    A little about me:
    Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
    Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
    He plays and teaches guitar on his TH-cam channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

    I could listen to the clean shredding Dovy did all day, the high gain stuff maybe a 1 minute solo. Glad he pointed out that clean tone allows you to hear all your mistakes. Seems like unless you are performing, playing clean is more useful, even if not more fun. Thanks for posting

    • @ZackRamsey14
      @ZackRamsey14 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to think this as well, but after playing clean for a while then going to a distorted tone, I found a lot of noise coming through because playing clean does not force you to mute. If you're going to be playing mostly distorted, you should practice distorted, so you are ready to mute all the amplified little noises.

    Dude I love this. You’ve been my favorite Internet guitar teacher for a while now. I’ve been playing for nearly 2 years now and a lot of your videos just help me see certain aspects of guitar in a new way. And now it’s really cool to see where you haven’t explored certain areas of guitar. Like it’s easy to see someone who is great at guitar and think that they have all the tools and know all the ins and outs of the instrument, but in reality everyone has something new to learn. I don’t have enough interest in shredding yet to really dedicate myself yet, still getting through the beginner to intermediate stages. But I’m hoping to learn as many styles as I possibly can when I get the hang of playing in time and in rhythm

    Happy New Year Dear soul!
    Long time watcher of the stream.
    Hat's off to you for continuing your guitar journey and publicly no less.
    Your commitment to improvement in the area of "shreddin" is inspiring!
    I look forward to viewing your progress and coming along for the ride.
    Too long have I sat on my guitar laurels ( whatever laurels means) but no Longer.
    From this day hence I am rededicating myself to learning new and exciting guitar skills.

    This is random, but when watching Sean practice to a metronome I realized that the only way I ever practice scale fragments to a metronome is by playing them in triplets whereas Sean speeds up the BPM and plays a note per beat. I should probably start mixing that in as well in practice to change up the patterns I play. Nice vid Sean!

    Just noticed that the angle that you and Davi hold your picks is different. Compared to a flat angle against the strings, Davi holds his pick turned edge slightly upwards, whereas you hold yours, as most of us do, with the pick edge angled slightly downwards.

    It's always about "transferring processing from head to hands". When you first start, you go from placing fingers one by one to "grabbing a chord", and now you're going from not quite hunt-and-peck, to "typing" sequences. You got to your starting point for this by first hunt-and-pecking them, though.
    I like Dovdas's emphasis on the musicality of that. It's like being able to just think "C", and immediately just grab that "C" the music requires. The better you get at it, the more you can focus on expression, rather than on "search".
    It's not everything. If you check out Paul Gilbert's more recent interviews, for instance, you'll often hear him talking about what a challenge playing "less shreddy" music is to him, and how that's what he's been focusing on. (And complaints from fans have not put him off; he has some musical objectives, and he's going to follow those, because it's the music that matters - in fast passages as well as in something "groovy".) He says there are "two types of guitar players" th-cam.com/video/iFr3TRN2CWk/w-d-xo.html

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul's quest to "move beyond shred" goes back at least ten years, now, I reckon. An early example (which also shows how handy it can be to have some speed at your command at times) is *Enemies (in Jail)* th-cam.com/video/iZ1ODg-HN50/w-d-xo.html
      (He's just a great source of wisdom about everything, so I'm also just using this as an excuse to commend him to you in general.)

    I've been trying to develop some shred ability recently as well. Like you are saying, the end goal needs to be musical. Going against Dovy, one of my favorite exercises it doing "circular" 2 string economy picking up and down the neck. It sounds great and pretty usable without it sounding too neo-classical. Mike from Art Of Guitar has a great video on it called Circular Picking Secret Weapon.

    This is out of the box, but I've been doing a free online touch-typing course the past two weeks. I can already touch-type but I developed some bad habits in lockdown. Those exercises have done wonders for both my hands playing guitar. I feel like Allin Holdsworth if I pick up the guitar after doing my typing exercises for 15 minutes. It’s a great warm up and kind of sight reading training to because you have to watch the screen.

I was Certain I could Never do it--but I was wrong. I might have to practice along with you since I am absolutely not proficient in any speed category with it. My fingers are filled with thick glue compared to Dovy's controlled wet noodles. The years have not been kind to my hands. Stay Well Groovy One and Thanks Sweetwater...and Dovydas!

    The easiest way to shred guitar is to toss it into a wood chipper. Personally, I don't think shredding sounds musical. It isn't about creating a mood, conveying an emotion, or telling a story...it is all about showing off. The fastest player isn't necessarily the best player.

    How can shredding not be musical? Like any other music, it all ties together. Most leads set alone sound just like practice and rarely sound "musical". It's what's behind the "shred" that makes it all come together. Even blues without bass & drums just sounds like a bunch of bends & scales. Hope all is well, take it easy.
