    This song just blew me away when I first heard this album. Michael Carke's 16th notes on the hi-hat are really ahead of it's time. It's like a song that would've come out of the Paisley Underground scene in the early '80's.

    Everyone bags on Clarke. Sure. He was very pretty when they started. I get it. I am annoyed with John Mayer for similar reasons. We now all know that the wrecking crew played Tambourine man, but the rest of the first record was Mike. All the live footage of him.. he plays deeply.. sad and thoughtful.. his snare to tom feel was perfect. A real west coast Sunset Blvd. drummer... real gravitas. I maintain Mike was the PERFECT drummer for the early Byrds and the Folk-Rock scene transcending into rock-rock.

Never have I heard anyone say that the records were brilliant except for the drumming. He was a perfect fit for the group and several subsequent bands of note. Had a really keen sense of caustic appraisal for some fellow Byrds who could draw his ire, too. Helluva good dude who came to a tragic end. RIP.

    Michael Clarke's 16th notes on the hi-hat add to the song, maybe even "make" the song. Drummers realize how this changes the whole landscape of the sound on this cut. It has a kind of weird effect actually....

    • @Vito_Tuxedo
      @Vito_Tuxedo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I came here to make a similar comment. Clarke wasn’t a brilliant technician or flawless timekeeper, but his lyrical, almost melodic drumming style was a great fit for the early Byrds. And his 16th-note hi-hat beat in this tune was a genuine innovation, as his 8th-note bass drumming was in other Byrds tunes.

      Both this and Notorious. Technological innovations pointed to a whole new era of music 15 years on, largely coming out of Britain. Lots of in-fighting with The Byrds but their minds and musical creativity were directed to the future. And a shame the whole thing fizzled out on a too long trail of tepid country music.

    Remembering David Crosby born on August 14, 1941. He was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He first found fame as a member of the Byrds, with whom he helped pioneer the genres of folk rock and psychedelia in the mid-1960s, and later as part of the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, who helped popularize the California sound of the 1970s. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Crosby

    I get '90s alt rock vibes from this song, like Gin Blossoms or something. You can hear The Byrds everywhere, all the way to something as mainstream as The Rembrandt's theme for "Friends." This album in particular flies under the radar. Reading about it before listening, I expected another Majesty's Request -- a failed experiment in psychedelia, trying to jell with the Zeitgeist of the times -- but where the Stones' album was largely derivative and unoriginal, this album is innovative and authentic. The Byrds aren't exactly unheralded, but for a band whose influence on the course of popular music was probably only a couple notches below The Beatles, they deserve more attention, even than they've gotten. Their relevance does not end with their second album, nor is it limited to folk rock.

    • @vincentmulier853
      @vincentmulier853 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidwatton Today, McGuinn is a right-wing evangelical nutjob. Back in the mid-1960s, he was wrong about the JFK murder. The lyrics he wrote in "He was a Friend of Mine" were flatly wrong, and they helped to promote (albeit inadvertently) the Warren Commission whitewash. Crosby, on the other hand, was spot-on when he told his audience at the Monterrey Pop Festival that JFK was killed by multiple gunmen, shooting from multiple directions.
      McGuinn insisted on firing Crosby from the Byrds because Crosby liked to cut through the propaganda (which still saturates US society today). McGuinn thought that Crosby spoke too much truth to their audiences, such as when he spoke the truth about the JFK assassination. McGuinn was clearly in the wrong.
      All I'm saying is that Croz was an honest, thoughtful person, who courageously stuck his neck out and tried to use his platform as an artist to speak truth to power. McGuinn, on the other hand, was only concerned about making money and promoting himself.

      Great contribution by David here but "Eight Miles High" is arguably at the creative pinnacle of rock music, not only for that decade of musical riches but for all-time, so influential has it been. Gene Clark, who wrote rings around the other three composers, wrote it, along with Brian Jones, and Gene was magnanimous enough to give Crosby a "writing credit" even though he contributed but one line to the song. Generosity personified given Crosby's continual verbal sniping at the one guy who could've carried the whole group, creatively speaking, all by himself.
