    love the idea, with the exception of needing a ladder to put the ladder away. Maybe a pully system to get the back end up?

      A pulley system would be great! For the once or twice a year I use my ladder, I didn’t want to take the time to make one. Thanks for the comment!

      Yes exactly needs a second ladder to do the job😂😂

    The rolling bar is a brilliant idea. I've been using two L shaped inserts to slide in and secure the lower part of my ladder. I then run a chain through a step on the top side to hang and lock it in place on the ceiling. I'm renovating the garage and covering up the trillion and trillion of holes the previous homeowner drilled. I never thought of using a rolling bar. I'm going to use that! And replacing the Z inserts for two hooks as well. Thank god my garage ceiling isn't that high.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

    It's a nice idea, but that roller is extremely dangerous. A better and safer way to do this, as I've done with my heavy steel vehicle cargo rack and a 28' extension ladder, is to use those J- hooks on both ends (two on each end). You first set the top of the ladder on two J-hooks set inside of the ladder rails and facing the same direction as the length of the ladder, to hold the top rung, which would prevent it from falling/rolling off, if you dropped the other end while lifting it up. Then, you place two J-hooks on the other end just outside of the ladder rails and also facing the same direction as the length of the ladder. As you lift the second end of the ladder up, you merely rotate the J-hooks about 90° inward to now hold each of the rails. It's unnecessary, but for those who like redundancy, you could also mount additional J-hooks on both ends to mirror the setup on either opposite end and simply twist those to also hold the respective ladder rung and rails. I've used this method (the 4 J-hook method) for 20+ years with zero issues or worries, and as long as your J-hooks are screwed deep into the ceiling joists, just twisting them 90° periodically doesn't reduce the J-hooks' ability to hold onto the joists at all.

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the detailed explanation. That looks like a good solution. I never thought about rotating the J hooks like that. I haven’t been using the extension ladder as at 71 hrs old my wife won’t let me on the roof! I’m thinking about giving it away.

    We've been re-organizing our garage, I found myself a narrow space between two cabinets, nothing really fit in there til the lightbulb went on, after folding the two ladders, a 6 ft and an 8 ft, I stood them up in between the cabinets. It was the perfect spot. Hubby loved my idea. If I slightly move one cabinet to one side, I may just be able to put in the 16 ft ladder too.

    Great tutorial. Love it! Just what I needed to store my 10 foot tripod orchard ladder. I just have to see how to get it as close to the ceiling as possible. I'm also thinking I should definitely plan for the smaller tapered (top) of the ladder to go in first over the roller, and then use 2 hooks like you did for the wider ("base") end as I feed it up there when putting away.

      Ray has a lot of patience with snarky comments. For many of us who actually get off of our butts and do things (rather than just trolling the internet looking for people to insult), we have several ladders. I have two extension ladders (like the one Ray was hanging in case you don't know what they are called), two step ladders, and one foldable ladder. I have a high ceiling in my garage. Put all that together and I, like many of us, would not need to go buy a ladder so that I could hang the other ones.
      Ray, thank you so much! I need to get these off the ground and hanging on the wall would take up the entire thing.

    I like it, but I have 2 folding ladders, an 8' fiberglass, and an aluminum fold-into-about-27-variations type ladder.... Both are wider at the bottom than the top, wider than the ceiling joists, and I really don't want to have to get one down to climb up and hang the other one.... I've got to find some way to hang it up from the floor. 9 1/2ft ceiling..... And there is a drop ceiling about 6-8 inches below the joists, so that's a bit of a b**ch too. But you gave me some great ideas to work with!!! Looking at one of those pulley systems they hang bicycles with....

    I like your method better than The Family Handyman's use of rollers at *both* ends. Your way ensures the ladder won't go sliding and fall off. Instead of a threaded rod/PVC combo for the one end's support, could I use a piece of 1x2, 2x2, or a dowel? My ladder isn't heavy and I don't think an aluminum-to-wood interface would create a lot of friction when hanging or removing the ladder. Thanks!

I would attach one way rubber jaws on the wall and cleat tie off below that. Just thinking out loud here so you may want to do something different. Good luck!

      Sure. You could put in a pulley system. I feel more comfortable with the ladder securely hanging from the hooks. If you do something different, please share what it is.

    My aunt has it set up like this where two of the rolling PVC parts are just at arms reach so you get it started and roll it back gravity pulls it down to the next rollers and he push it forward.
    The only pitfall of yours is that you need a ladder to access your ladder :-)

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  ปีที่แล้ว

      Her setup sounds good. Thanks for sharing. Yes, my extension ladder is pretty high up. Since I rarely use it, I don’t care that I need a step stool to get it down. In fact, I’m thinking about just giving it away.

      @@Ray_Here Ray- My garage ceiling is 11 ft tall so I constructed the Hanging structure using 2-24 inch 2x4s and attempted to use a 2x4 mounting block for the hooks, but there is just too much of an angle to hang the extension ladder. Do you have any ideas how I can mount the hook down about a foot to make the ladder more level?

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe you could make a rectangular frame out of 2x4’s. Lag bolt the frame to your ceiling joists. Then mount your hooks to that frame? Another option is to mount a few pulley wheels to hoist the ladder up. Then put a tie off on the wall. I’ve actually though this second idea would be good. I just don’t use the ladder enough to bother. In fact, I’m considering giving my ladder away as my wife doesn’t want my old butt up high on my house anyway. If you have other thoughts about how you might solve your issue, feel free to bounce them off me. I’m sure you will figure something out. Share what you do. It might help others.

    • @edwardw5387

    My ladder is much heavier than yours appears-I believe mine ways over 50lbs Louiville ladder/300lb rated). What is your opinion on fasteners for my ladder? Are your fasteners sufficient?

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think so but I’m not a weight bearing expert. You could go with heavier hardware on the roller side. The hooks on the other side should be ok. Check the weight limit when you buy them.

    • @Ray_Here
      @Ray_Here  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try sliding the extension out a bit. Then only hang the rung closest to the ceiling. I hope that works! If not, you will have to find a way to make the hooks hang lower by adding blocks to the ceiling and then putting the hooks in the blocks. Good luck!
