  • Edge of the Everglades: Big Cypress National Preserve, a half-hour documentary produced by WGCU Public Media, tells the story of the country's first national preserve through interviews with leaders of the movement to protect the Big Cypress, as well as hunters, private camp owners, renowned Everglades photographer Clyde Butcher, and the Preserve's wildlife biologists.
    Historic photographs and vintage film highlight the early efforts to include the Big Cypress in Everglades National Park, the subsequent logging of the Big Cypress, and the grassroots struggle to stop the Everglades Jetport.

    Fantastic documentary. When that man talked about yhr Cypress Cathedral i feel exactly like this. I can completely relate. I live next to Okefenokee, the largest swamp wildlife refuge of Southeastern Georgia, similar in some ways, except instead of crystal clear water its pitch black and mirror like. I totally want to visit big cypress and everglades one day.
    What a history, an incredible story of conservation.

      Sounds like him to me! The narrator is most likely Peter Thomas. He lived close by in Naples too! I kept waiting to hear when they came across a crime scene...lol

    I was just here and hiked a little bit of it (a little over 5 miles) the other day and it was possibly the prettiest hike I've done so far. I have to see as much of it as I can

    Only 100? they were down to 20 at one point, respect has to be shown to those who have helped ensure the everglades stay heathy

    Beautiful big cats and kittens: called either panther, cougar, puma in Florida, and mountain lion in the high country or other areas of Americas. A few are still being hit and killed by cars in Florida.

    I went hiking there recently and came across a jeep club who were about 30 jeeps deep. They were tearing up the place, drinking, littering and shooting off guns. What a disgrace.

    This history triggers me that conscious awareness of the loggers was less than p ant. 500-600 yr+ Cyprus should have and could have been sustainably preserved. SMH forever even to this present day....

    The native American's that lived here for many generations before us were hunters and fishermen. There's a way to do it and a way not to.

      +Mike Younis there is high ground at different places that form islands. The "gladesmen" that live there today have built settlements on them. Also, the Calusa built shell mounds out of discarded food waste like oyster shells and animal bones that eventually became full fledged islands. See: Mound Key.

    • @MoMoMyPup10
      @MoMoMyPup10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The buggies are used mostly for transportation within, and the ATV's are there recreationally, and generally aren't concerned about preservation.
