  • Climb with me up inside our High Moisture Corn Silo as I grease the unloader, check the belts, and change silo doors. I'll Also be giving a visual of how the unloader works to bring feed from the top of the silo down to the mixer!

Shelled or ear corn? Our unloader worked better in ear corn, but the cows did better with shelled. Thanks, nice video.

We do shelled corn now that we have the combine. We run it out of the trucks and into the New Holland 355 grinder and through a 1/8 inch screen. We went down to an 1/8" screen from a 3/16" screen last year to get a more uniform grind and help with digestibility. Though it does seem to take a little longer per load grinding haha. Thanks Ron glad you enjoyed!

Ooooh... I'm afraid of heights and watching TH-cam is the perfect way to experience it 😅
Thanks for taking us along Wes !!! 🎉

How many silos do you have and any harvestores or concrete stave and do you have a bunker silo

We have 4 concrete stave silos, but we only use the 16ft now for high moisture corn. And we have 5 bunker silos of varying widths. Also, we will put up 10 ft silo bags to get things rolling in haylage and corn silage if certain fields are ready sooner or later than the majority of the fields.

Excellent Question! So, the silo I'm climbing in this video is open and has had feed being pulled from it every day for months. The fermentation process is well over so there are no poisonous gasses being released and they're not able to build up anymore....also the weather being cooler aids in that. With that being said when the silo is being filled YOU DO NOT GO IN. When the silo is full to the top and we cap it BUT before going in we run a blower that pumps fresh air in and any gases that may have started to collect out. When we are ready to open the silo once the fermentation has ended, we again hook up the blower and pump fresh air in for 20 mins before we ever consider going up to open it. Thanks, hope that answers your question.

Education is important. While we were away, a neighbor had a heart issue in our high moisture silo. It was 3 months after the silo was filled and rescue workers refused to go up, fearing silo gas. Another neighbor went up and helped him down the chute. I have since suggested they educate themselves on farm rescues. Gas is produced for 21-22 days after the last load is ensiled. We kept the blower at the silo at least that long.
