So thankful for the rain you received. We have gotten a few sprinkles lately. Our sweet potato harvest was a bust this year. But the rest of our garden was a decent yield; Praise the Lord! It’s just been a difficult year for gardening. We have lost trees with this heat and drought. One big oak I’m so sad to lose, but it will make good firewood.
Blessings to you and Wanda 🙏🏻

Thank you for taking the time to film your Cub in action. Just trying to get all the animals fed lately has been really taxing for us. We have also been traveling about 13 miles away to help with a neighbor’s barn. We have a break in the heat and are doing a lot after dark also. It’s all we can do to keep up. I cannot imagine trying to film and edit on top of all of that. Every time I see a video of y’all’s lately, I’m so grateful for all of the extra effort.
I’ve gotten myself a couple of notebooks and my new pastime is watching the old videos and taking hand written notes. Looking at all of the old stuff with a new perspective❤
Thank you for all of the extra effort you make to help the rest of us! Got my Danny corn seeds and hope to follow those notes to the letter!
    Blessings from the river swamp❤

I'm in southern IL, and I pulled a couple 4+ Lb Georgia jet potatoes on a test-dig late last week. I'm digging them tomorrow. I only put 23 slips in the ground, since I wasn't sure how they'd do (1st time sweet tater grower). This is a new plot that I just planted for the first time last year, so that may have some play in it. Our kennebek potatoes, planted next to the georgia jets, yielded a solid 200 pounds off of 20 pounds of seed potatoes! I feel more than blessed.

I love sweet potatoes. 😊 Mine will be ready next month. Very excited as it’s my first time growing them and I made the slips myself so I’m extra invested in the harvest. I’m only growing a small amount in grow bags because I’m the only one in my family that will eat them. Still I am super excited to see how they did! I’ll be happy with just about anything lol. 😂🍠Maybe next year I’ll invest in more variety but this year I made slips from two store bought ones and it’s been a fun project! I have to protect them from leaf cutter ants (they decimated my first patch of slips in the ground). So I have to be very vigilant.

  • @amandar7719

Good morning, everyone. Just to say it’s been a weird year for root crops too for me (UK). Different weather obviously. No rain in June when I planted my potatoes late. Rain and no sun in July. Then by early August the potatoes were done. Plants began to die back 20-60 days before they were expected to. I dug a few up and they were the largest 2nd early potatoes I’ve ever grown. Slugs/bugs were already attacking one or two so I lifted them all quick. Quite honestly I was astounded at the quantity and size. I reckon they should have been lifted at least a week earlier. One variety that I use for (never fail) tasty, lump free mash takes around 90-120 days. 70 days and they were done. In-ground carrots are all green and little root. Onions finished early too. Stems died back rapidly a good month earlier than usual. Every year is different of course but I’ve never experienced potatoes growing so quick and large especially as they had no rain and very little haulm growth for the first month. Just didn’t make sense. The mash variety potatoes were grown under weed suppressant fabric sown direct through little holes into a weed whacked cover crop. I was already late planting and didn’t have time to prepare the ground. Nor did I want to spend time hilling up. The other waxy salad/boiling potato variety were sown into a well prepared area and hilled.
I did have another area of the same waxy potatoes that were planted two months earlier than the above from which I’d been harvesting for fresh eating. They gave no sign of rapid growth or bounty. By the time I’d nearly finished that patch, the others were all more than ready to harvest. I’m so glad I checked because I’d have lost the lot. The main crop potatoes that are usually harvested in October were wiped out by an overnight blight in rainy July as were the outdoor paste tomatoes. None of the other potatoes or tomatoes (home seed) were affected.
I also have a permanent area of mixed variety potatoes under woodchips. Like Paul Gautschi’s. Never gets blight. Ever. I use this as a winter harvest bed should I run out of potatoes. For security. And nowhere else to store! 😄
Banged on a touch but thought folk might be interested and maybe encouraged to check their potatoes early this year…..

My beauregard potatoes did the same thing as for the long thick roots, and they were ready (by my estimation) 2 to 3 weeks before they should have been. It was a good thing I'd gone out to get some of the greens! Potatoes were sticking up out of the ground. NE Alabama.

Tried growing sweet potatoes for the first time this year. I purchased 50 slips from an online vendor. I had fantastic top growth. But that was it. I dug today, (inground for approximately 115 days), and I have less than 2 lbs. We should be getting our first frost in about 20-30 days. My largest one is about 2"in width and about 4" long. Not what I expected, but it was my first time, and maybe by ground was too compacted, not enough specific nutrients, not sure. But it was an attempt, and I will hopefully have a better go next season.

We tried several kinds. Georgia Jets are our favorite. They produce well ,are not stringy ,and keep well. We have some shaped like that but also some long slender ones ,wonder if the heat and drought affected the shape.

Down here in the state of Alabama in the middle of Alabama a lot of people plant the Covington's for things like french fries and stuff like that and when they plant the Georgia jets they use them for candied yams, pies and baking. I personally don't know anybody in our area that plants the Beauregard, I think a few people try them and didn't like them they had the same problem that you did.

I love the taste of Beauregard! Mine didn't make a huge harvest but you can't beat the sweet, sticky, moist taste! But, like everyone else I'm looking for what will work in the heat and drought!

For what it’s worth, there are varieties of canna lilies that produce 20# in a 2’x2’ space. The tubers are supposed to be delicious and nutritious, and the flowers are edible, too.

I’ve been going out to feed and water animals and do morning chores while it is dark because it gets too hot. Afternoon chores are brutally hot, so I do all the cleaning in the morning before the sun comes up.

I’m trying sweet potatoes here in Massachusetts for the second year. I grew my own slips from last year using what I learned from you guess and David “ the good” Goodman. I’m going to try and see if I can grow them inside over the winter under grow lights.

Hey Danny & Wanda ... love your youTube channel. You two do a great job. Thanks for the great information.
I planted Cherokee Tan pumpkins in early June. They have the normal extemely vigorous vines, but have only now started bearing fruit. My largest pumpkin is the size of a billiard ball. Our frost date is Oct 15, so do you think any of the pumpkins can reach maturity by then? Do you know the days it takes for the pumpkin to mature from the time it sets on the vine?
Also, I plan to plant these again next year if I can find the seed. Do you know if you will have seed to sell for next year's garden?

Hello from Tupelo, love watching y’all. I usually buy Vardaman’s sweet potatoes. Do you know what variety they may be. Also, do you know where I could buy butter beans like my grandmother used to cook? Danny, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Starting to experience very dry conditions in Middle TN. Altering fall garden plans as springs from which we get our water are running lower than usual. Seems every day is a new challenge. But God will sustain.

I just wanted you to know how God works His wonders. We had zero squash this year until a volunteer squash grew in the middle of my green beans. I have picked over 14 large zukes from that one plant and it is still bearing with no sign of disease. Never had that happen , that was God's work. Also my potato crop was amazing. I did nothing extra to them because I had been very sick. The only strange thing was the cucumber seed we planted turned out to be miniature acorn squash over 30 from 5 plants. God knew we needed them more than pickles.

From the time the slips are put in the ground, how long does it take to grow sweet potatoes?
