The 80’s what an amazing era 😢
Miss this time when music was real, and talent was pure!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to the Internet "Internet killed the radio star"
Just saw them in concert a few days ago. They still sound incredible in 2023!
❤ WOW really ❤❤❤nice
Was Rod Morgenstein the drummer?
I am going to their concert in Tulsa, Okla. in January, 2024. I can't wait.
Lucky you
I didn't.
One of the great guitar solos.
Dang - didn't realize how great of a vocalist this guy was at the time!!! WOW!!
had a job interview today and this song was playing in the lobby. I knew this was the place I wanted to work.
😂🤘
😂😂💯💯
EPIC 😂😂😂
That is SO rare these days with such crap music around I too would wish to work there!
Did you get the job?
We were sooooo free in the 80s... music was all needed...
I forgot how great this song is.
Ah… memories … the late 80’s was the time to be alive …..
YES IT WAS! Smiling as the memories come back while listening to this.. 😉 Awesome time to be alive
Yeah, all those sheets of music on the floor should've said something to me; he's a fucking music genius!
😂😂
You said it! Best time of my life.

I think of this song as a premonition of the tragic death of Kip's wife in 1996.
@@kryer981 His wife passed? How sad 💔😞

That guitar solo was sick

Its 2020 im a 34 year old black man i was a kid when this came out never knew the name of it but it stuck in my soul for all these years .... Great song
I heard them for the first time about 7 years ago, I was 19. Been in love with their music ever since. Truly underrated
Yea, the problem with this band wasn't the quality of the music. It was the super cheesy lyrics that sounded like they were written by a perpetually horny high schooler. That would go for most music from that generation. The lyrics were generally awful. Bands like Guns N Roses were the exception.
You know it dude!
@@henrythegreatamerican8136 Yeah that's 90% of 80s music. And the 80s is particularly special time for music. What's your point?
Christopher Amons Glad you like the song. No offense but you were 2 years old when this album came out. It “stuck in your soul” when you’re 2?
I was 18 when this song came out in 1989. Takes me back to better times.
Came here to rewatch this vid after the Rick Beato interview...awesome.

Yup. 🎶
Thank you Rick Beato.

OMG! Kip Winger has got to be one of the most handsome men I've ever laid eyes on!!! And I'm 61 and done a lot of travel!! Talk about PERFECTION!!

He is so hot. I named my Camaro after him. When he looks in the camera, I know I’d have been in real trouble, I saw Winger live at the Akron Rubber Bowl in 1988, they were amazing!
The musicianship in this group is unparalleled in the genre.

The perfect lydian ballad
The only other guitarist from then that I would put on the same shelf as Reb.....maybe Nuno Bettencourt? There was some good stuff from other bands but nobody as consistently awesome album after album as these guys. I love my Van Halen of course, but many of Winger songs just go a bit deeper for me.

One of the best guitar solos of the 80''s
This music was such a big part of my life during high school but now at fifty I somehow love it just a little more.
I appreciate this song more than I did when it was out. Great verse/chorus change.
Flippin Winger Rocks. The guitarist was one of the tightest players of that era..way better than the big names. I rode the bus to school 8th grade when this dropped and all us kids on the bus hid Sony Walkmans under our shirts just so we could rock it on cassette until first period. Kids now missed EVERYTHING.
Reb Beach is a big name guitarist!
@Morgan Smith nobody is better than Van Halen on guitar.
Wow, Walkman tape players! Now that brings back memories. I remember wearing out my Def Leppard Hysteria tape just listening in the school bus in the mornings and afternoons!
flippinay-right, wyatt!~
Reb is one hell of a guitar player. Hat's off...
At 63 years old I still love this song so much. I was 31 years old when this came out and I so remember when it did! Really gets me revved up!
Also 63 and recall thinking wow these guys are so talented 👊🏻👍🏼
Not very far behind you. This is an all-time-great song. Obviously rock but so melodic and the chord progressions are pure velvet. Stands out among the same "type" songs of the era.
62 here... and still rockin'
There's nothing like music to take you right back in time.

Thank you for your sincere compliment and your love, I am not complete without you as my fan, for whom I must be very grateful
This song is not "hair" metal or glam, this is a beautifully done prog rock song.
This is hard rock/melodic rock dude!
@@andyrockevo which is basically what a lot of prog rock is, sans the more avant elements.
FAR from prog rock get a life
Yeah, wow, it has that expansive prog vibe right there in the metal. Glad you mentioned it.
The keyboard/ guitar blend is so tasteful.
Winger period one of the most underrated bands of the 80's and today 2021.
Why does everybody abuse the word underrated! Underrated by who? The whining sissies that couldn't handle the best talent ever! The only other class of music that can equal Rick n roll is classical!
Winger wasn't under-rated. The members were top rate and the band was poised to put out at least 2 or 3 major albums. What killed Winger was their timing. Grunge was already on the scene and emerging when this song was released in 1988. Pearl Jam and Sound Garden were already charting when Nirvana entered the scene a year later and wrecked the place for metal. His baggy pants, skull cap and sweatshirts turned inside out absolutely flattened the hair metal scene.🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol "under rated" LMAO like every comment over and over and over and over
It's because Winger as a band went beyond just a long hair metal band. They were underrated because they actually had talent and do even more so now.
Best Guitar playing EVER!
A song made 33 years ago is still better than anything now... Says a lot.
This was 1989

So hard to believe this song came out 30 years ago this summer. Takes me right back to the summer of 1989 when I hear it. The last summer of that amazing decade and all the memories that go along with it will always be in etched in my mind. So glad I grew up in the 80's and this was the music I was listening to. The best of times for sure.
Ronton617 I grew up in the 80s, too. But give me the 70s instead! That decade kicked all kinds of azz!!
The good old days, I Was 15..loved the 80's
My teen years were terrible but the music was great
I Know, Right / Definitely Miss These Years
😭👍🏽
80s producers knew just how to equalize the tracks where every member of the band shined and could be heard. I miss this sort of quality
Yeah...that hasn't happened....since...the eighties...never...again...
80 s for ever in our 80 mind s bring back the 80s sound.
Jesse Oliva I second that
It was pure magic back then. Everything synched so beautifully. I cherish those memories. I loved this band back then, always will.
Yeah, they could really "homogenize" the sound and sometimes you couldn't tell the difference between the drummer and the synth. Good times!
One of the best outros in all of music. I'm a synth guy, and I love the synths in this song. Reb's solo is a masterpiece, without a doubt. This song transcends the genre of its time. A wonderful composition.
I'm both a synth and guitar guy. I'm sure you can imagine what I think of it. The radio stations cut it out, so I didn't discover the outro until later. This guitar solo is a very good example of how to put out an excellent solo without overworking it. So many guitarists want to be fast, and fast is good. But this is melodic and textured without a lot of processors. The entire mix down is clean without being muddy despite the concert hall reverb. That's wasn't easy to do with reel to reel, which had a warmer sound than the processed stuff people are used to these days.
@@dancnkc i'm a drumgod/guitarchamp: but anyone who can pluck out a melody on a keyboard, or learn half-the-chords, deserves all-the-respect, in-some-circles, i guess?
My favorite synth players are those that can belt out impressive lead solos. (This song does have some nice pads though.) Gregg Giuffria was my idea of a synth god. I'd love to watch him and Punk Meadows (guitarist for Angel) trade powerful lead licks back and forth. Check out the Angel video "Feelin' Right' especially around the 2'10" mark ( v=xyM8Hr9PN8I). Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe would do this, too. So could Don Airey, Jimmy Waldo, Keith Emerson, Roger Powell, Tony Banks, and even early (pre Babe) Dennis DeYoung. Giuffria played a Moog System IIIc modular--a synth so fat and powerful that every lead guitarist loathes it!!!!
The synth is perfect. The rhythm too. Classic tune.
Cannons band is awesome synth
Man, Beach's legato tapping...Perfecto! What a guitarist, that ascending run at the end of the main solo gives me chills! Always has. Just pure ecstasy! Some songs will withstand the test of time and surpass even the highest standards...we need the 80's/early-90's back!!!
co-signing on the legato tapping. tis fire
Reb beach is sooo good , went to a seminar he hosted like 13 yrs ago , and to learn from him was a honor , people that say winger sucked , don’t know Shit about music , and making good music
A hint of Allan Holdsworth influence in the first part of the solo.
His guitar playing i think was what really stood out from their band for me. When i got into rock around 89 i was about 8yrs, fast forward to now i gradually got into heavier, darker and more extreme Metal but i still remember some of these great guitarists from the much maligned 80s rock. Truly gifted musicians who just got lumped in with the idea of trendy pop
4:34 right? Love that riff just as the sound is fading out.
Gotta be the most underrated guitar solo of the decade. Launches the song into orbit.

Summed up the best of it. Tons of music from the '80s that did not meet the quality of song cycle or playing of Winger, Mr. Big...one or two others...
One of the most unnecessarily long and perfect guitar breaks. Saw these guys live twice. Love em.
I am a classical music graduate. I'm a rock fan. This is music so put together, so structured and engaging, that I'm completely blown away by it. I just love it!
ok so what...! this is a pop song no where even approaches classical music. what are you talking about?
@@clemclemson9259 I bet you can't even keep stroke for ten seconds while slapping your thighs.
My gf is a studied violinist. She loves classical music, played in known orchestras and with world-renowned bands for Tv shows, is booked for album recordings etc. For a year now, since I showed it to her, you can hear her sing headed for a heartbreak every few days. ^^ I know what you mean. It's a well composed song. Besides that it feels just good. Try the live version from the Arsenio Hall Show.
Absolutely agree, I have classical experience too as a violinist and it just gives you a better appreciation of well composed melodic rock too. As for it being a pop song, um .....no.

All 4 were great studio musicians. They were basically the Harder Rock version of Toto. Such talent!
Whenever it rains, I throw on some Winger. Their ballads fit the scenery so well. I'm a 16 year old teenager in love with 80's. I miss something I was never apart of. Pretty fucking sad if you ask me.
I was very lucky. The best care free years of my life were spent from 1980 to 90. It was the right time, the right town, right friends and the right music. I would sell my soul to the devil if I could go back, I lived your dream and then some. I'm not sure which is worse, dreaming about being there or actually living it knowing I can never return? I do know that you must always live for today, dream about tomorrow and remember all your mistakes from the past while trying to not repeat them. I was 16 in the beginning of that decade, In the end of it I became an adult. I must live by the so called "Grown up" rules now that have so many boundaries and responsibilities I wonder how I remember them all? Someone had to show my kids the meaning of life, respect and how to do the "right" thing so I cut my hair, covered my tattoos, started sleeping at night and be awake during the day, all while dropping my level of alcohol consumption by 90%. Still wondering if I did the right thing...................Lol
it is nice to see the younger generation keeping the legends of rock alive, there needs to be more you out there I'm currently 35, I was born in the early 80s but still wish I could have grown up my teen years in that era...
Cowboy 4000 35 is still considered younger generation to some ;-). Everyone here who digs this song has some ability to be epic...or at least rock out for 5 minutes.

Prog Metal is a stretch…
This song takes me right back to the summer of '89. I was 10 years old and during summer vacation me and my best friends did three activities all summer long: rode our bikes around the neighborhood and down to the creek; played 8-bit Nintendo; and listened to glam metal on the radio and MTV. Sometimes we even took a portable radio to the creek with us.
This one is particularly memorable because every time we heard it and Kip belted out the line "Don't be waitin' for love, cuz I'll be waitin' to ramble on" we'd sing "Don't be waitin' for mud, cuz I'll be waitin' to mow my lawn". Stupid, I know; but we thought it was hilarious back then. I'd give anything to go back for just one of those 12 magical weeks. But I guess that watching these old videos is as close as I will ever get to going back there.
Chef Danger I was turning 9 that summer. great music on the radio compared to today's stuff.
ffilc nikrud I turned 10 on July 5 that summer, so I was 9 for the first month of that summer. I still remember what I got for my 10th birthday lol. I got the Zelda II game cartridge for NES, a ticket to see Batman with my dad, and my very first Sony Walkman. It was then that I started taping songs off the radio to listen to on my Walkman. That's probably why that summer is so significant to me musically. I still had a while to go for my first CD player. I got that for my 13th birthday.
Chef Danger yup, I was 12 and we were doing the same things! Those were the best times!

You can allow the picture to make you happy or sad. That choice is up to you. I've had this same picture for over a year now, and have had this TH-cam Account/Name for over 4 years. I'm not changing it. Its my favorite movie of all time and forever will be. One of my hopes when I made this account was that, when people see the name of the account, they'll potentially think to themselves, "Oh, wow! I remember that movie. I think I'm gonna watch it now." Of course, that hope is somewhat of a longshot, but at the same time doesn't seem unrealistic. Again, I apologize if the picture on my account makes you upset, because that is/was never my intention.

That being said i feel committed to point out that he lost his girl to Rod Stewart. And we all know what Rod Stewart looks like.
@stevko4215: Are u serious??!! That's crazy!!
This song is brilliant in many ways. The continuously changing modes and the subtle transitions between them are layered so well, it's what probably makes the most listeners love this piece of music unconsciously. Starts as a powerful aeolian rock song, drops into a lullaby-like lydian scale at the first bars of the verse and builds up to a 80's dark phrygian mode before the chorus. Kip has even managed to add a twist to the bridge; writing it in mixolydian. I am %100 for glam metal and guys like Kip never failed me.
Its been in his blood and to hear it emerge from this power ballad is no wonder that C. Kip Winger does composes classic music. Of course he still rocks the house!

35 years ago today this gem of an album came out.
Why do people knock Kip's band? This is quality rock and roll that slays any crap on the radio today!
Wingers drummer, Rod Morgenstein is one of the best drummers out there.. while Wingers music certainly doesn't allow him to showcase his ability -- listen to him while playing with Dixie Dregs, -- Night of the Living Dregs, Refried Funky Chicken etc.
A friend of mine actually got to talk to one of the Winger guys (Dummer) after a show at a local club here in Virginia one time. He was drumming for a different band, and my friend actually brought up that episode lol and the drummer confirmed it. He said Winger record sales literally stopped overnight after that Bevis and Butthead episode aired.
Because of the lyrics to "seventeen"...pretty disturbing and creepy by today's standards...good music though 👌 Reb rocks 🎸
Or yesterday for that matter.
Personally i could never figure out why Beavis and butthead could influence anyones musical choices....the sound of their voices made me change the channel before i ever found out they didnt like winger. Had zero effect on me, and i kept right on hunting for new Winger albums in the record store.
Kip Winger was SO fine back in the day.

Actually the chord progressions seem to hint at some influence by prog rock. But you're right in that people listening to that genre were probably overwhelmed by it.
One of the best, if not the best guitar riffs in hard rock! They still sound this good live today:)
+TodayWasAGoodDay9 Check out the version they did with the Colorado Symphony , it´s simply beautiful
Thanks so much. I will certainly check it out.
Ome of the best somgs ever. Kip is soooooo handsome and drop dead sexy. Wonder what he looks like today, lol.
@@suereed7751 Probably bald and wrinkly like all the other old rock stars.
Best Winger song ever...and Great unforgettable video!!
This is my favorite Winger song.
A masterpiece! Winger never got the respect they deserved. I'm giving it to them now. LOVE THESE GUYS!!!! Killer musicians!
Yes they are 🎸
youre gd right they were
They were amazing. We knew back then. They got plenty of respect. This album was nothing less than incredible.
It's interesting to listen to Reb Beach talk about both the middle and outro solo on this song, which were highly acclaimed back then, and rightly so. Indeed, all of them, fantastic musicians and artists in their own right.
@@mwbrada They got respect from you and from some contemporaries, sure. But I mean after that. In the 90s and beyond, they were tormented, shat all over. Did you watch Beavis & Butthead? That lame kid with the Winger shirt? As if those cackling morons Beavis and Butthead (funny as they were) were somehow cooler than these rock stars... No way! Winger freaking ROCKED! And I'm elated to see so many here showing them love. :)
He was the best looking frontman of the 80’s , !!!!!! ❤
I'm not queer but I'd have to agree with you on that one. Lol
this last time he says 'dont you think i feel the pain' is so intense, goes right into my heart
No...when he says " Don't make me hurt you"...Ohhhh LAWWWD
Me too, it still makes my eyes water.
I never get tired of hearing this song...especially seeing/hearing a young Reb Beach wail on his guitar 🎸 The whole band is fantastic
This came out when I was in my teens, such a great song, great band, great times, I’m 51 now why don’t we have music this day and time like this? 🤘🤘
I just recently discovered Winger. What have I been missing? I can't get enough of this song! 💕
Check out the Pull album!
you've missed the entire 80s and early 90s
@@automachinehead not at all. I was and am an avid fan of hair bands, but I just never heard this song before last year. 🤷♀️
