Brothers in Arms was digitally recorded. The SACD is Amazing. When I want to demo the difference between CD and SACD I play the intro to Money For Nothing. The SACD is so dynamic. It's so well done.

Agree with your choices. Scritti Politti’s “Provision” is amazing as well. All the Steely Dan and Alan Parson Project CD’s are incredible, too. Worst sounding CD is absolutely Journey’s “Departure” first release …hands down. They have since redone everything and now it’s much improved, but even the original album itself is terribly recorded. I’m surprised I’ve never seen anything on TH-cam about it.
Thanks for the information. I just picked up a 1985 West German copy of Brothers in Arms CD, Bob Ludwig mastering. Looking forward to hearing a recording that hasn't been messed with by the record industry.
❤ Great choices, I have most of them, however two that I also use are Peter Garbriel - So and Jennifer Warnes - Hunter (all except the cover Whole of the Moon - the production is terrible and completely out of step with the rest of the album which is fantastic) ❤ (a bit late to the game here)
one of the best sounding albums ive ever heard is Micheal Chapmans-full qualified survivor.great bass powerful drumming and David bowies guitar player-mick rronson plays on it.every version, vinyl,cd sound great.the light in the attic cd reissue sounds great, also the bgo cd is excellent
I had not heard this amazing album before. Being a seventies dude I am surprised. Great album and thank you for bringing it to my attention. Superb production values. Michael Chapman's story is a very interesting one.
7 years too late but just to mention the TFT CD is absolutely NOT a target pressing, which believe it or not have a target printed on the face, and this does not. Look it up. Calls into question your other claims about some of these discs, the compression, the mastering etc you’re off on some of that as well. Have a great day.
I would totally agree and I have these albums, I always like the Bother in arms to listening to water flowing, it’s so clear. The sound is so open with incredible detail. The Waters is recorded in Q Sound, (this expands the sound outwards of the speakers by a special process) and the dogs barking are so far outside the speakers, it’s uncanny, BUT you MUST have the speakers set up properly and you have to be dead centre to get the full affect. These are completely different recording process to a group like Oasis, which has a hard sound compressed sound.
Christopher Cross was one of the first digital recordings. My cd sounds very thin and not good. Which version of the cd do you have there? I want to get a good lp pressing of it, as I have his second album another page on lp and that sounds much better than the cd version I have.
@@SPAZZOID100 I read this on wikipedia. Christopher Cross is the self-titled debut album by Christopher Cross, released in December 1979. Recorded in mid-1979, the album was one of the early digitally recorded albums, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System.
I agree. I think the production/engineering etc. is good. It’s just the cd mastering I believe that is so awful. Same w/Another Page. Both are thin, quiet w/no punch.
@@goleson100 I have an original US pressing on vinyl now and it sounds completely different from the cd version. It is much more listenable and has a smooth sound to it. The vinyl of Another Page has an excellent sound to it. The regular original cds I guess were mastered poorly.
Always get the first pressing of the CD if like to do your own restoration and mastering. Every newer one gets worse because someone else has already messed with it and in the loudness wars era drivin to clipping or over compressed. You just can’t fix that.
Thank you for a video. Inspired by it I bought a seemingly authentic version of 1985 “Songs from the big chair” album. What I immediately noticed upon delivery was a thickness of the CD. It was in best case on par with my 2014 Frank Gambale CD. But clearly thinner compared to original Stings’ “Nothing like the Sun” CD. Also the edge of the CD has an arrow like shape compared to a traditional square shape. I wonder if the CD has been polished? Because the seller charged me a good amount. Would it be possible if you have a look at your version of Tear for Fears album and share your observations? Thank you in advance.
It's a crying shame that so many "remastered" CD releases are sonically inferior to their predecessors. It's appalling that mastering standards have moved so far in the direction of gratuitous compression. By the way, there are at least two distinct stereo mixes of _Amused to Death_ -- the 1990s original and the 2015 revision. I concur with your opinion about the album's sound quality vs. its overall quality.
Nice review would add Heavy Weather Weather Report 1977 and Blood on the tracks Dylan 75 I have first on vinyl lost my copy of blood looking for a new one one more Tom Waits Small Change and Katy Lied Steely Dan
I have the 'nothing like the sun" LP by Sting and I must concur that it's superb sounding. I have the "brothers in arms" by Dire Straits SACD and it is my go to audiophile disc. I also have the "seeds of love" CD by Tears for Fears and I have to concur that it's very good sounding. Notable mentions include "cracked rear view" by Hootie and the Blowfish" cd and "yer favorites" by Tragically Hip remastered compilation cd.
Tear For Fears "Everybody Love a Happy Ending" has the worst compression I've encountered. In fact, it was the recording that forced me to search the Internet to find out why I hated listening to an album I liked. Dynamic Range Database told the tale. Horrible.
I agree with most of them, Brothers In Arms is a great album as far as the music is concerned, but the recording quality is very poor, it was one of the first all digital recorded/processed/mastered etc (DDD as it was advertised) but it just sounds brittle, lacks dynamics...depth and so on.. it could have been so much better (and subsequent Dire Straits albums did sound better, as did Mark Knopfler's solo work after that).
Totally disagree. And no, you cannot hear that it’s digital. It’s mixed clear & bright. “On every Street” sounds even better. Knofler’s solo recent albums are lacking both in songwriting & sonics IMO.
I didn't say it sounds digital, I said it sounds britle, lacks dynamics etc.. what ever they did on that album, it is not a greatly mastered album at all compared to many others (not just Dire Straits) The music is great, some of my favourit tracks are on it, but it could have sounded so much better..... On Every Street is indeed leagues above Brothers in Arms, they don't even compare, Mark Knopfler's 'Golden Heart' album is also a great sounding one, but I am not that charmed by his later musical work and haven't bought much of that since... @@SPAZZOID100
@@SPAZZOID100 yes I know and I find it odd for all this praise the album gets. My take is that because it was 'new' (being all digital etc.) and all the rage at the advent of the CD era it had everybody lyrical about the 'all digital' fact, not how it actually sounded.... to me it's one of the more mediocre recordings (even back then, while the music is great), I've heard the album numerous times on a variety of systems and formats, it sounds crystal clear, but flat as a pancake, there's no depth to the mix on most tracks, you don't get any sense of a soundstage except the title track, which does sound better than the rest tbh, and a bit tinny to me, the cymbals/hi hats on the opening track almost sound 'grainy' (can't think of a better word) to me, an album like 'on every street' sounds so much better, there's more space between instruments, clear sparkle to cymbals etc without becoming harsh, better low end too, and the same can be said for several older albums.. I still enjoy the music on it, just not how this album sounds...
Maybe I need to get someday that Dire Straits album... Oh you thinkg so positive from that thing. I have it but hanven't listened it yet. mr. FInglish (Bäd English Recs)
Listening to how sounds sound on a record is not entirely my thing. The Big Chair is a very boring album. Hurting is a much better album and it also sounds great. And when Wilson's remaster comes out, I'll buy it again to rediscover it as it is bound to sound great.

I followed your advice and got me a copy of Seeds of love original one. Paid 2,49e. Thought i knew Woman in Chains, Seeds of love and Advice for the young at heart. Talk about a blast, on a Marantz Focal combination. My Cock Robin best of from 91 also has a surprisingly good powerful sound. I thought these early cds were "poor" on the sonic front. Wow. I've owned a high end audio store for many years. The Dire Straits is certainly popular, which totally burned me out on it, but so many others that both sound better in my view and whose music I can listen to. Not to diss Christopher Cross.

You have some classic drummers in a box there sir
Also, John Mellencamp's - The Lonesome Jubilee album has an awesome sound quality definately Audiophile worthy!
The EMI 100th Anniversary 1997 remastered Kate Bush “Hounds of Love” CD is great, I also have the original UK CD release
❤ Great choices, I have most of them, however two that I also use are Peter Garbriel - So and Jennifer Warnes - Hunter (all except the cover Whole of the Moon - the production is terrible and completely out of step with the rest of the album which is fantastic) ❤ (a bit late to the game here)
How many if these were AAD recorded?
Pretty much only the “Big Chair” album. Even Christopher Cross’s 1979 debut was recorded digitally. I don’t know how it was mixed, tough.
I think 90% of all records have excellent sound
one of the best sounding albums ive ever heard is Micheal Chapmans-full qualified survivor.great bass powerful drumming and David bowies guitar player-mick rronson plays on it.every version, vinyl,cd sound great.the light in the attic cd reissue sounds great, also the bgo cd is excellent
I had not heard this amazing album before. Being a seventies dude I am surprised. Great album and thank you for bringing it to my attention. Superb production values. Michael Chapman's story is a very interesting one.
I have two copies of Dire Straits Brothers in arms. I have one i got from BMG cd club in 1995 and the remastered cd version. It’s probably from 2000.
i have the double vinils version. good sounding but i'm not so very much happy about all the songs. some sounds very good. others don't
7 years too late but just to mention the TFT CD is absolutely NOT a target pressing, which believe it or not have a target printed on the face, and this does not. Look it up. Calls into question your other claims about some of these discs, the compression, the mastering etc you’re off on some of that as well. Have a great day.
Seal II.
Dire Straits self-titled debut album sounds great on SHM CD.👍
Which CC album are you speaking of? His 1979 debut was all analog.
@@SPAZZOID100 I read this on wikipedia.
Christopher Cross is the self-titled debut album by Christopher Cross, released in December 1979. Recorded in mid-1979, the album was one of the early digitally recorded albums, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System.
There is a japanese version, it sounds much better than the original.
There will be no difference in sound quality.
This guy really likes the english accent!
Good taste 👍
Listen to Nothing Like The Sun on CD. You'll be blown away.
Tear For Fears "Everybody Love a Happy Ending" has the worst compression I've encountered. In fact, it was the recording that forced me to search the Internet to find out why I hated listening to an album I liked. Dynamic Range Database told the tale. Horrible.
That is why I did not mention it.
@@SPAZZOID100 It's my hope that a remastered version gets released that undoes the damage....
Songs from Big Chair sounds BEST in Blu Ray Audio 5.1
Agreed! I love The Seeds of Love 5.1 mix as well… so warm and clear.
One of the best sounding albums that so many have never heard of , check out Toy Matinee.
Great album full stop. The production, performing and songwriting are top notch on this one.
Vilken version av New Gold Dream är den bästa då?
It won the first ever grammy for "Best engineered Album", so not sure what you are talking about.
Knofler's solo albums post Dire Straits sound dull & muffled to me.
Are you familiar with a band called Steely Dan?
Yeah why??
Every album that they(Steely Dan) made sounds perfectly awesome.
Gaucho has stellar production (along with most of their albums, actually). All of donald fagen's solo stuff is well produced also.
When I was a kid in the 70's their Aja album would always be used to show off the high end stereo systems. Phenomenal studio recordings.
Yes anything by Steely Dan is audiophile grade in my opinion especially Aja and Gaucho
Maybe I need to get someday that Dire Straits album... Oh you thinkg so positive from that thing. I have it but hanven't listened it yet.
mr. FInglish (Bäd English Recs)
Might I recommend Roger Waters' Radio KAOS? The audio quality is crisp and you'll like the songs better.
Why would I like the songs more? You know what I like?
Nothing like the Sun is a little bright and thin sounding overall IMO
@@DaleRC75disagree.
Sonic masterpiece.
So for all those people who say a DDD disc sounds dreadful I give you:Nothing Like The Sun, Songs From The Big Chair and Sowing The Seeds Of Love 👍
😎
Whoever said that does not understand sonics at all.
Funny how THE greatest sounding LP is unknown to you.. Roxy Music's AVALON
I love the album, but sonically "Songs from the Big Chair" is terrible.
Time for an ear wax removal.
Listening to how sounds sound on a record is not entirely my thing. The Big Chair is a very boring album. Hurting is a much better album and it also sounds great. And when Wilson's remaster comes out, I'll buy it again to rediscover it as it is bound to sound great.
Could not disagree more!

a lot of blue note on cd. are ecellent sounding cd

Brothers In Arms ... The worst Dire Straits album ! Are you listening to music or to sound quality ? LOL
Really? The worst? What about the two that came after it? Certainly overrated but worst?
Nick Jones Dire Straits released just one album after Brothers in Arms.
@@marctoupin3968 Ah yes. My bad.
Dire Straits never had a worst album.
Yeah....strange comment. My favorite of all their albums, and incredible sound quality also. You DO know that the "best engineering" Grammy's category was actually CREATED because of this album right? And it was used to test audiophile sound systems at the time.
Brothers In Arms is digital... I'd never use it as a reference recording... analog is the way to go...
Sure, if you like hearing hiss
And clicks, pops...
You DO know that the "best engineering" Grammy's category was actually CREATED because of this album right? And it was used to test audiophile sound systems at the time.
Digital recordings have better channel separation and MUCH better signal to noise ratio.
BULLSHIT
Really???>we get to hear none of it ??? ? >
Not a rare album at all. You can easily hunt down every single cd pressing of it and compare for yourself.
Funny that Tears For Fears is considered one of the best sounding albums ever, and its mainly 8-bit lo-fi gritty Fairlight samples....
Man I was wrong.
Boston's debut is the best sounding vinyl album I've ever heard, it almost sounds like a CD, very bright. The Beatles "Abbey Road" is the worst sounding vinyl album. Muddy and bassy.
Yeah Songs from big chair is awesome album is pretty good sounding. Maybe except Shout. But piano on I believe is great sounding
Thanks dude!
Wow. I've owned a high end audio store for many years. The Dire Straits is certainly popular, which totally burned me out on it, but so many others that both sound better in my view and whose music I can listen to. Not to diss Christopher Cross. That was a great pop album. Try e.s.t.'s Live from Gothenburg. Amazing, especially the 3 LP set. A good friend has produced over 300 albums, mostly jazz and blues, plus had a Grammy nomination for best production, and he says that album is the best live album he's ever heard. Always looking for great sounding stuff and at least there was no Diana Krall (although my friend produces her guitarist's solo albums which are great musically and sonically)
Who asked?
