    Hi Frank, The reason why there is a weld bead on the cylinder rod is that the adjuster was leaking before you became the owner. Someone made a feeble attempt to fix the problem by extending the adjuster and then welding a bead on the rod to keep it from going back into the bore. This will temporarily hold the track adjustment until the job is finished or the machine is sold. However it will mess up the bore on the cylinder. You never know what you will find when you buy a used piece of equipment. One time I bought a used dozer and it had broken frame bolts. Someone glued the broken bolt heads back on with silicone to cover up the defect. "Life is like a box of chocolates".

    • @Digginok
      @Digginok  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense but it must have been on a previous set of rails. You are right!

    • @davidmorse8432
      @davidmorse8432 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Digginok Yep, previous set was run to destruction. Also, regarding turning pins and bushings, it is no longer beneficial to do this on a small dozer. The cost of the labor out weighs the benefit you get from extending the life of the chain. Run the chain you have till it destroys itself then get a new set of sealed and lubricated chain and install it yourself with new bolts. You will get two to three times the life out "SALT" chain plus you get a split master link. Always install new sprockets when replacing the track chain.

    • @Digginok
      @Digginok  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what the track shop told me too. Do you buy aftermarket chain? The price is not too bad on them.

    • @davidmorse8432
      @davidmorse8432 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Digginok Definitely after market. Sometimes you can go a on Ebay and find some decent deals. Your chain looks pretty good. I would say you might get another 400 hours out of it depending on how much sand you run in. Sand and rock are track killers.

    Frank it’s not your fault that someone has jiggered up the piston surface, what you plan to do will work as long as it’s not to long , a good second yolk is needed as you know, I have seen tracks way worse than yours they should last a good while yet (could be 1000hrs) they are hardly worn in my book and I’ve seen a lot tracks and turned quiet a few also, you are doing all the right things frank I hope it all comes out well for you , when I seen that idle leaning over I knew something was wrong now you showed me what it was, thanks frank for making the effort to show it, that little dozer will last you for years with a bit of t.l.c., TOP JOB Frank you did it, that repair could last for years.

      Thanks! I hoping for 500-1000 hours to n them. Not feasible to turn pins and bushings, that cost 750$ per track, new track is 1,100$. I’ll run them till they are too long

You'll have to get another IH from a bone yard, or find a shop that can bore it out and sleeve it...if possible. Thanks for posting your hard work!!

    Thanks for the video. I'm looking forward to more dozer operating and maintenence work, it sounds real sweet pushing. it's nice watching someone else work on this stuff and use a practical approach to use what you got. So much of what I do here is similar It's not worth owning some of the expensive tools, that only get used a few times in a lifetime. if you can build something with what you got that works as good or better.
    I see the guy commented about buying you an electric grease gun. You'd be smart enough to use it without blowing all the seals out of bearings. I worked on a Cat straight cut header for a guy replacing a drive belt. Every single bearing I had to pull to get the belt over shafts the seals were blown out with over greasing. My guess is the idiots have done that to every sealed bearing on all the machines he owns using those grease guns and being "trigger happy" ! Take care.

    i hate to make a plug, and i dont gain anything but telling you something that you may already know, but broken tractor.com still makes and carries most of all the parts that you are eventually going to need. the complete adjuster assembly is even a bit cheaper than you thought. i know we do what we have to do to keep these machines going, i just had to rebuild my d3 undercarriage, my boys and i did all the labor, but still cost a fortune because the rails were too far gone. its easy to see that you have it figured out and can do what you need to do to keep her rolling though! keep up the good work.....

    I have been able to repair a damaged cylinder bore on a rare item that was scarred in disassembly. Sounds crazy but jb weld. It is a pain. Honed down damage, added small layer of jb weld, used a mild cylinder hone or oil sanded with fine paper. Takes a while but cost a few bucks and time. No leak so far. Frank, I saw what happened to your track adjuster on a video Brian Vanduyn did last spring. Someone had problems getting it to hold the track tight, so they welded a brace on it right in that area to jerry-rig some bolts to hold it open farther. Maybe, someone welded a piece across there to keep the adjuster from going back in any more, then had to weld that back up after the dozer knocked it off after 10 minutes ;)

      @Digginok  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I’d have to say they are better ways than destroying a track tensioner to get it back up and running, that is expensive. More so than making a common sense repair, I have watched my dad take a piece of pipe, cut it to the length needed and split it and wrap it over a track tensioner to get back up and running, and when we had time the pipe was removed and no damage was done to the rod or barrel. I’m sure things are done for various reasons, and I probably shouldn’t try to suppose the intention or the person who made the weld. It could be that the repair was made so the machine could be sold as a working machine, or the other reason you mentioned before. We will most likely never know. I meant you no disrespect as I’m sure when you are in extreme conditions you do what ya gotta do.

      @@Digginok Thanks will give them a call. Keep the how to's on the dozer coming, they are helpful. I have a 125C which is the loader version of the TD8C. Doesn't look like a lot of difference between the C's and E's.

    I also have a TD8E. My top roller is frozen. It looks like the bracket is welded on. Do you know if there is a press that will fit behind there or do I need to cut it off to press it out?

      I’ll have to look in the manual, not sure.

      Put a jack between the roller frame and the underside of the track chain and lift the weight off the top roller. Then remove the bolts on the front of the roller. Under there is a round plate that holds the roller onto the shaft. Remove that and you should be able to slide the roller off the shaft. It might take some doing since your roller is seized. Once you get it off, look at the shaft to see how damaged it is. If it has a heavy groove cut in it then it will need replacing. To do that you need to unbolt the support from the roller frame and take it to someone that can press the shaft out of the support bracket. If the shaft is undamaged you can either put a new roller and seal on or try to fix the old roller with new bearings and put a new seal on the inboard side of the roller. It must be able to hold oil in the reservoir. Clean around the base of the support bracket and verify that it is or is not welded to the track frame. There should be two big bolts down there holding it to the track frame. If it is welded on then someone broke the bolts off so then you would have to cut the welds loose and remove it that way. This bracket only needs removal if the roller shaft is toast. Good luck!

    Looks like that adjuster bar has a bend in it.

      It’s pretty straight, I had it on the lathe. The piece I welded on is a bit out of center but it should be fine.

    I would try an old hydraulic cylinder, it is the same concept, modify an old hydraulic cylinder to do the same thing.

      I think so too!

    Frank, My guess would be that the previous owner couldn't get the track to stay adjusted. they must have pumped it full of grease then welded the shaft to the cylinder. after years of running it that way the weld broke and the rod slid back into the cylinder.

    • @Digginok
      @Digginok  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s probably right on. The rod was not that far out when I bought it so I think it was on a previous set of chains.

    And now you know the 2 reasons why it was for sale in the first place. One, it is an International product and two, it was broke down, as an International product is pretty much expected to stay. Do your best to put a bandaid on it and dump it for a real piece of equipment, Caterpillar or Case..........

    Frank, I have a shop Manual for a TD7, and some roller seals, and some bolts for the blade cutter bar, all new, (if I can find them, you can have them). How can we communicate?

      Email me cunningham2442@gmail.com. And thanks! I have a shop manual, and I’m not sure if the 7 and 8 use the same undercarriage, will try to figure that out.

    I realize the job is done now. But what about boring the adjuster out to the minimum you’d need to to get it clean. And then have it sleeved? Punch the. Ew sleeve in with some bearing retaining compound. Done deal

      That's true. A friend of mine had a lot of used equipment. It kept me busy for almost 20 years. One of the best machines he bought was an old AC 715 C backhoe. Just a simple nice little machine. The biggest breakdown was an injection pump. Not bad for an old machine! Love watching the Vids!
