The heartbreak when you find that perfect ad and someone else already beat you to it. 🤩😔 What's even worse is when you're already committed to picking up something mediocre and then a real winner pops up and you don't have time to get both. 🙄 They don't call us woodhounds for nothing. Always sniffin'...
I'll start by saying that I'm a remodeling contractor fot 41 yrs. This will come into play shortly, so bear with me. My cousin who lives in German town Wi informed my brother and I about a massive soft maple recently dropped & randomly cut up & scattered by a yree service. We knocked on the door to express our interest in taking the wood in trade for our clean up services. The homeowner was very receptive to our offer with delite. As we got to talking details he noticed the logo on my box truck, and asked me if I install cabinets. Next thing ya know he mentioned he has a 25 ton Brute splitter he'd like to use in trade for some of my labor installing his cabinets. We agreed and the wood hounding began. Every chance I had I'd be out there cutting bucking and noodling. By the time the clean up was complete, he told me that I had made such short work of the project that he wanted me to have the splitter. I wanted to start installing his cabinets, he insisted on paying me in full for my labor. The splitter was only 2 yrs old with about 20 hours of run time. I was shocked & surprised at this new arrangement & humbly accepted his offer. This convinced me that there is still hope in humanity, and that not everyone is out to screw others over. Thank God for people like this guy.
@InTheWoodyard Here's the irony.. I made a request in prayer a little over 3 yrs ago for a decent starter splitter. Funny how it just seemed to come together in perfect timing.
LOL... Glad you did a video on this. I get calls sometimes - "Hey, I will do you a favor. I know you are selling firewood. I have a few trees you can have. Cut them and they are yours." OR "A tree service has knocked down a tree, do you want the wood?" I know the tree was taken down for a reason - Dead and rotten. Plus, they didn't want to pay to get it hauled off. Keep the great videos coming, sir.
I love seeing ads for “free firewood” and it’s standing trees next to house, power lines, road, etc. People think it’s a gold mine. How can they be so dumb? I’d say 1 out of 100 that I see are something that I would consider getting
Hey Chris let me tell you a free wood story a buddy told me he had all these big oak trees he cut down, and had a neighbor already committed to taking the wood. I asked for some, nope, neighbor gets it. He was complaining one day his saws were dull, with the echo not running. I told him to bring em over. I sharpened his chains, got the echo running, tested the cut, he left happy. 2 months later i get a call, "you still want the oak? My neighbor isnt coming over to get it. I've hauled 6 cords of sweet oak out of there, with about 6 more to go!
All good points, Chris. Over the last 10 years, I have done just about all of it, too, except for cutting down tree and leaving a deposit. I did one job where the wood looked ok and 10 minutes after i got there and started loading it was all junk. So took it as a learning experience loading up all of it (the homeowner helped), and on the way home was the yard waste dump. I wasn't really happy, but i learned something and felt good to help out an elderly couple that didn't have a way to haul it off.
Mornin Y’all! I’ve recently hit the mother load of oak and hickory but sadly it’s tornado wood. I will even be hauling a splitter to help friends split their downed trees. Fun show, like always, thank you kind sir.
Interesting video today Chris I’ve been hauling home tree service wood from the landfill, I haul the bigger pieces and push the brush up in the pile. I’m getting oak, ash, cherry, elm, silver maple some of the pieces are big enough that I have to cut them in half just to pick them up with my tractor I’ve gotten a lot of good wood so far. It’s a fifteen minute drive by tractor. 🚜 have a great soggy day
Hey Chris, love your content. I’m wanting to get a wood stove for my home this year. Could you make a video ranking the best woods to burn inside if you haven’t already? Appreciate all the information you put out, for free!
I have several videos on the subject...there are over 1400 videos on my channel about all things firewood waiting for you to watch! Another one would be good for me to make though and I will put it ion my to do list! THANKS!
Some good tips there, also tips for people wanting to get rid of wood when they drop a tree, dont offer up the crap, burn or dump that stuff. Its actually much easier to deal with than the bigger stuff which is what desirable for the wood people anyway!
Chris, great video, I've been selling firewood for just over 1 year. I get 90% of my wood from ads posted free in the city. I have a series of questions i ask myself before going and how desperate I am is a big influence. I usually don't go if there is no picture but yesterday on my way home from work, I stopped at the address and the pile was dream like, beautiful clean straight cuts. I heaved 2 pieces into my vehicle and went home. Fun video.
It’s so funny you mentioned “they want free tree service.” People out here in Az will do the same with their yards. They offer the rocks for free so that they can get a free lawn renovation 😂. I can see if they had a big pile that they needed to get rid of. But they’ll want you to remove all of the rock that covers their yard.
Fortunately, I have Tree serv. guys that bring me premium logs because there is no sawmill nearby, and it costs them $40 a ton to dump it. The recycle place will not take anything over 12 in. One reason that I bought the Axis is because I get Oak trees that are 40in at the stump. A little tough to handle but it makes some pretty firewood. They actually sort out the brush and limbs and bring me the logs in a separate dump trailer. Sometimes, on a larger job, I will take my dump trailer to the job, and they load me down. It is a wonderful symbiotic relationship.
G’morning Chris ! Everything you say is true (in this video at least). I too have had EXCELLENT scores that extend from the initial contact. Go out side and get cuttin ! GoodNightIrene
Austrian pine is a very common yard tree in the plains states. Gets pretty large and makes pretty decent firewood when properly seasoned. Not sure what the btu rating is, but it is much better than ponderosa and white pine.
From the other side if wanting to work with tree companies be honest and punctual in your agreements and treat it like part of your business many would rather give the wood away for free rather than having to pay for disposal, after many no shows tree companies decide it not worth the hassle and expense of going back to a tree job to do a cleanup because a woodhound did not show up as agreed to. Phil and Karen from AFF and yourself are perfect examples of how to do business with tree service companies both sides can do business and both sides coming out ahead. 1%💩😁
Well hopefully the wheel bearing replacement will be in this Saturday morning and i can continue my drive west, home. . There computer volunteered to order the parts from a Kansas parts depo not a Colorado parts depo. Thus an extra 24hr delay. Not much i can do, but go with the punches.
What timing! 😅 I will be helping Brother in law picking up ash at one of his customers tomorrow. All bucked up and some big rounds. He will be bringing his 1.7 ton Yanmar with a claw.
That is a new one to me...I have heard it called Canadian maple, Manitoba maple, Elder, Edge maple, Box maple, Trash tree, Junkwood, Crapwood...but it all burns!
The people that want trees removed nwxt to power lines, buildings, etc are special ehen they say "free for the wood, must be insured". Red pine has about a year before it starts going bad as soon as it dies or is cut down. Once split, stacked, and dried red pine will last a while. White pine lasts a lot longer as a dead standing tree.
I have a question... I got a bunch of free Eucalyptus off Facebook marketplace and I split it all up. The wood is beautiful, perfect splits to size, no rot, no bug damage, dry, pretty color, smells good, nothing to complainabout. I made a post to sell the wood and I have zero people interested, which is strange because I sell a lot of firewood. In fact, I have sold lots of garbage wood, which iv been honest with the customer about prior to the sale. I'm not very familiar with Eucalyptus and I can't recall burning it myself but it seems I can't even give this stuff away despite its nice appearance and reasonable price. Is Eucalyptus just trash wood that I'm not aware of? Because I sell loads of mixed hard wood to the point that I can't keep up with requests, but yet no one is interested in full load of Eucalyptus so I try to mix it in. Can I please get your thoughts on this? Thanks. Also Great video and channel!
They might not know what it is...I could just mix it into the mixed hardwood. It is GREAT firewood 34.5 btu and oak is 24 so ya...awesome firewood...maybe save it for fall/winter sales???
I retired in 2016 and my firewood adventures began. I found this vid to be amusing because I've seen most of what you've just shown and I now know that one must learn how not to waste your time and effort. As an example, an acquaintance was selling his house and told me he had firewood that I could have for free. I accepted. It turned out to be mostly kindling and garbage. Look before you leap.
The city parks board would clean up all the trees in the city & would bring it to one location in the city & section off a area next to a parking lot, the public was allowed to cut logs up for firewood! FREE! Dad & I must have cut 500 truck loads in 40 yrs! They shut it down 5 yrs ago the wood goes to the garbage now or gets sold! Now I look on Market place or Craigslist!
@@InTheWoodyard let us not forget the sue happy who keep them in business. On the stand of standing ash possible popple 5:53 you may have missed the overhead power lines and power pole and transformer in the pic pass. 1%💩😁

For some people that is all they can get . In some parts of the country there is no professional logging around.
I saw that listing in hertel Chris.
