Datsun Fairlady: The ongoing Fairlady legend starts here!

  • Thank you for watching the official video "CG On Air" of the car magazine "Car Graphic". The test drive this time is "Datsun Fairlady" (export name is "Datsun Sports"). It is a famous car that became the roots of the "Fairlady Z" that continues to this day.
    Car Graphic, which was first published in 1962, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. To commemorate this, we started a series of articles in the July issue titled "Back to 1962 - Cars from 1962 to the roads of 2022."
    This is an attempt to grasp the steering wheel of a car that debuted in 1962, in 2022, in a very ordinary city scenery. It is a project aimed at experiencing what has happened and telling the readers.
    Once I got started, I noticed an interesting trend. The writer who test-drives the car (the narrator in the video) changes each time, but almost no one writes that "a car that was born more than half a century ago can't hide its age." Rather, it is not uncommon to conclude that the cars of that time were fresher to drive and even more impressive.
    Even if the technology becomes old, the thoughts of the creators will never get old. Is it because the car was born in the "youthful age of automobiles" that impresses with its purity?
    The Datsun Fairlady that appears this time is an export specification car (left-hand drive car), and was called Datsun Sports locally in the United States. It is a 1970 model with a displacement of 1.6 liters, and the owner is Mr. Kazuo Hioki, who has long led Nissan motor sports. He is currently the chairman of the NPO Japan Motor Sports Promotion Organization. He himself appears in this video and talks about his thoughts on the Datsun Fairlady.
    Sixty years after its debut, what kind of suggestions does the Datsun Fairlady give us? Let's head out into the city with auto journalist Naoki Imao for a drive.

    いいですね。ラダーフレームなんですね。今でも通用するこのデザインだと思います。お二人も話していましたが、また造って欲しいと言うのに賛成です。

    Beautiful example of a 1970 SPL 1600. This last version had collapsible steering column and (most likely, depending on serial nr.) the much improved recirculating ball steering. A great forerunner to the beloved HLS30 240Z. Well done video!

    出始めた頃の時代を考えると、ものすごくモダンでお洒落なオープン2シーターだったんだなと感心しますね🤗そして現在でもオーナーさんの愛情が伝わるコンディションのDATSUNフェアレディ🤩!ノンサーボ、ノンパワステ等、何もないかもしれないけど、逆に操ってる感は高いんだろうなぁ🤩!これを乗りこなす人ってメチャクチャかっこいい👍!

    これはカワ格好いい、'62年デビューだからランチア・アウレリアB24や、アルファロメオ・ジュリエッタスパイダーの影響ありますねー。
    現代技術で安全性の確保と、可愛いスタイリングの両立で、 「レトロなヘリテージ」 を復興させて欲しい。それって日産は得意でしょ !?

    初代シルビアベースSP310。三人横乗りですね。SR311はハードな硬派だけど、これはけっこうメロウなオープンでしたね。

    もし日本の軽自動車規格がフィアット500ぐらいの大きさだったら、S660やコペンやカプチーノはどんな車だったかなと想像したりします。
    海外でそれらを売ったらウケそう
