Rescuing a juvenile flying-fox stuck in a light well: this is Geordie

- After a happily long drought of rescues, this call last night was for a "microbat" trapped in an atrium.
Usually people wouldn't notice a microbat, so I was sceptical as to what species of bat it was; microbats would easily be able to escape the light well space because their wingspans are so much smaller.
My last pair of vid glasses are dodo dead, so I need to wake up a new pair of glasses; I have a few new pairs but they won't talk to me and won't record on the memory card. That's what nephs are for but until they deign to assist me, I am bereft of hands free videography.
Thanks to the MOP who videoed this for me.
Little Geordie from Gordon St, got himself stuck in an evil light well in a tiny terrace house, and couldn't get out. He's only 16 weeks old, and a little skinny. He wasn't the faintest bit happy about either being trapped for being rescued/captured, but after 24 hours, he's doing so well in care, and has been introduced to the hanging batties and a huge sniff-fest has eventuated.
Because of my family situation at the moment, I am moving all animals along to carers to keep myself free for my parents, which means I can't follow up closely on my rescues.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

Bite-y and fight-y! That’s a healthy batt-y!

What a whippersnapper! He raised up and was going for you after missing your fingers. Hope your family will be ok.
He just wanted to climb up on me to use me as a launching pad.
Equally, I didn't want to be a launching pad
Feisty and opinionated. You can tell he wasn't happy, but he will surrender to the loving care he will receive. ❤❤❤
He wanted to show you all his pointy bits and escape skills, but you were faster ;-)
I like to see how they're moving and I choose to not control them closely because I can read their behaviour and escape in time. It's not that I'm necessarily faster, but more that he telegraphs his move before he moves, so I have time to avoid.
That... plus a lot of experience with batties.
🦇❣️ Yes, his whites of the eyes makes them cutest to catch you off guard. Little did he know who's boss.😅
Love the thumbnail: that bashful & weary glance before a nervous bite. Very dog-like ❤
I went through the video frame by frame and screenshotted this bit because I love it when I can see the whites of their eyes.
Geordie is a cutie; glad he had nothing serious to fuss about. Our all-purpose pro, Meg is keeping her calendar clear in case she needs to fly to the rescue of her own wee colony of hairless pink giants. Best regards to them, Meg, hope they are hanging comfortably at the moment.
My father doesn't have more than a month or 2 to live, and Mum needs a lot of support
@@Megabattie 🙏❤
@@Megabattie May he go peacefully, Meg. You are all very fortunate to be close to one another at this difficult time. ❤ to all your family.
@megabattie ❤️🙏❤
@@Megabattie I'm so sorry to hear that. 🙏💖
Gorgeous little face. Xxx
Wee Geordie went from looking very worried to feisty in a split minute…what a great face on him. Glad there were no injuries and he is not lacking in courage…no doubt he will do well, get fattened up, and try to avoid light wells in future.
I hope things are well with your folks, I have been living without a phone or wifi for a couple of weeks (I think), it was very surreal until we got it all sorted out today. I’m glad to be back and getting my bat fix after mostly house chores and reading books.🥂🖤🇨🇦
Geordie has got very expressive eyes. What a sweetheart ❤❤❤❤
Fiesty little bugger, doesn’t seem to take away any of his cuteness though.
Well, didn’t he get quite bold with his teeth! Best wishes for Geordie to continue back to the wild. Meg, you and your family remain in my prayers. 🙂
Thanks
Fiesty bitey batty...equals a survivor 😊❤xxx
Ha ha! he had a couple of goes at you. "I'm not a good girl, I'm a bad boy!"
How cute. He took your hand at once🦇💖.
Come on Geordie you 're a handsome batty!! Meg in action again,!!!
He looks absolutely terrified, poor baby.
What a bitey little bug! While it's always a pleasure to see your (good) rescues, Meg, your parents come first. The batties will always be there. Much love, respect, and admiration from USA for everything you do.
Awww, feisty and bitey… just how we like ‘em 😂. Good thing you haven’t let your reflexes get rusty! Geordie is _quick_ on the draw!
I hope your parents are doing well, and the universe is allowing you a little rest, Meg ❤.
Handsome gent! Startled me when he had a go at you Meg. Thank goodness your reflexes are so fast.
He didn't startle me; I watch them and they telegraph their intent before they do it so I'm not necessarily faster, I just see it before it happens.
@Megabattie He definitely startled me! Hoping he's doing well and your family is too.
What a precious beautiful baby
At first Geordie looked so scared🥺🦇💕💕 but your soothing voices and compassion surely made him feel so much safer!! Thank You!!🥰
Hooray...hopefully a survivor! Hope your parents are well Meg! 😇❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️
They're not, either of them today. Dad is slowly slipping away and won't be with for more than a couple of months.
@@MegabattieSo very sorry ❤
@Megabattie I'm so sorry Meg. I lost my only parent when I was 30. At 64, I still miss her. If I can do anything for you ( even being in the US), please let me know😇❤️🫂
Im not ready to be fatherless or an orphan. @@PK-oy4fe
MOP did a good job with filming😁
Poor Geordie looked terrified 🥰❤️🦇🇨🇦
MOP left out all the talk and interesting bits...
@@Megabattie aww really?? That’s not so good!
@@anitamackinnon7975 He did what I asked - he videoed the rescue, just not all the talking and interaction
Hiya my friend Meg I know he's in good hands with you. The look he gave just made me melt. Get well Geordie so you can be free again to be with your friends and family again. Hi Meg🤗, TY for all your doings for these precious batties.
😊❤/|\(^• •^)/|\❤🥰
Good to see you saving bates❤
How can anything be so cute 😭
he seems sweet
Such expressive eyes! 👀
Such a beautiful little guy!💋💕
Aw. He's scared. Poor baby. 🥺
What a little sneak, trying to have a go at you without screaming his intentions first! You're not supposed to try and have a go at Meg without announcing it beforehand Geordie; it just isn't done! 😆 Sending well-wishes for you and your family!
He telegraphed his intention with his eyes; that's why I'm fast enough to get away, because I can see when they're about to try to bite.
Very nice of them to video for you.
Aside from a fairly bitey fellow, looks like it went well!
He was just scared. He's doing well now he's been through the monumental meet and greet sniffies in the big cage with all the others.
He is adorable, those eyes!
I went through the entire video looking for a good thumbnail and this was what I could screenshot. I love it when I can see the whites of their eyes.
@@Megabattie Ya I’m with you, so expressive when you can see the white of their eyes. Amazing creatures.
So sweet... so nice ❤🥰🦇
Meg the quickest
Just wanted to say thank you Meg love your videos. I hope all is well. Missed you ❤
Nice young one ❤🇨🇦🦇🍁
That eyeroll!
Good thing you've got quick reflexes!
If it was an adult male I'd probably have kept a little more control over his pointy bits, but with the little ones I don't want to over control them, just avoid being nailed by the pointy bits.
Geordie sweethart ❤️🦇❤️
Miss the baby bats!
Love your videos and your compassion for these wonderful creatures! And, I must admit, I get a kick out of your creativity in the replace caps you use on the single dose tube of glucose!
LOL.
😹😹😹👍💕
The tube has a cone shaped nozzle so no normal caps will stay on it, and I got tired of my pockets being filled with sticky glucose. The screws are good but it has to be stainless steel in order to not go black and rusty. My guy who fixes things and makes things for me supplies me with various things; I really liked one cap screw but he doesn't have any more of them.
What a lovely post!
Ahhhh
mas que neném mais bonitinho.. 🦇🦇🦇 ficou bravinho!
They don't realize that they aren't going to be eaten.
Fantastic channel 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Enrico
@@Megabattie You ' re welcome Dear Megabattie 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Looks like the sugar rush soon kicked in! ❤
If you want to teach a flying fox at math because google said their smart. then follow these steps
step 1: Bring 2 bananas
step 2 set the bananas on a surface
step 3: Ask a wild flying fox who's 6 feet away from you what is 1 banana + 1 banana
step 4: wait for their answer
step 5: say the answer is 6 flying foxes because one banana is too much for one average size flying fox stomach, so three flying foxes per banana.
step 6: run away as fast because you may have disturb their sleep
Such a worried little face! But what's he doing being 16 weeks old in mid-September? Or maybe I should ask what his mum was doing!
You should ask his mum "what were you thinking"?
@@MegabattieShe said the guy was so handsome and had such a wonderful stink and he promised to show her where there were ripe mangos and all the other girls were pregnant and...
Meg those camera glasses are BADASS! 😅 I want some❤ I just found out a friend of mine moved to Australia. Maybe I’ll have her contact you. She’s a really great woman lovely person big animal person too! Originally from Missouri by way of Utah..❤
What is she going to contact me for? Is she in Sydney?
In the beginning, I thought you suffered with arthritis & wore the hand & arm attire to help with pain. Well was I wrong! It’s to protect you from the bites these guys can deliver ❤️🦇❤️🦇❤️
It's to protect me from scratches; the bites I can avoid with good handling, but the scratches are inevitable without some form of protection.
@@Megabattie Thank you for sharing your wonderful story ❤️
Really sorry to hear about your parents Meg. I can easily understand and wish you and them the best. I've fallen down alot of rabbit holes lately so I didnt know. With so many losses here, I have spent alot of time just....existing I guess. I always get a kick when you think it's a girl but then suddenly the little peepee pops out lol. Or you just find it later. This little cutie must not have been too stinky eh? Does that get worse the older they get? Or after they've mated maybe? I have no clue. Hope he does well and you too🙏💔🕊️🦇
My parents are high maintenance at the moment, but they're no trouble, if that makes sense.
The boys don't become stinky until puberty, so you can't smell the difference between male and female if they're under 12 months old, and the juvie boys can hide their penises in their fur because at this stage their bits are tiny, but they do become impressive and start thickening up from about 12-18 months old, when the boy hormone stink starts.
@@Megabattie Yikes! Well I guess you don't have too much trouble picking THEM out lol.
Yes that makes perfect sense. It must be tough with both of them I'll at the same time. My Dad was real sick but between us kids and Mom being so much younger then, we made it for awhile. But his kidneys were gone and he would not let us donate. He was worried about the diabetes getting ours too. We lost him 30yrs ago this past May. I'm his age now. And just got diagnosed with diabetes last year. Mom had colon cancer. We'd been fearing that for some time. She was a God fearing very stubborn woman and had her ideas about medicine etc. She had so many back surgeries I lost count. We didn't know as kids. How bad it really got for her. Sadly part of that is my beloved Dad's fault. Ever watch Archie Bunker? I can't remember the shows name but it's old but was really popular in the day. I feel really bad about not doing enough for my parents. I'll never shake that I think. Even tho I asked God for help too.
I'm glad you still have this time with both of yours Meg. It's precious. Don't let anyone try to mess that up. I know! You're fierce!
Thank you for all the work you do Meg. Please take care🙏🕊️🦇🤎
I have daily time with my parents either by phone or in person; we value our time together.
💖🦇💖
1:47 I can relate.
Could happen to anyone...
A bit of glucose and the feist attacks😂
Meg, can we help get you new video glasses?
Thanks; I have new video glasses, I just haven't figured out to sort the memory card out so it works with the new pairs. I bought 3 new pairs last year so I never ran out of recording glasses, but these ones need the card reformatted I think. I delegated it to someone else, but they're overseas. I'm hoping my nephs come to the party for me and make it work without me having to engage my brain
I wanna ask how do you come up with names? Do you think of them on the drive over? The moment you meet them? After they are home with you?
Some are easy, some are hard, some I let the MOP name (but only if I like their name suggestion or if they're a kid). The street was Gordon St and I've called a bat Gordy and gordon before, so I went with Geordie. If he'd been an adult male I might have used another name. I don't know.
If they're babies, I come up with a bunch of names then pick the one which is suitable for the little one. I have hundreds of names on my list. Sometimes it's tangential, sometimes it's really obvious. I called one baby Jethro from Gibbs St, because of Jethro Gibbs from NCIS. It also depends on whether or not I am keeping them or if they're going immediately to another carer.
Hello there Foxy Batty
What a beautiful little animal it’s tragic that bats have got a bad reputation but …… hey that’s government for you there must be an agenda somewhere XX
Way back in medieval times, (in Europe), bats were associated with the night, and the night was associated with the devil and darkness. That's how they got their reputation.
In China, bats are considered good luck.
First bat of the season?
LOL no. First batty has to be an actual baby needing raising.
He's just a late late baby whose Mum got herself out of phase
@@Megabattie You made an (off colour) electrical joke and probably didn't realise it.
The live conductor in electrical installations is known as the phase conductor.
I hope Mumbat had nothing to do with any
phase conductors.
@@PaulG.x I expect mumbat is live and well and just didn't know how to retrieve her baby, or where he left the flyout.
Sorry about the off-colour joke.
i guess i missed something-
can i know what is going on with your family
My father is dying; both parents are in a very nice nursing home and both in the same room. They're quite needy at the moment; they've been married for almost 70 years.
Pressed dislike by accident! I took it back I promise 😆
Hope your parents are doing well too xx
No worries Sonia; I never look at the likes or dislikes because it's not relevant to anything. My parents are failing but that's inevitable; it's just a matter of being there for them.
How are you finding the channel after 3 months?
@@Megabattie I love this channel. I came here looking for bats because my son was having some freakouts about bats, so I wanted to show him they weren't really scary at all. I think I've been here longer than 3 months but I changed my username. I was blomlika before. Anyway, I'm now obsessed with batty rescues and all your uploads! 😍
How is your son coping now; try the orphan bat playlists, and try the Walter playlist. That should show him how the batties are all individuals and live in a society where they all have to get on.
The babies are the best videos to see because they appear so harmless and they're so gorgeous
@@Megabattie yes, he thinks they are cute now, which is great!
