    Tokodi... I remember my sister coming home after working as an ajudicator during drama fest... And she told me about this promising, young high-school guy who acted very well... After years we see Tokodi on t.v. And she was like... This is him.. This is the student I told you about....
    She is happy to see that he is growing in his career.

    I'm trying to watch this show, but I'm struggling. Is it just a bunch of middle class Kenyans praising themselves when they really aren't making that much money? Kenya is Kenya and it's one of the poorest countries in the world. How much money can you really make in Kenya as a creative? Why not be like Lupita Nyongo? be real and understand that to really make it you need to be in New York, London or Los Angeles?
    I'm more curious about Eli because he grew up in London -- Does he really believe that Kenya is the place to be? or did he just get tired of the racism in Europe and decided he needed a break? I've noticed that a lot of Kenyans that move back are from Europe and not the US -- America is different. The opportunities are different. Once you get there moving back to Kenya is out of the question.
    What do you guys think?

    • @sylviakaranja9636
      @sylviakaranja9636 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You obviously cannot compare the Kenyan creative industry to the industry in America, but you have to give credit where it is due and it has definitely come a long way. I definitely did not get the vibe that they are praising themselves but rather answering the questions they have been asked and granted they are good at their craft. They are clearly making money out of being creatives and not everyone's path in life is to be the 'Lupita' and it may or may not be their goal to go to other countries. Why not expand the industry from right where they are because going to Hollywood is not a guarantee or sure thing. And I am speaking as someone who has direct contacts with people working in Hollywood and it is no walk in the park and the people making the money are the big celebrities you see on tv and movie screens. And as a Kenyan who lives in the States I have seen a ton of people move back home as much as there is opportunity out here, again that's not the end all be all.

      Just how demeaning can some people get? Bunch? Middle class?? Is it really necessary?🤷‍♂️Success is sure relative ...so what if their win is small.to you? Means they shouldn't celebrate it? We love their content!! We relate to their content. Call that shallow or whatever but they are good!
      Also title of the video is pretty clear; we're talking about the Kenyan industry here. Pretty simple.
      There is criticism but this, is destructive criticism 😄

    • @discounthub1401
      @discounthub1401 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sylviakaranja9636 You make very valid points. I guess what I'm seeing with this show is the general cautiousness of Kenyans & especially middle class Kenyans. A more honest discussion about Money would have made this more interesting, don't you think? It's not hollywood, it's still Kenya. Also, I've noticed with many middle class Kenyans and their continuing references to America and in this one we heard..Braveheart, johnny Depp...etc, etc Do middle class kenyans think they can re-create america in Kenya? The kenyans coming out of the slums seem to be more real about Kenya's realities. I also assume that anyone that loves acting would love to make it in hollywood one day. They're all watching the Emmy's the oscars....the middle class kenyan dream appears to be in America. is this true or not?
      And I go back to Eli again -- I'm sure coming from London he see's the 3rd world realities of Kenya . He is cautious with his questions (is it because he doesn't want to offend them with the truth of what he sees in Kenya or what?)
      I would have asked the following questions:
      Is your ultimate dream to move to Los Angeles and make it in hollywood?
      How long can you work as a "creative" in Kenya before that conservative society starts to ignore you? Can you do it past 40?
      Nairobi is expensive. Do you think creatives can afford to live in Nairobi given how little it pays?
      Has social media hyped this idea of being a creative in Kenya? when for most, it's not a sustainable career. All these young people starting youtube channels, spending 24hrs a day on instagram hoping to become who? the next Kardashians? are they being realistic?

    • @sylviakaranja9636
      @sylviakaranja9636 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@discounthub1401 just because they didn’t cover what you would have wanted them to cover doesn’t take away the validity of the content. And what exactly is wrong with them using American references, if that’s where they get their inspiration from? Don’t impose your perspective on others as it being superior. You can live the dream living anywhere... it is all relative. There are many struggling creatives in America too, this ain’t the land of milk and honey ! The hustle is all the same! Let’s empower the younger generation to wanna improve the current Kenyan creative industry instead of putting them down. And from what I’ve seen, you can absolutely make a good living being a creative in Kenya as the industry is expanding.

    • @discounthub1401
      @discounthub1401 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sylviakaranja9636 You make more good points. Can you really live the dream anywhere? I'm not sure about that, but yes, they are many struggling creatives in the US (i've met them) but at least with those one's they can go on to other jobs in the wider creative field because the industry in the US is so vast.
      Dont you think Kenya is like a village echo chamber? You can say I'm a great actor, singer or whatever (& maybe you are who knows?) but you won't really know until you compete against the best. It's like playing for Gor Mahia and saying I'm a great football player. Maybe. but you won't really know unless you play in Europe against the best.
      So, people have to guard against getting stuck in that echo chamber. Actually, that would have been a good question for them. Is Kenya a village echo chamber that one has to escape from in order to realize their full creative potential? I'd be very nervous in Kenya. Imagine hitting 40 & then everything stops and you have no gigs, no income, nothing...
