Written in memory of his young daughter who died shortly after giving birth… A towering masterpiece !

I've heard this symphony in live performance perhaps six or seven times in a variety of venues (including Chichester Cathedral, in 1998). No matter who the conductor or the orchestra, and no matter what the peculiar acoustics of the venue might be, the orchestration is so immensely skilful that the work always "comes off" in terms of instrumental balance and colour.
Quite apart from that, the music is just so good. This is a work (like most of Schmidt's music) that is "better than it can be played".

Superb piece - still woefully underperformed - and a wonderful recording. Particularly fine solo trumpet and horn playing and overall ensemble. To my ears almost as good as the legendary Mehta Vienna recording but not quite as powerful in the middle section of the slow movement, and the strings / horns haven't quite got the heft of Vienna. Thank you so much for making the score available.

Wow. I can't recall having ever heard this work before, but it is SPECTACULAR. Thank you for your hard work setting up this video and others!

If you like Schmidt 4 you should also like Schmidt 3 (his personal favourite among his own symphonies): th-cam.com/video/bf8UvZxg9fo/w-d-xo.html

I listened to this symphony a couple of years ago in a trip to the northern part of Argentina to a place called Iruya, that is kinda like I would picture Valhalla to be, the music and the images melted in my head together

Voluptuous rich decadent Húngaro-style....pure Schmidt. It's always a love affair....from San Agustinillo!

His output was not especially large, but it is of extremely high quality: 4 symphonies, a set of orchestral variations, two concertante piano works (commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein and written for piano, left-hand), two operas, an oratorio, two string quartets, three quintets for piano (left-hand), strings and, in the latter two works, clarinet, plus some very important organ music. George Sollish introduced me to this symphony. He is a gearbox designer and mathematical logician from Baldwinsville.

Would match nicely with Hitchcock' s psychological complexity.

It's intriguing to imagine what film scores Franz Schmidt might have produced if, like Korngold, he had been driven out of Vienna and into Hollywood.
I agree that this later music of his has a degree of psychological complexity (caused by the extreme chromaticism and pervasive dissonance) that would have suited Hitchcockian subjects, but his earlier vein of music - the First Symphony, Notre Dame - would have been highly suited to swashbucklers like "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (even if it's now hard to imagine this without the Korngold score). Among other things, Schmidt was a master of the fanfare and the flourish!

Just shows it is not necessary to write in all kinds of fancy time signatures, in the end it all sounds in 3/4 or 4/4 in rubato

There is plenty of rhythmic complexity in this music.

So far, the Mehta is the Gold Standard for Schmidt 4.
