I have some information about the image included in Puzzles and Dragons Z. The character is named ムラ神さま (murakamisama), and is a character of Corocoro Comics in Japan. The character is meant to be the chief editor of the comics. The happy dragon is a mascot of Corocoro. Puzzles and Dragons comic was published by Corocoro. They even had collaboration dungeons in Puzzles and Dragons Z where you fought Corocoro mascots that you could get by typing in a code included in their monthly magazine. It may have originally been planned to be included in those dungeons.
I love how we go right from talking about unhealthy obsession over body image to an ad for a product that stresses meticulous micromanaging of one's own body image.
While I agree that people shouldn't feel like they have to shave, should shaving products be barred from advertising because of that? It's a fine line to balance for sure. Research has shown that fat shaming does not work and even produces the opposite result. And I think that being overweight is a much more significant problem than hairyness is in terms of health and body image. And therefore the reaction to it should be proportional. That's why viewing shaving products as a negligible problem for now is acceptable in my opinion. But I wouldn't mind shaving products being barred from advertising their products similar to cigarettes here in Germany.

Shaming someone for anything doesn't help with it really. Directly confronting people in a personal, accusational manner automatically puts them on the defensive and their brain will come up with anything to refute what you say. They will instinctually go in the opposite direction of what you're saying, it's just human. Fat shaming specifically puts them in a mindset that strengthens their already existing issues getting in the way of starting their weight loss. Now of course, supporting the idea that there's nothing wrong with being fat is bad too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and being obese isn't bad because of your appearance, but your heart's opinion doesn't make it pump blood any easier. It is known that AlphaDream went of business due to debt, but they had had multiple successful releases not that long ago. I find it hard to believe Nintendo wasn't in talks with them at the time, I would assume they didn't "leave them out to dry" as much as have concerns with investing in them. At that point then its only speculation what led them to not go for it.

Let's be honest, the 3DS is the ultimate DS. It has access to the entire DS and 3DS library and sans a few specific titles like the Guitar Hero DS games and accessories that need the GBA port on the original DS, can play pretty much every game and use every feature the DS brought along.

Alpha Dream didn’t deserve to close down. Bowser’s Inside Story was just a TERRIBLE game to remaster. The artwork was already beautiful and some of the best on the DS. The 3DS was backwards compatible with the original. There was no reason to choose THAT game out of every game in the franchise. I’m sad Alpha Dream closed but that just seemed like a really stupid decision.

The remake being Bowser's Inside story had nothing to do with it, overall the reception was still good from those who played it. The problem was the 3DS. When Superstar Saga's remake was announced, people already questioned why it wasn't on the Switch (which had just come out that year.) The Bowser's Inside Story remake came out when the Switch was approaching two years old and the 3DS was pretty much on life support (despite Nintendo still trying to claim the Switch hasn't replaced it.)
I feel like it still played a factor in its poor sales. Look at the art from the DS original and the 3DS remaster. I personally think the 3DS remaster looks bad in comparison to the original. There’s also the fact that The original was backwards compatible with the 3DS. That wasn’t the case with Superstar Saga. You could argue not porting it to the switch hurt it more but I don’t think that’s the case.

It's just like how when Superstar Saga remake was announced and people cried and moaned about how it looks "generic" had no "charm" and was "inexpressive," even though that's nothing but utter bullshit and the remake still did fairly well even though most people had moved onto the Switch. The backwards compatibility made owning the remake of BiS feel redundant if you already had the original, especially considering the gameplay wasn't changed nearly as substantially as in Superstar Saga's. At the end of the day, it was releasing on the Switch in 2019 that killed it, 3DS games released around this time generally did very poorly and it didn't help that you could play the original on 3DS, meaning a lot of people didn't see the point in upgrading if they already had it. Its failure had pretty much nothing to do with "muh artstyle" and any sales lost because of it were negligible at worst.
I feel like the fact that you could still play the original on a 3DS just fine kinda meant a lot of people didn't see the point in it. Especially since a lot of people prefer the pre-dream team artstyle too.
as a game artist, i always find it funny when you guys are like "we don't know why the developers did [some art-related cut corner]," like the mm moon kids' faces. it's because doing something else would've been more work lmao. for the 64 version, why spend the time drawing a nice-looking face if no one will see it? for the 3ds version, if you already have a perfectly good head model with exactly the hair, skin tone, ears, etc that you need for a separate character who will never show their face, just use that! i myself have used the same pair of boots from four years ago on three separate character models now and i'm certainly not stopping any time soon. it's not an easter egg, it's just the path of least resistance ^^;;

The M&L series being one of my favourite franchises and seeing Alpha dream go out really hit me hard in the feelings. I own the originals and the remakes and fun fact: Bowser Inside story was actually my first game that I owned (for me alone) and I actually got it by finding a lost DS in a shopping cart at K-mart, a couple of years later I find the person that lost it at middle school.
I really wished that DYKG was more clear about the Wii Fit controversy in the video. So many people keep making jokes about how the 10 year old kid must have been fat and the parents are ignoring her weight problem without realizing that the game called a kid who was not obese obese, killing her self-esteem. The BMI measurement used in the game is not perfect, especially when determining if kids are obese or not. The parents were concerned that other kids could be told they were obese when they really weren’t, making kids feel ugly.
For real. The Wii Fit board was just the most passive-aggressive jerk and that's fine if you're an adult, but a kid is not going to take it well. Even if the kid was fat, this thing wasn't going to help. But then, of course, the Wii Fit uses BMI to measure even though muscle weighs more than fat, so it can't possibly accurately gauge body shape, so if the kid isn't even actually obese but keeps being told that she is, well, that's a certain mood killer to say the least.
Even if the BMI measurements were perfect, it's generally agreed that BMI is meaningless for children, anyway. It already has significant issues when used for adults, but at least it will still give you results in the right ballpark. However, it means diddly squat when attempting to use the measurements on someone who isn't fully grown.
I find it ironic that the first thing spoken about is a body image issue in a game then it cuts to Manscaped. Lets tell you men, that your body image can be better with Manscaped!

While I know that the 3DS version of Bowser's Inside Story sold amazingly poorly, it was how I experienced that game, so I honestly don't regret buying it at all

I hate when people think in extremes like that. Like, of course looks aren't everything. But if it makes you feel better to take care of yourself, that's fine. Same with the whole body image thing. Just because you're overweight, doesn't mean your worth as a person is diminished, or that you don't deserve love and happiness or anything like that. But it also doesn't mean losing weight isn't still generally a good thing. There's a healthy middle ground there. Loving yourself unconditionally and living a healthy life aren't mutually exclusive.

3D platformers in general were in short supply during most of the 3DS's lifespan. When the genre began to be revitalized with indie titles like A Hat in Time, Yooka-Laylee, and various others... The 3DS was almost gone and pretty weak for those modern titles. Heck, by the time they released the Switch had already been announced and released.
3d Land was such a great introduction in my opinion, too bad third parties hardly tried their hand in the genre asfter seeing some of what you could do.
The irony of remaking Bowser’s Inside Story over Partners in Time because of sales numbers only to have that remake be the worst selling Mario game in history is so delicious to me, Partners in Time is so good and deserves so much more love than it gets
As much as I love Nintendo it's really frustrating to see how they have deliberately sabotaged the Mario RPG games. The fact that the RPGs are not allowed to include new or unique characters any more despite the fact that the mainline platformer games have no such restrictions is extreme disrespectful to the RPG teams. I truly believe that Alphadreams and the Mario & Luigi series could have still been going strong today if it where not for their weird and completely arbitrary restrictions.
Alphadream were near bankruptcy because of mismanaged financials and each game since they got on the 3DS selling less than the preceding one. Nintendo's rules, dumbas they are, didn't really have much to do with their bankruptcy as far as I know. As far as I know, they weren't even in effect during the time of Alphadreams worsening financial state.

However the 3DS is the point where Nintendo introduced their baffling restrictions on the RPGs (Paper Mario Sticker Star to be precise) I can't 100% remember if it affected Dream Team Bros, I seem to remember it did, it definitely did affect Paper Jam.

Paper Jam would have been in development during Sticker Star since it released December 2012 and Dream Team released in July 2013. Even then, the Wii U port didn't sell well compared to the original despite having a small new detail that goes with the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild that wasn't on the Switch version for some reason..

Ah yes, I'm aware BIS DX sold poorly. Every video covering the game seems to hone in on that. I'm not going to be allowed to forget that :'( I loved the remake and I had high hopes for the series going forward. Even though the 3DS was dead, I think it could have sold more if Nintendo gave it more serious marketing and released it on a date where it wasn't in direct competition with NSMBUDX. By the way that game is a prime example of popularity not necessarily equaling quality. In my opinion BIS DX deserved success a lot more than NSMBU DX. It had real effort put into remastering all the graphics and adding an entire new story. NSMBU just added a Toadette model and called it a day. And then it absolutely trampled BIS DX on release day. I'll just say that everyone who slept on BIS DX did a good job of sealing AlphaDream's fate. We may never see another M&L game now, and all the fun memorable characters unique to the series will be forever in limbo considering Nintendo's hate boner for using RPG characters outside RPG games. :'(

I love my 3DS. I owned it for the past 6 years and enjoyed many games like Smash 4 and Shovel Knight. However, I feel AlphaDream brought their demise to themselves by remaking a game that didn't need a remake. They should've focused on developing a new Mario & Luigi game for the Nintendo Switch after remaking Superstar Saga.

Nintendo stopped producing them, most people moved onto the switch, and no one sells them anymore. The pandemic might also have accelerated the scarcity of the console and its games with how many people all over were stuck at home dealing with stay-in-place orders and lockdowns.
extra trivia on Priam: his Japanese name, Paris, was the original / beta name for who would later go on to become Ike. It's likely this is the main reason why Awakening's paralogue character was named Paris in the original version, rather than the mythological reference, but of course it then loops around due to the fact that you could try to put said reference onto Ike. And of course the localization team was aware of the mythological aspect when they renamed him.

So if you just acknowledge you find someone hotter one way, that's fine, as long as you leave it up to them to make their own choices. I'm fat, so I'm glad when people enjoy that about me, but I still acknowledge it's an unhealthy way to live. I wouldn't choose to stay fat my whole life, just to appease another person.

I agree that PiT needed it more. Barely anyone played it because of various things, like people complaining about the special attacks being consumable items (though that really wasn’t an issue...). They missed out on a great game with it. A remake could have brought more attention to it. PiT being a DS game also wouldn’t have gotten in the way as much as BiS.

Pretty sure Bowser's inside story 3DS remake has sold just as poorly as the poorly timed Dillon's Dead Heat Breakers. Both great games tho to be honest. Bowser's Inside story was perfect that it didn't need a remake. RIP Alpha Dreams. There's an extra detail to the Priam/Paris story: "Paris" was Ike's work-in-progress name during development (which was likely due to its relation with "Hector", since Ike's character was largely fashioned after the fan-favorite Hector).
The children having the Happy Mask Salesman's face is a reference to a line one of them says if you complete his dungeon and give him masks to leave. He asks Link if he will become a mask salesman when he grows up, implying the Happy Mask Salesman came from the moon as well and that the children will grow up to be like him.
While I admit that partners in time should’ve definitely been the one to get the remake, as it not only needed more of a graphical upgrade but even could’ve used some gameplay improvements compared to Bowser’s inside story, that doesn’t mean that the inside story remake is bad, I still say based purely on audio and visuals it’s an all-around improvement over the original, even if not by much. While I’m still glad it exists, partners in time should’ve definitely been the one to get the remake treatment, it was already far behind bowser’s inside story in terms of gameplay and presentation. and unlike superstar saga, whose remake is leaps and bounds better than the original in every department, the bowsers inside story remake is only marginally better than the original. While with superstar saga I see no value in the original beyond nostalgia, I find it completely understandable if someone prefers the original bowser’s inside story more. I doubt that bowser’s inside story’s poor sales were the sole reason for alpha dream closing, but I also don’t think them remaking partners in time instead would’ve kept them around today. The point is, play the DX versions of the games if you haven’t, they’re great. and they are pixel art h e a v e n .
the og superstar saga has its own feelings the og and the ex feels like different takes on the same game rather than dx being just a remake I wouldnt recommend any of them over the other but rather recommend the fact that I wasnt board of playing both games proves that they different enough to justify playing them both

I have some information about the image included in Puzzles and Dragons Z. The character is named ムラ神さま (murakamisama), and is a character of Corocoro Comics in Japan. The character is meant to be the chief editor of the comics. The happy dragon is a mascot of Corocoro. Puzzles and Dragons comic was published by Corocoro. They even had collaboration dungeons in Puzzles and Dragons Z where you fought Corocoro mascots that you could get by typing in a code included in their monthly magazine. It may have originally been planned to be included in those dungeons.

While I agree that people shouldn't feel like they have to shave, should shaving products be barred from advertising because of that? It's a fine line to balance for sure.
Research has shown that fat shaming does not work and even produces the opposite result. And I think that being overweight is a much more significant problem than hairyness is in terms of health and body image. And therefore the reaction to it should be proportional. That's why viewing shaving products as a negligible problem for now is acceptable in my opinion.
But I wouldn't mind shaving products being barred from advertising their products similar to cigarettes here in Germany.

@@TwilightBinder Shaming isn't the right word. I wish it was that easy, but shaming people for being fat doesn't encourage them to lose weight. Shaming someone for anything doesn't help with it really. Directly confronting people in a personal, accusational manner automatically puts them on the defensive and their brain will come up with anything to refute what you say. They will instinctually go in the opposite direction of what you're saying, it's just human. Fat shaming specifically puts them in a mindset that strengthens their already existing issues getting in the way of starting their weight loss.
Now of course, supporting the idea that there's nothing wrong with being fat is bad too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and being obese isn't bad because of your appearance, but your heart's opinion doesn't make it pump blood any easier.
This video explains what I'm trying to say much better and with visual aids. Take what Dr. K says here and apply it to a conversation about someone's weight and you'll see much better results than with shaming them.

It is known that AlphaDream went of business due to debt, but they had had multiple successful releases not that long ago. I find it hard to believe Nintendo wasn't in talks with them at the time, I would assume they didn't "leave them out to dry" as much as have concerns with investing in them. At that point then its only speculation what led them to not go for it.

Let's be honest, the 3DS is the ultimate DS. It has access to the entire DS and 3DS library and sans a few specific titles like the Guitar Hero DS games and accessories that need the GBA port on the original DS, can play pretty much every game and use every feature the DS brought along.
Except that the 3DS does not display DS games correctly, making is suboptimal and thus not the preferred way of playing.
You can change it with a button input when you load up a game. Same as with the GB games on the virtual console.

Alpha Dream didn’t deserve to close down. Bowser’s Inside Story was just a TERRIBLE game to remaster. The artwork was already beautiful and some of the best on the DS. The 3DS was backwards compatible with the original. There was no reason to choose THAT game out of every game in the franchise. I’m sad Alpha Dream closed but that just seemed like a really stupid decision.

The remake being Bowser's Inside story had nothing to do with it, overall the reception was still good from those who played it.
The problem was the 3DS.
When Superstar Saga's remake was announced, people already questioned why it wasn't on the Switch (which had just come out that year.)
The Bowser's Inside Story remake came out when the Switch was approaching two years old and the 3DS was pretty much on life support (despite Nintendo still trying to claim the Switch hasn't replaced it.)
I feel like it still played a factor in its poor sales. Look at the art from the DS original and the 3DS remaster. I personally think the 3DS remaster looks bad in comparison to the original. There’s also the fact that The original was backwards compatible with the 3DS. That wasn’t the case with Superstar Saga. You could argue not porting it to the switch hurt it more but I don’t think that’s the case.

It's just like how when Superstar Saga remake was announced and people cried and moaned about how it looks "generic" had no "charm" and was "inexpressive," even though that's nothing but utter bullshit and the remake still did fairly well even though most people had moved onto the Switch.
The backwards compatibility made owning the remake of BiS feel redundant if you already had the original, especially considering the gameplay wasn't changed nearly as substantially as in Superstar Saga's.
At the end of the day, it was releasing on the Switch in 2019 that killed it, 3DS games released around this time generally did very poorly and it didn't help that you could play the original on 3DS, meaning a lot of people didn't see the point in upgrading if they already had it. Its failure had pretty much nothing to do with "muh artstyle" and any sales lost because of it were negligible at worst.

I feel like the fact that you could still play the original on a 3DS just fine kinda meant a lot of people didn't see the point in it. Especially since a lot of people prefer the pre-dream team artstyle too.
as a game artist, i always find it funny when you guys are like "we don't know why the developers did [some art-related cut corner]," like the mm moon kids' faces. it's because doing something else would've been more work lmao. for the 64 version, why spend the time drawing a nice-looking face if no one will see it? for the 3ds version, if you already have a perfectly good head model with exactly the hair, skin tone, ears, etc that you need for a separate character who will never show their face, just use that! i myself have used the same pair of boots from four years ago on three separate character models now and i'm certainly not stopping any time soon. it's not an easter egg, it's just the path of least resistance ^^;;
Like why would a team spend extra time on faces when MM had a REALLY short development cycle. Much rather them working on the cool stuff like the UFOs plot or Anju and Kafei storyline

The M&L series being one of my favourite franchises and seeing Alpha dream go out really hit me hard in the feelings. I own the originals and the remakes and fun fact: Bowser Inside story was actually my first game that I owned (for me alone) and I actually got it by finding a lost DS in a shopping cart at K-mart, a couple of years later I find the person that lost it at middle school.

I really wished that DYKG was more clear about the Wii Fit controversy in the video. So many people keep making jokes about how the 10 year old kid must have been fat and the parents are ignoring her weight problem without realizing that the game called a kid who was not obese obese, killing her self-esteem. The BMI measurement used in the game is not perfect, especially when determining if kids are obese or not. The parents were concerned that other kids could be told they were obese when they really weren’t, making kids feel ugly.
For real. The Wii Fit board was just the most passive-aggressive jerk and that's fine if you're an adult, but a kid is not going to take it well. Even if the kid was fat, this thing wasn't going to help. But then, of course, the Wii Fit uses BMI to measure even though muscle weighs more than fat, so it can't possibly accurately gauge body shape, so if the kid isn't even actually obese but keeps being told that she is, well, that's a certain mood killer to say the least.
Even if the BMI measurements were perfect, it's generally agreed that BMI is meaningless for children, anyway. It already has significant issues when used for adults, but at least it will still give you results in the right ballpark. However, it means diddly squat when attempting to use the measurements on someone who isn't fully grown.

But it also doesn't mean losing weight isn't still generally a good thing. There's a healthy middle ground there. Loving yourself unconditionally and living a healthy life aren't mutually exclusive.

For a system with “3D” in the name, there were way more 2D platformers than 3D ones... It’s just a missed opportunity in my opinion.
3D platformers in general were in short supply during most of the 3DS's lifespan.
When the genre began to be revitalized with indie titles like A Hat in Time, Yooka-Laylee, and various others... The 3DS was almost gone and pretty weak for those modern titles. Heck, by the time they released the Switch had already been announced and released.
3d Land was such a great introduction in my opinion, too bad third parties hardly tried their hand in the genre asfter seeing some of what you could do.

The irony of remaking Bowser’s Inside Story over Partners in Time because of sales numbers only to have that remake be the worst selling Mario game in history is so delicious to me, Partners in Time is so good and deserves so much more love than it gets
I completely agree. LOL they skipped the best one and had to pay the price. It didn't make any sense to remake BiS before PiT.
As much as I love Nintendo it's really frustrating to see how they have deliberately sabotaged the Mario RPG games. The fact that the RPGs are not allowed to include new or unique characters any more despite the fact that the mainline platformer games have no such restrictions is extreme disrespectful to the RPG teams. I truly believe that Alphadreams and the Mario & Luigi series could have still been going strong today if it where not for their weird and completely arbitrary restrictions.
Alphadream were near bankruptcy because of mismanaged financials and each game since they got on the 3DS selling less than the preceding one. Nintendo's rules, dumbas they are, didn't really have much to do with their bankruptcy as far as I know. As far as I know, they weren't even in effect during the time of Alphadreams worsening financial state.

Paper Jam would have been in development during Sticker Star since it released December 2012 and Dream Team released in July 2013. I loved the remake and I had high hopes for the series going forward. Even though the 3DS was dead, I think it could have sold more if Nintendo gave it more serious marketing and released it on a date where it wasn't in direct competition with NSMBUDX. By the way that game is a prime example of popularity not necessarily equaling quality. In my opinion BIS DX deserved success a lot more than NSMBU DX. It had real effort put into remastering all the graphics and adding an entire new story. NSMBU just added a Toadette model and called it a day. And then it absolutely trampled BIS DX on release day. I'll just say that everyone who slept on BIS DX did a good job of sealing AlphaDream's fate. We may never see another M&L game now, and all the fun memorable characters unique to the series will be forever in limbo considering Nintendo's hate boner for using RPG characters outside RPG games. :'(

I love my 3DS. I owned it for the past 6 years and enjoyed many games like Smash 4 and Shovel Knight. However, I feel AlphaDream brought their demise to themselves by remaking a game that didn't need a remake. They should've focused on developing a new Mario & Luigi game for the Nintendo Switch after remaking Superstar Saga.

it's insane. i was looking to upgrade my regular og 3ds for future use but every system is ridiculously priced now. why is this? sure, it's an older system but still.
Nintendo stopped producing them, most people moved onto the switch, and no one sells them anymore. The pandemic might also have accelerated the scarcity of the console and its games with how many people all over were stuck at home dealing with stay-in-place orders and lockdowns.

extra trivia on Priam: his Japanese name, Paris, was the original / beta name for who would later go on to become Ike. It's likely this is the main reason why Awakening's paralogue character was named Paris in the original version, rather than the mythological reference, but of course it then loops around due to the fact that you could try to put said reference onto Ike. And of course the localization team was aware of the mythological aspect when they renamed him.
In a way I kinda miss the 3D Technology fad we had in the early 2010's with 3D Cinema and the 3DS.
Started around the 80s with the Red/Cyan and kind of fizzled out after the 90s, then came back again in the early 10s and fizzled out again. Though I guess the current VR craze could maybe be seen as an evolution of it.

Fetishism in and of itself isn't a bad thing. It becomes bad when you prioritize it over your health. So if you just acknowledge you find someone hotter one way, that's fine, as long as you leave it up to them to make their own choices. I'm fat, so I'm glad when people enjoy that about me, but I still acknowledge it's an unhealthy way to live. I wouldn't choose to stay fat my whole life, just to appease another person.

Maybe I'm not using these terms correctly, but what I'm trying to say is that if someone wanted to date me ONLY because they have a fetish for me, that would only be bad if it stayed that way.
Like, even after getting to know me personally, if they still only liked me for the fetish, then yeah, that's a bad relationship.

Partners in Time would've likely sold more, as it was a much older title so people may not have played it, BiS was already amazing on the DS and definitely did not need a remake

I agree that PiT needed it more. Barely anyone played it because of various things, like people complaining about the special attacks being consumable items (though that really wasn’t an issue...). They missed out on a great game with it. A remake could have brought more attention to it. PiT being a DS game also wouldn’t have gotten in the way as much as BiS.

While I admit that partners in time should’ve definitely been the one to get the remake, as it not only needed more of a graphical upgrade but even could’ve used some gameplay improvements compared to Bowser’s inside story, that doesn’t mean that the inside story remake is bad, I still say based purely on audio and visuals it’s an all-around improvement over the original, even if not by much.
While I’m still glad it exists, partners in time should’ve definitely been the one to get the remake treatment, it was already far behind bowser’s inside story in terms of gameplay and presentation. and unlike superstar saga, whose remake is leaps and bounds better than the original in every department, the bowsers inside story remake is only marginally better than the original. While with superstar saga I see no value in the original beyond nostalgia, I find it completely understandable if someone prefers the original bowser’s inside story more.
I doubt that bowser’s inside story’s poor sales were the sole reason for alpha dream closing, but I also don’t think them remaking partners in time instead would’ve kept them around today. The point is, play the DX versions of the games if you haven’t, they’re great. and they are pixel art h e a v e n .
the og superstar saga has its own feelings the og and the ex feels like different takes on the same game rather than dx being just a remake I wouldnt recommend any of them over the other but rather recommend the fact that I wasnt board of playing both games proves that they different enough to justify playing them both
