I'm gonna go The Doors "Waiting For The Sun" 1968 today, just has a light breezy feel & even a beautiful song called "Summers Almost Gone' that invokes a sad longing that Summer can't last forever. Underated Doors album to me

A summertime carnival evoking and theatrical rock album that's again a fun listen. Side 1 with Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, and Skateaway is one of the great album sides. Great pick Pete. The Steve Miller Band has lots of great songs that are perfect for a summer day.
    6) Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975
This is easily the best and most enjoyable album from one of the most popular bands of all time. Picking nothing but the highlights from the Eagles first four albums, this is a flawless collection, and everything fits together so nicely it plays like a regular album.
This record has the Eagles doing exactly what they were best at - playing Country-influenced Rock with excellent vocal harmonies. Every track is a winner, and most of the songs work better here than on the albums they're taken from. Few greatest hits anthologies do so much and do it so well. Each of these songs is indispensable - "Take It Easy", "One Of These Nights", "Best Of My Love", "Desperado", "Lyin' Eyes", "Tequila Sunrise", "Already Gone", "Take It To The Limit" (my favorite Eagles tune), "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "Witchy Woman" - and they are some of the finest recordings to come out of the L.A. Country Rock scene of the 1970s.
For nearly 50 years, no summer has been complete without this album playing in the background.
    R.I.P. Glenn Frey
    R.I.P. Randy Meisner
    1) Terry Reid - Seed Of Memory
    2) The B-52s - S/T
    3) Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees
    4) American Graffiti Soundtrack
    5) Weezer - White Album

Hi Pete. Dave here. My pick today is CHICAGO VII. A real outdoorsy album, maybe because it was recorded at Caribou Studios up in the Rocky Mountains. Two of the songs, the singles I've Been Searching and Wishing You Were Here, bring back memories of a student camping holiday in Spain in the early 70s, where they were played a lot in the clubs and bars. And tracks like the instrumentals Aire and Mongonucleosis have a real summery feel to them.

Jackson Browne - Running on Empty (1977)
This was a great album to play at a block party or relaxing in the hammock. It had a whimsical open feel to the lyrics and music. It was unusual in that they were new songs not already on an album; but the songs were recorded live on tour either on stage or in a hotel room or on the tour bus.
Life on the road and the isolation and dreariness that it could sometimes bring; were never expressed better than on this record.
“Running on Empty” as the title track set the pace of an artist that was tired…and needed rest…but just kept pushing regardless. At the time it had a great effect on me as I was in my 3rd year in the US Navy…and I had been traveling to Europe, Africa and Asia. I was indeed run down at that time and in need of a rest. This song still has a profound power to it that few songs can match.
Other highlights are “You Love the Thunder”, “Rosie” & “Love Needs a Heart”. The lyrics are touching and real. Jackson’s warm voice and fine backing vocals make every tune a rewarding listen. The musicianship is first rate and fits the mood of the songs.
“The Load Out” is about packing up and moving on to a new town. It’s kinda sad in a way. It’s like they just get used to one place and it’s time to leave again. The themes of the record are brought home in this fine song.
“Stay” closes the record out in a beautiful way. Reminds me of a call to encore…just give us one more song !!
These last two songs together put an unbreakable emotional stamp on me that still exists when I hear them…one more time…and what a beautiful time it was…my salad days. (Shakespeare…innocence, idealism and youth. Heyday…at the peak of your abilities)
This album will make you feel good and sad at the same time. But it’s cathartic and worth going through. Just close your eyes and let it flow over you. Ah ! Yes !

While Crimson & Clover (1969) is Tommy James' best album with the title track and "Crystal Blue Persuasion," you gotta have "Hanky Panky," "I Think We're Alone Now" and "Mony Mony." Heavy as hell plus tuneful and melodic, Not Fragile is just about a perfect album, Summertime fun captured on "Roll On Down The Highway". That cut certainly conjures up a good time. My favorite BTO track is here and it is "Second Hand". Simply phenomenal. The title cut, "Rock Is My Life, And This Is My Song", "Freewheelin", "Blue Moanin'" and, of course, "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" are other great highlights from this iconic album that was always in the rotation during summertime fun.

My pick for today is Caetano E Gil - Tropicalia 2. Collaboration between two giants of Brazilian music with its rich and complex history. Tropicalia is the collective name of a group of artists who revolted against the military dictatorship in the sixties and Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were on the front lines of the movement. Tropicalia also refers to Brazil as a tropical paradise. They were imprisoned in the revolutionary year of 1968 and eventually exiled from Brazil and went to London where they lived for two years. This one is from 1993, Brazil has been democratized since 1985, and for me it's a masterpiece that we play very often at barbecues. Opening track 'Haiti' is driven by a relaxing rhythm over which Veloso and Gil rapping the verses. 'Cinema Novo' is a declaration of love for Brazilian cinema wrapped in a nice sultry samba. 'Nossa Gente' has a funky percussive groove. The brilliantly executed Jimi Hendrix cover 'Wait Until Tomorrow' is presented with Brazilian percussion. 'As Coisas' is a funky rocker with excellent guitar work. 'Desde Que O Samba é Samba pictures a gathering on the beach during a sultry summernight. Sombody picks up an acoustic guitar and start singing this melancholic tender song. It evokes a time of reflection. These two great legends have proven that music and art in general is the real power in this world, that there is an authentic truth in it that dictators are affraid of. Dictators are essentially powerless bigots who can't handle it.

Hi folks, hope we're enjoying our weekend. Short and sweet today as I'm out all day so apologies in advance if I'm late or don't reply, and thanks in advance if you reply to me.
I'm picking an album I played to death when it came out in 1983, especially that summer, although it divided their loyal fan base, some screaming "Sellout!", but in reality it was a wily move that opened up their earlier catalogue to a brand new audience: the MTV generation...
    ZZ TOP "Eliminator" (Warner Bros)
Yes, the videos/singles with the girls and The Car were everywhere, but the deeper cuts are great too, with Got Me Under Pressure, I Got The Six and If I Could Only Flag Her Down all standouts.
Commercial? Absolutely, but still great summer driving music.

Can't go wrong with Steve Miller Band!! My #6: Going with a little Reggae today. It's the 9th album from maybe the #1 Reggae artist. His music definitely comes to mind with thinking of the Summertime. I could pick anything from him, but I'm going with this album that has no bas tracks on it. Talking about Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus

The song Jet Airliner was written by a guy named Paul Pena, a blind musician. If you haven't seen the documentary 'Genghis Blues', it is about him, and his quest to participate in a Tuvan throat singing event. Great movie.

My pick for today is Electric Ladyland-The Jimi Hendrix Experience. You could call it Eclectic Ladyland cuz it goes all over the place. Ever listen to Crosstown Traffic w/o the kazoos? It's a heavy rocker with funk. Voodoo Child(Slight Return)is my favorite rocker off the album but I love listening to all the diverse tracks. There's something for everyone which is great when you have a summer party going on.

So far I've tended to pick largely more laid back fayre, but sometimes even on the warmest and sunniest days, I feel the need to just crank it up and let rip. Most metal is a little too dark for summertime music, (even though I do still like to listen to Maiden/Priest/Sabbath when the feeling takes me). If I'm driving and the sun is out or relaxing and feel that need for something loud and heavy then one of the albums I reach for is the self titled debut from MONTROSE. Just listing the songs, Rock The Nation, Bad Motor Scooter, Space Station No.5, I Don't Want It, Good Rockin' Tonight, Rock Candy, One Thing On My Mind, Make It Last, sum up the greatness of thus album, they're all perfect loud feelgood summer fayre. There's the thunder from Denny Carmassi and Bill 'Electric' Church, Ronnie's incendiary riffs and amazing tone on every song and on top that voice, Sam (as he was then) The Red Rocker, Hagar. Still amongst his best vocal performances, raw, raucous but always in control. On top of that an amazing state of the art production that still keeps this album sounding fresh and vital 50 years later. Van Halen would go on to produce the perfect loud summer albums in the late 70s, but it started here.

Not my favorite album from the band, but I got this one in the summer of 1998 - between my freshman and sophomore year of high school. And I get those summer vibes from "Rock and Roll," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Going to California," and "When the Levee Breaks."

    1. The Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume 1 (1999)
Psychedelic pop in the vein of Sgt Pepper and the late 60s - early 70s Beach Boys albums are in rotation quite a bit in the summer for me. Great to listen to when you are just lounging in the pool with a cold drink. This act takes clear inspiration from both bands while still adding their own twist. The only track I didn't care for was the sound collage dubbed The Bark and Below It. The rest is just nice melodic and surreal Psychedelic Pop.

Whilst he doesn't have the superstar back up in this touring band, they're still pretty hot players. It opens with a superb version of Driving Wheel and there is a headbanging tour de force of Lessons In Love and Seven Days which is well cranked up from the album version. There's a blistering version of Do or Die. Last Frontier is also terrific here along with Too Much Ain't Enough Love and a couple of others from Freight Train Heart.
