "desert shops". If you want proof of this, the amount of locations now compared to before they were acquired by JFC is testament to their growth that JFC's business expertise have brought. Yes, it's sad that so many of what they acquired lost their "personalities" or "souls", but they got business growth as an exchange.

    • @PureDetour

    You shouldve tried our local Sbarro, it tastes so much better than the ones in the US especially the meatballs, although their garlic bread has significantly declined in quality since the 90s/2000s. For Chowking, it really used to have great quality before and there were some really great dishes like the braised beef, but as with anything acquired by Jollibee Foods Corp, they keep scrimping on the ingredients and the quality and charging high prices :( Chowking in Metro Manila you wouldn't even get that much chili oil anymore. My favorite there used to be the braised beef when it was still on the menu and the beef noodles. They also used to have a Chinese style roast chicken that was replaced with fried chicken when JFC acquired them. Even Red Ribbon quality isn't as good, they used to have the best palabok out of all the fastfood chains. Another favorite chain growing up was Tapa King, although as a practice people generally like their local open air tapsilog eatery. You should try local chain coffee shops too like Bo's Coffee.

    Burgers - If you can, look for Sweet Ecstasy Burgers - IMO and a lot of foreigner friends swear it is by far one of if not the best burger they have ever had. It was ranked in the top 50 burgers in Asia. There are only a few branches so far.
    Halohalo - for a local, my fave is still Little Quiapo's version - authentic, creamy, real ube ice cream and leche flan.
    Pancit or Noodles - Little Quiapo also makes the tastiest bihon (rice noodles), sotanghon (vermicelli/glass noodles), canton in the city, IMO.

      Sweet Ecstasy Burger is basically the best burger in the entire damn country but with not many branches so still a bit of a hidden gem.
      When I got back to Manila after a few years away I was crossing my fingers that they made it through covid and headed down to my usual branch on Jupiter St in Makati and sure enough they are still there. (happy dance time)
      Definitely not the cheapest but the double (which is what I usually get ) is a meal in itself and I don't even order a side because it's so filling and juicy and pretty damn near much the perfect burger.
      8 cuts gets an honourable mention but nothing beats Sweet Ecstasy Burger.

    Just came across your vlog. Happy to see you guys exploring the food experience in the Philippines. When we used to live there, we enjoyed Mang Inasal, Chow King, Red Ribbon, Amber Restsurant for their pancit malabon and pichi pichi. For quick take out, I remember my inlaws love to order chicken from Chooks to go.
    The tocino breakfast meal you ate can come in different variations like instead of tocino, it will be tapa (beef) or bangus ( milkfish) and will be served with sunny side up egg, garlic rice and with pickled papaya side dish (achara).
    Halo-Halo means literally mix-mix so you have to mix the halo halo. Though I must admit, I cheat, normally eat the flan or icecream topping, then I mix the rest. 🥰
    Pancit comes in different variations, different types of noodles, so the taste varies too. If sold on a fastfood chain expect ingredients not to be complete. But if truly home cooked or on a real sit down restaurant, the pancit will have more ingredients to it
    Goldilocks and Red Ribbon are popular, usually where we will buy cakes and pastries like ensaymada, mamon etc.
    Try to find Gerry's Grill, they serve yummy sizzling plate food.
    Actually to really get the feel of fast food, just go around at the food court inside the malls, usually at the ground floor of the mall, there will be a food court.
    That is the fastest way to have your fast food.
    Yes, Mang Inasal does have the unli- rice offer. Personally, I do not like people doing it out of sheer gluttony. Feels like wasting food. Better just eat what one can consume properly.

    @13:00 For halo-halo, which is would mean mix-mix in English, you actually need to mix that glass using your spoon. It's kinda hard to explain how to do the mixing process, but basically you stab the shaved ice repeatedly while making sure you don't make too much mess and keeping the toppings from falling off as well. The recommended way is to start stabbing on the one edge of the glass then repeatedly stab the shaved ice at the bottom of the glass. What you want to do see is the shaved ice almost turning into liquid, which in turn also creates space for more shaved ice to be stabbed again. Every "stab" you do from the top, you want to hit the toppings so that it would be included into the mixture. Repeat this ice murder until every shaved ice has turned into liquid. Then enjoy your hard work afterwards.

    As someone who grew up in the 80s-90s, pancake house's menu was way different to the current and was better. They did change the menu when the brand was sold to Max's group of companies (the fried chicken house), this umbrella company also owns Yellow Cab, Max's, and locally owns Jamba Juice and Krispy Kreme, among others. If you head to BGC, they have a spot there where all the brands under the company operate.

    I like the niche you've chosen, food. Fave kind of vlog of filipinos. Also am happy that you covered army navy, pancake house and yellow cab. They're not getting much air time but these franchises can really compete with the best in the US. Chowking really is comparable to panda express but better, in my opinion. Panda Express just started recently, about a year, and I didn't really like it. Too oily and a bit flavorless. Zark's, I think, need to improve their flavor. Something in their meat that I don't like. Their menu is really attractive but the taste of the food is a bit off. They're cheaper than burger king though.

    • @PureDetour
      @PureDetour  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and the great comment. Panda Express has been around in since i was a kid in the US(and I am old af), and it has always been garbage. In fairness to PE, it was my introduction to Chinese food. I would later learn that it was horrible Chinese food but my introduction to it all the same.
      No clue if the Philippines version and the US are one and the same but I do think Chow King is better

Bagnet (deep fried to perfection pork) 3. Empanada Ilocos(Empanada, etc. In the Cordillera (including Baguio), they have the tinola version called "Pinikpikan". In Pampanga,"Sisig". In Bicol region"Bicol express= Super spicy pork with coconut milk., In Cebu, they have the authentic Lechon Cebu and Chicken Inasal. In Iloilo, they have "Batchoy". to name a few. There is a specific sauce for chowking siopao you can find at the side table along with the condiments and it's very thick and tasty sauce.

    Almost always messing up how to eat halo halo. I cringed when the chili was mixed with the rice much more when it was used with the siopao maybe I should try that. Tip put toyomansi with the chili and dip the siomai it will taste better because it can be bland on its own

    Our foods are influenced by many cultures but we cook them with our own spices and distinctively. That's why our Filipino noodles tastes differently than the ones you can order from most Chinese restaurants.

    • @PureDetour

      Without a doubt. Filipino food is distinctly it's own and really does not resemble anything else in the region.

    I'm honestly glad you didn't force yourself with the unlimited rice challenge. I once saw a video of foreigners trying it and wasted a bunch of rice in the process. It was just infuriating how they seem to think it was funny. 🙄

    • @PureDetour
      @PureDetour  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I see no reason to try it. Like I said in the video if I had to give it a go I could probably do 5 or 6 and that comes nowhere near a record, so what the point? lol
      But I thank you for taking the time to watch
