Coolest track in the Coromandel?! | The Wires 4WD Track Maratoto

- Tucked into the hills of the Coromandel Forest park is this epic little trail. The Maratoto 4WD Track is an epic adventure away from Auckland and not far from Thames. It includes something I have wanted to do for years, A rock wall. I am very keen to get back here and do it all again! This was an awesome 4WD adventure.

This track is awsome done it a couple months back now in my old open diff hilux, paid up in the money box 2!! Cheers to the guys that keep it maintained
This is one of my favourite tracks I’ve done so far. Grew up there and never knew it was there until last year. Now have a dedicated off roader (trailered) that I’m wanting to take up there and Thompson’s.

awesome bro cool vid ty.. building my amarok up at the moment with rival front bar and under body, gonna build some rock sliders and diff protection and bang on a winch ..cant wait

I used to camp down there with a group of friends off wires rd. Friends had land on wires road. so we went up the track a lot. One day we saw A yellow cj5, a tidy 60 series cruiser, and a blue terrano with their families and kids head up the road . It was a nice sunny summers day when they went in and at about lunchtime it started raining. They went into the loop anticlockwise. the cruiser was infront. Down the dip and up the steep hill and came to another narrow trench that doesn't get sunlight and the cruiser was infront and broke the rear diff. The other 2 tried going back the way theyd come and couldnt get back up the last steep hill to the area we call the "picnic table." Its the clearing by the start of the loop and Waipaheke track and walking track to Whangamata. Buggar all food, no gum boots and on a 15* degree uphill slope. Hardly any tools. So its 5 in the evening and still raining. One of the wives and kids decided to walk out because she had had enough of 4 wheeling and wasnt a happy camper. but she did have a $5 torch and their was plenty of water about the place... They turned up at our camp late at night (we were sitting around our camp fire at about 12.30 ) and we fed them and took them down to a bed and breakfast place on the main road. Friends of theirs came down the next day from the Auckland 4wd club in a shiny 4x4 with a diff tools oil and food. We took them in as far as the start of the loop track and told them to start walking with all their gear. Thats a walk they'd never forget and only sand shoes. 2 days later they drove out. We know the yellow cj5 was a member of the Auckland 4wd club.
love the video I cycled over this yesterday and went down Wentworth into whangamata and back again. coming back nearly killed me.

Used to do this track a lot 40 odd years ago in a series 2A Landi, including the loop, was a good trip until someone came in with a machine to "improve" it. Broke through all the corduroy logs over the peat resulting in the very deep holes you saw, only walk it now.
Used to love the loop did wright couple trucks of in there thou 🤣
ABC rock! we would play all day there trying new stuff- Did you find the Auckland Tram remains on the river bank right where you camped?
Didn't camp in there, headed back out and headed down closer to the start of Thompsons for the next day haha so didn't have time to go exploring for old tramways sadly.

Yeah mate, I am based in the South. Just dishing out some North Island stuff of my recent trip there and then its back down to winter haha

I saw you spoke about 4x4Explorer, is there one for North Island?
Unfortunately not to the same level. The best ones I have found for the North Island is WikiLoc and OverlandNavigator
How do we know if the track is open or closed? Any website I can visit or number I can phone to query? Google only shows dated forums saying it is closed due to Kauri dieback?
It may be best to hunt down the nearest 4WD club. They would have a good idea on the status of the track.
Hiya, where exactly is this track? I went to the end of Maratoto Rd and found a few dead-end tracks, few more practice tracks and a river crossing but didn't see the 4WD or Tairua River sign? Am I on the right track? Pun intended ha

Good swimming hole near the top and the bottom. Ya surf is a bit weak dude. Put the lid in front get a rear lolka and a winch
what size tyres do you have on your surf?

Wicked man! Dam awesome we track that I will definitely be back to tackle that rock wall again. Does the Loop get opened at any stage any more?
@@4X4MonthlyNZ no she is shut permanently, but we are trying to get it back open again
What’s the status of the track these days mate, still closed?
@@liamparrkker Yes we are working with doc to have it back open soon. Winter had its toll on the track..

How many max tracks do you carry?
I carry 4, 2 Xtremes and 2 MKII. Mostly for comparison video that is in the making. Personally, for what i do, i would go 4x Xtremes. For most people, MKII would do the job amazingly well.
@@4X4MonthlyNZ cheers I have 2 treds. It's amazing how well they work. Arnt as strong as the max trax though
