EVERGLADES RISING: Can we save Florida's embattled wetland ecosystem?

- America's largest and most famous subtropical wetland is full of fascinating creatures. This national treasure, however, is threatened by invasive species, climate change...and humans. Follow filmmaker Richard Kern as he explores this embattled ecosystem. We'll see some of the Everglades' most famous native residents, some rare, some abundant, and slog deep into a few of this ecosystem's most biodiverse and fascinating habitats.
Most indepth and best Everglades documentary ive seen. I think this should be shown to all kids in Florida schools.

Excellent film! I have been learning about the Everglades for many years and still learned a lot... I am sure this will inspire many people to appreciate the Everglades and learn more about the many ecosystems and organisms that call this magical place home!

It is really ruthless, what they did to these beautiful tree snails. But sadly this story encapsules the spirit of the American economic system to this day.

_Wow, This is probably one of the best if not the best documentary on the Everglades. I visit the Everglades for the first time last week and really fall in love with the ecosystem. I really want to become involve and help the everglades to become what it used to be. Thanks for this excellent film._

dude, I managed to learn at least 3 new things watching this, being from South Florida I thought I knew about almost everything with regards to the Everglades but you managed to teach me several new things, thanks for this video my man!
Also, I never thought of this til now but local ecosystems should be taught in school to everybody local to that area at an older age . Weather patterns, endangered/invasive species, soil content, etc. To some degree it already is, and dont get me wrong young kids LOVE this, I surely did and although I definitely learned some things at that time (being brought to wildlife parks and school trips etc) being so young you never truly could grasp HOW important that information is and how to utilize it in your life. They really ought to bring that back into high school as a mandatory curriculum.
I may be a hairdresser in my late 20's but understanding the reason of why we cant build underground in this area is still very useful knowledge to me LOL. Lot of practical knowledge to be learnt and fully understood

thank you for making this! the ten thousands islands are 100 miles across though, i kayaked the whole thing, so I would argue the everglades is as wide, considering that's where it all pours into the sea!

Thank you for this beautiful film! Although,I have to say I don’t fully support people like the lady who came here from Indiana and started a handbag line. I know that sounds like a flippant summarization, but that’s essentially what she did. Just as we have to respect the laws of nature, and not intervene when we don’t like an outcome, we also can’t look at it as “well, they shouldn’t go to waste.”
Well, unfortunately they will have to if we want to move forward. It may not seem like a problem now, but isn’t creating an industry based on a “by product” exactly what we are trying to UNDO? 100 years ago, no one would have believed that turning south Florida into farmland would ruin it. Python handbags? I worked in fashion. You create a global demand for such a product, don’t think wealthy city women around the world will care about the Everglades or how these bags will one day be created. I see python farms, trailer parks and people coming from all over the world to get a piece of that pie.

I agree, and also this is the reason why the wild burmese python is endangered in its native region. Additionally Florida should maybe think of banning importation and breeding of animals and plants that have the potential to invade and desturb the balance of the ecosystem. But the people that are profiting by doing this will say stuff like: It is against free trade, it is communism! Damn leftists! And then all the defenders of unregulated capitalism will hop on board.
As long as politics will put short term economic gain of some over the long term survival and stability of the whole system, it will never end, as you say.
They have let developers destroy the everglades, especially on the south end of Lake Okeechobee and the westside of Miami.
Yup, and they keep trying to move the urban development boundary westward. But the problem started more than 100 years back.

Fun fact. she skirted around it but she said some of it when she said it provided in their time of need. They hod from the army in the glades.. Seminole ain't from Florida. There were natives in Florida but they died from disease and the Spanish killing them or taking slave to islands like Cuba. The Seminole are immigrants to Florida. they came when no other natives were present only Europeans occupied Florida.
Tequesta, Calusa, many other tribes. The Seminole and Miccosukee were descendent from Creek Indians from the north. They found sanctuary in an ecosystem that most other people couldn’t survive in.

Housing in South Florida is extremely expensive partly because lawsuits keep blocking development of places even AFTER they've been zoned for either commercial or residential use. Humans have to live somewhere. No matter where they go, they'll alter the ecosystem whether it's in South Florida or elsewhere. The solution has to be technology. There has to be a way to tackle the saltwater intrusion problem.
if the oceans are rising , why are all the houses and building built along the shore still there ?
the ocean is the same distance up the sea wall that its always been ! for the 55 years I've lived by the sea.
I have friends in the Keys that have measurable evidence to the contrary. Would love to see your documentation.

this happens along the beaches in cycles , sometimes you get more sand sometimes less .
but if you look at the sea walls . the water is at the same " basic " level it has been all my life .
again this fluctuates a little throughout the year .
please , do your own research .
go watch really old movies showing the beaches and houses of Southern California .the docks , the piers .
then look for images and videos of those same places today.
they claim the sea ice is melting , but that ice is already in the ocean , it already displaces as much water as it can even if it melts.
the glaciers on land in Antarctica are growing , going ice .
both Pluto and Neptune just experienced catastrophic global cooling events . look it up .
their global temps plummeted .
the weather is controlled by the sun . the sun is in a minimum . we are headed into a small maybe 2 century ice age .
I am not a scientist . but I am intelligent enough to do my own thinking .
