Great insight brother. Also a JiuJitsu guy, 48yr old 2 stripe blue. Right hip replacement scheduled for March 24 2023. Nervous as hell I won’t be able to do JiuJitsu anymore, but your story give me a lot of hope, so for that, I thank you.
Thanks for this video, I share a lot of what you went through, I’m 56 and due to have hip replacement surgery on both joints. I was most scared of what you can do after regarding exercise. The fact you still practice ju jitsu gives me hope.
I'm also having bilateral hip replacement on 11/3 and hope everything goes as good as it did for you. I'm 20 yrs older than you but I have a positive attitude and your video gives me encourgement to go thru this, thanks Brian !
You have no idea how much , better I feel after watching your video. I can relate to everything you said. I'v,e been practicing yoga for years. I knew I was in pain and couldn't figure out why my range of motion in my hips was getting worse all the time. I live in constant pain. I plan on having bilateral hip surgery after the first of the year. Oh, my doctor had the same reaction - he said: How are you moving around like you do? I'm 65 and have been in denial also. Thank you:)
I was just told recently that I need hip replacements on both hips. It was a shock to me. I felt like I was tight as well but nothing helped me. physical therapy muscle relaxers etc. never helped it's been 5 years of 24/7 pain. I went for an injection in my left hip and that's when I found out I needed surgery on both hips. I'm ready because my life has changed for the worst. I went from being an active dancing working sports mother of five to not being able to walk without assistance. The pain is unbearable. I want my life back. Thank you for posting this, it let's me know that I am not alone. There are others who know exactly how I feel
thank you for everybody's comments im getting my left hip replaced in a couple weeks may16th/2017 looking forward to the pain being gone and down the road to be able to ride horses again
Brian Groh I have to have surgery on both of my hips. I have my right hip done first that will be on the 17th of this month. I will be Praying for you Brian, God Bless you!
Brian thanks for sharing your story. I had bilateral hip replacement on June 3rd. I am 7 weeks out. I am 47 and went through all that you mentioned including the denial and avoidance with horrible pain. I am likewise doing really well, exceeding expectations, back to working out, listening to my body when it says not yet. I have got a bit of post surgery fatigue but hoping that goes away soon.
Kevin Novak I am also 47 years old and preparing for bilateral hip replacement. I am in the very beginning of the process. I began with sciatic pain and went to a chiropractor and while he was trying to correct a problem in my back he pulled my left hip out of the socket not knowing that I had an underlying condition (avascular necrosis) because he only took x-rays of my back and not my hips. I have my first visit with the surgeon in two weeks and I am scared to death. Videos like this truly give me encouragement and expiration. I hope you're doing well
I passed my three year anniversary last week. It was the best decision and I am glad I did it. I have no pain, complete mobility and in the best shape of my life. It probably took a full year to recover and I retrained my muscles away from compensating.
Tim. Good luck. I have no regrets and have become the biggest champion for going bionic. In retrospect replacing both at the same time was the right thing to do. The first week was learning to walk on two new legs. Once I got passed that I have never looked back. It took about a year to fully retrain my muscles back to doing lunges squats etc. dr Unger here in DC is a pro. Just mentioned to my wife that there is no scar tissue and I often forget that I have two fake hips. I travel for work and get reminded at security as I will forever set off the scanners. A small price to pay.
Kevin Novak yep you are card carrying now right? I have good friend that's undergoing single HR as we speak. Haven't heard from her in awhile and I'm scared shitless. I don't think I HAVE to do double at the same time as my right side is still pretty strong but I do toy with the idea . I don't have but about 4 weeks of sick/vac time left at work and that's another reason I don't think that both at the same time is right for me. BUT having said that I do feel some pain in my right hip now which makes me wonder if I can spread my surgeries apart. OMG how can I possibly make these decisions? Man you are a real inspiration. I wish I had your support group behind me. I'm so scared.
Is there anyone out there in their 40&50 who have two prosthetic hips and are exercising and doing just fine I am going in for surgery Monday August 7th 2017 for my left hip anterior approach my right hip was done 4 years ago anterior lateral my hope is to be able to go for my walks and exercise in the gym again
your story is similar. I was off the mat for a while but then when I got back to the mat I was in severe pain when I got stacked or when I was defending a single leg. I felt a pop defending single leg and that sent me to the doctor. He said I had arthritis in both hips and both labrum had multiple tears. I am on wait list for bilateral. Did your doctor tell you that he was going to try to do both but see how the first went and make the decision mid surgery so long as the first went well? How long before you could drive?
Just want to say thank you. I'm 43 and I also pratice jiu jitsu, I'm having bilateral hip surgery in two months. I have been going back and forth on whether I'm having the surgery just because I want to stay in BJJ. Your video has made up my mind to have it done. How has jujitsu been on your new hips? Again thank you
Hi I'm 32 and just had a hip replacement. My Dr did the right hip on the 5.5.17 and the left side will be done in August 2017. He wanted to do both sides in one operation but when he saw my right hip he decided to do it in two goes. The reason is that my bone is so week that I can only put 15 kg of wait on it for the first six weeks. But by then it will be strong enough to take 100% of my weight.
I am a 35 year old jiu jitsu guy in bad need of a bilateral hip replacement also. The pain is so bad now I can't train. Hoping to get the surgery soon and train again. How has your return to BJJ been? Any limitations or issues? Thanks.
I had felt only very sever pain in my left hip in 1984.After six months the pain decreased but the hip lost 99 persent movemt. In 1985 the ortho doctor had doubt of TB in the hip and gave me ATT.But I felt no improvment. My boisophy test was held in 1986 and result was negetive. After 25 years the pain returned but not so sever as it was in 1984.Resently I have gone to Ortho doctors in New Delhi. They feel risk of infaction in THR process.Allthough my blood and MRI reports tell that possibility of infection is unlikely. Please guide me.
