  • Of the space-capable humanoid alien species encountered by the Destiny expedition, the Nakai (or blue aliens) are particularly noteworthy in that they have been aware of Destiny for some time.

      I knew I should've went with space Mongols. I was only being silly, anyway. Earlier in the video I said we don't know the prevailing ideology of Nakai civilization, so it should've been clear that when, in the next sentence, I go ahead and pretend to know their prevailing ideology by calling them "space Nazis," I wasn't being serious.

      You and me both. I remember being so angry at all the hatred it got from so-called "Stargate-fans" because it was different, darker, newer and not the SG-1/Atlantis-type they wanted. If they'd only shut it, watch it, and hope it turned out better (as it did) it would probably have lasted longer. I remember thinking that this show wouldn't last long, not because of the show itself, but because those that calls themselves fans. The irony is that when the show got canceled, and years after. Many of those complaining then is the same complaining about it being canceled.

      It wasn't stargate fans that killed it while there were many it wasn't them, I know I looked. By the end of season2 SGU had more than enough viewers to keep it going instead Syfy simply pulled funding right underneath their feat without telling anyone in advance much to the dismay and confusion of the actors and producers. Since Syfy came under new management they've been going threw one series after another, So Don't blame fans, blame the execs at Syfy.
      Also it took a miracle just to keep the Expanse going.

      SyFy, and Sci-Fi before, cancelled many great shows. They always complain they cost too much to make.
      Farscape, then SG-1, SG-Atlantis, SG-U, Eureka and many more
      Although, SyFy is owned by NBCUniversal->Comcast, so maybe this is all coming down from above.
      Either way, I won't watch their network. You'd be foolish to get hooked on their shows, when they could be abrupted ended.

      Yes, Yes, Yes.
      I am the Universe was open for story writing. I didn't want to see some kisses on earth all over again. There could have been so many things where the Destiny could have flown to. I mean, there is a species who could build a planet. There could have been episodes about black holes, galaxy clusters and their formations for example the eridanus supervoid, ringworlds, dyson spheres, teleporting ships that can move to a far away galaxy in a second without stargates etc, or to phenomena far far away of the known universe(Like the episode "Where no man has gone before" in TNG). Who says there isn't a civilization that lived for millions of years with technology far beyond our understanding.
      My head would explode if I was the story writer...

  • @tomshore3788

    What kinda confuses me in regards to the Nakai and their inability to get aboard Destiny is the fact that... well... they've managed to get aboard before. Be it the ship that was locked onto Destiny's hull at the end of "Air" or the ship that lasered its way through the hull to kidnap Chloe in "Space." It's clear that they have the ability to physically get on board if they so choose. Yet they don't. Which makes me wonder if there are other, more subtle, defenses Destiny employs when it's main defenses, the gun batteries and the shield, are bypassed.
    Or perhaps it's the simple fact that Destiny is locked with a master code they had no way of breaking. Until the Icarus expedition came aboard that is.

    • @Onlyalilfool
      @Onlyalilfool 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Tom Shore From what I understood from what Rush said in "Divided", Destiny's automated defenses were able to prevent the Nakai from boarding the ship, we don't know what those defense systems may be but we know that the shield was one of them. Rush goes onto say that now that they occupy Destiny the Nakai are hoping they make a mistake. What I took from that was the as soon as they arrived on board they took control of Destinys defenses, weapons, shields, and other defenses they probably didn't even know they had, limiting Destinys AI. Ability to automatically employ defensive strategies

    • @eds1942
      @eds1942 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree with David Willis. It also might have had something to do with the Crew's familiarity with the Ancient's technology, philosophy and language both mathematical and written communication. And perhaps their physical limitations and visual range, as far as we know, they might not be able to see some of the information on the Destiny's displays and interpret that as a defense lockout.

    • @PatrickMetzdorf
      @PatrickMetzdorf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      lol, yea or... and I know this may be far-fetched, but bear with me... it may also have something to do with, you know, the fact that it's a TV show. Plot devices, the need to keep things interesting and entertaining for an episodic weekly scifi show are all things I have this dubious feeling, may have something to do with it. But what do I know, I'm just speculating.

    I really think they gave up on a good thing with SGU. would love to see it continue. I know it wasn’t the feel good thing as with SGA and SG1 but I liked it gave us something new and the like of these characters, the drones, the higher power that brought the other crew back for a day, destinies mission, the hidden signal etc. I was really looking forward to exploring them 😢😢

  • @ULSTERISBRITISH
    @ULSTERISBRITISH 6 ปีที่แล้ว +108

    They should never have cancelled this. It really started gaining momentum in series 2. I think it would have just got better. Hated not knowing how they ended up. I know there was a comic or novel or something and they survived because there ended up being ancient engineers on board in another part of the ship or something but that was a shit explanation which I don’t think would have been the outcome had the series been renewed.
    I thought they’d maybe have went with Eli dying. Maybe getting his pod fixed but realising he’d spent more power on it so a bittersweet moment. Where he fixed the problem but was too late and would have to let himself die to ensure the others made it.
    I’d love to think Netflix or something would pick it up but dare say too much time has passed for actors appearances etc 😢

    Season 2 of SGU was good! The leftover robots, the nakai, the human civilization they accidentally founded. If the story writers kept focusing on external story like that, rather than internal politics/conflict/drama, teenage angst, etc that they focused on in season 1. SGU could’ve survived.

MGM owned the rights to the show and had just gone through a restructuring, in other words, bankruptcy. Shame, because I LOVED serious SG, unfortunately at the time it was airing EVERYONE compared it with BSG (with good reason may I add) and those long time SG fans started to cry about the serious subject matter and atmosphere of the show and so the ratings dropped!
      SGU could have easily become a world renowned scifi show if it had just 1 more season to prove itself.... Or if majority of viewers weren't so f'in childish and whiny accepting the new atmosphere of the show and allowing for the show to develop further....

It deserves a wholly revival with the same cast as they did all splendid work!!! Really miss them. The Nakai should be back, more should be learned and known about them. Where did they originate from? What's their real motivation going after Destiny? And much more. The series deserve at least 5 or more seasons. Although this appears to be a fictional form of audio visual art (Star Gate), I think it is of some importance to know that a population has policy leaders and individuals who are (forced) followers. _Most_ of the individuals are not driven by hunger for power over others nor do they have violent tendencies by nature/logic/logos. Look at our own species, and you know what I'm talking about; basically most individual people hate their leaders because they are doing protection policy the wrong way. Just my two cents. :)

    ...did I miss an episode??? or a lot??? I binged the whole series after it aired, but I don't remember almost any of this happening on screen. I thought almost all this happened off screen starting with rush activating the beacon, then the next we saw they were back on the ship and simply referenced what had happened. What episodes are these clips from where rush and cloe are on this ship with the implants? One of my biggest complaints with this show has always been that that is something that should have happened on-screen, or at least been given more attention. Did the streaming service just fuck up the episodes???

      bradwolf07 It’s possible. How they started to track the Destiny was by homing in on active Gate connections and later began to “blockade” every type G, K and M stars along the Destiny’s flight path (I’m a bit skeptical of that claim as these would be the most common stars in the Universe.)

    The eyes are amazing. From a scientific background I would like to think their inner eye layer absorbs all light in the spectrum but that of blue. Perhaps an adeptation to living in a n ocean with mostly blue light near a blue star. The outermost layer is primarily made up of a chemical that is defusing the blue light as it is reflected back giving them a luminous glow.

  • @FerretJohn
    @FerretJohn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was one of the chief faults of SGU, the alien bad guys were so alien we couldn't really get behind them. They never communicated in any way we could understand, their motives were always fuzzy, a good villain is one we the viewers can identify with and we couldn't do that with bad guys like the Nakai. Of course the good guys weren't much better, everyone had their flaws and hang-ups, and they didn't even have the decency to give us a new Ronan or Teal'c. If it ain't broke don't fix it, the previous two series were good, trying to mix Stargate with Star Trek Voyager and duct-taping them together with the new Battlestar Gallactica production techniques was fixing a problem that didn't exist.

    The Nakai are another reason why this show wasn't that great. You had an unknown species, and this is all you did with them? They could have become good enemies or allies. Yet the show seemed more about the relationships and characters than the universe.

    • @seaofbloodredroses9940
      @seaofbloodredroses9940 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      rizon72 That's because it was, and that was SGU's biggest flaw. Some shows, like Battlestar Galactica, focus on relationships and they do it well. However, it would never work with SGU for a million different reasons, especially since SGU isn't like BSG - it has no clear end goal. Since no enemies stay around, the only constant in a show with no clear ending is the relationships between people.
      I liked SGU because of the lore, but it was far inferior to both SG1 and SGA because of this.

Sharknado on the other hand will survive forever. SGU was canned just as it was really getting going =( The first season was just a warm-up, sadly it didn't gather enough momentum. Maybe it was just a bit too different and dark compared to SG-1 and Atlantis, that was my initial complaint. It didn't really feel like a Stargate series, Atlantis and SG-1 were way more alike. I might have to re-watch SGU soon, but it's still sad that it was canned.

      They run out of ideas pretty quick. The Ancient ship and the overall idea of that Universal mystery that the ship was going after on auto-pilot was so good...
      They could go metaphysical, philosophical. Go into some reaally new places. But they didn't. They just choose to fill it with some random aliens that were after them and trying to kill them. As we haven't seen that plot for the 1000th time.
