Thailand and Thai people are just Lao people who migrated south into Thailand. So Thailand was founded and established by Lao people, which is why Thai language today is simply Lao language mixed with Mon/Khmer
the Lao principality of ChiangSaen established independence before both Sukothai and Lanxang, the Lao prince in Chiengsean overthrow the Khmer lord and established his principality which was the whole of Northern Laos, that stretched from Bokeo province into Northern Vietnam, this started the decline of the Khmer empire, expelling them out of northern Laos, which lead to more Lao ppl being able to migrate further south into Thailand, long before Sukothai,
the Lao prince from Chiangsaen named Mengrai migrated west from Northern Laos and established Lanna(ChiangMai) in northern Thailand. Which is why the language is indistinguishable from Northern Lao dialect today, later his nephew FaNgum, a prince from Loungprabang established Lanxang.
In Northern Laos there were several Lao principalities that was established since the 10-11th century Loungprabang ChiangSean, Xiengkhuoang, Sipsongbanna, Huaphan, MuangThenh/MuangLo. During which all of central Thailand was occupied by mostly Mon and Khmer people. Those Thai people did not fall from the sky, they eventually were settled by the Lao people from those principalities, the linguist and Thai historian David K Wyatt wrote in a research, the people of Sukothai spoke a dialect that originated from Loungprabang, the people of Ayutthaya spoke a dialect that originated from Xiengkhouang, and Lanna is a Northern Lao dialect.
Even before that, MuangThenh and Muang Lo established independence in northwest Vietnam by Lao people since the 9th century, recognized by the Nam viet kingdom In Hanoi. Before the northern expansion of the Khmer kingdom which eventually engulfed all of northern Laos. It was these Lao who were lead by several Lao princes from MuangThenh who took their people west and settled in different parts of Northern Laos, and eventually went to settle Thailand.
The majority of Lao people live in Thailand, there are over 30 million Lao people in Thailand Today, only around 3-4 million in Laos. Lao people are naturally Light skin, not tan. If you go to Northern Laos where they originally settled you will see they are very fair skin, like most of my family, even the first European explorers noted in their writings that the Lao people are fair skin when they first encountered them.
Thai is a nationalist term, invented in 1939 to mean free, after the fall of Ayutthaya and the rise of the Mon Chankri Dynasty in Thailand, the Siamese kings for nationalist reasons started to separate our histories, they even established the terms Tai to replace calling these people’s Lao, Lao is the name that was used since ancient times, even recorded many times in the Han dynasty over 2000 years ago when they crossed the Yangtze, and throughout proceeding dynasties, especially during the Tang Dynasty and their aggressive expansion south, The term Tai to describe these people’s never existed in Chinese manuscripts. As bedrock to the foundation of their new nation, the Chankri dynasty had to separate themselves and the majority of their population who were Lao from the more ancient Lao people of Laos, and Sukothai was chosen as their starting point, and these new Tai people were to be their ancestors not the Lao.
For example, the term Taiyuan referring to the people of ChiangMai or Lanna today, never existed before the established of the Chankri dynasty, they where simply called Lao people up until 1899, which was the height of the nationalist movement during the 5th reign, when all documents were seized and altered now referring to them as Tai or Taiyuan people, every document before 1899 referred to them as Lao people, even throughout the Ayutthaya period, the Ayutthaya chronicles called them Lao people.
Even today, the regions of Issan which was widely seen as Lao people from both Thai and Lao perspective just 20 years ago is transitioning into being called Tai people. They are now referred to as Tai Issan, completely made up to separate them from their Lao brethren across the Mekong.

Yes the Thais migrated from the land of Laos, but the people weren't even called Lao, they were the ancestors of Thai and Lao, Southwestern Tais.

I left Laos as a young girl and just went back for the first time after 35 years. I found Laos land scrape---- mountains and lakes are the most beautiful.
Instead of taking the Thai's airline(cheaper), I decided to take Lao's airline to support Lao's economy. I like the blue uniform for the flight crews. Even though, the crews were doing a good job, I didn't felt a warm customer services from them; Instead of, I felt an indifferent attitude or they just there to finish a job. I also felt this at the Lao's embassy.
For business purpose, I did not know why--- they served us a sandwich instead of Lao's foods in fight.
And at airport (BKK), all airlines have their name and sign for customers. There is no sign for Lao Airline, opportunity missed for an advertising purpose to get more tourists into the country.
I have to say, I love the building in the Vientiane (the roofing looks have Laos tradition). That is a very nice job for keeping our tradition.

Laos was originally not a small country but was a powerful Kingdom when it was established in the 14th century known as the Lao Kingdom of the Million Elephants. Today, there are in Thailand over 30 million of Lao called now as the Thai people of Esarn (North Eastern part of Thailand) a name forcibly imposed on them to systematically erase the Lao culture and traditions and history of Laos from their mind. However, the Lao people in the eastern part of Thailand staunchly resisted the Siamese authority and kept alive the lao language as well as the Lao culture and traditions to this day although a great number of the new generation have become "Siamized" and do not know about their real origins.

Over these years, Laos was depopulated with its people forcibly relocated mostly to work as slaves for building the new capital Bangkok, regions along the Menam River and on the Korat plateau. That's why Esarn people in Thailand are originally Lao people with Lao culture and customs.

If this is an Amateur documentary, I am greatly impressed. I had a few questions and funfact.
People in Southeast Asia take great pride in their cultural heritage. I am not an expert on Lao history but why used Angkor Wat and Bayon bas reliefs to illustrate its founding when they made at least two hundred years before Lan Xang is founded?
Also regarding Buddhism, Lao is not the first country in the region to adopt. That honor belong to Burma/Mon and Kampuchea long before their existence. In Kampuchea, it had a massive coexistence and competition with Hinduism, and Hindu won for long time until Jayavaraman the Seventh. In Burma, the founder of Pagan, is a protector of Buddhist Thervada Sect. From an article I' ve read, Buddhism in Lao came from the monks and scribes that followed Fa Ngum' s Khmer wife.
This is the first time, I' ve heard of Fa Ngum disloyalty. Wiki (as a non-expert source) and other articles I ' ve read all said the relationship are great as an adopted father and son, and later in-laws. The Khmer army that Fa Ngum led are not to fight Thailand (not existed yet) but the minor Tai and Lao tribes that caused problems near his birth place and some other rebels in the Khmer provinces. Where Lan Xang is founded, it is far away to hold sway on the Khmer provinces. The Khmer king' s problems in that time are climate changes and the disunity of religious groups, which reduced the populations and feuds amongst the intellectuals.
I ' ve got more interested in Lao history when I read the Luang Phabang was named after Phra Bang, the Buddha Statue given as a gift to Fa Ngum. The two neighbors had only two wars in their hundred year coexistence that i know of. Probably not known in Laos, but the current capital of Kampuchea had an origin related to it. Four Buddha statues and a another sacred statue that looked Laotian, was found in a tree floating down the Mekong. Grandma Penh, a old unmarried woman, build a giant hill to house it. The hill is Mount Penh which is called Phnom Penh in Khmer. It is probably the most lasting giant monument we build since the fall of Angkor.

    • @tingtingnoy3133
      @tingtingnoy3133 3 ปีที่แล้ว

FaNgum took an army of 5,000 Khmer soldiers and United most of the Lao principalities, by the time he conquered Vientiane he had over 50,000 men and 5,000 war elephants, after subduing his cousin the King of ChiangMai, (so on that map ChiangMai was apart of Lanxang ) who promised to supply their army on FaNgums request, FaNgums aim after Vientiane was to invade Ayutthaya, he only stopped his invasion plan after his cousin king Uthong of Ayutthaya submitted to him, sent his daughter as peace offering, plus elephants, ivory and other precious gifts. The world would be different if FaNgum actually invaded Ayutthaya, and Ayutthaya would of never invade Angkor.

The recently retired "civilian" military specialists of RO were keeping tabs on U.S. military equipment deliveries. By 1962, if not earlier, CIA "civilian" case officers were accompanying American-backed guerrillas in the field.

I want to see Laos doing better both economy and education. When I was in Laos I was wonder, if there were something I can do to help. I was told not to ask too many questions.
I was sad and wonder if Laos has been victimized from her own leaders' decision---- so many times. The last king allowed U.S. to bomb Laos related to Vietnam war--- that will have 100 years or more damage toward Laos, and now Lao's leaders decided to use and keep Communist system going; despite, Soviet Union the founder had failed and the system had been proved that they are not good systems (Laos, North Korean, and Cuba are countries still did not get this memo: Most of them people are the one pays the price).
Many Lao's girls and boys or many generation lack of education to compete in the world stage or Asian countries' stages. Her people is the most value resource for Laos. If one is not be truthful, the true will always come out. Laos will continue to pay the price as she has been getting for many 100 years due to leaders' pride and lack of world stage game. There is a saying that the Vietnamese plant and grow rice; the Thais harvest and sell the rice. The Laotians just watch the whole process. I think that says it all. @@solomonking5097 you know that the Frenchmen was the ones who gave Cambodia and Kaos their independence from Vietnamese and Thais ?
Siam today is Thailand and Thais they controlled Laos and The Vietnamese controlled Cambodia ...if it wasn’t for Frenchmen to give independence to Laos and Cambodia and even Vietnam then everything would have fallen to Chinese and Russia .
