One thing about referees, as I had a chat with one referee who retired from professional refereeing just a moment ago: he said that even the referees don´t know what the handball rule is IRL, and the rules have went more and more random and you can interpret any situation to whatever direction. So, make the mental note here: most of the referees do their best, but even they don´t know what they´re supposed to do in certain situations.
