    Today I am at long last driving the original V12 version of Aston Martin's DB11. Taking over from the much-loved and long lived DB9, the DB11 was to set the template for Aston Martin's second century. It turned out however to be something of a disppointment - but is it really that bad?
    I've driven the V8 and enjoyed it -now time to sample the 12.

    I've always thought of the DB11 as a real "looker". If I had a complaint, it's that the body seems to sit a bit high, the previous DB cars seemed a little lower. I also thing they looks much better in the metal, it's a car that doesn't photograph very well. But any DB Aston is a thing of beauty in my eyes, and that's a LOT of car for the money.

    I remember the first time I had seen one of these on the road, I almost crashed my car into a divider. Just stunning and sheer presence on the road, that strangled me with its attention.. it was honestly better than seeing a Ferrari on the road.

    I bought a DB11 Volante just a few months ago and its good looks was definitely a major factor. I think it's probably the best looking Aston of them all and has no bad angle. The DBS and new DB12 are too mouthy with that huge grille. DB11 is just right.

      I mean it’s still a DB11, the headlights look too skinny, the middle section looks too long, the rear looks too plain, and in general the car looks too FLAT.

      @@aviationlba747 I know looks are subjective but I seriously cannot comprehend someone preferring the DB12. They just took the DB11 and made it worse. They added an ugly oversized grille, an ugly panel gap, oversized wheels, oversized logo at the back and took away the V12.

    With an exhaust note like that, the only ways it could break its own deal would be a harsh ride or numb steering.

      You cannot really compare the prices between England and Sweden, because England has the steering wheel on the right side and Sweden, like most other countries, has the steering wheel on the left side and then it is more difficult to sell the cars outside of England and thus England has lower prices for its cars compared to Sweden but also against most other countries.

      @@TriToothbrushyup the proportions were all off and they cheapened the design because it was a transitional period for Aston, they managed to fix the looks with the DBS Superleggera but it was too little too late. They didn’t ‘drop’ the V12 after 2 yrs. They fitted stiffer bushes, forged wheels and some cosmetic updates, then updated the software and called it the AMR. The factory AMR software flash is £999 from any AML dealer. Lighter forged wheels were always optional. The AMR is the same car.

I agreed with your assessments up until about a week ago when I had the opportunity to see a DB11 and a Vanquish next to each other at an auction, and I have to say I found myself admiring the DB11 more. Im glad that I am not the only one who disagrees with the point made on the looks of the car. I couldn't disagree more. I think the DB11 as well as the DB12 both are gorgeous. I would even argue that they are the most beautiful cars of the past few years. And with the changes made on the interior I think the DB12 is the most perfect car to exist in modern era. I know its personal preference, but you couldn't gift me a Bugatti or pretty much any other car, without me selling it for a DB12. I just think the DB11 was already perfect with minor complaints on the interior and now the DB12 is just the best car I have seen in the modern era. Everything from the exterior design, the engineering, the colors you can choose to the interior and the infotainment is just perfect. The amount of physical buttons, just perfect. And the DB11 simply formed the base to build on for the DB12. And with that the DB11 already is a stunning car and I could never say that I don't think the DB11 looks absolutely stunning. In fact I never heard anyone else say that they don't like the looks of the DB11.

I prefer the looks to the DBSS and find jt much more modern and convenient than the Vanquish - radio works properly, keyless, auto lights and wipers, etc. As you say, a convenient and pleasant GT to travel in as well as decent to drive. I generally have mine in GT and enjoy the torque (often using manual to keep the revs low. Incidentally, I think max torque of 514 lb ft is 1,500 to 6,500. The upgrade to AMR power has been available from dealers for less than £1k - higher power is at high revs so not interesting to me.

    I owned a 2019 Vantage and absolutelty loved it. People complained about the infotainment, but if that's a deciding factor, then perhaps AM isn't for you (although they seem to have that right in the DB12). People also complained about the look of the car at the front, and that the headlights weren't great. But I drove mine on very dark country roads in New Zealand and found it perfectly acceptable. Sure, the front end isn't as pretty as the earlier models but the steering was fantastic, it's throttle response awesome, and it's top speed is enough to make the front pages of the Herald if you get caught ;). Broke my heart selling it as I moved country and couldn't take it. I traded out of the famed BMW M2 Competition but the BMW wasnt close to the league of the AM Vantage. Would I own one again? In a New York Minute.

    2nd gen Vanquish to me is the one to get, which is an evolution of the DBS and also takes some styling from the One-77

  • @silentviper88
    @silentviper88 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    On a lot of points I agree - just not on the design. Of course its not perfect and the floating c-pillar is not really pretty but the aero was needed. The rear was also not that beautiful (fixed with the DBS) but the front is one incredible beauty and alone the front is far superior to both the Vanquish and the DB9. While the V8 Vantage and the DBS aged quite well, the round shapes and the wooden door-cards from the DB9 aged quicker then even the DB7.
    The Infotainment is not up to date and the missing car play needed retrofitting but apart from that its atleast working (that VW can not achieve nowadays with their millions of sold cars) and to my experience it worked quite well. I still prefer the i-drive from the BMWs of this era but its not far off. And yes I'm technically literate (engineer) but any infotainment will be outdated after a few years - a softwareupdate with modern graphics and the carplay is all it needs. Touch is one of the things that wasn't common at that time and something that isnt working by today.
    Compared to the Jag, the suspension of the DB11 is much better. Compared to the old Astons, I unfortunatley didn't drive them but I can imagine that the suspension, the infotainment and the gearbox is a major upgrade. I was never ever a fan of auto boxes but that transmission made me get a BMW with the ZF 8HP as a daily. The 6-gear box (DB9 and also the older BMWs) was nothing that would give me that feeling that I want to have it. Its also great that its not one of those stupid dual clutch boxes.

      ill be honest with you, I drove this car and WAS NOT impressed and understand why it undersold. JayEmm is usually right, on this one he is wrong, do not buy this car. if you want to drop 80K+, get a DBS 2010 or 2012 DBS or the best AM, the V12 Vantage. I own a 2012 Rapide with the old V12 470bhp for reference. It's a vastly more superior car than the DB11, even though the DB11 cranks out 100+ more hp and torque....Here is my take on the DB11, the styling, due to the undersized grille doesn't get the attention and gawks of the prior generation, Astons garner positive emotions from my experience as a drive of one, driving this one.... not so much. Fine, you don't buy the car 100% for its looks, but performance and driving experience. The only way I can describe the DB11 is driving an overpriced E63.... MB parts sharing; old MB infotainment system, MB engine, MB exhaust notes. those exhaust notes are very important to note (pun intended). For if you drive a Rapide, DB9, DBS, 2016 and under, you will know EXACTLY what I am referring to here. Those cars have exhaust notes that are simply put IMMACULATE... even grandma in her focus says,... "that's a great sounding car," the DB11? Mehhhh, I dont know if they pump notes in, but it just doesn't come close, anyone who has driven these cars will tell you that. Is it fast? yes. That's where it stops. The handling is very electronic, the older cars have power steering pumps so you feel wayyyy more connected to the road, the driving experience is vastly superior as you feel more in control than with the DB11, haven't driven the Vantage, but opinions seem to match those of the DB11, not a great car either compared to its predecessors.... And no im not being nostalgic...

    Great video! What do you think about DB11 vs 991 Turbo S as a comparison? Recently had that dilemma and I drove both. My problems with the DB11 were as follows
    1. Practicality - no glovebox, small boot, no sunroof - given it's a grand tourer and not a sports car not sure that can be forgiven
    2. Looks wise I agree it looks good but didn't wow me. The interior particularly I think is a step down form the DB9
    3. Heavy car, brake pedal requires some push. Turbo S is much more of a sports car (ceramic brakes four wheel steering)
    4. Reliability and running costs- Turbo S is more reliable and cheaper to service
    Overall I don't think the DB11 has a standout feature one needs from this level of car (we know the Turbo S has brutal acceleration that pins you back to your seat). You can say the reason to get a DB11 is because it sounds great and it's an Aston. But in that case you might as well get a DB9 and save some money.

      You sum up my thoughts nicely. I think as soon as you start logically comparing a Porsche to an Aston, the Porsche will come out on top. Aston wins on it's specialness/features/sound and I'm not sure the DB11 has enough of that to trump the 911 pro points. I think buying an Aston is for people that specifically don't want the 911.

    @JayEmmOnCars - most underrated GT out there. I bought for the looks, especially the rear. I am a fan of modernism and it tends to take a while to land. V12 Launch edition is really rare and great value second hand - the modern E-Type to me.
    On weight distribution - what is it with a passenger and a weeks luggage for a GT Trip? It is a Grand Tourer. Never seen passengers and luggage ahead of the front axle ! :)

    This twin turbo V12 Vs the old na V12 reminds me of a similar situation mercedes had. They had the n/a m113 5.4 V8 making 350hp no problem and reliable. 10 years later they build a 5.5 v8 but twin turbo this time and it made 380hp?
    That always bothered me, for a long time I thought the new one was n/a too but I read about them and was shocked they did so little with what they had.

    In my opinion the DB11 can't compete with the previous generations DB9, Vanquish or Virage from an aesthetic point of view and surely that's one of the main reasons people lust after an Aston. Those cars seem to have been too hard an act to follow. At least they have resolved the infotainment in the DB12.

    I accept that aesthetics is a personal choice issue but I have never had such outside admiration for a car I've owned than with the DB11. Put it in a car park and you'll see. Don't get 2 tone though as looks cheap. Also owned for 2 years a new Vantage and similar admiration albeit from the younger community. Now I have a 911 (922) and whilst a lovely car the road noise is truly awful and very few even notice the vehicle. You are right about the interior though designed by some old guy in AM ready to retire.

    The late Vantage works well in the look department. DB11 in comparison is a tad too fat: the design didnt feel like was made for its dimensions; the added empty space didn’t make the car prettier or more interesting. I can only imagine this gen of cars all started from a DB10 with one lift and shift and the other blown up a bit. Consequently the latter failed epically.
    If put next to a gen 2 Vanquish, I know which one I would get into.

The DB12 should be a lot less troublesome than the DB11 with owners having issues with electrics, sat nav and air con. The DB12 is much better in every way, so they say. Looking forward to your time behind the wheel of the new one! Cheers Jay.

    • @silentviper88
      @silentviper88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Says someone that probably never drove both. Regarding that you can get the DB11 for half the price of the DB12 they are not very far away from each other. Power is certainly something the DB11 V12 didn't need. The dash is disputable and the Merc-Infotainment might look a little dated. The DB12 Infotainment will do so aswell in a few years. What the DB12 improved was the handling but to an extent that you're not experiencing in legal boundaries on public roads and for the track its still the wrong car. What the DB12 lacks is the 200.000k+Car fancyness. Like the clampshell bonnet that elimates the ugly line between bonnet and bumper and the infotainment in the Merc were just working fine. I'd rather take the older but know that it works perfectly in any situation. Touchscreens in cars are a no-go. Try the current Volkswagen stuff and you will see what I mean.

      If you’ve got the money, who wants a crap DB11 at 1/2 the money? I so wanted a DB11 (2 yrs old) all my mates said to buy it rather than a Continental but I just couldn’t get past the dire interior and dinosaur info system. The Conti exterior is imposing and a head turner but not the beauty of an Aston. Now the DB 12 has arrived I am so glad I chose the Conti. 22 months to pay off the Conti (which is the most incredibly special place to be in, it feels special every time I get in) and I will then be hunting down a used DB12.

    • @silentviper88
      @silentviper88 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markfleming1177 thing is - if you actually have the money you will probably be more economic and invest the rest of the money in stocks. A Conti is nice looking, yes it got a superior interior quality but here you didn‘t decide between your preference of design, not if the suspension was later further improved or if a dated Benz Infotainment was in. My preference would be for the Aston since I want the handling and compactness a DB11 has over the Conti. A 2200kg plus car will never deliver on country roads like a sub-2000kg car and even the DB11 is heavy but even with only oldschool technology it outhandles the Conti with its 48V torque motors on the stabilisators. I for myself prefer the more pure experience, the raw machinery that I‘m handling and not so much computer-supported technology. Yes, an old Ferrari or a Lotus would be way better but they lack the comfort and reliability of modern cars. Yes a DB11 manual would be perfect but while I‘m not moaning about the old infotainment that still as quite a good resolution, the DB9 really has an outdated monitor and installed at a bad angle, also do I highly doubt that I could get the DB9 as low on consumption as I did with the DB11 (7,7l/100km on a relaxed autobahn cruise with max 140kph and some B-Road-Fun) - the DB9 will be closer to 15l/100km on a relaxed drive. Thats what the DB11 asked for on Autobahn-Rage (220kph plus) and City-driving. Yes sure, people with money don‘t care. I‘m not rich, I just enjoy cars and hate it if have to fill up ever 300km. 800-1000km non stop is the way to go if you want to reach beautiful destinations

    Heya! Thanks for another great video. I've been waiting for this one for a while. You may recall my other comments on your other DB11 videos. I know you get a lot of comments but I'd massively appreciate your thoughts on this comment.
    I have a vision of having a comfy motorway cruiser that is then exciting and sporty to drive when you're on the right road. I'm particularly looking at Astons and have a budget of around 75k gbp.
    Would you rather have:
    V12 DB11 (75k) ❓
    New gen Vantage (75k) ❓
    2013 Vanquish (70k) ❓
    Manual/Auto V12 Vantage (75k) ❓
    Db9.2 (60k and 15k left over) ❓
    DBS (70k) ❓
    And the wildcards that conflicts me the most:
    40k on a v8 vantage and have lots of change❓
    40k on a v8 vantage and then spend the other 20-30k on a daily cruiser like a BMW M5 if I feel it's needed.❓
    I know that is a broad list but I hope you can see where I am coming from. Space isn't an issue but I'm not sure I would need both a v8 M5 and a v8 Vantage. The new gen Astons appeal to me but then I can't imagine why I would chose one over the older generation, especially given it's going to be primarily a weekend car, and that I want to keep depreciation as low as possible. I also generally like manual cars but I'm not sure if a road tripping Aston would be better in auto and I could buy another car for manual sports car fun.
    I have a feeling that a 4.7 Vantage with a manual gear box could probably double up as a comfy motorway cruiser and sporty car, and it's the cheapest of the bunch at 40k. I also think a Db9.2 is a great choice at 60k. That said, the v12 Vantage comes with both the v12 and the manual gear box, so maybe that's the sweet spot?
    I just can't really think of a single reason why I'd go for a Db11 over a 2013 Vanquish, but I assume it's easier to drive. Especially with things like 360 parking camera. By the way, I genuinely do love the way a Db11 looks from all angles.
    I've genuinely been thinking about this far too long and would love to hear your input!
    Thanks.
