Some of effects legend Rick Baker's most memorable work was in the Men in Black series, where his studio designed and created the fantastic alien creatures featured in the films. We chat with Rick about the practical fabrication of the memorable worm aliens, and a giant bug animatronic that never made it to screen. So many wonderful stories!

Rick baker's work is amazing. Every prop in this auction is a dream to have, but the worm holding José is the winner for me.
So instead of using this fantastic Edgar bug they went with a disastrous CGI monster!!!! Brilliant move there producers of MIB...brilliant!!
I should say studio heads and not producers ...but I'm sure they're not completely innocent.
I wouldn't say the final product was disastrous at all. The CGI holds up remarkably, and the monster's design actually looks more insect-like, with antennae, mouthparts, and a third pair of legs. I actually love both designs but the original animatronic looks perhaps a bit too dragon-like.
@@TheBlackLobo I agree. Both have their merits but I'm happy with the CG bug.
@@MegaCrocosaurus92 Agree. For me this CG bug looks realistic even today. Awesome graphics I should say.

Ah Rick Baker. He's done so much for movies. Nice to see a vid on him. I would love to have that animatronic bug from MIB!
I would want ANY of the MIB collections, absolutely loved those movies when it came out. Probably the prop that stood out the most was Mikey's animatronic insert head. Would love to have that!
I would definitely get one of the skeleton rigs from Gremlins, it's just so cool how to move around! Too bad the expected price range is far beyond my budget.

Just bam "Rick's going to join me to talk about some of the collection." I almost fell out of my chair.
One of my favorite things I saw in the catalogue was the Grinch suit from the Ron Howard film. It may not be a great movie, but for my family it's a classic that acts as a bellwether that Christmas is coming. And that suit and makeup has such an incredible sculpt!
I would want a prototype Gremlin. I love Rick's design

It's oddly disappointing to hear about all the behind-the-scenes battles.
The Elder Chimp Mask (#293) looks so amazingly detailed. I'd love to have that in my collection.
Item 196: The cutout guns from MIB.
Because they were used for size reference when creating creatures, it's like buying the tool that the artist used, which to me, is really cool!
The Mechanical Bat Gremlins Puppet would be amazing to own, Gremlins are truly the creation of nightmares. Love Rick Baker's work.
Oh my gosh, everything from the Wolfman movie! I absolutely loved how they kept classic look of the wolfman! I am a huge werewolf fan!
Of course when you said that you'd be giving away the unpainted mask, I almost lost it! It would be quite the dream to own such an awesome piece of the Wolfman effects production.

346. Shark Guy Mask and Gloves;
183. Devil's Advocate Bearded Demon head; and
116. Gremlin Skeleton Puppet SFX Rig.
Besides they being in my top favorite movies, they are wicked cool..
Aww Bakers Bug was beautiful! I would have much preferred that over the one we got; always thought that was too huge.
I wish I could buy everything and open a museum. My personal favs are anything from gremlins 2, Harry and the Hendersons or an my very own Edgar suit!
I would love one of the Locker Alien Costumes from Men in Black II. Would be so great to wear to a convention, for the few people that get it.
I can't get enough of these Rick Baker videos. If money [and space] was no option, I would buy that Full size 'Big Joe' Head skin, chest, arms and hands, from Mighty Joe Young.
The Gremlin script would be a great item to have. It'd make a great conversation starter, or even an actual gremlin sitting in the corner.
There's so much I want. Fourth draft of the rocketeer one of my favorite movies, santa costume from the grinch, MIB script, Frozen statue from batman, planet of the apes helmet the list goes on and on haha
I would love the Daffy Marionette! That thing is so cool!
I would want lot 130-Mohawk Puppet or any of the ape underskulls, I love seeing how they were put together.
That Hellboy Right Hand of Doom Maquette would be an amazing display piece with my Big Baby replica
Anything animatronic would be awesome. #12 the extended ape hands are pretty cool or #30 the mechanical puppet arms. It would be great to own a practical effect like that to emulate and learn from.
Hey! This is so cool! When I was looking through my favourite was the Flying Monkey (lot 32) especially because it was something made for his studio and that made it special to me!
most want to own that grinch costume, but that wolf an mask looks awesome as well
So much history on sale in the auction. I think I'd want the Daffy marionette. Sure there are more significant things like the amazing stuff from Thriller and Moonwalker but Daffy is adorable and would display well.
For me, HANDS DOWN, any of the items from "The Gremlins" movies would be incredible to own! If only!!!
I have been a fan of rick baker and it would be a dream come true to have the cartoony gremlin.

Hell Boy's right hand of doom mock-up! The coolest hand that the coolest character has and the prop I would most like to own, gotta love del Toro as well ;)
If I could have a magical wish for any item from the Rick Baker auction, I'd be tempted to get one of the animatronic apes be ause Mr. Baker has always made the most amazing apes to ever appear on the silver screen. But the Redgick maquette scupt from MIB is simply amazing. The beautiful form and implied movement of the sculpt are simply wonderful.
I think my favorite would be Lot #: 203 - Mikey’s Human ‘José’ Head, Post and Worm Guy. Awesome work!
I would absolutely love to own an Alien Chestburster Puppet. I've often considered sculpting, molding and casting my one, but to own an original would be just fantastic.

I have no hesitation, if I could get just one of the peices from the auction, I'd want one of the Gremlins. Spike is cool, but there is a very nice Mohawk puppet that'd be awesome to own.
This whole collection is amazing, thanks for showing it to us! I'd love to own one of the Gremlins puppets, or better yet that right hand of doom, if only I had that kind of money. And the Gargoyle maquette is a thing of beauty.

I'd love the mechanical bat gremlin puppet. the moment when it falls in concrete and becomes a gargoyle is my favourite moment in gremlins two.

This might sound strange but looking through the catalog I've grown attachment to those worm guys puppets. The design of the alien is absolutely fantastic I only wish I could afford to bid on it!
I would want lot 80: The Prototype Gremlin Puppet. That movie meant alot to me as a kid. One of the first scary movies i saw as a kid and a gatewaydrug into the world of FX movies and cinema in general.
I looked through the catalogue after the last video and they have a couple of riddler masks that I would love. But I really just want it all, and like a place to keep it.

I always loved Mighty Joe Young as a kid. The full head from that would be cool to have.
I'd like to own several of the mechanical Gremlins, the marionettes, the hatching puppets and the servo operated Mogwais as well from Gremlins 2. They are all amazing pieces of art! The prototypes are cool too. :)

I love prop store so much, they have the best stuff, I would want is any of the Blade Runner miniature landscapes or Archer's head from Small Soldiers.
For me it would have to be the mechanical arm from Harry and the Hendersons. I use to love that growing up, and I would get to terrify people with it.

Cool and lifelike and Rick Baker is a genius and I hust love the movie men in black 2.
Being an up and comer in the fx industry, Rick Baker has been such an inspiration to me and my work so picking a favorite piece of his would be like asking a parent what their favorite child is! But if I had to choose I would probably say the Ratboy prosthetics since that was Rick's first job as an fx artist or anything for American Werewolf in London since I watched that movie on repeat ever since I was a (littler) kid!
I don't have tons of space, so something not too big to display on a shelf would be awesome. The first contact alien mask and gloves or something like hellboys doom hand.
The original puppet version of Edgar looked more alien-like which I prefer, but I guess they wanted to go for a more insect-like appearance.

Ridiculous how some suit or the producer or something probably didn't like it from the beginning, but waited all the way to the day of the shoot before saying no. Crazy business
