On the flat color profile I prefer to set the exposure compensation to -1. It preserves the highlights and the shadows are still there since they aren't being crushed by extreme amounts of contrast.

Just tested this on the Hero 11 and you pretty much nailed it. I watched your video about sharpness too and yeah, out of the box medium sharpness flat color is a clear winner.

Thanks so much for the informative video. I recently picked up a Hero 10 black, and set the color profile to NATURAL because that is what most recommend(ed). After watching this, I intend to re-record the footage in FLAT. VIBRANT was never a consideration. Using curves, you can always add contrast to a scene, but removing it isn't so easy.
I don't understand why people don't use a custom WB setting. Shoot in AUTO, and apply the custom setting in Premiere Pro or you program of choice. It's so easy, and produces the best results. I have always used a customs WB when shooting stills.
    Thanks again.

    Flat
    5+ sat
    5+ contrast
    +3 shadow
    -2 blacks
The I add an emulation with just small strength and I am good.

Wish I had found this video when I first bought my GoPro 10s. It took me three weeks and 300 hours to finally figure out what was going on. I always color correct all my footage using Davinci Resolve studio with a color panel. My main camera is a Blackmagic Cine 6k pro with 3 GoPros for B roll and POV. Another Protune setting for those who want more control, ADJUST THE SHARPNESS TO LOW! This will give you more flexibility in post to adjust the Mid/Detail.

The flat profile seem to be better. What i am not understanding though, is how you get such nice quality on youtube? after i export my gopro footages does not look very sharp, a bit blurry. Stil have a cbr of 100mpbs and h264 codec,

On the HERO 9 Black that I have, there's only Flat & GoPro Color (default). I too found my videos - which include lots of dimly lit scenes with shadows - were coming out looking terrible using the default GoPro Color setting. It was only last week that I switched to Flat & the quality of my videos is significantly improved. I also have a HERO 4 Black which, I think, is also set to the default GoPro Color setting - but the footage I film with that in the same dim shadowy scenes never looked as terrible as that filmed withe the HERO 9. Great video - thanks for putting it out here!

I have the GoPro 10 & the Canon R5. I use "Flat" on the GoPro 10 & CLog 3 (Flat) on the Canon R5. Flat or CLog 3 are the best and I color grade my videos on Davinci Studio 18 by either using LUT's or just regular color grade.

I have the GoPro 10 and went ahead & got the Skyreat 1.33 Anamophic lens instead of the Max lens from GoPro also got the Inkee Falcon Plus stabilizer which was designed for the GoPro that has the Media Mod. You cannot record at 5.3K with the Max lens. However, you can record 5.3K with the Anamorphic lens. Big difference and yes FLAT IS BETTER !! Far more flexible during post production with Davinci Resolve Studio 17.

I do prefer Flat with a -.5 or -1 exposure comp to preserve highlights. I occasionally also use Natural for night Timelapse. As far as Auto WB, never will I use it again. If you're getting great results, awesome. For me, I set either 5000k or 5500k and go with that no matter what the weather is and it's always very close to what it needs to be. I do this with all of my cameras and it makes editing a lot easier.

I just recently purchased a Hero 10 and will continue to use Flat. I also changed the setting to -0.5 EV. Do you normally use 5000k or 5500k more?

@@TheAdventureSpot Hey! I prefer 5500K. If I could get more specific with it I would probably choose 5300K which to my eyes is very accurate on other cameras I have.

I have a hero 5 and with being a photographer i always use the settings to suit the scene never leaving it on auto. I mostly set the WB using the kelvin scale and i use the + & - EV to suit the conditions in very bright sunny weather i often set it to - 2 EV to preserve the highlights.
I always use the flat colour profile as this is akin to using RAW in a DSLR there is so much information that is retained that can be developed in an editor, I uise the free version of DaVinci resolve its amazing and is more than up to the job of producing great looking videos.

  • @AcasaInNatura
    @AcasaInNatura 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Gopro "flat" profile is not that flat. It still has a lot of contrast and you don't have enough flexibility and also it doesn't compare with DJI's 'd-cinelike' profile which is way more flat and flexible.

  • @MAURITS_METERSMAKER
    @MAURITS_METERSMAKER 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey man.
    Some useful examples there.
Since the Hero 5 I have been using the flat color profile. It is obvious that it gives you more room to play with the contrast and shadows.
The one thing I have been struggling with is getting the skin color correct. With the Hero 7 everything looked great. On the Hero 8, 9 and 10 there is a distinct yellow color cast. That is with setting the white balance manually. You can overcome this by setting the value 500 Kelvin lower than it should be, but it is still not great.
It never occurred to me that the auto white balance actually results in better skin colors.
Maybe it is something to check out in another video.
The color is the main problem with the Hero 10 (and 8 & 9). Exposure and clarity of the Hero 10 are totally amazing.
    Greetings from the Netherlands.

Thanks for this useful video. The "natural" mode has made a lot of my footage nearly unusable due to oversaturation. Just a quick question : When shooting in flat mode, do you think I can use the flat profile without touching other settings in the camera or do you recommend to adjust white balance? I really think the flat profile looks a world better and way more natural, but my only concern is the amount of work in post production? Thanks for your opinion. Best, Stephane

The only thing that matters to me is which GoPro version most accurately records what you are seeing. Unless you are trying to impress people who cares whether the color "looks good". When I look back one day at videos of hiking trips and vacations with my family it'd be nice to know it looks like it did that day. No one really focuses on that. You should, I would watch your channel just for that. My latest GoPro is a 9 and it is closer than earlier versions but still pretty much fails at capturing the color you are actually seeing. Does anyone know if the 10 or 11 actually do that?

  • @fixedfocusmediaofficial

Vibrant and natural remind me of how I used to edit pictures before I knew what I was doing. That is how beginners ruin their photos, they make it as bright and colorful as possible and add a ton of contrast and sharpening. They think it looks good until years later when they look at it and wonder what they were thinking. Sometimes they find out sooner though when they have someone else's work to compare it too. I think the so called "film look" which often doesn't look anywhere near the real film I used will probably not age well at either. They think someone else's presets look good now but in ten years they will wish they had the original file. Natural on GoPro looks really bad most of the time and it's sad that GoPro hired a beginner to make it. Sometimes it looks okay but most of the time it doesn't. Even when it does look okay though once you compare it to flat you realize how bad natural is.

I think you should have the texts visible longer than 1-2 seconds. I am not native English talker and I read slow, so I need to rewind and pause in order to be able to actually read the long text "This is using flat profile, see the white is white" and "This is using natural color profile, see the white is not white anymore" and whatnot.
Why couldn't the text be visible there for as long as the shot itself lasts? If you're thinking "maybe it's in the way" -> move it to somewhere else then, perhaps like bottom of the video for the full length of the video, idk.

ONLY FLAT is good. The misfortune with these "default" settings, which promise miracles, is the destruction of landscapes, a huge waste of thousands of videos: you shouldn't use anything other than the flat color profile. The sharpness is always excessive too, the last GoPro to be correct was the 7 in medium-sharpness.

If you will be doing any color grading just pick Flat / Native and call it a day. That is the closest you will get to a log mode on the 10 and 11
I would still use natural if I was never going to do any color editing but I always edit color in my workflow of course.
    AUTO RANT
I rarely use the GoPro outdoors so my rant below is for indoor shooting
NO to auto WB and Auto Shutter.
    - Shutter is FPS x2 (Or if available angle 180)
    - Issue with auto WB is that it can change during a shot and good luck editing that.
If you do not set native then at least set a solid temp. as long as you have a consistent WB you can white balance it in post.
(Over 60fps is the only time for Auto shutter)
