- Here's a video about culture shocks that I was not expecting in South Africa as a half Japanese, half American girl from Tokyo!
I've been living in Port Elizabeth, South Africa since the end of January, and I thought it would be fun to share some of the funny/interesting/different things I've noticed about SA so far. Really hope you enjoy! 🤍

You have been here for too long if you know the "mugger's walk." Still the funniest thing to us locals too. It still baffles us why they are all addicted to that walk🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂
Tsotsi walk😂
Talk about looking obvious😂😉
Maybe to intimidate you...,
@@emigrace Hey like your videos and like your accent ....you spot on with your observation ....peacocks at hospitals lol
One thing I’m surprised she didn’t mention is the way our taxis drive like they own the roads 😂
They own the road, the wrong side of the road, the sidewalks, the cops...you name it
@@nicolaasstempels8207..... my car, your car, it's all theirs.
@@anoobplays386 this morning I went into the 'lokasie' (the townships), saw some great examples. Loading and unloading in the middle of a crossing, never mind the robots, blocking all other traffic. Driving on the wrong side of the road in a queue.
And that on a Sunday, when traffic volumes are relatively low.
Edit: and then they go on a very violent strike when they get fined or impounded when they shrug off fines. Taxis are a criminal gang in South Africa, as is their 'union' SANTACO.
@@anoobplays386 It's a free country🤣🤣🤣

"Yoh guys" 😂 You are turning South African so quickly. I love your positive vibe and as a South African, your video is so accurate, I laughed so much.
when she said yoh i knew she was valid
yep yep and yep
@@9thSunSame here 😂 I would describe “Yoh” as an expression of disbelief.
Starting to sound like Tyla
Just stumbled across this video. As a South African it's so refreshing to hear someone talk about the positives instead of all the bad things we hear on the news. Really made my day 🇿🇦
True true true❤
Bro as a South African it's always positive vibes even through loadsheading
❤❤🇿🇦❤🇿🇦❤🇿🇦❤🇿🇦❤🇿🇦
🤣😂this was fun to watch. As a South African I can talk that you’re enjoying the country by the amount of times you’ve said “Yoh” in this video.❤️
"European South African"
you serious right now?
@@asmrgamer6441this is isn't it bru
1. Learn Afrikaans 💀
For real!😂🤣😂🤣
Those yohs!
If your involuntarily saying things like "yoh!" at the end of your sentences😂 you've earned your South Africanness my sister🇯🇵🇿🇦 we love and salute you. We dub you your official SA name... "enhle" pronounced en-tle which means beautiful because ur such a beautiful person.
❤️❤️
This has to be one of the sweetest comments ever. That's why I love my local brothers.
True
I doubt anyone can pronounce that is they don't know the 'hlee' sound.
As a South African living abroad, you made me chuckle so much. Thank you for reminding me of home. At 10:14 you said "Yoh guys" in the perfect South African accent and I think it was completely natural.
exactly what i was thinking!😂
broooooo!
I was thinking the same!😂
No lie I heard that yoh and felt pride😂
😂😂🇿🇦
90% of car guards don’t even guard your car ,they just spawn when you’re leaving
Frr
It depends which town
Literally and then they cup their hands at ur window for a R2
They from all over Africa trying to make a living hereThey are not bad at all!
"As a South African" I am so damn happy you said 'loadshedding" the way a true SA citizen would. Welcome to the madness of our community Emi!

Loadshedding!!!!!!😂😂🇿🇦🇿🇦
she needs to work on the "lekker bru" tho, which could be fixed by informing her that"shot" means the same thing
it was the "gqeberha" for me 😄
Your pronunciation of the 'X' in "Xhosa" is hella impressive. A lot of South Africans can't pull it off that well, to be honest😅 Your effort to learn the culture and language is really admirable
It is really true
It really is impressive!!!
Bruhve u know how to explain other ppls words👌
No
@@NathanVanDerWalt-mv8tq Wat u sayin just commin in and saying no👀
as a South African, growing up at my school we had a peacock called Kevin that showed up one day and never left 😂
We have sooooo many accents for English. Theres people who speak English with a Pedi or Zulu accent, theres the Afrikaans accent, theres the private school accent, theres the regular typical South African accent that we learn in our varsity years, then theres the Coloured accent, theres also just....white people accent, THE INDIANS ACCENT how did we forget, and then the PE accent that sounds semi Australian/Afrikaans. Jeeeeh 😂😂
Private school accent😂😂😂😂
I'm I the only one who read the coloured accent with a coloured accent
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Am I the only one who read each type of accent in that accent?😭
@@CHIEF-T Yeah thats the "Eish, lark bruuu, gwababa could have saved him. Keep it going and keep it flowing laark a waaaaater" 😆😆
Your culture shocks are the funniest I've seen in a while, I mean the phara walk took me out 😂😂😭😭
😂🤍
@@emigrace BTW the word "phara" is used across the country. Originally from "parasite." It was used originally for muggers and it seems to be bleeding off onto beggars too now unfortunately
From all the South African culture shock videos I've seen, this is THE BEST! Thank you for repping us well and your clicks are good
I'm like, not South African, but I'm from Namibia which is super close, but damn did this make me smile, I have alot of family in South Africa✨Thank u so much for having such a lovely, positive reaction in this vid❤
It's wild that you got the clicks with the quickness and people that have lived here forever act like it's impossible but this was one of the greatest videos about SA from an outsider I've seen.
❤️
Everyone in SA can speak a minimum of two languages. Its impressive how well this young woman has integrated into Saffa culture.
As a South African, I can confirm that you got ur facts CORRECT. I appreciate you trying to pronounce our clicks and tongues and you tried your very best to memorize our languages. I don't normally see these kinds of videos on my fyp and this just made my day.
A new sub indeed❤❤🇿🇦
This has got to be the best culture shock video of all TH-camrs from abroad, you nailed all the facts you know exactly what you're talking about and you've only been here 7 months im super impressed you got yourself a subcriber ,not even a single fault information about everything that you mentioned 🙏🙏
Hahahaha appreciate it! I guess I’m surrounded by the right people here hehe
@@emigrace super proud keep up the good we'll support you 🙏🔥if you were in Joburg I would offer you a free tatt as a token of appreciation on behalf of SA🙌
@@emigrace Hello maam, I just want to give you some information. Car guards dont actually guard cars. They are just beggars that the government give jackets so they look professional. Some advice is to try and avoid them as they do nothing and are just a bother. Hope this helps.
Is it weird that this makes me feel oddly patriotic 🤣 so cool to see my country through your eyes 😅
I loved your video. Thank you for doing our country and culture justice and respect.
As a South African, I loved hearing your perspective on our country❤
As a resident Capetonian, studying at UCT, this is actually really cool to see. I'm always amazed how other people see our culture😂 And you got it spot on that each region in South Africa has something different to offer. Glad you are enjoying it here with us ous!😁
We need to run you your citizenship 😅 Gqebega pronunciation 💯 muggers walk 💯 SA humor 💯 Accents 💯❤

@@Kwa_OwenZ P.E. forever !!!
Unfortunately, it’s ridiculously difficult for skilled foreign nationals to earn a citizenship in South Africa 😢 I’ve heard of expert doctors from Europe/Asia who’ve lived in South Africa for more than a decade and still don’t qualify for citizenship. This needs to change so we can attract more talent to our wonderful country. ❤
The mugger's walk had me on the floor😂😂
As proud South African I love your video's, you are so astute, your humor captures us completely. You make a great ambassador. Stay true to yourself and ignore the naysayers below. You are an awesome human!! 🌼 🌷
WoW….what a great video! Thank you so much for choosing South Africa as your home. You are so kind and full of life & fun. I really enjoyed this video…very vibrant, exciting with lots of fun. Regarding purchasing airtime and data, you can do this EASILY via your bank account …keyword is ‘Prepaid’ and access depends on the bank name/type. We love you sooooo much and we accept you as OUR OWN. Your XHOSA NAME IS ‘NOLUTHANDO’ which means LOVING in English.
Oh my word I love my xhosa name!!! ❤️
@@emigraceyah we Noluthando 🎉❤
I'm from Port Elizabeth, it's a really nice and great place to grow up. Some of my best memories are from there. It has become very quiet, it used to have at least some night life.
I just want to express my gratitude for emphasizing more on the positive and joyful side of south africa...i know south africa has its cons and rumors but it has a unique culture, diversity and beauty that can not be seen anywhere else. I do want to leave but its difficult to leave such a diverse ,rich in culture and varity and natural beauty. I will always be loyal to this country's positive aspects and features....Dankie emi...ek hoop jy sal dit baie geniet in Suid afrika verder..❤🇿🇦 # mixed Tanzanian, sowna, dutch and Indonesian❤
rumors?
Let's be honest no one has to lie about whats going on in this country to make it sound horrible, but the culture and nature make up for it.
THE TRUTH HURTS BUT YOU ARE 100% RIGHT
You’re doing so well ❤ can’t believe you’ve been here less than a year
Another South African here, SO great to hear from an interntational visitor that is brave enough to venture outside Cape Town. I am very impressed with the insight you've gotten within only a few months. Your Xhosa clicks are better than mine, to my shame, and your Afrikaans pronouciation is absolutely spot on (I am Afrinaans myself) I hope you get the opportunity to visit other areas in the country.
Nah, it's not venturing away from Capetown, it's venturing close to the townships thats a problem, and also Alberton.
The mugger’s walk is legendary. You know who’s likely to mug you 5 minutes before it happens and you can take countermeasures 😂.. and yes the banter is part of our soul 😩
😂😂 I never thought a muggers walk is funny till now.... But it can also be a pantsula walk not necessarily a muggers walk. Aaand I used to explain my humour to Australians a lot... Thy just didnt get it. Enjoyed your video. Would love to visit Japan my brother lived there fr almost. 5 years
OMG you are so funny!I literally have not seen someone so positive about SA 😂 BTW you know way more than the average English speaking South African on how many languages there are and the Xhosa clicking 😅 you’re energy is amazing 🙏🏼
You are already feeling the vibe..I cannot believe you have been here less than a year, you are so South African! And your Sense of humour is one of the country! Stay positive .. ( and ohh shame you forgot "Shame") we use it genuinely everywhere!
Anyways I'm a Xhosa too, Wakanda Forever 😅
Wakanda forever 😭😭😂
as a South African i think this is the most relatable video i have ever seen.
I am super impressed how much you picked up in the space of seven months! Awesome!
Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha is my home town!! Sometimes it feels like no one ever visits pe because it's so small but it's such a friendly and beautiful city and I hope more expats and tourists visit. Welcome 😊
as a south African who grew up in another country for 14 years and came back to South Africa, I know the culture shock when I see it and you my dear have what i went through. I was never taught about the country or the culture or languages. its hectic here especially with load shedding and the data process XD This Video made my day 100000 times better!!!
Same I was born in Capetown grew up in another country for 16years then I'm back to my country and I'm literally shocked
"In South Africa "we" don't have enough electricity". Kawaii desu!! I wish to go to Japan someday! I'm glad you are enjoying SA! I didn't know about the muggers walk🤭
As soon as I saw this, I clicked. Living in South Africa is an interesting experience and I’m glad I could see someone from another part of the world see it.
I'm south African and this was the 1st culture shock video of South Africa to make me lol😂so hard❤
I'm definitely sharing this video and channel.
Yoh the loadshedding Rugby clip killed me😂😂😂😂
Really great to hear you're enjoying and assimilating well to our country! Looks like you're surrounded by good people, that helps. I hope you have a safe and fun time 😁
Ok first of all, I love your voice. Secondly, you've just made me miss my home country even more; definitely not the load shedding though. 😆😔I currently live in Japan and the differences are overwhelming!
Love that!
How's Japan? Everything works nhe?😂
Japan is lovely; the technology, people are so kind and helpful, but the weather for me is bad though. I think I'm gonna struggle a lot should I decide to go back to Mzansi. Life is so convenient, the people here are definitely living in the future@@bongamkuyana3741
Thanks for showing SA and PE some love. I’m from PE/Gq living in South Korea and I enjoy seeing people appreciate our home country. It would be kinda awesome if you take on learning isiXhosa seeing videos like that would be Great❤️❤️❤️.
I know someone who is trying to teach in SK, how long in advance did you plan for your flight?
SA is awsome!! I am originally from the USA and moved here in December 2021, and I absolutely love it here!! Just like you!
Im at sea and missing home right now. I gotto tell you emi, you made my day😂😂😂
🤍
Love this video...the way you bring across the culture shock is super cool with no disrespect...love it 🇿🇦
It feels so good watching a video where I can see a person genuinely enjoying living here. Like for all the problems we have, it actually is pretty great I must admit.
Also, it's a shame about the beach flooding here in PE I hope you went to the beach plenty before at least
Every country has stupid people, but I think it's better here because the stupid people either dont try to act smart or theyre too stupid to take seriously.
This is probably the most on point video of this kind of thing I have seen.. You usually get people who make very off target attempts, that it ends up sounding like they are talking about a completely different country even to you as a South African; you are purely good even as a person in general, and that is why you were so accurate in this! 🤞😒
What a fun, light-hearted and accurate video! Shot! Or, if you prefer, "shap" ;) You're one of us now!
This video made me even more patriotic! Thanks for making this, And your clicks are great!!
Funniest video I watched today, the mugger’s walk and the loadshedding at the supermarket and on the football game 😅
😂🫶🏼
I've been looking for a video like this one. Trust me sister, you are on point.
I like the fact that you mentioned that in South Africa we joke about everything. That's simply because we have bigger things to worry about, therefore, joking about few gets us through.
One more thing, it seems like you went to the right places to collect your data. Some people would go to Cape Town and conclude that this is how South Africa looks, which is not right because Cape Town is one City that doesn't look like the rest of the country.
Such a comprehensive review of South African culture.
I’m Japanese who will move to Cape Town to study abroad from this October. Thank you for the tips. I really enjoyed this video.
I’m actually interested in learning other languages especially Afrikaans and Xhosa. I’ve heard that many people who lives in Cape Town speak them.
If you need advice, help or suggestions I'm happy to help. Besides the danger you'll find most people are friendly here
All the best with your studies & I'm sure you're going to thoroughly enjoy your time in this beautiful country. I'm going to be studying in the States next year
Only half way through the video and im already tryna subscribe cause this was too accurate 😂😂😭😭😭
Damn, Emi, I swear, you have earnt the stripes of being a South African in a matter of months without formal learning.......👏👏👏👏👏👏
You so cute. South Africa is unique and our slang varies from region to region. That skelm walk is so funny😅.
🌍🇿🇦💚 I’m Asian / Coloured / Muslim / love your videos 💚
I just need to say, as a South-African this video really made my day😂
Hi emi! Just wanted to let you know that in South Africa we have many ways of generating electricity e.g. coal, nuclear etc. It's the company Eskom which supply's our electricity and are currently one big mess as its super corrupted. They don't mantain their infrastructure and little upgrades are done to help improve our electricity grid. Also alot of people have illegal connections "free electricity" and some people slow down their meters, hence using more than what they are paying for and electricity accounts are not always paid. They are tring to stablise the mess that eskom have created but it will take a long time to rectfy. Corruption is the main downfall of our country. Aside from that I really hope you've been enjoying your time here cause there's so many things to do and experience in our country it. It's super nice apart from what the media paints and stereotypes.
You are observant. I am impressed and you captured South Africa well.
How have you picked up this much culture in such a short period of time? Impressive!
She was paying attention for the youtube video.
I was born and raised in the eastern cape in PE, so i'm glad you like my home!!
WOW! You've nailed it! Kudos to you for really delving into some of the nuances of our interesting culture! Your insight and pronunciation is spot-on😉
Love that you chose to live in Gqeberha and interested in learning my language "Xhosa", you came to the right city for that.
I'm loving your personality too, you came with an open mind.
🤍🤍
“ Yoh guys I’m so keen “ hahah that was perfect 😂
Loved watching, thanks so much for an animated presentation and for showing us South Africans how to immerse one's self in different cultures, because truth be told you are mostly likely more diversely cultured in our cultures than most South Africans are!😅
i love how educated you are 🤍🤍🤍🤍
Welcome to South Africa😅 and thank you for this funny video. I always enjoy foreigners view about South Africa.
hey im also from south africa and i highly recomend going to serapa its a safari in johannesburg
I live in south africa 🇿🇦 and I speak English and Afrikaans ofc.
It's surprising that you LOVE South Africa because as a South African I can say that we just wanna stop the loadshedding and the water situation, because here is literally no water in some parts. Like I live in the Free State and we can sometimes go days without water and electricity. (I also love my country, really I do. No hate) I'm very happy that you told everyone our ways because some people think South Africans are only black people and that we don't understand English. (I'm a white South African) thanks for sharing these things! By the way i loved how you said "lekker" haha ❤️ Love you bye!
I already knew the "muggers walk" before you played the video 😂😂😂😂
Hey Emi
Such a cool video, ive had the privalage like yourself of traveling globally and experiancing so many different cultures and countries but I LOVE coming home to SA.
With all our problems I love my Country and Home and no other country around the world compares.
SA is a very special place so that you for your video i had such a good laugh and the muggers walk that was a new thing for me 😂
Stay bless Emi
You have a new sub ❤
As a South African I've never had a problem buying data. Converting airtime to data is rarely done except for technologically challenged older people. You are able to buy data direct from your cellular provider or on your cell phone directly from your banking App and no conversation is necessary.
She was new so it makes sense that she'd have to learn
@@POYSSI totally agree. I'm just setting the record straight that it's not the norm to have a problem with something so simple as that is what it sounded like.
i love your vibe, the mug walk killed me the most and yes they do it just like that, im so dead
PE is my home town! The muggers walk is classic I had a good chuckle.
😂😂😂 you nailed everything.
I’m a South African (Zulu) living in Europe.. I’m always on YT and I just stumbled upon your video and I was like .. let me check out what this girl has to say about SA.
Anyways- you’re a lovely person and you made a great video.
From Botswana and this is very nice to here you talk about SA
The cow part is very realistic, in the Western Cape in a town named Robertson and Parts of Malmesbury you can find cows just wondering around enjoying the place.
Lol i wasn't sure what to expect here, thought few seconds in I'll skip but damn😂😂 i watched till the end. You funny
Lovely to see your perspective and positive vibe. Cape Town is of course quite different so hope you'll spend some time here too?
You'll get used to loadshedding, but honestly it's so depressing. South Africans can't even revolt or march because of this evil act by the government. Running a small business like selling fast foods is a nightmare. Leaving your home and coming back from work with no power is so defeating. On a positive note, great video.
I love how I knew what she was talking about before she even spoke about if also LEARNING AFRIKAANSE IN A PAIN so wish you luck
You made me smile about my own country. Good observation and take 👌
As a South African the way u pronounced certain words was amazing like robat not traffic light impressed me
The loadshedding segment was filmed in the right place.
And FYI those robots haven't been working for years 😅😂.
That's Queenstown (Komani) in a nutshell
Thank you for an awesome positive SA vid. Although we have challenges, as we say "'n boer maak 'n plan"
Hey! I just moved to PE as well from Cape Town! Loving it!
yo I am so happy you said loadshedding as a native South Africa
I like your flow. Just subscribed to your channel. I'm happy share with you on more cultural adventures in and around KZN. 💯🇿🇦
Hi they are so true! You are right! I am Thais living in SA. I love SA like my home.
Glad you're enjoying it here. South Africa has a lot to offer altogether. Unfortunately it's not care free, but if you're careful, you can have a great time.
Bless you for loving SA, so positive to see!!
Why are your accents so accurate 😂. Well done🤙🏼
As a South African, I loved this video! We also have the ability to speak in three different languages in one sentence! 😂
I am South African but have been living in The Netherlands now 5 years...I miss SA but not load shedding LOL...Muggers walk is on point hahaha
I have the same globe XD, i love it when people learn more abt our country and all the good things more then the bad. LOVE THE VID
