To be fair, the prices of the old defender is ridiculous right now

Short term bubble has definitely burst but long term it doesn't really matter. My 87 landrover 90 country is not going anywhere

Land rover prices have been mad for years it's about time the bubble burst the days of a series 1 going for 100k are long gone

The thing is if it is quality, you only need to buy once. So the bubble does not matter. That's why we buy LandRover. Great video of the team. Looking forward to seeing some of those vehicles finished.

There comes a point of market saturation, I suspect those that want and can afford a bespoke build Defender have now got them. Those that want but can't afford might in the past have increased their mortgage to fund such a purchase, but higher interest rates have quashed their dreams. There's also been an explosion of custom build land rover defender specialists in the past 6 - 8 years, so you may struggle to find the 'slim pickings' of those that can really afford these great and often eccentric builds.

Very clean 1999 Td5 90 original engine and chassis - good to export. Sat on my drive since March and not able to shift it for 15k. 12 months ago it’d have been gone in days - not sure what’s going on!!

The MOD I believe still have I think approx 5000 plus Landrovers in service which are over 20 years old. When they finally work out which vehicle will replace them and cast them, prices will drop. I had a 2013 XS 110 from new had to sell it because I couldn’t leave it overnight outside my house, still love them though 😊

Your valuation of the ex. MoD Defender/Tithonus is up in Wolf territory. Too much.

  • @9MAS
    @9MAS 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

With its previous celebrity owner I would have thought that Tithonus was worth more too! I have the same one and fitted a
3.9 V8 with manual gearbox and only one silencer, sounds great . Would make a nice beach runner. Ex army always seems cheap but to me it’s iconic iteration of a design icon. Uber cool.

I think land rover suppliers have had it great for many years ripping people off just because they sell and people want them. Looks like the bubble is bursting a bit so hopefully this will favour the customers a bit more.

It’s sound like “ cost of living crises “ just gave supermarkets a reason to hike prices . To a degree the same is true of Land Rovers . I absolutely love them and would definitely buy one if I could afford one . I guess parts prices are also somewhat inflated.

That's not really how it works mate. Upping prices wont't increase profit. You can lookup the law of supply.

@@squireeditionsltd That is one factor but the fact that the new one has deviated too far into the luxury market, the original ones have become more desirable. I have a 2013 model and I often get offers while waiting at the traffic lights - I am serious. This is how bad it is here.

Having been around Land Rovers since 1953 when father bought his first 88inch for farm work, I have always seen the modern facination of them as fashion-based rather than funtional based therefore subject to the whims and excesses of a fickle following.

I have a 2007 110 SW. The bulkhead is starting to rust a bit. Doesn't look like there's much alternative to stripping it all down and repainting? Is that worth it? The body is generally tatty so it seems like a waste of money. But I'd prefer to prevent the rust if possible.

    • @squireeditionsltd
      @squireeditionsltd  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

A very subjective topic. I imagine it would depend on many variants eg; are you wanting to keep it? How invested are you in aesthetics? Or is it just to keep it going for a bit longer? By the sounds of it, a bit of rust treatment wouldn't go amiss.

It’s an early nineties gs with nad diesel yes its “military” but for the folk who know ex MOD land rovers its worth 3,5 to 4k as is if it was a “WOLF” it would be more than worth your expected figure and then some untouched, what lets your vehicle down vs a wolf (wolf being a much heavier duty mod spec vehicle) is it was a pre TDI as close to civilian spec mod purchase.
That’s not to say its a bad vehicle in anyway shape or form just not necessarily worth your asking price as is but with some of the upgrades you guys do it’ll worth more to right customers.

    I bought a 59 series 2 for £200
    I've owned it for 34 year's
After watching your video I am a bit concerned
Because for me to part with it I'd want £200,000
The paint is a bit flat
But I've been told people love patina
Others use a word called "knackered"
And I've made it look like a mercano set
The engine is in the dining room (3.9)
The gearbox (LT77) is in the back
The wheels (900s) are in the garden
The Wings and 90 seat base are in the garden
The rest is all attached 😂

In New Zealand - seems to be similar to Australian comments above - stupid money is being asked for newer models and very old models requiring a lot of work which is expensive.. Had considered importing one from UK but bio-security and safety rules are making this very hard and risky now.. heard a couple of people had to re-chassis newer Vehicles due to slight rust & mud.. even though it had passed Uk mot and overseas inspections..

I finally purchased my 2013 XS station wagon a month ago. 90K miles. I have been watchaching the market for about 18 months!! I think I got a good deal (ish). I'm putting a LOF heavy duty clutch and their one piece gearbox to transfer case shaft (after mine failed). I can't complain, I paid a lot less for this defender that most that were advertised. The guys doing the transfer case and shaft tell me the rest of the truck is immaculate and indeed the interior looks new. I had a feeling the shaft was going to fail as the gearchanging was clunky. So, has the market dropped? yes it has but during my extensive research (procrastination) I have observed a cyclical movement up and down by about £10K over about 6 month cycles. I have been looking at puma 2.2 station wagons for clarity here. Many dealers and private individuals continue to ask silly money, but you get a feeling for what is good value. Are they going to crash, I don't care, I got a great project car, I can use and do up and modify at my leisure. What fun. I'm new to the channel, like it, keep it going, a pool of ideas and you never know, I might be up for an LS3 conversion soon.

My last Land Rover v8 build, was a 109 with 1979 AMC Cherokee running gear - AMC 360 with 4bbl holley, 2" header pipes into 4" collector and 3.5" straight pipes with Cherry Bomb silencer, GM TH400 with high stall converter and manual shift valve body, Quadratrac transfer box, Dana 60 (from a Dodge W200, rather than the original Dana 44), as this was my personal build, and I already had the Cherokee laying about and recently stripped the Dodge, it didn't cost me too much. I was originally going to use a 88", but measuring up, the engine/box/transfer box would never have fitted.
Personally, I'd be looking at a MOPAR (Chrysler Corp) engine, due to the age, an old school 6 pack optioned 383, 426 Hemi or 440, or if wanting newer 5.7 N/A Hemi or 6.2 HO blown engines.
Everyone uses the GM lumps (Personally, I wouldn't even use them as a boat anchor), but that's mainly because there are far more aftermarket performance parts available and a monkey can build them. So stand out from the crowd.
As for prices, I bought an 88" 2a in 1993 for £250, requiring some work to get road legal and safe, ran it for 6 years, by which time it was needing a new chassis (if you didn't want to patch it), sold it to a local farmer as MOT failure for £250. For the last 15 years at least, I've been seeing them in far worse condition and parked in brambles 20+ years, asking for £2500+ and even coilers are overpriced for what is essentially a very basic 1960's engineered car derived from the Range Rover, which should be worth more money, but don't seem to be anywhere near the same price brackets for similar condition.

If i were in the Landrover restoration business, and demand has fallen, along with prices; Then this is the time to buy your base vehicle stock. Similar to buying stocks when they are beaten down. Everything mean reverts, so orices will go back up. See this as an opportunity to accumulate at a discount

Its a ridiculous market, where else can you hope to sell a a car 20+ years old covered in rust and dents, drives awful no mod cons and is noisy for near 20k, you can buy a range rover for a quarter of that with the same issues, and its getting to the point that a 2012 defender is selling for more than the new model from 2020. love em but they are not worth the price people are pushing, the market doesnt just need to burst it needs to explode.

Defender prices will always go up and down regardless. But will always have a reasonable value. Not like range rovers for example that drop in price and then stay low!

I think if you have a tidy tastefully modded classic defender it’s only going to hold or increase in value the longer you keep it and the less availability out there the more desirable it will be, But I think the days of wrecks selling for a fortune are gone. For all the renovation costs the posers can get a nice new defender to park out side Starbucks.

The 110 bubble has got a slight puncture in South Africa, but think the prices were very inflated about 2 years ago, and levelled out.
Supply and demand caught up with reality.
The Series 1,2,3's are well down as they were ridiculously high priced, even for fairly heavy rusted ones.
Most of the old retired gentlemen have their topless *mutton dressed up as lamb* Series rebuild in their lockup garages for sunny day use when the grandchildren comes for a visit.
    The rest (suv's ) don't count as Landy Rovers😂
The new Pretender ( defender ) is overpriced, and their owners do not recognise other Land Rover owners as part of the same tribe...

You don't sell Land rovers , you sell luxury 550hp Luxury Sport motor wet dreams !
I'll stick with my 300 TDI pick-up which spends most of the time off road iny woods getting scratches from trees and assisting me to plant more and repair deer fencing. With less than 1/4 the horse power, runs on veg oil or anything really, works great with the option to throw a dead sheep in the back without damaging any leather upholstery!
My genuine 300 TDI may not be couture fashion like your lovely vehicles that will be unlikely to be used as a work horse. But in my eyes, more beautiful for the way the paint has worn off the sill trim from real farmers and people getting in and out for 27 years, and it's getting too rare to see unmolested Land Rovers which are as they came out of
    Solihull.
They are already beautiful without the makeup. Although one appreciates this is not your business model, which is based on cash rich folk who want to flaunt it, loudly!
The values went up over lockdown, and have settled again for proper Landy's, the rather agricultural types.
It looks like you have all the facilities and skills to tap into the classic collectable market, which seems to remain stable in view of the diminishing numbers of unmolested vehicles out there. But these are a more long term investment anyway, and I will never understand why anybody would want to go really fast in one anyway; unless they need a near death experience to make them feel alive?
