    A little about me:
Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his TH-cam channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

Sean, my guitar instructor and I hit jazz since that's what I wanted to do - because I love jazz so much - and this was exactly what he's been trying to get into my head - but you did it with a really much simpler approach. Thank you so much for this. Now when doing the chord heavy jazz arrangements my brain is now saying 'ah ha'.

You can go a lot further in your understanding and ability by breaking down chords into intervals and learning to play those intervals everywhere. You’ll be able to create chords anywhere. You’ll also see that you can create chords that are physically unplayable, but you can omit certain notes to make that new chord work (like omitting the 5th and maybe even the root if you’re playing with others). Diminished 7th chords as parents to dominants and their home keys will really wake you up (Pat Martino’s Parental Forms ideas).

Your comment reminded me of hearing of various studies that link learning and making music to increased brain capacity. Wikipedia provided this summary: "This strong association between musician status and gray matter differences supports the notion that musicians' brains show use-dependent structural changes. Due to the distinct differences in several brain regions, it is unlikely that these differences are innate but rather due to the long-term acquisition and repetitive rehearsal of musical skills." I can't help but think that relearning and practicing your technique may well have significant other benefits for your brain injury. Best to you.

Great lesson. I never noticed how the minor and major triads sit on top of each other like that.
The bonus tip about using your pinky to play the tonic of the major chords is basically the bottom half of the G shape chord. That means you can also play the major and minor 7th notes too, using your ring or middle finger. It’s a surprising easy, yet uncommon, way to play 7th chords.

What's funny about this is this is all information I already have full access to and already know. But honestly it just never occurred to me to voice chords in this way. Immensely useful to jam with and an alternative way to visualise the fretboard for composition. Nice work Sean.

Oh God why did you make me remember that? Do I think this info could help Jim? Nope...

When you play a Minor 7th in place of major chord, It's transitional and the the Minor 7th is called the BLUES Substitution chord... i.e. from A to F#m7...it doesn't work for everything but it works for almost all blues 1-4-5 patterns

Incredible. Just today I thought that I know my way around the fretboard "pretty well" (compared to the level I consider myself at) that I can start flexing on my friends... And here comes Sean showing something so simple and elegant but something that never even occurred to me... Also I never realized that the major scale is actually just 3 major chords + their relative minors + 1 diminished. Mind totally blown.

I've been listening to you for years now. In the beginning I have to admit I was a little lost and even your low ball theory was too much. As I learnt the basic chord shapes I found that the stuff you talked about made sense. Now it's like you are showing me a picture of the puzzle I'm putting together. Yeah there are others out there as well, but they don't have your dry "three bean salad" sense of humor.

    Interesting question/ vid idea here.
Would you be able to "jam" at home with someone who only knows enough to be dangerous? Ie; self taught by YT 3 yrs in comes over for dinner and mentions hes been learning guitar. Could you jam without becoming a teacher? Could you stop from correcting obvious mistakes?
Idk thought it was an interesting thought to put out there.
Thanks for the down to earth lessons.

I'm trying to understand the tip where if you play say a major chord like G, you can then play single notes up 2 or 4 frets and why that fits. You said using the bottom 3 strings in 5th fret is an A minor. and at the 7th fret its a B minor. If i move up a string its the double barr chord C and D in 5th and 7th frets. Oh is that why it works because of the D double barr chord at the 5th fret ? It being G's relative minor ?

Thanks Sean, this lesson is gold! I've been getting mild pain in my fretting hand (all of a sudden after 23 years of playing), so have been looking for new ways to play chords (ways that enable my fretting hand and wrist to remain in a straight line instead of forming something close to a 90 degree angle/ "L" shape). These 1 finger major and minor chords fit the bill! Also love using the 1 finger inverted 5ths in my playing. Thanks for another great lesson again!

Your Austin lessons have been incredible. A change of scenery and getting away from the usual distractions does amazing things for doing creative work.
