  • This video is a follow up to my last video where I sowed the seeds and began testing out this new LED growlight. The process has been illuminating for me. I will be sharing the progress that my seedlings made since being sowed 10 days ago. In all fairness I recorded this video yesterday and so technically now its 11 days since sowing. I hope you enjoy.

    If there is only one thing that I can recommend you to do before going any deeper into growlights, it would be to install reflective walls. You can even buy a small growbox. In a long run it not only will save you money, by saving light and heat, but also give you better control over the growing environment. Actually, depending on the setup, you would probably need to install PC fans to cool it down. I myself turned a small garage storage shelf into a 5-shelf growbox with mylar walls - each shelf has its individual growlight, fan and even a door.

      you know I actually was using my light bouncer for photography hahah. I noticed a friend of mine has reflective walls in there. I have a few usb fans but haven't found it needed yet as they are still sealed up. im gonna look into it. def need to insulate the shelves under heat mats

    nice seeing your plants. I've had my plants under cool white fluorescent bulbs for 20 years. The cheapest ones you can get and the most ideal light spectrum. No need for expensive grow light fluoros. But when I started there were no led grow lights. I remember when they started coming out with led grow lights and we were all debating about the light spectrum and all that. looks like the technology has matured. that makes it easier to trust what you buy. Btw: I'm zone 7a. my plants stay indoors year round. that way I don't have to acclimate them to the sun each season and I don't have to worry about fungal infections, slugs, birds, ants, etc. Years ago, I lost every single one of my ariocarpi from rust fungus. rust fungus is my main nemesis.

    Hunter, I've been growing cacti int he UK for 45 years. I concluded there was no reason or rhyme to keeping seed pots inside a bag or other similar covering - they are not tropical plants. I started just standing the pots in water in an acceptable level of light until most of the seeds germinated, when temperatures were about 20-25C daytime max. In this way I eliminated problems from humidity, and practically eliminated the need to harden seedlngs off, and also eliminated etialation.

    I mix alcohol with some dish soap, but I dont use on cacti with farina... like Pilosocereus or Melocatus azureus. I definitely need a magnifying glass! Great idea., especially since mealies are hard to distinguish around white wool. I often look closely, and if I see a mealy, I will remove them with tweezers and look at the whole plant closely. Tedious work, but a mudt to keep those mealies at bay. 👍🏼

    I recently got a box of zip lock bags that come in 4 different colors (red, green, yellow, blue) to sow some seeds just as a fun experiment. I want to see if the different color bags do anything at all to the growth of the seedlings. Do I think it will? Probably not but still love to try these things because you never know.

    Nice! Loved the mini greenhouse tour and super jealous, I'm all indoor for 6 months a year and then get to move 1000ish plants in and out each season. I've gone through the rounds with all kinds of lights but have found most work decently as long as distance is considered. Just started some MYR-OR and Taiho amidst many others in this season's huge astro grow but gonna have to seek out some of those Buffalo now.

      thank you. Yeah I would love to do a video with someone that does that - there's a lot of Chicago and New York collectors and growers who are growing primarily in-doors and some exclusively. so cool. moving 1000 plants is fun when its a super short distance - almost just like rearranging - which I do in the greenhouse almost for sport

    Speaking of Strombocactus disciformis, I was able to grow some adult plants from seeds and this year they gave me the first batch of my own seeds. There are two important things if you want to grow them successfully. First, you need to make sure that your soil hardly produces any algae on top - algae will simply suffocate Strombocactus seedlings. Second thing is to use huge amount of seeds - 100 is a bare minimum. Their initial death rate is quite high, but whatever you are able to keep alive for about half of a year (or until they reach 1/5 inch+ diameter), they are relatively easy to grow. One thing I need to mention is that S.pulcherrimus grows way much slower. As for S.corregidore, I will be able to tell more in a year or two.

    • @CactusQuest
      @CactusQuest  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yeah I have had issues with algae just choking them out. so hopefully I can get them to the 6 mo mark this time. I def used a lot of seeds. I mean prob 200 at least. thanks for sharing - I really want to get seeds for the other species of strombo too

    • @SimaShangde
      @SimaShangde 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CactusQuest A this point I'm using a mix of 60% dolomite, 20% zeolite (both 0,5-2 mm grains) and 20% vermicompost. It doesn't require using any fertilizer and in my case it rarely produces any algae, occasionally can grow small amount of moss, which is not an issue.
